Cup woe for
ten man Mags
Heaton Stannington
3 Newcastle U21s 0
Newcastle U21s saw their hopes of
retaining the Northumberland Senior Cup end at the semi-final stage on
Tuesday, when they were deservedly eliminated by their Northern Premier League East
hosts.
1,652 fans were at Grounsell Park for a one-sided encounter in which the
Magpies failed to provide any threat at full strength and were fortunate not
to lose by a greater margin after going down to ten men.
United were without a trio of forwards: Sean Neave on first team duty the
previous night, Josh Donaldson out and Ben Parkinson working his way back to
fitness.
With Garang Kuol also omitted from the squad, the visitors seldom enjoyed
any possession in the final third of the field and never recovered from
falling behind.
Stan took a 15th minute lead through Leighton Hopper, before two bookings
for Scott Bailey resulted in a red card for the Magpie midfielder just
before the interval.
Striker Bailey Adamson smashed home a shot to double the lead just after the
hour before substitute Alfie Marriott fired in a late third to confirm
Newcastle's heaviest defeat in this competition since 2004.
Stan will face Morpeth Town in the Senior Cup final at SJP on a date yet
to be confirmed.

Following predictable defeats at Manchester
City and Liverpool, Newcastle's European hopes were revived by victory at
one of their favourite venues on Monday.
A close-range effort by Bruno Guimaraes divided the two sides after an
instantly forgettable encounter when only the three points that lifted Eddie
Howe's side back into sixth position ultimately mattered.
The Magpies have now lost just once in eight visits to the London Stadium,
this success their 150th Premier League away win - and twelfth against the
Hammers.
The hosts almost got off to the perfect start; Tomas Soucek receiving a pass
from Mohammed Kudus in front of goal with 44 seconds on the clock, only to
hoist his shot way over Nick Pope's crossbar.
The goalkeeper was one of three changes from the side eliminated from the FA
Cup by Brighton, getting the nod over Martin Dubravka.
Back came Jacob Murphy and Bruno at the expense of the suspended Anthony
Gordon and Lewis Miley, while 17 year-old striker Sean Neave was named on
the bench for the first time in a Premier League game.
Graham Potter's side had beaten Arsenal and Leicester City in their previous
two league fixtures, but their initial eagerness here soon gave way to a
listless display befitting a mid-table side badly lacking firepower.
Harvey Barnes tested Alphonse Areola with a first-time flick from Kieran
Trippier's centre on 20 minutes and tried his luck with a header soon after,
but it lacked power and the goalkeeper got a hand to it.
That trio of opportunities proved to be the high points of an opening 45
minutes as low-key as the atmosphere.
Nothing much changed after the break as the green and white clad visitors
struggled to create shooting chances and the supply lines into the box were
barren.
That all changed just after the hour though, when Murphy pinged a centre
across the six yard box from the right that Maximilian Kilman diverted
towards his own goal - Areola pulling off a notable stop and Alexander Isak
unable to direct the rebound on the target.
Newcastle were ahead two minutes later; Barnes playing a ball in from the
edge of the box at the second attempt for Bruno to force home from close in
- three years to the day that he got off the mark for the club with that
memorable back-heeled effort at Southampton.
A speedy VAR check disproved claims by home players that Isak had shoved
Kilman in the back as the cross was played, contact made but the defender
toppling over far too easily.
And that really was that: the Hammers ending up with two strikers on the
field who have caused Newcastle harm previously in the shape of Danny Ings
and Evan Ferguson, but precious little in the way of quality deliveries that
allowed them to threaten Pope's goal.
What feels like an important victory was a tough watch at times, with what
looks like the essence of the team to face Liverpool hardly pulling up any
trees, but they look to have avoided any further ailments or incidents.
The manner of the success won't fill Arne Slot's lot with any fear but
hopefully PSG can meddle with his plans on Tuesday night at Anfield in the
Champions League.
This result means that Howe's team will arrive at Wembley on Sunday boasting
a 100% record in London during 2025: PL victories at Spurs and West Ham
book-ending the Carabao Cup success at Arsenal.
Full report to follow.
Team: Pope, Trippier, Livramento, Burn, Schar, Guimaraes (Longstaff
88), Tonali, Joelinton, J.Murphy, Barnes (Willock 79), Isak (Wilson 79).
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Targett, Krafth, Miley, Osula, Neave.
Booked: Burn
While Joelinton avoided the booking that would have prompted an
automatic two game PL ban, Dan Burn's caution moves him two yellow cards of
the same punishment.
Both players now have four PL games to negotiate before those threats
are lifted.
Goal: Guimaraes 63
WHUFC:
Areola, Cresswell (Ferguson 59), Kilman, Todibo (Mavropanos 65), Scarles,
Alvarez (Soler 65), Ward-Prowse (Ings 84), Soucek (Lucas Paqueta 65), Wan-Bissaka,
Kudus, Bowen.
Subs n/u: Fabianski, Guilherme, Emerson, Rodriguez.
Crowd: 62,463
including 3,000 away fans.
England boss Thomas Tuchel was in
attendance while former Magpie and Hammer Marlon Harewood was engaged in
club ambassador duties for the hosts.
Eddie Howe:
"Massive
win, not our best game, but one of our best games.
"It’s a difficult ground to play at, a
difficult team to play against but we dug in, we were disciplined.
We were everything defensively that we haven’t been in recent
weeks.
“We defended our goal magnificently. We’ve had a
challenging week and it was a brilliant response.
"All the big ingredients you need
to be a successful team. Need to win when the game is tight and find
a way to get over the line. We defended really well after the first
three minutes which were a bit scary.
Deserved
win."
On Harvey Barnes:
"I thought Harvey (Barnes)
had his moments and his assist for the goal was a top-quality cross.
He's capable of those decisive moments. So really pleased for him
and Bruno to get the goal.
On the goalkeepers:
"I was pleased with Nick (Pope),
he defended his goal really well. It's a difficult call but it's not
the only one. I have difficult calls in a few positions which shows
we have a good squad. The goalkeeper situation hasn't been clear
because both are high class.
"It's the same in any
position, you look for the best man in the job - you take form,
training and everything into consideration. We do that for every
position. We have tough calls to make.
"Everyone has to be ready because football has a way of
surprising you continually. We need the whole squad focused on
Sunday now and everyone has to be ready to perform."
On what the victory means:
"We
needed the players to empty the tank, to give everything to win this
game and show that we are still competitive and to give ourselves
belief. You only truly get belief from winning. You can prepare as
well as you can but the winning is the final missing piece.
"The most important thing for us is that we defended as a
team and with heart, with structure and organisation. The attitude
was there.
"Even if it is that kind of game against Liverpool, if we
defend in the manner we did today, we know we’ve got the quality
to score. Today was the perfect example.
"One of our best wins of the
season, not in terms of performance but desire and heart.
"We'll focus fully on Liverpool now. We'll take
everything into consideration. I felt we were in need of a win to go
into the final with a real boost and lift.
"(Victory) Will do us the world of good. Also for
our league table position, today was vital."

League home draw with Bournemouth in February 2024.

Stats:
Newcastle sit seven points and four places ahead
of where they were last season after 28 games, 47 points and sixth compared
to 40 points and tenth in 2024.
Bruno Guimaraes scored his 20th goal
for United, all but one of which have come in the PL. He now has three to
his name this season.
Newcastle recorded their seventh PL away win of the season, one more
than they managed in 2023/24.
They have only won more games on the road in a 38 game PL campaign three
times in 27 seasons (nine in 2001/02 and eight in both 2011/12 and 2022/23).
The Magpies remain unbeaten in their white and green change kit after five
outings: 1-1 at Bournemouth, 0-0 at Everton, 1-1 at Crystal Palace, 4-0 at
Ipswich Town and now 1-0 at West Ham.
Newcastle are now unbeaten in their last six visits to the London Stadium and have lost
just one of their eight visits to that venue.

Mitro/Psycho latest
Former Magpie Aleksander
Mitrovic is currently under observation in a Riyadh hospital after
concerns over a rapid heartbeat were raised over the weekend.
Now 30 and playing in Saudi Arabia, the Serbian striker made a scoring
return from a hamstring injury for his current club Al-Hilal on Friday.
News of Mitrovic's hospitalisation follows that of fellow SJP old boy Stuart
Pearce, who was rushed to a facility in Canada last Monday, March 3rd.
The 62 year-old suffered a medical emergency during a flight from Las Vegas
to London Heathrow, the plane diverting to make an emergency landing in
St. Johns.
Pearce remains in hospital but is conscious. No further details of the
medical emergency have been released.

Potters punished
Newcastle U18s 4 Stoke City U18s 1
Having put four goals past Wolves last weekend, the U18s repeated the feat
against Stoke City at a sunny Little Benton on Saturday morning to win their
third successive league game.
In-form striker Kacey Wooster made it five goals in just three
league games, confidently dispatching his 25th minute penalty kick after City's Ben Sheaf nudged Kyle
Fitzgerald in the area.
And it was Fitzgerald who got the second two minutes after the
interval with a shot from the edge of the box.
The Potters pulled one back in the 62nd minute when United failed to clear
their lines and Oghi Enabulele fired beyond goalkeeper Will Anderson.
The young Magpies restored their two goal advantage after 75 minutes when Fitzgerald
beat Ben Chivers at his
near post - his third goal in two starts at this level since signing from
Galway United earlier this year.
United got a slightly fortunate fourth five minutes into added time, substitute
Matthew Taylor seeing his shot strike a defender and loop over the
goalkeeper.
Turkish midfielder Baran Yildiz made his debut at this level as a late
substitute, a month after the 18 year-old completed a permanent switch from
Genclerbirligi.

ST price rise confirmed
NUFC have announced 2025/26
season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their
charges,
a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a
shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources
for supporters.
Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have
all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard
pricing level.
As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per
game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).
There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of
concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to
several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.
A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of
the previous eight month option.
ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to
confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.
Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website from Mon
10.03.2025 @ 10am until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.
(Emails sent out to ST holders who pay in a single instalment reference a
payment date of late April).

Born Or Died:
1930 Tommy Casey born, Comber, Northern Ireland. (1952-58)
Northern Irish international who played at the 1958 World Cup
Finals in Sweden alongside fellow Magpies Dick Keith and Alf McMichael.
Signed from amateur side Bangor on a free transfer by Second Division Leeds
United in 1949, Casey failed to establish himself at Elland Road and dropped
down a league to join Bournemouth.
Coming to the attention of Stan Seymour via ex-Magpie turned scout Bill
McCracken, a £7,000 move followed in August 1952.
Left half Tommy debuted in a 1-2 loss at Burnley a month later and was in and
out of the senior side in the next six seasons.
Winning an FA Cup Winners medal in 1955 when deputising for the injured
Charlie Crowe, his final senior outing came in January 1958 against Birmingham
City (he had turned down the chance to join Cardiff City in 1956).
Despite a lack of first team pitch time though, Casey was in the Northern
Ireland party for the World Cup Finals that summer, playing twice in a forward
role.
Negotiations with Portsmouth continued while Casey was in Sweden and upon his
return, an £8,000 switch to Fratton Park was completed.
With Pompey slipping towards relegation the following March, Tommy made a £6,000
move to second tier side Bristol City - reuniting with former national team
boss Peter Doherty.
Remaining at Ashton Gate until 1963, he later served Gloucester City as
player-manager and had a spell with Inter Roma in the Canadian city of
Toronto.
1965 saw him coaching Swansea, before returning to his native Northern Ireland
to take charge of Distillery.
Back in England in 1972, Tommy took the post of Assistant Manager at Everton
and then a similar role at Coventry City.
A stint as Grimsby Town boss ended in 1976 and he later coached KR Reykjavik
(Iceland) and Harstaad (Norway) before setting up as fishmonger in Portbury,
near Bristol.
Casey also took charge of the Northern Ireland youth side at one stage.
Remaining in the Bristol area, he passed away in January 2009.

1952 John Brownlie born, Caldercruix, Scotland. (1978-82)

Scottish international right back signed from Hibernian in
August 1978, Ralph Callachan going to Easter Road in exchange.
Joining fellow Hibee John Blackley as Bill McGarry sought promotion to the top
flight at the first time of asking, his bow came in a 0-0 draw at Cambridge
United.
Brownlie had won seven full caps between 1971 and 1975 including a 1-0 loss to
England in front of over 119,000 fans at Hampen Park.
However his career was blighted by injury, the most severe of which was a
broken leg sustained while playing for Hibs against East Fife in January 1973
that saw him sidelined for a year.
His absence from the opening half of the 1980/81 season was keenly felt also,
sustaining knee ligament damage in a pre-season kickabout against Hearts at
Tynecastle.
While at SJP he sported a curly perm that later grew out and
was accompanied by a 'tache. He was one of a number of Toon players based in
Morpeth; his bright orange Ford Capri a familiar sight.
Goalscoring was a rarity, John's first coming during a crazy FA Cup tie at
Colchester United, on a night when fellow full back Wes Saunders also broke his duck
in front of goal.
He then galloped upfield to shoot home at the Leazes End in a home game
against Oldham in March 1982, the visitors wearing an awful orange away strip.
Brownlie then repeated the feat in the final home game that season against
Wrexham, with an identical run and finish in what was his last United
appearance.
The following season saw him join Middlesbrough after a contractual bust-up
just before Keegan's arrival, John Craggs returning from Ayresome Park a short
time later as right back cover.
However Brownlie made only a dozen league appearances during his time on
Teesside, going on loan to Finnish side Valaudus.
Spells at Hartlepool United, Berwick Rangers, Blyth Spartans followed before
ending his playing career and taking up a first managerial post at Ashington.
Before becoming assistant boss at Cowdenbeath in 1987, Brownlie later took
charge at Central Park before two periods as assistant at Clyde were separated
by a brief stint managing Meadowbank Thistle.
Coaching youngsters at East Stirlingshire and Raith, he became Arbroath boss
in September 2000 - remaining for three years.
In late 2006 John rejoined East Stirlingshire in a coaching role, briefly
becoming caretaker boss in February 2008.
Living in the village of Whitecross near Linlithgow, he scouted for Hibs
during Terry Butcher's ill-fated stint in charge in 2013/14.
An unexpected call from Berwick Rangers during May 2019 then saw John make a
return to management at the age of 67.
However, he proved unable to prevent the Scottish Second Division basement
side suffering relegation and left Shielfield.
1978 Albert Luque Martos born Terrassa, Spain. (2005-07)
According to Graeme Souness, this waste of a pair of boots was
bought by Shepherd & Son rather than the manager. Souness claimed he was
told Luque would cost £2.5m but the actual deal was reported as £9.5m.
However, he was only marginally worse value for money than the £8m lashed out
by Souness on Jean Alain Boumsong....
Beginning his career in the "B" teams of Barcelona and Real Mallorca,
Luque was capped at U21 level by Spain and loaned out to Malaga in 2000.
Appearing for Spain at the 2000 Olympics in Australia (at football in case of
doubt), he was sold to Deportivo La Coruna two years later and won his first
full senior cap against South Africa at the 2002 World Cup Finals.
Appearing against Newcastle in both legs of the Intertoto Cup tie at the start
of the 2005/06 season, Luque moved to SJP in late August - just before Michael
Owen.
The Spaniard debuted in a home defeat to Manchester United - with an
interpreter present on the touchline - before going off to play two games for
Spain.
He then lasted just 35 minutes of his second appearance (at home to Fulham)
before being stretchered off with a hamstring pull.
That kept him out until late November, after which he made intermittent
appearances in the first team as Souness departed and Glenn Roeder took over
as caretaker boss.
Luque's first goal came from the bench in our famous 4-1 w at the mackems
chipping the 'keeper to complete the scoring.
Ending his first season as a Magpie by netting against Celtic during the Alan
Shearer testimonial, he scored our first goal of the campaign at home to
Lillestrom in the Intertoto Cup the following July.
Despite converting a penalty in a friendly match with PSV @ SJP however, he
faced an uphill struggle for a first team shirt.
That was due to niggling injuries, a lack of pace and ineffectiveness in the
Premier League - in short he just wasn't suited to playing English domestic
football.
This realisation caused Roeder to look elsewhere and after a doomed pursuit of
Dirk Kuyt, Obafemi Martins and Antoine Sibierski appeared, whilst Guiseppe
Rossi came in on loan from Manchester United.
Luque did stage a brief comeback with two long-range strikes against Liverpool
on his reserve debut and then returned to the first team for a UEFA Cup trip
to Palermo.
His third and final competitive goal as a Magpie gave us a 1-0 victory in
Sicily, as he nodded in a James Milner cross and looked almost as stunned as
his team mates - and the 180 away fans present.
After failing to make it off the bench for a League Cup tie at Watford barely
a week later though, the writing was on the wall for Luque - a mooted loan
move to PSV in January 2007 stalling over wage demands.
Making occasional first team appearances, Luque scored twice in a home
pre-season friendly win over Celtic - after which new Magpies boss Sam
Allardyce revealed he'd tried to sign him from Deportivo when in charge of
Bolton Wanderers.
That second honeymoon didn't last though - despite another penalty conversion
at home to Juventus.
After watching from the subs bench as new signing Alan Smith scored against
Sampdoria and Marc Viduka strutted his stuff, Luque was sold to Dutch side
Ajax.
A decent start to life in Amsterdam soon descended into oblivion however, amid
injuries and a dressing room bust-up.
Allowed to leave on loan before the start of the 2008/09 season, Luque
returned "home" to one of his former clubs, Malaga.
That seemed to be to his liking and the deal was made permanent a year later,
when he was granted a free transfer by Ajax.
However, injury disrupted his involvement in the 2009/10 season and Luque's
32nd birthday arrived with just four Primera Liga starts and one goal to his
name.
Continued fitness absences saw Albert released by Malaga in January 2011, at
which point he announced his retirement.
Appearing as a TV pundit in his homeland thereafter, Luque also held a
position as an advisor to the Spanish FA.
December 2022 brought news of his installation as Sporting Director for the
Spanish national team.
Th at
role saw him in court during 2025 as part of the trial of former Spanish
Football Federation supremo Luis Rubiales for sexual assault, namely a kiss
between Rubiales and Jenni Hermoso after full time in the 2023 Women's World
Cup Final.
Accused of coercion related to events that followed that incident, Luque was
acquitted.
1994 Billy Ions born Ashington.
(2010-12)
Striker who left his native
Northumberland as a youngster when emigrating to the Canary Islands with his
family.
Linking up with the Cadets (junior) section of CD Tenerife, Billy's progress
was noted by Newcastle and following a trial, he joined the club in February
2010 - having also had trials at Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion and
the mackems.
Debuting for United's U18s from the bench during a 2-2 home draw with
Nottingham Forest in February 2011, Ions proved unable to hold down a regular
place and made just one start the following season.
Leaving the club in 2012, Billy joined Leeds United and featured for them at
both academy and reserve level but again left without securing a contract.
His next destination was the Nike Academy, before signing for Finnish side
Palloseura Kemi Kings in 2013 after impressing while playing against them in a
friendly match.
Maintaining his fitness during their close season, Ions returned to the North
East and featured for both West Auckland Town and Newcastle Benfield in the
Northern League.
Two seasons at Palloseura saw Billy take the captain's armband and help
achieve back to back promotions before a loan switch to fellow Finns SJK in
2016.
Converting that move to a permanent deal in 2017, Ions remained at SJK until
2020, when he returned to the UK.
Quitting the game due to injury, he later worked as a tattoo artist in North
Shields.

2001 Alan Shearer broke down in

raising fears that his playing career could be over after netting 93
goals for his hometown club.
Thankfully that proved not to be the case, but he didn't return to
action until the following September.
2002 Two goals in three second

Our Champions League hopes weren't quite dead and buried but this
draw left us needing a miraculous set of results in the final round of

United led twice through Shearer as his side enjoyed fantastic support
from an estimated 12,000 fans massed behind the goal they attacked in
the second half.
Unwanted items lobbed onto them included coins, pebbles, spittle, urine
and a flare which thankfully didn't cause serious injury.
Future Mags Martins & Emre played for Inter, while full back

An incredible night at SJP. Exactly
how United managed to escape from this one 4-1 winners remains a
mystery.
With three-quarters of the game
gone Newcastle had stuttered and spluttered and trailed. Four goals in
17 minutes however turned the tie on its head and paved the way for
progress to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
Craig Bellamy levelled before
Alan Shearer headed a second, Laurent Robert hit an outlandish free-kick
and Titus Bramble volleyed in a spectacular fourth as things went from
the sublime to the ridiculous.
Mallorca received eight yellow cards, two of
those for Edu Moya. Future Barca star, Samuel Eto'o looked distinctly
average.

2014 Newcastle's U18s exited
from the FA Youth Cup at the Quarter Final stage, beaten 2-3 at SJP by a
Chelsea side who went on to lift the Trophy.
Chelsea took the lead but Olivier Kemen levelled with a "hand of
god" effort before Adam Armstrong made it 2-1 only for the Blues to
score twice in the second half.

Former
Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid boss
Rafael Benitez Maudes arrived at SJP and was confirmed as the club's new
Manager. Wow.
His own press release read:
"I have the pleasure to confirm I have committed to a legendary
English club, with the massive challenge of remaining part of the
Premier League.
“It will be a challenge not just for me and my staff but for the
players, the club and the fans. All of us must push together in the same
direction and with the same target in mind.
"Personally, it means my return to the Premier League, closer to my
home and my family. I can’t be happier. C’mon Toon Army! The club
and I need your total involvement!”
NUFC also released a statement confirming the departure of Head Coach
and club Director Steve McClaren, having won just seven of 31 league and
cup games played during his reign.

After seven points from three away games, United conjured up a dreadful
home display as Rafa Benitez marked a year in charge at Gallowgate.
His side retained top spot from Brighton on goal difference, but Fulham
completed a league double thanks to a screamer from Tom Cairney and a
brace from 16 year-old starlet Ryan Sessegnon.

Another
unhappy Monday for United, as they gifted the Blues an early goal to
give fleeting relief to boss Mauricio Pochettino and slipped again after
drawing level.
Defeat began an unhappy week that ended with a 0-2 FA Cup
quarter-final exit at Manchester City.
