Carabao Cup:
Date set for celebration

Newcastle United confirm that they will stage an event marking their Carabao Cup success on Saturday March 29th - further details are yet to be announced.

That follows the international break and comes during weekend when FA Cup quarter-finals take place. The Magpies return to action the following Wednesday - April 2nd - when Brentford visit SJP in the Premier League.

Although Eddie Howe and some players flew back to Tyneside with the silverware on Monday, celebrations had to be deferred due to players heading away for international duty.

The manager and the rest of the squad will head to Dubai in the coming days for warm weather training.

Carabao Cup:
It's Wor Cup!

Liverpool  1  Newcastle  2

Match action is online here

The headline we've waited a lifetime to write on this website finally became fitting on Sunday, as the Magpies ended their 70 year wait for domestic silverware.

A jubilant Toon support inside Wembley and across the planet saw Eddie Howe's side take the game to the reigning Carabao Cup holders from the off and gain their reward in the closing seconds of the first half.

Lining up two more trips to Wembley next week following his England call-up, Dan Burn rose highest to head in Kieran Trippier's corner and put his side ahead amid total mayhem at one end of the national stadium.

A first victory over the Reds in 18 attempts going back to 2015 then moved a step closer five minutes after the restart, when Jacob Murphy and Tino Livramento combined for Alexander Isak to fire home - the striker seeing an effort ruled out for offside moments before.

It wouldn't be Newcastle without some added peril and after failing to net a third goal despite several chances, Arne Slot's side pulled a goal back during added time following a prolonged and agonising VAR offside check.

That's as a good as it got for a Liverpool side as jaded as their support though and following some playing into corners that the watching Alan Shearer would have approved of, the final whistle sounded to send several generations of Mag watchers into uncharted territory.

For Bob Moncur, the unwanted distinction of being the last captain to lift a trophy in 1969 is now banished; Robert Lee's label as our last Wembley scorer is deposited in the dustbin of Toon history - and birthday boy Alan Gowling is no longer our last final net finder.

To the list of successful Wembley captains that reads Frank Hudspeth, Jimmy Nelson, Joe Harvey and Jimmy Scoular, must now be added a trio of names in the shape of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles - our current armband wearer sportingly calling forward two of his predecessors for the all-important trophy lift.

Victory confirms European qualification for the Magpies next season, although they'll hope to improve on the Europa Conference League playoff (dates below) this success brought them in the remaining ten Premier League fixtures.

And for Howe, it's a personal vindication after he vowed to learn the lessons of 2023's meek loss to Manchester United at the same venue.

His desire to retain Trippier was also repaid by an epic display from the full back, who visibly struggled at times with injury but showed the level of competitiveness that made him such an integral part of our renaissance when persuaded to swap Madrid for Tyneside in 2022.

The whole squad deserves praise for an outstanding team performance but special mentions for Burn, obviously, Livramento who kept Mo Salah shackled, Sandro Tonali and the colossus otherwise known as Joelinton.

But everyone, including the non-playing substitutes and backroom staff played their part and deservedly took to the field after the final whistle to take the richly deserved plaudits.

This club has no rival when it is United and this was a day when it all came together.

Much, much more to follow....but until then, join us in raising a glass to the 2025 League Cup winners Newcastle United. Not with that Carabao muck though.

Enjoy the game? too f****ing right we did....

Crowd:
88,513 including an original NUFC allocation consisting of 31,939 tickets. Even before the game the Reds looked a beaten side, their pathetic surfer flag was hastily withdrawn down an exit while the Wor Flags list of honours banner was proudly displayed.

Eddie Howe:

"Emotional, very emotional. It is very unlike me. We knew what was at stake and just wanted to do everyone proud.

"We were desperate to try and win the trophy after so many years of hurt.

"It had a different feel. We have won the game and everything will be reviewed positively but we prepared well and I was very confident the players would perform."

Referee: John Brooks. A third Newcastle game of the season for the Leicestershire official, following the 1-0 PL home win over Arsenal and 2-0 semi-final first leg success against the Gunners at the Emirates.

Brooks has previously taken charge of a Newcastle versus Liverpool Premier League game; Jurgen Klopp's side winning 2-1 at Gallowgate in August 2023 despite having Virgil van Dijk dismissed.

VAR: Stuart Attwell.

Stats:

Victory saw United land a place in the two-legged Europa Conference play-off round. That is scheduled to be played on Thursdays August 21st and 28th.

New stocks of the ever-popular Ferdinand reversible bucket hat have now reached Football Bobbles and are available to purchase here now.

We had one up for grabs and asked you to predict the final score in Sunday's Carabao Cup Final.

There were multiple correct entries meaning that a random draw was required to decide the hat winner - and that produced the name of Anthony Owens.

Update:

With Trafalgar Square out of bounds, the scenes that preceded the 2023 Carabao Cup Final were replicated on Saturday night by Newcastle fans in Covent Garden.

Update:
Mags on the move

Club sponsor Sela commandeered Millbank Tower in central London on Thursday evening to beam out a series of NUFC projections including these two.

Closer to home, Wor Flags gave their new banner an airing on the Millennium Bridge earlier this week.

Another early start for Wor Flags, raising the colours on a local landmark before setting off for Wembley.

In the capital meanwhile, London Mags haunt The Dolphin near to Kings Cross has undergone a temporary makeover in tribute to a certain NUFC coach....

U18s:
Forest felled

Nottm Forest U18s  0  Newcastle U18s  1

Saturday saw Newcastle U18s secure their fourth successive league win, Kyle Fitzgerald continuing his goal-laden start to life on Tyneside.

The 18 year-old former Galway United winger made it four goals from three starts at this level, shooting across Forest goalkeeper Alastair Graham in the 20th minute.

That's how it stayed, with another three points raising the Magpies up to a seasonal high position of fifth.

Team: Anderson, Bloomer (Epia 89), Johnson, Craggs, Cogdon, Harper (O'Donovan 71), Taylor (Durrant 89), Munda (Alabi 66), Fitzgerald, Wooster, Ferreira.

Carabao Cup:
Fans unite to attack Wembley price hike

Ahead of Sunday's Final, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) and the Liverpool FC group Spirit of Shankly have penned a joint letter to the EFL regarding Carabao Cup Final ticket pricing.

Read that online here

2025/26:
ST price rise confirmed

NUFC have announced 2025/26 season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their charges, a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources for supporters.

Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard pricing level.

As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).

There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.

A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of the previous eight month option.

ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.

Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.

On This Day in History
17th March

Born Or Died:

1906 John McCurley born, Kelty, Scotland. (1927-30)

Newcastle's efforts to strengthen their side in the first half of the 1927/28 season took them to Glasgow and Third Lanark's inside left "Jock" McCurley.

The 21 year old was also coveted by Chelsea, Huddersfield Town, Manchester United, Boro, Notts County and The Wednesday (later Sheffield Wednesday).

However the Magpies got their man for £2,500 after seeing him score twice against Arbroath in December 1927.

"Jock" made his bow in a 1-4 FA Cup loss at Blackburn Rovers soon after, marking his home debut a month later with a goal during a 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers - playing several reserve games during the intervening period.

Making the bulk of his first team appearances in the 1928/29 campaign, McCurley played less the following season as United declined from 10th to 19th and avoided relegation by a single point.

Returning to Scotland with East Fife, Jock subsequently played for Cowdenbeath.

He was living in the Morpeth area at the time of his death in 1969.

1948 Death of Jack Carr, 71.
(1897-1912)

1960 Pat Heard born, Hull. (1984-85)

Midfielder who began his career as an apprentice at Everton, appearing for their first team briefly before signing for Aston Villa at the age of 19.

A former England youth international, Pat's medal-winning but non-playing subs role for Villa in the 1982 European Cup Final victory over Bayern Munich is a football quiz staple.

Joining Sheffield Wednesday in January 1983, he followed Manager Jack Charlton to SJP the following season in a part-exchange deal that saw John Ryan and £50K go to the Owls.

Pat debuted at home in a 1-1 draw against West Ham in September 1984 netting against Ipswich Town at Gallowgate a week later.

Described by Charlton as "not a spectacular player, but one who will definitely strengthen our team," Heard was never a fan favourite and few tears were shed when he followed Jackie out of the exit door during August 1985, joining the Smoggies.

Later moves took him on to hometown club Hull City, Rotherham United, Cardiff City and finally back to The Tigers before retiring in 1993 after a stint out in Brunei.

Heard later worked as an FA Coach, publican and also appeared under the name of "Patrick Stewart, stage hypnotist & illusionist" - a somewhat kinder re-branding than "fat turd", as some Newcastle fans referred to him.

More recently he appeared as a local radio and TV pundit in the West Midlands and reportedly qualified as a driving instructor.

1988 Fraser Forster born, Hexham.
(2004-12)

Goalkeeper who was still a schoolboy when he came off the bench to replace Adam Bartlett for our U18s in December 2004.

A reserve debut followed in February 2006 and Fraser was on the bench in the UEFA Cup at Eintracht Frankfurt later that year.

Featuring in the matchday squad for several Premier League games without being called into action, he appeared in pre-season against both Hartlepool and Real Mallorca ahead of the 2008/09 season.

A loan move to Stockport County in October 2008 then saw him make his competitive debut, in a 0-1 reverse at Bury in the Football League Trophy.

Beginning the following season on loan at Bristol Rovers, Fraser then switched over to Norwich City and quickly established himself as their first-choice custodian.

With the security of a new contract at SJP he stayed with the Canaries until the end of the season, playing a significant part in their promotion from League One.

Behind both Steve Harper and Tim Krul in the pecking order for the 2010/11 season, it had inevitable that Fraser would return to Carrow Road on loan.

However Celtic outbid them and he kept a clean sheet on his debut in August 2010, in a 1-0 success at Motherwell.

Despite a red card in an Old Firm game at Ibrox, Fraser became a popular and pivotal figure for Neil Lennon's side, ending the season with a Scottish FA Cup winner's medal against Motherwell.

Returning to Tyneside, Fraser appeared for United in pre-season games at Darlington and Orlando (on the club's USA tour).

However it was a game at Elland Road that shaped Forster's future, his first touch of the ball seeing him mishandle a free kick and give Leeds their opening goal in a 3-2 friendly victory.

The following weekend saw him replace Tim Krul at half time in a home friendly against Fiorentina, but that was called off on 63 minutes due to the heavy rain that made conditions farcical.

Within a fortnight Forster was back at Celtic on loan, making his second Hoops debut in a Europa League tie with FC Sion.

Under contract at SJP until 2014, a £2.5m transfer to Parkhead came in July 2012, by which time he owned an SPL winner's medal.

October 2012 then saw Fraser receive a first international call-up, joining Roy Hodgson's senior England squad and sitting on the bench for World up Qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.

A first international cap came in a friendly against Chile in November 2013 and in February 2014 he beat several clean sheet records, by not conceding for 13 games playing for Celtic.

That shutout sequence finally ended when Aberdeen's Jonny Hayes beat Forster, ending an amazing 1,256 minute run.

Ending his time in Scotland during August 2014, Southampton paid £10m for his services - with the insertion of a sell-on clause netting the Magpies £2.5m.

In only his fifth competitive outing for the Saints, Fraser had virtually nothing to do in a 4-0 home win over Newcastle - only marginally more tested in January 2015 when Southampton won 2-1 at SJP.

A broken kneecap that kept him out for ten months but a return to first team action in January 2016 saw him set a Saints record of six consecutive shut-outs.

Despite signing a new five year deal ahead of the 2017/18 season, Fraser lost his place in the side after a 0-5 loss to Spurs on Boxing Day that year and was relegated to bench duty from then on.

Returning for a solitary outing in May 2019, he was persuaded to rejoin former boss Neil Lennon on loan at Celtic the following season.

Rumoured to be rejoining Celtic, Fraser stayed a Saint and after Alex McCarthy tested positive for COVID, made a memorable return in January 2021 with a clean sheet against Champions Liverpool.

He was on the bench for their visit to Tyneside in the 2021/22 season, facing the Magpies in the return game at St. Mary's Stadium when memorably beaten by Bruno Guimaraes' back-heel.

An unexpected switch to Tottenham Hotspur came in June 2022 and following an injury to Hugo Lloris, Fraser had a spell in the first team in February 2023.

1992 Michael Richardson born, Newcastle.
(2010-14)

Midfielder who made a belated start to life at Newcastle, playing for Walker Central and working as an apprentice electrician for Newcastle City Council before a successful Toon trial in 2010.

Appearing for the U18s and reserves, Michael operated as a box to box midfielder but also deputised at full back.

An unused substitute for a Premier League visit to Fulham in February 2011, Michael went on loan to League One side Leyton Orient.

Debuting at Walsall in August 2011, his first senior start was eventful; scoring at Southend in a League Cup tie before missing a penalty in a shootout.

Sidelined through injury after reurning to Tyneside, a further loan to League Two Gillingham followed in March 2013.

Following trials at Birmingham City and St. Mirren, Michael spent the first half of the 2013/14 season on loan at League Two Accrington Stanley.

Back on Tyneside his final outing in a Toon shirt saw him net at SJP during a 4-0 win over Blyth Spartans in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final.

Beginning the following season on trial at Hibernian, Blyth was Michael's next destination, coming off the bench during memorable FA Cup ties against Hartlepool United and Birmingham City.

Signing for Northern League South Shields in 2016, he appeared as a substitute in their 4-0 FA Vase Final win over Cleethorpes at Wembley Stadium in 2017.

Released by the Mariners in 2018, Richardson joined Hebburn Town, scoring at Wembley in May 2021 as they beat Consett 3-2 in the FA Vase Final.

Off the field, Michael gained his UEFA A Licence and coached at both New College Durham and Newcastle United Foundation.

January 2021 found him back at United when appointed as kitman, working with the reserves and senior side.

He also continued playing at non-league level with Newcastle Blue Star and West Allotment Celtic.

1993 Dan Taylor born, Newcastle.
(2009-12)

Centre forward who made his U18 debut against Watford in August 2009, netting the first of three goals that season at Barnsley the following March.

Taylor's second season had brought him nine goals from 15 starts by the time he turned 18 - with a first reserve outing in March 2011 against Arsenal at SJP.

However, Dan was among a clutch of players released by United and the second half of the 2011/12 season saw him on loaned at Northern League Ashington, also appearing for Bradford City's reserve side on trial.

He joined Oldham Athletic in June 2012, scoring against Crewe Alexandra that December and coming off the bench in Oldham's 3-2 FA Cup Fourth Round home win over Liverpool the following month.

Released by the Latics at the end of the season, Taylor joined Spennymoor Town and netted against Newcastle U21s in a friendly during August 2014.

Within a month however Dan had signed for Northern League side Newcastle Benfield.

1993 Newcastle reserves were held 0-0 at SJP by Aston Villa in the Central League, with Bjorn Kristensen making what was to be his final Magpies appearance.

The Dane departed within 48 hours to be reunited with former Magpies boss Jim Smith at Portsmouth.

Also bowing out for United was Ernest "Wire" Mtawali - a 24 year-old Malawi international midfielder playing the second and game of his trial period from South African side Mamelodi Sundowns.

Slightly bizarrely, Kristensen and Mtawali shared the same birthday, albeit in different years.

A point against a City side who would be relegated doesn't sound significant, but this Monday night televised match marked a turning point in our fortunes.

At half-time United looked utterly clueless but Kevin Keegan's ploy of fielding Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen finally paid off in a much improved second period, when only a lack of nerve stopped the Magpies seeking a winner as they ended a run of four successive defeats.

The supposedly 'tactically inept' KK played Owen in a slightly withdrawn role that bore fruit over the rest of the campaign.

This loss was overshadowed by a horrific challenge on Newcastle's Massadio Haidara by Callum McManaman that incredibly didn't break our player's leg.

Assistant boss John Carver and Latics coach Graham Barrow were red-carded following an altercation at half-time and insult was added to injury when Arouna Kone scored in the final minute after a corner was flicked on by Maynor Figueroa's hand.

The Haidara incident prompted an FA rule change as McManaman escaped censure both by referee Mark Halsey on the day and by subsequent retrospective charge arising from video footage - the linesman claiming he saw the challenge at the time.

Newcastle's second defeat in five days made it an uncomfortable international break after an unprecedented and eventful night at Goodison Park.

The Magpies dominated the first half without scoring but the course of the game changed when an environmental
protestor lashed himself to a goalpost in the 49th minute.

That caused over 15 minutes of additional time to be played, with the Toffees (by then down to ten men) stealing victory when Alex Iwobi finished off a swift counter-attack.

Alexander Isak hit added time goals at the end of each half to give Newcastle a fabulous win at the City Ground in a Friday evening.

What had looked like being another case of being robbed by an official again at this venue was thankfully righted from the spot when Isak kept his cool to tuck in the winner in front of a jubilant away end.

That came after Elliot Anderson had wrongly been denied his first goal for the club by a lengthy VAR review for offside.
