Gordon injury concern

Ruled out of Newcastle's next game as he completes a three match club suspension, Anthony Gordon got some pitch time for England in the closing stages of Friday's 2-0 home victory over Albania.

However he quickly picked up what was described as a hip injury, spending much of his 16 minutes on the field hobbling and receiving further treatment at full time.

The extent of the problem is still to be ascertained, but Gordon's participation in Monday's England meeting with Latvia looks in serious doubt.

Town Moor -
register now

Update: NUFC confirm that access to the Moor will be from 1.30pm on Saturday March 29th and that the event will end at 8pm.

Alcohol won't be allowed, no parking will be provided and it's standing only - no seating (an area accommodating wheelchairs will be set aside but must be pre-booked).

Whether there will be anything further on the day than this stage-managed event - with the players presented to the crowd from a stage - is unclear. How the squad will arrive on the Moor is also yet to be confirmed.

From NUFC, Friday:

Newcastle United will celebrate the club’s historic Carabao Cup Final victory with a free open-air event on Saturday 29th March.

Supporters will get the chance to see Eddie Howe and the first team players with the cup for the first time since last Sunday’s famous win at Wembley.

Set around a large main stage on the Town Moor, adjacent to the Great North Road, the open-air event will be free to attend. Supporters are asked to register their interest to assist with planning.

It will feature a DJ, live band, ‘Road to Wembley’ highlights, a screening of the full cup final and special guests.

The team will then proudly lift the Carabao Cup on stage – presenting the club’s first domestic trophy for 70 years to the city.

The celebrations will close with a spectacular show from club partner Sela and further event details will be published ahead of the show.

Fans will have the opportunity to register interest until midnight on Sunday 23 March as follows:

Season ticket holders from 1pm Friday
Members from 3pm Friday
Public from 10am Saturday.

You must have a Newcastle United account to register your interest. Registration is one per supporter number. Adults will be able to add one junior ticket to their registration with the adult supporter number.

Registrations must be submitted here. No email/ telephone/ in-person registrations can be accepted.

Registering your interest does not guarantee you access to the event. Further details will follow to those that register their interest with the club.

Live TV delay

Hopes that the Premier League would stick to their own published timetable and confirm TV rescheduling for matchweek 35 on Friday proved to be misplaced.

That leaves Newcastle fans left hanging on to finalise travel plans for the visit to Brighton & Hove Albion on the early May Bank Holiday Weekend of May 5th.

For once, there are no scheduled rail engineering works directly impacting travellers from the North East.

Match report

Update:
Rob removed

Former Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliott has left his position as manager of Crawley Town, with the club 22nd in League One and likely to be relegated.

His assistant Louis Storey - himself a former Magpie reserve defender - has assumed interim charge.

Elliott's exit from the Broadfield Stadium means that two former Gateshead bosses are currently unemployed - Mike Willamson also clubless after leaving Carlisle.

Giveaway:
Wembley winner

New stocks of the ever-popular Ferdinand reversible bucket hat have now reached Football Bobbles and are available to purchase here now.

We had one up for grabs and asked you to predict the final score in Sunday's Carabao Cup Final.

There were multiple correct entries meaning that a random draw was required to decide the hat winner - and that produced the name of Anthony Owens.

2025/26:
Pre-season rumours

Following recent claims of a possible pre-season visit to Hong Kong by Newcastle United, the Straits Times has written that the Magpies are one of several clubs in talks to play games in Singapore this July.

The newspaper also names Arsenal and AC Milan plus one further unidentified club as possible participants in kickabouts at the 55,000 capacity National Stadium.

Asian media reports earlier this year also linked Arsenal and AC Milan (plus Spurs) with pre-season games played in the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.

Talk of a pre-season visit to Celtic on July 19th for Eddie Howe's side has done the rounds for some time now.

NSC:

This season's Northumberland Senior Cup Final between Heaton Stannington and Morpeth Town will take place at Gallowgate on Wednesday May 14th

U18s:
Youngsters on form

There's no competitive fixture this coming weekend for Newcastle U18s, delaying their efforts to extend a current four game winning run in the league.

Chris Moore's side return to action on Saturday week (29th) when Everton visit Little Benton - United beaten 2-3 by them on Merseyside earlier in the season.

Victory over the Toffees would make it five in a row for the youngsters for only the fourth time in the current youth league format that was adopted back in 2004.

The young Magpies racked up five game winning runs during February 2014 and March 2018; their longest sequence to date coming in December 2008 when eight successive U18 league victories were recorded.

ST price rise confirmed

NUFC have announced 2025/26 season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their charges, a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources for supporters.

Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard pricing level.

As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).

There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.

A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of the previous eight month option.

ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.

Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.

2024/25:
Brentford (h)

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Wednesday April 2nd, when Thomas Frank brings his Bees to Gallowgate for a non-televised 7.45pm start.

This will be only the eighth time that the two clubs have met in top-flight competition, United winning five and drawing one of the first six before Brentford notched up their maiden success in West London last December.

Results from PL games played while Newcastle were at Wembley left Eddie Howe's side sixth in the table on 47 points, with Brentford six points and five places behind that having played a game more.

Team: Anthony Gordon will serve the third and final game of his suspension, while Sven Botman and Lewis Hall remain sidelined following surgery.

Injury victim Jamaal Lascelles is nearing a return to the squad a year after his most recent appearance.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/6
The draw 10/3
BFC win 12/5

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

BFC: Fabio Carvalho remains out but Michael Kayode, Mathias Jensen, Igor Thiago, Josh Dasilva and Aaron Hickey could all return.

Since a 1-2 loss at Chelsea last December, Brentford are unbeaten on the road in the PL: a 0-0 draw at Brighton followed by wins at Southampton (5-0), Palace (2-1), West Ham (1-0), Leicester (4-0) and Bournemouth (2-1).

Born Or Died:

1897 Peter Mooney born, Walker.
(1919-27)

Christened Edward but known as Peter, Mooney's midfield talents were noted with Walker Celtic and he moved to SJP at the start of the 1919/20 season, appearing for United's junior side, the Swifts.

Debuting in an FA Cup loss to Huddersfield Town at SJP in January 1920, Mooney was in and around the first team until 1927 - appearing in United's FA Cup Final victory over Aston Villa in 1924.

But after playing in the first three games for the Championship-winning side of 1926/27, Mooney was never selected again and sold to Hull City the following summer.

That wasn't a success and he moved on to join Scunthorpe the following year, later returning to his first club Walker Celtic and other non-league sides in the North East.

A steward in a Washington social club in later life, Mooney is a distant relative of Jimmy Nail.

1925 Andy Donaldson born, Newcastle.
(1943-49)

Centre forward who made his first senior appearance in wartime football during the wartime league season of 1943/44.

However he had to wait until a 1-1 draw against Leicester City at SJP in April 1947/48 for his competitive club debut.

The following season saw Andy feature just five times in the first team and score one - away at Leicester - as United finished second in the league and were promoted.

He did win a league title that season though, netting 33 goals as Newcastle's reserve side won the Central League.

That put him into the first team for the following season, but after scoring five times in 13 games, Andy lost his starting place and was sold in January 1949 - as George Robledo arrived from Barnsley.

Donaldson became Middlesbrough's first five figure signing, moving for £17,500. However he wasn't a success at Ayresome Park - not helped by breaking his ankle at the start of the 1949/50 season.

Moving on to non-league Peterborough, he rediscovered his goalscoring touch and had two good seasons at London Road.

Joining Exeter City in 1953 - for whom former SJP colleague Norman Dodgin was player/boss - Andy returned to the Posh two years later and played on until illness forced his retirement in 1958.

A beneficiary when Newcastle faced Posh at London Road the following April in a friendly to raise funds for the PFA, Donaldson later worked at the local Hotpoint factory in the die cast department.

He died in June 1987.

1991 Death of Jimmy Boyd, 83.
(1925-35)

1995 Isaac Hayden born, Chelmsford.
(2016-present)

Ahead of their return to the Championship in the 2016/17 season, United's squad remodelling included the acquisition of Arsenal's 21 year-old defensive midfielder.

With Brentwood Juniors and Southend United as a youngster, Hayden came through the ranks at the Gunners and made his senior debut in September 2013.

Adding a single appearance a year later, Isaac joined Championship side Hull City on a season-long loan during July 2015 and played his part in helping the Tigers gain promotion (although he didn't feature in their Wembley playoff final success).

First sighted in a Newcastle shirt during a pre-season victory over Bohemians in July 2016, a competitive debut then followed in the season-opening loss at Fulham.

Scoring his first competitive goal against Reading in August of that year, Hayden was a regular starter for United until injury sidelined him in February 2017.

Returning to help the team to promotion and the Championship, Isaac began the Premier League season of 2017/18 in the first XI but found himself squeezed out and more often appearing from the bench.

That led to reports of Isaac seeking a close season transfer but a supposed move to Brighton never materialised, injuries to Jonjo Shelvey and then Mo Diame seeing him return to the side.

He scored what should have been the winner at Molineux but an equaliser deep in added time allowed Wolves to level.

Following the departure of Rafa Benitez, Isaac was selected by Steve Bruce until a red card during a 0-5 hammering at Leicester City in September 2019.

Despite the progress of the two Longstaff brothers, he returned to the starting lineup and scored the goal that beat Chelsea at Gallowgate early in 2020.

A solid season in a struggling side included appearances in central defence, but ended prematurely a couple of days before Hayden's birthday in March 2021.

A freak accident saw him stretchered with a serious knee injury during the 0-3 defeat at Brighton and that ended his season.

Isaac returned to action at the start of the 2021/22 season but another knee problem required surgery at the turn of the year, resulting in his omission from United's revised 25 man squad list.

Despite that, Hayden was charged by the FA for bringing the game into disrepute after tweeting comments about referee David Coote following the defeat at Chelsea.

Loaned to Championship side Norwich City in July 2022, Isaac's first game since Newcastle's 0-4 home loss to Manchester City in December 2021 came for the Canaries in October 2022, but fitness problems then affected his availability.

Aware that he had no future at United, despite being under contract at SJP until 2026, 2023/24 saw him play more regularly during loan spells at Belgian Standard Liege and second tier QPR.

Returning to SJP he playing twice for the U21s in the National League Cup before another temporary Championship switch, reuniting with SJP old boy Matt Ritchie at Portsmouth in early 2025.

Internationally, Isaac represented England at U16, U17, U18, U19 & U20 levels; U21 recognition coming against Bosnia at Walsall during October 2016.

A change of affiliation then followed the installation of Steve McClaren as national team coach of Jamaica, Hayden making his Reggae Boyz debut against the USA in Kingston during November 2024.

"Stubbins goals sink United" was the Pink headline as a brace from former Magpie Albert Stubbins helped the Reds to a first Anfield success since October.

However there was more than a suspicion that Newcastle were more interested in the following week's FA Cup Semi-Final against Blackburn Rovers: Stan Seymour travelling to Ewood Park for some last-minute scouting.

Jimmy Harrower's United debut was overshadowed by the penalty save pulled off by fellow newcomer Dave Hollins to deny Danny Blanchflower just before half time.

However the pivotal moment of this game  - and in some ways the whole season - was a disgraceful and unpenalised assault on United's Len White by Dave Mackay.

By the time White recovered from a broken leg the following August, his side were in Division Two following relegation - despite Len's 29 goal haul before injury. Spurs meanwhile won a League and Cup double.

Meanwhile Mickey Burns remained in dispute with the club and had his wages stopped after refusing to play for the reserves at the Baseball Ground.

The draw left United seventh, just two points off a promotion place. However they would decline to finish ninth after winning just on of their remaining eight league games.

1980 At SJP meanwhile, Billy Rafferty scored in a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the Central League.

Chris Waddle made his first return to Tyneside and put the visitors 2-1 ahead, Glenn Hoddle having hit a free kick that Billy Whitehurst soon cancelled out.

However John Anderson headed in a Peter Beardsley corner to level again, before Paul Gascoigne came close to giving Newcastle their sixth successive victory with a late free kick.

The point saw United reach their points total from the previous season with ten games left.

United went goal crazy as they avenged their 5-2 loss at Ewood Park, although the final score was a touch misleading, in that three of the five were scored in the last five minutes.

Our second FA Cup meeting with Chelsea in as many seasons was again settled by a fourth minute goal - this time scored by the Blues.

John Terry's volley ended dreams that Alan Shearer would close out his Newcastle career at Wembley in the final and match or better Jackie Milburn's club FA Cup goal record.

A 90th minute run by Shaun Wright-Phillips led to the dismissal of Robbie Elliott for a second yellow, although yet again a home player tumbled over with the slightest contact and fooled local official Steve Bennett.

2010 United defender Steven Taylor was hospitalised with a suspected broken jaw after a reported training ground bust-up with the club's leading goalscorer Andy Carroll.

It was rumoured that Carroll had damaged his hand in the incident and wouldn't feature in our game at Doncaster the following night.

In the event he played and scored at the Keepmoat - rather uncharacteristically clad in a pair of gloves, that may or may not have hidden some scrapes on his knuckles...

A second successive 1-0 home win thanks to an added-time goal lifted United to the dizzy heights of eighth position.

Loic Remy's 92nd minute winner had seen off Aston Villa a month earlier, but it was even deeper into added time when Papiss Cisse headed in Hatem Ben Arfa's cross.

In addition to thanking the Frenchman, Cisse could also express his gratitude to the tactics of Tony Pulis, whose Eagles side had wasted time right from the first whistle.
