Update:
Garden party

With Trafalgar Square out of bounds, the scenes that preceded the 2023 Carabao Cup Final were replicated on Saturday night by Newcastle fans in Covent Garden.

Carabao Cup:
Liverpool
(n)

This Sunday sees the Magpies and the Reds clash at Wembley Stadium in the final of the Carabao Cup.

It's a 4.30pm kick-off.

If the score is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of additional time will be played. If that fails to divide the sides, a penalty shootout will then take place.

NUFC fan guide is online
here

A Public Space Protection Order around Wembley means that consuming alcohol anywhere except licensed premises is an offence - in particular on-street drinking (similar regulations cover the Underground).

Pubs in the immediate area are also unable to show the Final live on TV due to licensing restrictions.

Club sponsor Sela are providing scarves for the 32,000 Newcastle fans at Wembley who will find scarves on their seats, unlike the 2023 Final against Manchester United when alternating blocks of black and white flags were laid out and the opposition fans had scarves.

This is the second time that Sela have distributed scarves for away travellers, doing so ahead of the FA Cup visit to the mackems back in January 2024.

Team: Anthony Gordon is suspended and Lewis Hall, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are all injured.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe claimed that other than those players he h
ad a full squad at his disposal.

Coral rate this tie as follows:

To lift the trophy:
NUFC 13/5
LFC 1/4

NUFC to win in 90 minutes 4/1
NUFC to win in extra time 16/1
NUFC to on penalties 12/1

LFC: Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are out injured while Trent Alexander-Arnold is also definitely out after going off during the midweek Champions League meeting with PSG.

Manager Arne Slot returns to the touchline following his two game domestic ban.

Slot's side beat Southampton 3-1 in the Premier League on Saturday to make it six domestic games unbeaten since their FA Cup reverse at Plymouth.

In the Premier League only, Liverpool have now won 21, drawn seven and lost once so far this season.

Tuesday saw them lose to PSG in the last 16 stage of the Champions League, beaten 0-1 at Anfield in the second leg to square the tie.

With no further scoring in 30 minutes of extra time, a penalty shootout followed that Liverpool lost 1-4.

Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones saw their spot kicks saved while Alisson failed to stop any of PSG's.

Referee: John Brooks, the Leicestershire official is given a third Magpies game of the season, following the 1-0 PL home win over Arsenal and 2-0 semi-final first leg success against the Gunners at the Emirates.

Brooks has previously taken charge of a Newcastle versus Liverpool Premier League game; Jurgen Klopp's side winning 2-1 at Gallowgate in August 2023 despite having Virgil van Dijk dismissed.

VAR: Stuart Attwell.

In the capital meanwhile, London Mags haunt The Dolphin near to Kings Cross has undergone a temporary makeover in tribute to a certain NUFC coach....

Call-ups
- Dan in

Friday morning saw England boss Thomas Tuchel name his first squad, including Magpie trio Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Dan Burn - the latter receiving a first-ever international call-up at the age of 32.

While great news for Burn, his selection is bitter-sweet for Eddie Howe, who now has his defensive mainstay exposed to injury risk for an additional two games ahead of the resumption of club fixtures.

Carabao Cup:
Fans unite to attack Wembley price hike

Ahead of Sunday's Final, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) and the Liverpool FC group Spirit of Shankly have penned a joint letter to the EFL regarding Carabao Cup Final ticket pricing.

Read that online here

Cup trio honoured:
Badge winner

Following the recent Anthony Gordon badge issues, new designs from Magpin capture Jacob Murphy, Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak celebrating goals that helped the Magpies to reach Wembley this season.

These are all available separately online here and we had a set of three to give away, asking which Serie A club AC Milan signed Sandro Tonali from.

It was Brescia and the winning entry came from Ian Brown (not that one)....

2025/26:
ST price rise confirmed

NUFC have announced 2025/26 season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their charges, a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources for supporters.

Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard pricing level.

As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).

There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.

A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of the previous eight month option.

ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.

Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.

On This Day in History
15th March

Born Or Died:

1939 Death of Sandy Higgins, 53.
(1905-19)

1983 Daryl Murphy born Waterford, Ireland. (2016-17)

Ireland international striker who moved to United from Championship rivals Ipswich Town in the closing days of the August 2016 transfer window.

The 33 year-old agreed a two year contract at Gallowgate at a claimed cost of £3m and became the club's most senior signing since Sol Campbell in 2010.

Beginning his career as a youngster at Luton Town, Murphy briefly appeared on loan for Harrow Borough before returning home and joining Waterford United.

Joining the mackems in 2005, Daryl spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, returning to score ten goals as the red and whites gained promotion back to the Premier League in 2006/07.

Making a loan move from wearside to Ipswich in February 2010, a permanent transfer to Celtic failed to work out and he returned to Portman Road on another loan deal.

Netting 50 times in 119 Championship starts since returning to Portman Road permanently ahead of the 2013/14 season, Daryl had 23 full Ireland caps to his name when becoming a Magpie in August - including two at Euro 2016 - but was yet to find the net.

That changed within a week though, scoring in a 2-2 draw away to Serbia.

Debuting in the League Cup at home to Wolves, Murphy waited for his chance but then seized it - scoring at Birmingham City in the FA Cup in January.

He then repeated the feat in his next two games - against Brentford and Rotherham - before weighing in with a vital effort in the victory at Huddersfield Town.

Moving on with 12 months of his contract remaining as United returned to the top flight, Daryl received offers from various clubs before signed a three year deal with Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Almost inevitably, Forest were paired with Newcastle in the League Cup the following season
; the striker receiving a good reception when appearing off the bench in his side's 3-2 victory at SJP.

Fast forward 12 months and the two clubs met again
in the same competition, Murphy again on the winning side and this time net
ting in the opening two minutes.

Moving to Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer in September 2019, he rejoined former club Waterford the following August - playing a handful of goalless games before retiring the following summer.

1992 Yven Rochild Victor Moyo born, Orleans, France. (2010-13)

A low-key arrival in September 2010, midfielder Yven signed on a four year deal for an undisclosed fee from Sochaux - although never playing for their first team.

Moyo was first sighted on the substitutes' bench for Newcastle Reserves against Wolves, debuting three months later away to Manchester United Reserves.

However, that first appearance lasted just 45 minutes, the left-sided midfielder failing to reappear after the break with what was later confirmed as an ankle injury.

Allowed to return to his native France while he recovered, he made a competitive return later that season, scoring his first reserve goal against Norwich City
in September 2011.

Yven was released by United in April 2013, having trials at French side Bastia and Sporting Gijon in Spain.

Winning a contract at French third tier side Amiens SC, he went on to play for KF Laci (Albania), US Concarneau (France), Laval (France), FK Palanga (Lithuania), US Saint-Malo (France), Saint Genevieve (France), Amilly (France) and RE Durbury (Belgium).

Representing France at U18 level, Moyo collected a full cap while at Gallowgate in 2011, representing Congo* against Sao Tome & Principe in a World Cup qualifier.

* Congo as opposed to DR Congo, for whom Lomana LuaLua and Chancel Mbemba both appeared while with Newcastle.

United gave a debut for Edward Cooper at outside right, just days after completing a transfer from Glossop North End.

He was one of nine changes to the side that had drawn again with the mackems in the FA Cup three days earlier and faced their rivals in a third meeting 48 hours later.

Rovers collected both points despite having provided no less than four players for the England versus Wales international staged at Bristol City's Ashton Gate the same day.

A Neil Harris header put Newcastle ahead and they believed that Stan Seymour had doubled their advantage when his shot bounced down from the crossbar and crossed the line. Sadly though the match officials begged to differ.

The visiting defence was marshalled by Scotswood-born Fred Reed and he got upfield late on, firing home powerfully to claim a point.

Newcastle's run of three victories was ended by a Wednesday side who returned to the top of Division One, thanks in part to the threat of future Magpie forward Jack Allen.

Despite heavy snowfalls in the Sheffield area this match went ahead, with the touchlines at Hillsborough marked out in blue.

Beaten 1-3 in the first league meeting at Fratton Park and returning there to triumph 4-2 in the FA Cup, United were denied another success after a pair of late slip-ups.

Leading 3-2, Newcastle's Jackie Milburn saw his 87th minute penalty saved after future Magpie Jimmy Scoular handled in the box.

That miss proved costly when Pompey stole a point following a last-minute corner.

This thriller between two sides on the edge of the relegation zone gave United a first home win of 1958.

Having netted twice from close range earlier in the game, Len White memorably rounded off his hat-trick six minutes from time by running from halfway, dribbling round three defenders and hammering home.

1958 Meanwhile at Old Trafford, Newcastle Reserves also triumphed in another goalfest, defeating hosts Manchester United 7-4 in a Central League fixture.

Bill Curry led the way with four goals after his demotion from the first team, Jimmy Hill hit a brace and Reg Davies also netted for the Magpies.

1969 A waterlogged pitch at Goodison Park saw Newcastle's Division One fixture against Everton postponed at Noon the previous day.

It was resarranged almost a month later, on April 14th.

A memorable debut for Aiden McCaffery, at centre half, as Bobby Robson's Town side recovered from a 2-3 interval deficit to lead 5-3 by the 64th minute.

Supermac's second of the game six minutes from full time then reduced the arrears, but United just couldn't find a leveller.

Newcastle's winless run was stretched to seven games - during which their only goal came from a penalty kick.

This match is recalled for an infamous petrol bomb incident, which as legend has it, landed at the feet of Tony Cottee and John Cornwell in the North East corner of the Leazes end where the Hammers fans were housed (sign-fixer Brian Short reportedly received treatment for burns to his legs).

Benches were subsequently installed in front of the former East Stand standing paddocks, where the projectile had been thrown from.

The thrower (an 18 year-old) was caught and received a three year custodial sentence. Andrew Smith from Buddle Street, Scotswood reportedly said on arrest:

"I thought what Manchester could do with darts, Newcastle could do with petrol bombs, I wanted them in the news for a change."

After the conviction, Smith's mother Sally claimed others had put him up to it "just for a laugh" and explained, "Andy wasn't as intelligent as they were; he just wouldn't have thought of it."

Goalkeeper Dave McKellar made his United debut against the club that gave him his first chance, some thirteen years earlier.

Trevor Putney was dismissed for Town at 1-1 while Billy Whitehurst scored his first goal in a Newcastle shirt, turning home Tony Cunningham's centre.

Paul Gascoigne then rounded off his side's fourth successive league win, taking a pass from Paul Stephenson and whacking the ball beyond goalkeeper Paul Cooper.

"Newcastle are not dead yet. Believe me, we feel we can still get out of trouble" said a defiant Jim Smith afterwards. He was wrong.

Tino Asprilla inspired United to victory over the Sky Blues without actually scoring.

His back heel set up Steve Watson, a cross gave Rob Lee the second and the Colombian hit a post from a free kick given for a foul on him, which saw Brian Borrows dismissed.

Tino then tumbled for a penalty Peter Beardsley converted, before leaving on a stretcher saluting the crowd.

Once at the dugout, he then hopped off - miraculously recovered from his ankle injury. "He's different from anything I've ever seen before" said Kenny Dalgish. You and us both.

1998 United Directors Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall featured on the front page of the "News of the World" in what hacks branded the "Toongate" scandal.

Allegations included; calling Newcastle women "dogs", lambasting fans for buying over-priced replica shirts; calling Shearer Mary Poppins and claiming Andy Cole was crocked when sold. Oh, and making drunken boasts about the number of prostitutes they'd paid for.

2000 United's Reserves drew 2-2 at Bedlington Terriers in the semi-final of the Northumberland Senior Cup.

Goals from Garry Brady and Diego Gavilan took the tie to extra-time but a replay was required to settle things.

After one of the toughest trips in Europe (Inter Milan in the San Siro), United returned to winning ways at the Valley.

Alan Shearer went clear third in the list of United scorers with his 144th goal - joining Peter Beardsley on 108 league goals.

The penalty that he smashed in to open the scoring was our 600th Premiership goal - fitting on Al's 200th league appearance.

2006 Hopes of a third-ever FA Youth Cup final success hung in the balance after Manchester City recorded a 3-2 victory at SJP in the Semi-Final first leg.

Trailing 0-1, Jonny Godsmark marked his first start at this level by equalising on 43 minutes - and did it again on 49 minutes.

However the visitors soon levelled and went on to claim victory.

Defeat in the Netherlands ended our dreams of a UEFA Cup final appearance at Glasgow's Hampden Park and marked the point at which Glenn Roeder's grip on power began to slip.

Losing on away goals was especially galling after having led the first leg 3-0 before gifting Louis Van Gaal's AZ side two goals that almost became three as we imploded.

Apparently looking to keep the home side at bay for the whole game, an early defensive blunder from rookie Paul Huntington had us on the back foot before an inevitable second.

And even then United still left their fans in limbo as they mounted a half-hearted late attempt to grab the goal that would have taken them through - Roeder giving N'Zogbia just four minutes as substitute.

A fifth successive loss at Craven Cottage was no shock for a side who looked desperately short of ideas and badly missed a high-profile absentee.

However, it wasn't banned boss Alan Pardew whose absence was bemoaned by the away fans, but rather injury victim Loic Remy.

Thoughts of mid-table mediocrity looked wildly optimistic as the relegation-haunted Toffees strolled to victory.

Fabricio Coloccini's stupid red card capped a gutless showing that did nothing to suggest interim boss John Carver was in control but with nine games to go, 35 points looked more than enough to allay any relegation fears....
