Lasses in double
derby delight

A club record home attendance of 38,502 for Newcastle United Women were at Gallowgate on Sunday, as they completed a seasonal double over the mackems.

A 78th minute strike from Shania Hayles divided the sides and left the Magpies sixth in the table, ten points behind leaders Birmingham but playing two games less.

Club CEO Darren Eales and ambassador Bob Moncur took to the field at half time with the Carabao Cup, won by the men's side at Wembley a week earlier.

NUFCW @ SJP - competitive games:

2024/25 mackems won 1-0 (38,502)
2024/25 Southampton drew 1-1 (11,620)
2023/24 Portsmouth won 2-1 (22,307)
2022/23 Bradford City won 6-1 (24,092)
2022/23 Barnsley won 2-1 (28,565)
2021/22 Alnwick Town won 4-0 (22,134)

Update:
Gordon injury concern

Ruled out of Newcastle's next game as he completes a three match club suspension, Anthony Gordon got some pitch time for England in the closing stages of Friday's 2-0 home victory over Albania.

However he quickly picked up what was described as a hip injury, spending much of his 16 minutes on the field hobbling and receiving further treatment at full time.

The extent of the problem is unclear, but Gordon reportedly withdrew from the England squad for Monday's game with Latvia and returned to Tyneside.

Howe's hoppings:
Town Moor -
registration closed

Update: NUFC confirm that access to the Moor will be from 1.30pm on Saturday and the event will end at 8pm.

Alcohol won't be allowed, no parking will be provided and it's standing only - no seating (an area accommodating wheelchairs will be set aside but must be pre-booked).

Whether there will be anything further on the day than this stage-managed event - with the players presented to the crowd from a stage - is unclear. How the squad will arrive on the Moor is also yet to be confirmed.

From NUFC, Friday:

Newcastle United will celebrate the club’s historic Carabao Cup Final victory with a free open-air event on Saturday 29th March.

Supporters will get the chance to see Eddie Howe and the first team players with the cup for the first time since last Sunday’s famous win at Wembley.

Set around a large main stage on the Town Moor, adjacent to the Great North Road, the open-air event will be free to attend. Supporters are asked to register their interest to assist with planning.

It will feature a DJ, live band, ‘Road to Wembley’ highlights, a screening of the full cup final and special guests.

The team will then proudly lift the Carabao Cup on stage – presenting the club’s first domestic trophy for 70 years to the city.

The celebrations will close with a spectacular show from club partner Sela and further event details will be published ahead of the show.

Registering your interest does not guarantee you access to the event. Further details will follow to those that register their interest with the club.

Premier League:
Albion date awaited

Hopes that the Premier League would stick to their own published timetable and confirm TV rescheduling for matchweek 35 last Friday proved to be misplaced.

That leaves Newcastle fans left hanging on to finalise travel plans for the visit to Brighton & Hove Albion on the early May Bank Holiday Weekend of May 5th.

For once, there are no scheduled rail engineering works directly impacting travellers from the North East over that weekend.

Pre-season rumours

Following recent claims of a possible pre-season visit to Hong Kong by Newcastle United, the Straits Times has written that the Magpies are one of several clubs in talks to play games in Singapore this July.

The newspaper also names Arsenal and AC Milan plus one further unidentified club as possible participants in kickabouts at the 55,000 capacity National Stadium.

Asian media reports earlier this year also linked Arsenal and AC Milan (plus Spurs) with pre-season games played in the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.

Talk of a pre-season visit to Celtic on July 19th for Eddie Howe's side has done the rounds for some time now.

ST price rise confirmed

NUFC have announced 2025/26 season ticket prices and while some other PL clubs have frozen their charges, a 5% increase on standard adult prices will apply at SJP - hardly a shock given current PSR pressures, but a further unwanted drain on resources for supporters.

Season ticket holders who were on the long-term price freeze deals that have all now expired will see 2025/26 ticket prices increase to the standard pricing level.

As an example, adult 1892 Club tickets will increase from £635 (£33.42 per game) to £1,083 (£57 per game).

There's no increase in junior ticket prices again and the current range of concessionary prices will continue to be offered - that's in contrast to several other PL clubs who have axed price categories such as Young Persons.

A new 12 month interest-free direct debit schedule will appear in place of the previous eight month option.

ST holders currently paying via Direct Debit will be contacted by email to confirm payment details and auto-renewal will apply.

Other ST holders can renew their seats online via the club website until Fri 21.03.2025 @ 5pm.

2024/25:
Brentford (h)

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Wednesday April 2nd, when Thomas Frank brings his Bees to Gallowgate for a non-televised 7.45pm start.

This will be only the eighth time that the two clubs have met in top-flight competition, United winning five and drawing one of the first six before Brentford notched up their maiden success in West London last December.

Results from PL games played while Newcastle were at Wembley left Eddie Howe's side sixth in the table on 47 points, with Brentford six points and five places behind that having played a game more.

Team: Anthony Gordon will serve the third and final game of his suspension, while Sven Botman and Lewis Hall remain sidelined following surgery.

Injury victim Jamaal Lascelles is nearing a return to the squad a year after his most recent appearance.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/6
The draw 10/3
BFC win 12/5

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

BFC: Fabio Carvalho remains out but Michael Kayode, Mathias Jensen, Igor Thiago, Josh Dasilva and Aaron Hickey could all return.

Since a 1-2 loss at Chelsea last December, Brentford are unbeaten on the road in the PL: a 0-0 draw at Brighton followed by wins at Southampton (5-0), Palace (2-1), West Ham (1-0), Leicester (4-0) and Bournemouth (2-1).

On This Day in History
23rd March

Born Or Died:

1884 George Alexander Thompson born, South Shields (1910-11)

Right winger who began his career in local football on both sides of the Tyne before moving from North Shields to Sheffield United in October 1906.

Signing for Derby County two years later (where he was known as Alec), Thompson briefly joined Newcastle in 1911 but failed to make his senior competitive bow.

Later working as an unlicensed bookmaker in North Shields (with convictions for related offences in 1911 and 1912), he continued to play local football in South Shields.

Recorded as playing for Crewe Alexandra in 1914, George guested in a wartime game for Newcastle during 1918. He had a brief spell as Luton Town boss in 1925.

Thompson's death was recorded in his hometown of South Shields during 1950.

1911 Joe Wilson
born, High Spen, Durham.
(1933-36)

Inside right recruited from local football, who marked his Newcastle debut with a goal in a 6-2 home victory over Hull City on Christmas Day 1934.

Joining Brighton and Hove Albion for £450 in May 1936, Joe stayed at the Goldstone Ground for the rest of his working life.

Appearing for the Seagulls during the war with guest outings for Aldershot, Reading and Spurs, Wilson also served as an army physical training instructor.

Playing on until 1947, Joe subsequently acted as Brighton trainer, caretaker boss and chief scout - with a testimonial match played in his honour in November 1961.

Joe's death was recorded in 1984 - ten years after his retirement.

1930 Len White born, Skellow, Yorkshire.
(1953-62)

Newcastle’s failure to appear in a third successive FA Cup Final in 1953 had one silver lining, with the signing of Len White just days after he had inspired the Millers to a 3-1 Fourth Round victory at Gallowgate.

The 22 year-old Yorkshireman cost £12,500 and spent the early part of his career in a black and white shirt operating on the right flank, while still working at Burradon Colliery.

However White’s reputation as one of the best uncapped players of the era was built on performances for Newcastle at centre forward after the departures of Jackie Milburn and Vic Keeble.

A run of stylish free-scoring displays made White a genuine crowd favourite, although inconsistency elsewhere in the side often meant that his efforts were nullified by defensive lapses.

White’s sole honour was to be a 1955 FA Cup Winner’s medal – a game in which he delivered the corner for Jackie Milburn to head home in the opening seconds.

Untimely cup exits at the hands of the likes of Millwall and Scunthorpe United were to follow in subsequent seasons though, while his haul of 22 goals in 30 league games was enough only to see the club narrowly avoid relegation in 1958.

Had White played for a London club an England call-up would have been likely. As it was though, his appearance for a Football League XI in November 1958 gave a hint of what his country missed.

Playing against an Irish League side at Anfield, White scored three goals in eight second half minutes during a 5-2 victory.

However like Tony Green a decade later, injury would overshadow White’s career.

A challenge by Tottenham’s Dave Mackay at White Hart Lane in March 1961 took the gloss off a 2-1 victory against the team who would complete a League and Cup double within weeks.

Sidelined for six months with ruptured ankle ligaments, by the time White returned to the Magpies line-up they were in Division Two and manager Charlie Mitten was about to be jettisoned, as his side struggled to mount a promotion bid.

It was evident that the injury had robbed White of pace and with early 1962 seeing Newcastle languishing in eighteenth and on a run of one win in twelve games and bundled out of the FA Cup by Peterborough, changes were inevitable.

A deal was struck with Huddersfield Town to sign their Scottish forward Jimmy Kerray in February of that year, White returning to his native Yorkshire as part of the transfer and the Terriers also receiving £10,000.

Belatedly rewarded for his efforts for the club with a testimonial in 1989 (held at Whitley Bay after Newcastle scandalously refused to take part), Len passed away in June 1994, a victim of cancer.

November 2024 saw Len finally inducted into the club's hall of fame during the annual Foundation Dinner at SJP.

1938 Ken Wimshurst born, South Shields (1957-58)

Midfielder who played for his hometown club South Shields before joining United in 1957.

Appearing at reserve level, Ken moved over the Tyne to Gateshead a year later and was also on the books at Wolves for a time.

Signing for Southampton in 1961, Wimshurst enjoyed six seasons at The Dell before a £15,000 switch to Bristol City.

Remaining on the coaching staff at Ashton Gate following his playing retirement in 1972, Ken finally left in 1981 and subsequently held backroom posts at Dundee and Southampton.

1993 Andy Mogwo born, Congo.
(2009-11)

Well-built defensive midfielder who joined United from Montague Boys club and made a competitive debut for the club's U18s against Watford in August 2009.

Andy's first reserve runout came against Bedlington Terriers in a Northumberland Senior Cup victory in February 2011 and within weeks he'd scored his first goal - for our U18s against Wolves.

Released at the end of the season, an unsuccessful trial at West Bromwich Albion was followed by stints at Seaton Delaval Amateurs, West Allotment Celtic, West Auckland, Ponteland United and Blyth Spartans (trial).

Signing for Lewes after his former Magpies colleague Kazenga LuaLua moved to nearby Brighton, Andy later had a trial with Conference side Bishops Stortford.

Returning to the North East, he appeared for Bedlington Terriers, Durham City, Crook Town and Bishop Auckland, avoiding a prison term for assault when handed a suspended sentence in 2014.

Following a spell in Holland with FC Breukelen, Mogwo returned to Durham City and also played for Washington, Jesmond, Forest Hall, Seaton Delaval, Newcastle Independent, Newcastle Blue Star and West Auckland Town amongst others.

1993 Curtis Good born, Melbourne, Australia. (2012-18)

Defender signed for an undisclosed fee from Australian side Melbourne Heart in the summer of 2012, following trial.

Australian youth international, Curtis had caught the eye during his maiden season in the A-League soccer, debuting for United in a pre-season reserve team friendly at Gateshead.

Marking his competitive U21 bow with a goal in a 6-4 home win over Spurs, Good was loaned out to League Two side Bradford City in November 2012.

Nine games for The Bantams (eight starts) saw Curtis feature in four different competitions (League Two, Football League Trophy, FA Cup and League Cup)

Watched by Alan Pardew as he helped City eliminate Aston Villa en route to the League Cup Final, a 45 minute outing at Wembley against victors Swansea City left him with a runners-up medal.

Back with Newcastle reserves, a first team bow came in a 2-0 League Cup success at Morecambe in August 2013.

Returning from injury, late January 2014 saw Good loaned to SPFL side Dundee United, netting a first senior goal against Kilmarnock in his third outing.

Curtis became the fourth Magpie of the PL era to gain a full cap for Australia in March 2014, featuring in a 3-4 friendly loss to Ecuador at Millwall's New Den.

Sadly though a hip injury in that game curtailed his time on Tayside, that same injury restricting him to just two U21 starts for Newcastle the next season.

February 2015 found Good at the Colorado clinic of surgeon Richard Steadman, following Alan Shearer, Craig Bellamy and Shola Ameobi by going under the knife to save his playing career.

Following 45 minutes against Gateshead in pre-season though, Curtis found himself sidelined yet again - injured while training in the USA on Newcastle's tour.

Returning to U21 action in March 2016, Good's second senior outing for Newcastle came almost three and a half years after the first - in an awful 0-3 FA Cup loss at Oxford United in January 2017.

Training with Dutch side PEC Zwolle that July, Curtis went on trial at League One Blackpool the following summer after his Magpies contract finally expired.

Nothing materialised though and he went back to Australia, joining Melbourne City in September 2018 and finally achieving the match fitness that had long eluded him.

June 2021 brought a belated second full cap for Australia against Taiwan - over seven years after his maiden selection.

Good's time at Melbourne ended in 2024 when he moved on to Buriram United in Thailand.

Returning to the side after missing the 1-2 loss at Huddersfield Town, Hughie Gallacher netted the spot kick but moved to the wing at half time due to injury.

Winger Tom Urwin replaced him at centre forward and almost immediately found the net, later sending over the corner that Tommy Lang headed home for 3-0.

Gallacher then netted his side's second penalty of the game after Urwin was fouled by ex-mackem Bobby Marshall.

Joe Waters then levelled late on, although the crucial touch that took his shot beyond Iam McFaul was off defender Bob Moncur.

The Foxes were responsible for a bizarre finale when substitute Steve Yates came on to replace the injured Dennis Rofe - only for Rofe to spring to his feet and attempt to continue.

Kevin Keegan's Magpies maintained their five point cushion at the top of the second tier, but a second successive away defeat left their manager and 4,000 travelling supporters frustrated.

The only goal of the game was a scrappy effort from Paul Furlong, after mackem Gary Porter's free kick led to a scramble in Pavel Srnicek's area.

Wearside-born Hornets 'keeper Keith Waugh made a rare start and pulled off a series of good saves, twice denying Andy Cole in only his third game for United.

And when Waugh was beaten by Rob Lee's shot in the final seconds,  Barry Ashby was on the line to hack the ball clear.

The highlight of a poor game at Selhurst Park was a fine Tino Asprilla free kick to earn a point against Joe Kinnear's Wombles.

1998 In the wake of a second Sunday of News of the World allegations about them, Freddy Shepherd "resigned" as Chairman and Douglas Hall as a director of the club, while still maintaining their controlling interest. In other words, the resignations were just a sham, aimed at placating the masses....
