Moor the merrier
Update: it's anticipated that the
celebration event on March 29th will be centred around the Town Moor.
Newcastle United confirm that they will
stage an event marking their Carabao Cup success on Saturday March 29th
- further details are yet to be announced.
That follows the international break and comes during weekend when FA Cup
quarter-finals take place. The Magpies return to action the following
Wednesday - April 2nd - when Brentford visit SJP in the Premier League.
Although Eddie Howe and some players flew back to Tyneside with the
silverware on Monday, celebrations had to be deferred due to players heading
away for international duty.
The manager and the rest of the squad will head to Dubai in the coming days for warm weather training.

New stocks of the
ever-popular Ferdinand reversible bucket hat have now reached
Football Bobbles and are available to purchase here

We had one up for grabs and asked you to predict the final score in
Sunday's Carabao Cup Final.
There were multiple correct entries
meaning that a random draw was required to decide the hat winner - and that
produced the name of Anthony Owens.

Alastair Graham in the 20th minute.
That's how it stayed, with another three points raising the Magpies
up to a seasonal high position of fifth.

2025/26:
ST price rise confirmed
NUFC have announced 2025/26
season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their
charges,
a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a
shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources
for supporters.
Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have
all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard
pricing level.
As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per
game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).
There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of
concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to
several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.
A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of
the previous eight month option.
ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to
confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.
Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.

Born Or Died:
1941
Charlie Woods born, Whitehaven, Cumbria. (1959-62)

Inside
right who joined Newcastle from Cleator Moor Celtic for the princely sum of
£25 and appeared for the N's junior side.
48 hours after scoring in a 3-4 friendly loss to Barcelona at SJP in August
1960, Charlie
made his competitive senior bow at Fulham - netting again
but was on the wrong end of another 3-4 defeat.
Woods played most of his first team games in that relegation season,
only appearing twice more after Norman Smith replaced Charlie Mitten as
United boss in October 1961.
Joe Harvey's arrival ahead for the 1962/63 season then saw Woods overlooked
totally and he fell behind Dave Hilley and Alan Suddick before leaving in
November.
Signing for AFC Bournemouth at a cost of £5,000, Charlie later appeared
for Crystal Palace,
Ipswich, Watford, Colchester United (on loan) and Blackburn Rovers.
His first coaching role was at Ewood Park in 1972 and within a year he joined
Ipswich, being reunited on the Portman Road staff with former Town boss
Bobby Robson.
After over two decades at Ipswich, Charlie left to scout for Spurs, before
following Bobby Robson to St. James' Park where he became Chief Scout.
Briefly accompanying Robson during his spell as advisor to the Republic of
Ireland, Woods then returned to Ipswich Town before retiring in summer 2009.
However, it was reported later that year that Charlie had been recruited by
Harry Redknapp to scout for Spurs.
Woods remains a regular attendee at Portman Road, usually resplendent in his club
tie - that's a Newcastle United club tie.

1968
Temuri Ketsbaia born, Gale, Georgia. (1997-2000)

The popular madman/hoarding
molester was signed on a free transfer from AEK Athens as Kenny Dalglish
rebuilt the squad ahead of of his first full season in charge at SJP.
Things began well, with Ketsbaia's first goal ensuring qualification for the
Group Stage of the Champions League - his extra time effort securing a 2-2 draw
in Zagreb.
And his celebration after scoring against Bolton in January 1998 has gone down
in history, his shirt going into the crowd and only the intervention of
colleagues stopping his boots following. The Gallowgate End hoardings also took a
bit a howking....
That first season ended with an appearance at Wembley in the FA Cup Final but
following the departure of Dalglish and arrival of Ruud Gullit, Temuri gradually fell from favour as Silvio Maric and Duncan Ferguson arrived.
A second FA Cup appearance still followed though - with another loser's medal -
and he remained at the club when Bobby Robson took over in September 1999.
Retaining a place in the squad although still often reduced to a cameo subs role,
Ketsy had a third unsuccessful Wembley runout for the Magpies when a late
substitute in the 2-1 FA Cup Semi Final defeat to Chelsea.
Never the most talented player and prone to being over-excited when on the
ball, he was sold to Wolves for £900K in
August 2000.
Despite scored on his debut against Sheffield Wednesday he didn't have the best
of times at Molineux and moved on to Dundee in October 2001 (where he played
alongside his Georgian colleague and future Magpie loanee Zurab Khizanishvili).
Temuri ended his playing career at Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta and after
taking over as manager, guided them to the Group Stages of the Champions
League in 2008.
However, he stood down as their boss in April 2009 following the departure of
the club's President and turned up in charge of Greek side Olympiakos within a
month.
His time at the Piraeus side was short though, with his departure announced in
September - despite his side winning two and drawing the other one of their
first three games, without conceding a goal.
November 2009 saw Temuri appointed national team coach of Georgia, a position
he relinquished in November 2014.
A return to club management then came in August 2015 with Cypriot side APOEL
Nicosia, followed by a brief ill-starred spell at Greeks AEK Athens the
following year.
2017 saw Ketsbaia take the helm at Russian side Orenburg,
returning to Cyprus in 2019 with Anorthosis Famagusta for the third time in his
career.
2022 then brought a further change when he was appointed Head Coach of Cyprus.
That came to an end in September 2024 following a 0-4 home defeat to Kosovo.

1982
David Rayner born, Tauranga, New Zealand.
(2000-01)
One of the
more exotic players to appear in our
academy, David represented host nation New Zealand at
the 1999 U17 World Cup and caught the eye of
Newcastle Academy coach Alan Irvine who was
there scouting.
He and went on to gain a
single senior cap the following year (as a
substitute against Vanuata in the Oceanian
Nations Cup).
Released by Newcastle in May 2001, David
later appeared in the Northern League for
both Morpeth Town and Ashington before
returning to his native New Zealand when
signing for the Auckland Kingz.
He then returned to the North East - living in Whickham
- and once again appeared for
both Morpeth and Ashington.
May 2009 saw Rayner return to SJP, appearing as
a second half substitute for the Colliers in
their Northumberland Senior Cup Final defeat
by Newcastle.
Having worked in the health and fitness
industry back in New Zealand, David later
joined the staff at the Eldon Square site of
Premier Training International.
1991 Darnel Situ born Rouen, France. (2011)

Defensive midfielder who was with Racing Club Lens when
appearing for Newcastle reserves as a trialist during August 2011.
Situ was joined in a pre-season training ground game against Gateshead by
fellow Lens player William Remy.
The pair came to Tyneside after ex-Lens player Mehdi Abeid made a
similar trip some months earlier and succeeded in winning a permanent deal with
United.
No deal was forthcoming for Remy but Newcastle did offer terms to Situ - only
for the player to reject them in favour of a move to Swansea City just days
later.
However, that transfer was blocked due to problems with international clearance
and not formalised until January 2012.
A French youth international, Situ got as far as the subs bench for Swansea but
failed to make a competitive senior debut and was sidelined for a year with an
Achilles injury.
Released in the summer of 2014, he signed for Danish side AGF Aarhus but within
a year had switched to ID Hodd in Norway.
2016 found him with Slovenians FC Koper but he'd departed by the following
year and hasn't been heard of since.
1995 Antonio Barreca born Milan, Italy. (2019)

While confirmation of a club record deal for
the purchase of Miguel Almiron was awaited, slightly less attention was paid to the loan
arrival of this Monaco left back.
United's attempts to bolster their options in that position had come adrift
days earlier, when a loan move for Lazio's Jordan Lukaku floundered on medical
grounds.
A deal was quickly revived to sign Barreca for the remainder of the season
with an option to then make the deal permanent.
And just 48 hours after becoming a Magpie, he made his debut as a substitute in a 0-1 loss to Spurs at Wembley Stadium.
However those four minutes would be the entirety of his SJP career, Rafa
Benitez naming Antonio on the bench four times without bringing him on to
the field.
That made him our least used PL combatant, beating James Coppinger
(11 minutes).
With Torino as a youngster, he spent
the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons on loan at Serie B sides Cittadella and Cagliari - helping the latter to gain promotion.
Returning to Torino and making his senior bow for them during August 2016, Barreca agreed a five year contract with AS Monaco just under two years
later.
However, the Italian U21 international failed to become a first team regular
and was made available for loan in early 2019.
Following his time on Tyneside, Barreca made a temporary switch along
the coast to Serie A side Genoa the following season.
October 2020 saw Antonio loaned out by Monaco once again, remaining in
Italy with Fiorentina and before a temporary posting to Serie B side Lecce
in 2021.
Returning to Cagliari in August 2022 he signed a three-year deal, but 12
months later had moved on to Sampdoria.
February 2025 then brought a short-term switch to Serie B side Sudtirol.

Revenge was gained for a six-goal
stuffing at Bloomfield Road
earlier in the season although United conceded first, with former
favourite Alan Suddick claiming an assist.
Pop Robson moved infield to centre forward at that point and his brace lifted
some of the gloom from the relegation-haunted Magpies.

A devastating end to a pulsating game came when the visitors netted
a late goal to silence celebration that had erupted just moments
earlier, when Keith Dyson netted.
Had the Anderlecht
defender Heylens (who wore a wig) not cleared off the line when the
score was 2-0, things could have been very different. As it was though,
the Belgians progressed on away goals and after beating Inter Milan in
the semis, lost out to Arsenal.

Meanwhile at SJP, a crowd of 18,650 saw Blyth Spartans beaten 0-2 by Enfield in
the Semi-Final of the FA Amateur Cup.
Gibson put the visitors ahead after just three minutes and John Butterfield
doubled that lead in the 33rd minute.

Nine days after the "riot" game at SJP that had been
annulled by the FA, the sides met at Goodison Park.
Despite United hitting the Forest goal frame three times no result was
achieved and the tie went to a second replay.
Forest protested that they should host it, but it was scheduled for
three days later at the same neutral venue on Merseyside.

Jamie Scott made his United bow in a game of three spot kicks:
Mickey Burns putting the visitors ahead before Mick Mahoney saved a
45th minute effort by Steve Finnieston.
2-1 ahead though, Newcastle were pegged back when substitute Ken Swain
made no mistake with his late penalty.
1991 The endless search for new
faces during the Jim Smith era included USA World Cup defender John
Doyle (pictured), who played in a 3-1 reserve team victory at Roker Park.
However,
Doyle's chief contribution was to concede two penalties with reckless
tackles.
The scorers for the reserves were Lee Clark, Billy Askew and
Scott Sloan. Doyle did get another chance a few days later at
Huddersfield but wasn't retained.
After spells with San Francisco
Blackhawks and also teams in Sweden and Germany Doyle ended his days
playing for San Antonio Clash, who were an American soccer team, not a
punk tribute band. He then coached the team, renamed as San Jose
Earthquakes.

Visiting 'keeper Les Sealey kept the score down to a respectable level as
Newcastle took out their frustrations on the Hammers.
The 31st minute dismissal of
Steve Potts for two fouls on David Ginola within 60 seconds wasn't a turning point.
Kevin Keegan: "My only criticism is that we passed for passing sake
towards the end.
"I wanted them to go for the jugular. But we had 40 shots at goal which
must be something of a record. I'm nit-picking I suppose."

United's shirts carried a "CenterParcs"
logo rather than the usual brown ale advert due to a French
TV ban on alcohol advertising - the fact that pitchside hoardings
advertised Vaux products simply backed up what many had said for years...
The game itself was instantly forgettable, United played without any recognised strikers
and consequently well beaten by a home side featuring future Mag Franck
Dumas.
The away turnout was tremendous as was the
support, locals completely bemused by the Toon invasion and their
memorable choruses of "In your Monaco slums..."

Crowd protests overshadowed this midweek game, the
first since Sunday tabloid revelations of the "Toongate"
scandal.
Douglas Hall and Freddy Shepherd didn't attend but the team were
affected by the furore and soon trailed by two goals.
Alan Shearer reduced the arrears with an unstoppable free-kick but the
basement club won for the first time in 17 games, ending a run of eight
straight defeats.
The London media descended in force and camera crews and snappers looking for post-match material
found the anger of the crowd directed at them, with a few seeking shelter in a police van.

2002 despite never having made a senior appearance for Newcastle, Gary Caldwell received his first senior international call-up
when selected for Scotland.
Berti Vogts included the 19 year-old (who was on loan at
Hibernian)

2005 The UEFA Cup Quarter Final draw paired Newcastle with
Sporting Lisbon once again - after a pre-season meeting at SJP and a tie on Tyneside earlier in the group stages of
the same competition.
Sporting had reached this stage by disposing of the smoggies.

This Sunday fixture saw the Addicks gain some relegation respite, while
our faint fears of demotion would be allayed by five points from our next three games.
