Premier
League:
Seagulls switch tbc
Confirmation of dates and start times for
the closing Premier League fixture rounds of the season is due over the
coming three weeks, with this Friday expected to bring news of TV changes
for matchweek 35.
That includes Newcastle's visit to Brighton & Hove Albion on or
around Saturday May 3rd, which falls on the early May Bank Holiday Weekend.
For once, there are no scheduled rail engineering works directly impacting
travellers from the North East.
PS: We have no idea whether our trip to the Amex will move for TV, but
2023/24 PL games that weekend were played between the Friday night and
Monday night*.
* There was also a Thursday game last season, but that was rearranged from a
previous date - both teams involved then playing again during that
weekend.
Howe's
hoppings:
Moor the merrier
Update: it's anticipated that the
celebration event on March 29th will be centred around the Town Moor.
Newcastle United confirm that they will
stage an event marking their Carabao Cup success on Saturday March 29th
- further details are yet to be announced.
That follows the international break and comes during weekend when FA Cup
quarter-finals take place. The Magpies return to action the following
Wednesday - April 2nd - when Brentford visit SJP in the Premier League.
Although Eddie Howe and some players flew back to Tyneside with the
silverware on Monday, celebrations had to be deferred due to players heading
away for international duty.
The manager and the rest of the squad will head to Dubai in the coming days for warm weather training.

Update:
Rob removed
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliott
has left his position as manager of Crawley Town, with the club 22nd in
League One and likely to be relegated.
His assistant Louis Storey - himself a former Magpie reserve defender - has
assumed interim charge.
Elliott's exit from the Broadfield Stadium means that two former Gateshead
bosses are currently unemployed - Mike Willamson also clubless after leaving
Carlisle.
Giveaway:
Wembley winner

New stocks of the
ever-popular Ferdinand reversible bucket hat have now reached
Football Bobbles and are available to purchase here
now.
We had one up for grabs and asked you to predict the final score in
Sunday's Carabao Cup Final.
There were multiple correct entries
meaning that a random draw was required to decide the hat winner - and that
produced the name of Anthony Owens.
2025/26:
Pre-season
rumours
Following recent claims of a possible pre-season visit to Hong
Kong by Newcastle United, the Straits Times has written
that the Magpies are one of several clubs in talks to play games in Singapore
this July.
The newspaper also names Arsenal and AC Milan plus one further
unidentified club as possible participants in kickabouts at the
55,000 capacity National Stadium.
Asian media reports earlier this year also linked Arsenal and AC
Milan (plus Spurs) with pre-season games played in the Kai Tak
Stadium in Hong Kong.
Talk of a pre-season visit to Celtic on July 19th for Eddie Howe's
side has done the rounds for some time now.
U18s:
Toon teens on form
There's no competitive fixture this coming weekend for Newcastle
U18s, delaying their efforts to extend a current four game
winning run in the league.
Chris Moore's side return to action on Saturday week (29th) when
Everton visit Little Benton - United beaten 2-3 by them on
Merseyside earlier in the season.
Victory over the Toffees would make it five in a row for the
youngsters for only the fourth time in the current youth league
format that was adopted back in 2004.
The young Magpies racked up five game winning runs during February
2014 and March 2018; their longest sequence to date coming in
December 2008 when eight successive U18 league victories were
recorded.

2025/26:
ST price rise confirmed
NUFC have announced 2025/26
season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their
charges,
a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a
shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources
for supporters.
Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have
all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard
pricing level.
As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per
game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).
There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of
concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to
several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.
A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of
the previous eight month option.
ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to
confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.
Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.

Brentford
(h)
The Magpies return to Premier
League action on Wednesday April 2nd, when Thomas Frank brings his
Bees to Gallowgate for a non-televised 7.45pm start.
This will be only the eighth time that the two clubs have met in top-flight
competition, United winning five and drawing one of the first six before
Brentford notched up their maiden success in West London last
December.
Results from
PL games played while Newcastle were at Wembley left Eddie Howe's side sixth
in the table on 47 points, with Brentford six points and five places behind
that having played a game more.

Born Or Died:
1942 Ronald Wyn Davies born, Caenarfon, Wales.
(1966-71)

The man known as the "Mighty Wyn" will forever
be associated with United's Fairs Cup
adventures, helping secure trophy success
in 1969 and scoring ten goals across three
seasons of participation.
Wyn's early playing career came as a part-time with the Deiniiolen and Llanberis
clubs, while working as a slate miner.
Joining Caernarfon Town, Davies then signed for Wrexham in 1960. A £20,000
move to Bolton Wanderers followed two years later and the first of 34 full
Welsh caps came in 1964 - against England at Wembley Stadium.
Having proved a dangerous opponent in games against the Trotters, Joe Harvey
convinced Davies to join Newcastle in October 1966, his £80,000 fee an NUFC
club
record.
(It later transpired that United had failed to complete a deal exactly 12
months earlier when wage demands couldn't be met).
Making his bow in a 0-3 home derby defeat that month, it took Wyn five games
to get off the mark, doing so in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at SJP.
And the following January saw him plunder his only treble in our colours, in
an FA Cup tie against Coventry City at Highfield Road.
The following season saw Wyn improve his scoring prowess as United rose from
a perilous 20th place finish to 10th - and ended up with a Fairs Cup place.
His aerial prowess saw 1968's Manfred Mann cover of Bob Dylan's "Mighty
Quinn" re-worded by the Leazes End into "Mighty Wyn."
The 1970/71 season would be Wyn's last as a Magpie: netting against
Inter Milan both home and away but scoring just twice in the league as
injuries took their toll.
Amid interest from Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday, the 29 year-old
joined Manchester City that summer for £60,000.
Just a year later though he was sold on to Manchester United (turning down a
move to Old Trafford when joining Newcastle).
Later spells with
Blackpool, Stockport County and Crewe Alexndra followed before a knee problem curtailed
Wyn's
career.
Playing his final games for Bangor City, Davies later famously became a baker
for Warburtons in Bolton and remained in the area following his retirement.
A regular half time guest on the pitch at
Bolton versus Newcastle games during the Premier League era, he received a far more vocal reception
from the away contingent than the Reebok regulars.

1959
Dave Beasant born, Willesden, London. (1988-89)
Goalkeeper tempted from Wimbledon
to join Willie McFaul's new-look United at a cost of £850K, having just helped
the Dons to Wembley FA Cup success against Liverpool.
However his debut at Goodison Park - along with Andy Thorn, John Robertson and
John Hendrie - ended in a 0-4 defeat that United never really recovered from
that season.
Willie McFaul gave way to Jim Smith and by January 1989, Beasant was on his way
back to London, joining Chelsea for £725K.
Four years at Stamford Bridge saw him earn his fair share of uncomplimentary
headlines after some erratic displays, but also receive international
recognition with England. It has also to be recorded that Dave was sidelined for a spell after dropping a
glass jar of salad cream on his foot.....
After loan spells with Grimsby Town and Wolves, Beasant joined Southampton in
1993, remaining there until 1997.
His next stop was Nottingham Forest, after which he seemingly tried to emulate
John Burridge's "have gloves, will travel" at Portsmouth, Tottenham, Bradford City, Wigan Athletic and Brighton -
playing for the Seagulls aged 44.
One final transfer took him to Fulham and although Dave never played a
competitive game for them, he was named as an unused substitute in both League Cup
and Premiership games during 2003.
Joining the Cottagers coaching staff - as well as assisting Wombles pal Lawrie Sanchez as Northern Ireland goalkeeping
coach - Beasant was swiftly rehired by incoming Cottagers boss Chris Coleman
within hours of following Sanchez out.
January 2008 then saw Dave unveiled as
"International Consultant and Talent Evaluator"
of Charleston-based USA soccer side, West
Virginia Chaos.
Later assisting fellow former
Magpie Mark McGhee at Bristol Rovers, Beasant also worked at Glenn Hoddle's
youth Academy and had an involvement with agents.
As a one-off in 2013, he donned the gloves to play for Southern League side
North Greenford United - also turning out for vintage Chelsea and
England XI's.
2014 found him coaching goalkeepers at Stevenage, registered as a player aged
55 and named on the bench for a League Two visit to Carlisle in October
2014 - 12 years after his last senior appearance.
Stepping into the breach following injury to his goalkeeping son Sam, Beasant
wasn't required, missing the chance to become the oldest
professional player in English league history as a consequence.

1975 Silvio Maric born,
Zagreb, Croatia.
(1999-2000)

Attacking midfielder signed from Croatia Zagreb for £3.65m where he'd played
with Mark Viduka against Newcastle in the Champions League back in
1997.
Debuting on a heavy SJP pitch in a 4-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Everton, initial claims
over his fitness were accepted as reasons for a lack of impact.
However it soon became clear that Maric was ill-suited to Premiership football
and although professing himself happy to play in any role, was uncomfortable
on the left and preferred to play behind a front duo.
A late sub appearance in our FA Cup Semi Final win over Spurs was followed by an
equally low impact appearance in the final against Manchester United at Wembley.
Silvio's second season saw him instantly fall out with new manager Bobby Robson,
missing a team meeting and remaining in England as the squad
flew to Sofia.
Maric continued to test Robson's patience, but was to finally break his scoring
duck later that season, in the UEFA Cup.
Injuries to Temuri Ketsbaia and Duncan Ferguson plus the ineligibility of new
boy Kevin Gallacher saw Robson turn to Maric to partner Alan Shearer in Zurich
- and the Croat duly netted in a 2-1 success.
On target again in the home leg, Maric soon faded from the
scene again and angered Robson further by trying to set up his own loan move back to
Zagreb.
Reserve team diehards saw his 11 minute treble against Bedlington Terriers in the closing weeks of the 1999/00 season, but
that was too little, too late.
Failing to turn up at the airport for the end-of-season Caribbean tour saw him branded "a disgrace" by Robson, who managed to claw back £2m
from Porto, something we called "the footballing equivalent of turning
water into wine."
After a similarly ill-starred Portuguese sojourn, Maric returned to
Croatia Zagreb before signing for Greeks Panathinaikos.
Returning to Croatia Zagreb in 200, Silvio then opted to hang
up his boots and became a TV pundit in his homeland.

superior to that anticipated."

especially if you hail from Boldon. Such a fate befell goalkeeper Billy
Kelsey, who didn't disgrace himself.
However, in his next game he conceded four first half goals at Liverpool
and was soon on his way back to non-league football.

the Blades - after missing a great chance in the very first minute.
Three further individual efforts were well dispatched though - the second and
third after he'd briefly gone off to have his wrist strapped up.
Victory pulled Newcastle clear of the relegation zone and although it left the
visitors in the mire, they would avoid the drop by one place.

The home side were inspired by former Magpie Ivor Allchurch, who quickly
cancelled out Ron McGarry's penalty conversion before Mel Charles gave the hosts
a half time lead.
The spoils were shared when Bobby Cummings took advantage of a poor back pass
and fired home after the break.

Tommy Docherty's side arrived on
Tyneside with a reputation for playing attacking football on their
travels and left with both points thanks to some generous Magpies
defending.
Tommy Cassidy's poor backpass saw Stuart Pearson open the
scoring before John Bird lobbed his own goalkeeper Roger Jones.
Newcastle rallied though and led at half time, thanks to some goal
poaching by Mickey Burns, Malcolm Macdonald's header and Alan Gowling
diverting Supermac's shot past Alex Stepney.
It couldn't last though; Pat Howard headed a Sammy McIlroy corner into
his own net before Pearson tucked away Steve Coppell's centre.
Graham Oates made his bow from the bench as the home side battled in vain to
find an equaliser - Stewart Houston voted man of the match
after a trio of goal line clearances.
Trouble flared between home followers and 7,000 travelling fans, with 19 arrests made and ten
police officers hospitalised.

The memory often plays tricks, but this remains the
most one-sided of games - in our favour. Cue recollections of
City breaking five times, with Gary Lineker bagging a hat-trick and
hitting the post....
In reality the young Lineker scored just once, but the consensus was
definitely that the Magpies should have won 4-1 not the Foxes....
1991
United's home league meeting with Oxford United was abandoned after
heavy rain flooded the SJP
pitch and made play impossible - although pools of standing water before
kick-off made the decision to even start the match controversial.
Referee John Kirkby bowed to the inevitable and halted proceedings at
half time, when Newcastle were leading thanks to a 34th minute goal from
Mick Quinn, witnessed by just 9,658 supporters.
Team: Burridge, Watson,
Stimson, Aitken, Scott, Kristensen, Dillon, Peacock, Quinn, McGhee,
Brock. Subs: O'Brien, Hunt.

Beaten 0-3 by the Seagulls on Tyneside earlier in the
season without getting a shot on target,
Newcastle lost by the same margin in
Sussex and once again
failed to trouble the Albion goal.
A trio of draws ahead of what was dubbed a must-not-lose game
counted for nothing: a pathetic display
increasing our belief that the dressing
room was in revolt against Steve Bruce.
