Carabao Cup:
It's Wor Cup!

Liverpool  1  Newcastle  2

Match action is online here

The headline we've waited a lifetime to write on this website finally became fitting on Sunday, as the Magpies ended their 70 year wait for domestic silverware.

A jubilant Toon support inside Wembley and across the planet saw Eddie Howe's side take the game to the reigning Carabao Cup holders from the off and gain their reward in the closing seconds of the first half.

Lining up two more trips to Wembley next week following his England call-up, Dan Burn rose highest to head in Kieran Trippier's corner and put his side ahead amid total mayhem at one end of the national stadium.

A first victory over the Reds in 18 attempts going back to 2015 then moved a step closer five minutes after the restart, when Jacob Murphy and Tino Livramento combined for Alexander Isak to fire home - the striker seeing an effort ruled out for offside moments before.

It wouldn't be Newcastle without some added peril and after failing to net a third goal despite several chances, Arne Slot's side pulled a goal back during added time following a prolonged and agonising VAR offside check.

That's as a good as it got for a Liverpool side as jaded as their support though and following some playing into corners that the watching Alan Shearer would have approved of, the final whistle sounded to send several generations of Mag watchers into uncharted territory.

For Bob Moncur, the unwanted distinction of being the last captain to lift a trophy in 1969 is now banished; Robert Lee's label as our last Wembley scorer is deposited in the dustbin of Toon history - and birthday boy Alan Gowling is no longer our last final net finder.

To the list of successful Wembley captains reads Jimmy Nelson, Joe Harvey and Jimmy Scoular must now be added a trio of names in the shape of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles - our current armband wearer sportingly calling forward two of his predecessors for the all-important trophy lift.

Victory confirms European qualification for the Magpies next season, although they'll hope to improve on the Europa Conference League playoff this success brought them in the remaining ten Premier League fixtures.

And for Howe, it's a personal vindication after he vowed to learn the lessons of 2023's meek loss to Manchester United at the same venue.

His desire to retain Trippier was also repaid by an epic display from the full back, who visibly struggled at times with injury but showed the level of competitiveness that made him such an integral part of our renaissance when persuaded to swap Madrid for Tyneside in 2022.

Much, much more to follow....but until then, join us in raising a glass to the 2025 League Cup winners Newcastle United. Not with that Carabao muck though.

Enjoy the game? too f*cking right we did....

"It had a different feel. We have won the game and everything will be reviewed positively but we prepared well and I was very confident the players would perform."

Update:

With Trafalgar Square out of bounds, the scenes that preceded the 2023 Carabao Cup Final were replicated on Saturday night by Newcastle fans in Covent Garden.

Update:
Mags on the move

Club sponsor Sela commandeered Millbank Tower in central London on Thursday evening to beam out a series of NUFC projections including these two.

Closer to home, Wor Flags gave their new banner an airing on the Millennium Bridge earlier this week.

Another early start for Wor Flags, raising the colours on a local landmark before setting off for Wembley.

In the capital meanwhile, London Mags haunt The Dolphin near to Kings Cross has undergone a temporary makeover in tribute to a certain NUFC coach....

U18s:
Forest felled

Nottm Forest U18s  0  Newcastle U18s  1

Saturday saw Newcastle U18s secure their fourth successive league win, Kyle Fitzgerald continuing his goal-laden start to life on Tyneside.

The 18 year-old former Galway United winger made it four goals from three starts at this level, shooting across Forest goalkeeper Alastair Graham in the 20th minute.

That's how it stayed, with another three points raising the Magpies up to a seasonal high position of fifth.

Carabao Cup:
Fans unite to attack Wembley price hike

Ahead of Sunday's Final, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) and the Liverpool FC group Spirit of Shankly have penned a joint letter to the EFL regarding Carabao Cup Final ticket pricing.

Read that online here

2025/26:
ST price rise confirmed

NUFC have announced 2025/26 season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their charges, a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources for supporters.

Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard pricing level.

As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).

There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.

A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of the previous eight month option.

ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.

Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.

On This Day in History
16th March

Born Or Died:

1922 Bobby Corbett born, Throckley.
(1943-51)

Left back in the 1951 FA Cup winning side, Bobby joined United for £25 from Throckley Juniors and appeared in wartime football.

Never a guaranteed starter, he failed to break into the first XI at all between October 1947 and February 1950, announcing his return soon after with his only senior goal - a penalty in a home win over Derby.

The 1950/51 season found Bobby overlooked in favour of Alf McMichael, but when the Belfast-born player broke a wrist in training, Bobby took his chance - keeping the number 3 shirt and appearing in every game of the FA Cup campaign after the Fourth Round.

Making just four appearances in the following season, Corbett switched to Middlesbrough in search of regular football and later moved on to Northampton Town for a season before retiring in 1958.

Living in North Walbottle, Bobby passed away on 30th September 1988.

1943 William Sykes Wilson born, Peebles, Scotland.(1960-62)

Midfielder acquired from Scottish junior football club Walkerburn in March 1960 who featured for Newcastle's N's Academy side before stepping up into the reserves.

Billy's sole first team outing came at the age of 18, deputising for Duncan Neale in a 0-2 home League Cup defeat to Sheffield United in October 1961.

Released by the Magpies in May 1962

He later ran a successful telecoms business in the Scottish borders.

1949 Alan Gowling born, Stockport.
(1975-78)

Striker signed by newly-appointed United boss Gordon Lee who made his competitive debut for the Magpies in a 3-0 victory at Ipswich in August 1975.

An Economics graduate from Manchester University, Alan began his career at Old Trafford and made his senior debut in 1969 while still studying - having signed on a part -time basis.

A switch from his original striking role to a midfield berth affected his form and a £65K move to Huddersfield Town was concluded in June 1972.

Three years later though, relegation for the Terriers prompted the sale of Gowling to Newcastle for £70K.

Although netting in a pre-season Anglo Scottish Cup game against Middlesbrough at SJP, His first competitive goal didn't arrive until his seventh start for the Magpies.

Alan then hit form in style, scoring four times in a 6-0 League Cup tie against Southport and grabbing a hat-trick in the next home game - a 5-1 demolition of Wolves.

The most high-profile goal of his Magpies career came in the same competition the following February; his shot against Manchester City levelling the final at 1-1.

Having arrived to partner Malcolm Macdonald, Gowling ended up replacing him as Mac was sold to Arsenal by the hated Lee.

Remaining at SJP during the "player power" episode that saw Richard Dinnis installed as manager, Alan then exited during the ill-fated 1977/78 season.

Ian Greaves - Gowling's former boss at Huddersfield - broke Bolton's transfer record, paying £120K in March 1978.

Playing his final games for the Trotters in defence, Alan moved on to Preston in 1982 but injury curtailed his career.

First becoming involved with the PFA in 1974 (and later completing an MA with a thesis on the workings of the player's union), Gowling became Chairman in 1980.

Pursuing a career away from football, Alan was General Manager of a Buxton-based chemicals company. He also worked as a local radio summariser in Lancashire and was a Manchester Evening News columnist.

1949 Death of Billy Hibbert, 64.
(1911-20)

1996 Ivan Toney born, Northampton.
(2015-18)

August 2015 saw United sign this 19 year-old striker from Northampton Town, where he'd been a first teamer since 2012.

The Cobblers connection was United's recruitment guru Graham Carr, who had previously played and managed the club and maintained close links with them.

Within weeks of his claimed £300K switch, Ivan debuted against his former side from the bench in a League Cup tie at SJP.

Adding substitute appearances in the next round against Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea in the Premier League, Toney then spent the remainder of the season out on loan at League One side Barnsley.

Incredibly, he managed two winning appearances at Wembley for the Tykes, a Football League Trophy success over Oxford United followed by a promotion playoff victory against Millwall.

The 2016/17 campaign brought further loan moves for Ivan; spells at League One side Shrewsbury Town and Scunthorpe United.

And it was a similar story the following season, loaned out to Wigan Athletic before returning to Scunthorpe United.

Toney's last games as a Magpie came for the U23s in pre-season before League One Peterborough United paid an undisclosed "six figure fee" in August 2018.

His scoring form attracted scouts from Championship and Premier League clubs to London Road and he moved to Brentford in August 2020 for a fee of around £5m with add-ons potentially doubling that.

A League Cup pairing with Newcastle that December saw him come off the bench shortly after the Bees scored the only goal of the game.

Promotion for the Bees saw Toney face his former employers in the Premier League; inevitably on target in a 3-3 draw at SJP during November 2021 - and again in a 1-5 loss at Gallowgate the following year.

September 2022 saw a senior England call-up for Ivan but he failed to get off the bench for his first cap and was omitted from the Qatar World Cup squad.

And as that tournament began, it was revealed he was the subject of an FA investigation into multiple betting regulation breaches.

That landed him with an eight month ban, returning in mid-January 2024 amid talk of a big-money switch to Arsenal.

In the end he made a move to Saudi Arabia and Al-Ahli in August 2024.

After a 1-1 draw at Leeds Road the previous Saturday, another 90 minutes failed to separate the sides.

Bobby Mitchell then looped home a shot at the Leazes End in the first period of extra time, before a close range finish from Vic Keeble in front of the Gallowgate confirmed United's progress to the semi-final stage.

Newcastle wore white shirts and black shorts in this tie, footage of which is online here

1966 SJP played host to a friendly meeting between English and Scottish League representative sides.

Almost 33,000 fans saw the Scots win 3-1, despite England leading at half time through Jimmy Greaves.

Dundee's Andy Penman equalised within seconds of the restart, before a brace from Celtic's Joe McBride made it a day to forget for England's Northumbrian-born duo of Jack and Bobby Charlton.

Also in the line-up that day was ex-Magpie George Eastham - by then with Arsenal.

1992 Barely 48 hours after he'd left Tyneside during a 3-1 victory over Swindon Town, Magpies boss Kevin Keegan played 90 minutes for the club's reserve side.

The occasion was a friendly at West Auckland Town to christen new floodlights at Darlington Road.

David Robinson, Keegan, Archie Gourlay and Andy Hunt (2) gave the Magpies a 5-0 victory.

Responding to one fan calling out "welcome back Kev", KK said "I haven't been away long, have I?"

An analysis of the previous 15 games for the bottom six of the Premiership made disturbing reading. Even doomed Palace had scored more goals than us. Good job we got off to a good start that season:

2001 Interviewed for The Mag, Newcastle's then Chief Executive, David Stonehouse, was asked about NUFC -related websites. His reply?

"We are having a load of problems with the club’s official website and if I ever want to find out what’s happening I go straight onto NUFC.com"

Up stepped the number 9, to drag a dreadful spot kick wide of Matteo Sereni's goal at the Gallowgate End with the very last kick of the game. We remained in fourth position.

Newcastle celebrated their 100th game in Europe by devouring the cream of Greek football, 7-1 on aggregate, to reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

And there was certainly nothing ambrosial about the Olympiakos display as they were pounded from the first whistle to the last by an exuberant United, determined to finish the job started in Athens the previous week.

Kieron Dyer revelled in his forward role, supporting two-goal Alan Shearer and was behind much of the first half dominance.

2008 Newcastle completed the signing of free agent defender Lamine Diatta following extended talks with the 32 year-old after passing his medical.

Diatta told French media sources he had agreed to join United initially until the end of the season, with a possible contract extension available at that point.

However he would exit SJP after two substitute outings amounting to just nine minutes.

2009 Mark Doninger netted his sixth goal in four reserve games during a 2-1 win over Everton at Whitley Park.

He levelled the scores before Nile Ranger's late winner for Richard Money's side.

Without a win in nine league and cup games, a youthful U21 lineup were swept aside in the opening 45 minutes at the Amex Stadium by a Brighton side who were similarly winless.

And although Newcastle saved face slightly with an improved second half showing, the 0-3 half time scoreline remained unaltered.

United's FA Cup campaign came to an end at the Etihad Stadium, as a pair of unfortunate deflections decided the quarter-final tie.

Two first half Bernado Silva shots wickedly ricocheted off Dan Burn and Sven Botman, while Alexander Isak failed to convert two chances that could have given his side a foothold in the contest.
