Update:
On the buses

Statement from NUFC, Monday:

Newcastle United can confirm an open-top bus parade will form part of the club's Carabao Cup Winners Events at the Town Moor on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side will celebrate their recent cup win with a city centre open top bus on Saturday 29 March, which will start at St. James’ Park, before making its way to the Town Moor for the celebration event.

Extensive work and long-term planning behind the scenes have continued with Newcastle City Council, Northumbria Police, Freemen of Newcastle, the North East Combined Authority, NE1, Nexus and the emergency services.

Newcastle United would like to thank all partners for the comprehensive planning and hard work throughout the process, as well as the meetings with the Safety Advisory Group. Further supporter information will be confirmed following additional meetings this week.

Ticketing: The club received unprecedented interest from supporters wishing to attend the event on the Town Moor. Every fan that registered an interest in the event will receive a ticket via email.

Route of Celebration & Timings: The bus route is open to the general public to attend. The open top bus will leave St. James’ Park with timings to be shared in advance.

The bus will make its way down Gallowgate, turning onto Percy Street before heading onto the B1318 towards Gosforth. The bus will stop at the Town Moor where the players will make their way onto the stage.

The full bus route will be shown live on large screens at the Town Moor event.

Transport & Travel: Supporters are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and are advised to use public transport where possible. A number of road closures will be in operation on Saturday 29 March, on the following roads: (timings of closures to follow)

Barrack Road (from St. James’ Park to Gallowgate)
Gallowgate
Percy Street
B1318 (to Great North Road)
Great North Road

Statement from Newcastle City Council leader, Karen Kilgour, Monday:

"Like all supporters, at the council we’re keen to celebrate this historic occasion and we’ve been working closely with the club, the emergency services, the Freemen and other partners to support their plans in any way we can.

"Our teams have guided and advised in any way they’ve been able, we haven’t blocked the holding of a parade, and we’ve been doing our upmost to facilitate the plans the club have presented.

"The anticipated crowds for Saturday’s celebration, to mark the end of a 70-year wait for domestic silverware, are expected to make it among the biggest events ever held in the city. The safety of those attending and the local communities and businesses affected by this must be the priority of all partners involved.

"The widespread impact needs to be thoroughly assessed to ensure that it can go ahead safely but it is wrong to suggest we have said "no" to a parade through our beloved city.

"Our teams will continue to liaise with the club and other partners to make this the best celebration it can possibly be to recognise the magnitude of the club's success and, just as importantly, what it means to our city and residents.

"We're all keen to see a spectacular event that is free and accessible to everybody who wishes to be part of this moment in history and we look forward to working with partners to see further details announced as soon as they can be.

"As a lifelong fan I remember the parades through the city centre when we didn't even lift a trophy. They were special memories and I want children and families in this city to have that same experience on an even bigger and better scale."

NUFC confirm that access to the Moor will open at 1.30pm and the event will end at 8pm. Alcohol won't be allowed, there's no parking and it's standing only.

A club record home attendance of 38,502 for Newcastle United Women were at Gallowgate on Sunday, as they completed a seasonal double over the mackems.

Update:
Gordon injury concern

Ruled out of Newcastle's next game as he completes a three match club suspension, Anthony Gordon got some pitch time for England in the closing stages of Friday's 2-0 home victory over Albania.

However he quickly picked up what was described as a hip injury, spending much of his 16 minutes on the field hobbling and receiving further treatment at full time.

The extent of the problem is unclear, but Gordon reportedly withdrew from the England squad for Monday's game with Latvia and returned to Tyneside.

Premier League:
Albion date awaited

Hopes that the Premier League would stick to their own published timetable and confirm TV rescheduling for matchweek 35 last Friday proved to be misplaced.

That leaves Newcastle fans left hanging on to finalise travel plans for the visit to Brighton & Hove Albion on the early May Bank Holiday Weekend of May 5th.

For once, there are no scheduled rail engineering works directly impacting travellers from the North East over that weekend.

Stiffs switch

A new date has been announced for the final PL2 game of the season for Newcastle U21s, who will now face Manchester City at the Joie Stadium on Monday April 14th (7pm) rather than Friday 11th as advertised.

With three games remaining, Diarmuid O'Carroll's side sit thirteenth in the table, having won their last two PL2 fixtures against Stoke City and Boro.

A top 16 finish ensures qualification for the knockout phase of the league and a place in next season's U21 Premier League International Cup competition*.

* some sources claim that a top 12 finish would be required for next season's International Cup.

2025/26:
Pre-season rumours

Following recent claims of a possible pre-season visit to Hong Kong by Newcastle United, the Straits Times has written that the Magpies are one of several clubs in talks to play games in Singapore this July.

The newspaper also names Arsenal and AC Milan plus one further unidentified club as possible participants in kickabouts at the 55,000 capacity National Stadium.

Asian media reports earlier this year also linked Arsenal and AC Milan (plus Spurs) with pre-season games played in the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.

Talk of a pre-season visit to Celtic on July 19th for Eddie Howe's side has done the rounds for some time now.

2024/25:
Brentford (h)

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Wednesday April 2nd, when Thomas Frank brings his Bees to Gallowgate for a non-televised 7.45pm start.

This will be only the eighth time that the two clubs have met in top-flight competition, United winning five and drawing one of the first six before Brentford notched up their maiden success in West London last December.

Results from PL games played while Newcastle were at Wembley left Eddie Howe's side sixth in the table on 47 points, with Brentford six points and five places behind that having played a game more.

Team: Anthony Gordon will serve the third and final game of his suspension, while Sven Botman and Lewis Hall remain sidelined following surgery.

Injury victim Jamaal Lascelles is nearing a return to the squad a year after his most recent appearance.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/6
The draw 10/3
BFC win 12/5

On This Day in History
24th March

Born Or Died:

1953 Jim Pearson born, Falkirk, Scotland.
(1978-80)

Forever famed for that spot kick miss (at home to the mackems in a shootout to decide a 1979 League Cup tie), Jim's time in Toon was blighted by knee injuries.

Beginning his career with St.Johnstone, striker Pearson spent four years at Everton before being signed by Bill McGarry - with midfielder John Connolly following him to the same trio of clubs.

After his retirement, Jim began a long association with US sports company Nike, helping establish the brand in the UK.

He then coached in Brunei before returning to help get the JJB Football Centres off the ground and scouting on behalf of former side Everton.

Along with fellow former Magpie John Hendrie, Jim was now a sports law consultant to Last Cawthra Feather solicitors in Bradford and also a brand manager with Lotto.

1955 Ray Hudson born, Dunston.
(1973-78)

The 29 appearances and four goals that "Rocky" managed for Newcastle are perhaps the least noteworthy part of a footballing career predominantly spent in the USA.

A loan stint with Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1977 led to a permanent move the following year (via a brief spell at Brighton and German side Union Solingen) Hudson staying with the side when their franchise relocated to Minnesota, still named the Strikers.

Persuaded to take up coaching with the Miami Fusion, Hudson enjoyed success and a high-profile image in US soccer circles that brought him work as a TV pundit.

A further coaching stint then saw him link up with Washington-based DC United, although they parted company in 2004.

Based in Fort Lauderdale, Rocky continued with his language-mangling antics on both radio and TV stateside - admitting a debt to the patter of Northumbrian darts burbler, the late Sid Waddell.

1996 Valentino Lazaro
born, Graz, Austria. (2020)

United's first Austrian-born player arrived in January 2020 on a half season loan from Inter Milan, with a purchase option.

Debuting from the bench in a 0-0 home draw with Norwich City that February, Valentino's third appearance ended with a red card away at Crystal Palace.

Returning from suspension to score the winner in an FA Cup Fifth Round tie at West Bromwich Albion,  he also netted in the 4-1 win at Bournemouth in the Premier League in July when the season resumed after the COVID shutdown.

Returning to Italy, Lazaro's career then continued with loan moves to Borussia Monchengladbach (2020/21), Benfica (2021/22) and Torino (2022/23).

He finally left Inter in the summer of 2023 when Torino converted his loan to a permanent deal for a claimed €4M.

Lazaro had begun his career at Red Bull Salzburg and following a spell in Germany with Hertha Berlin joined Inter at a cost of £19m in the summer of 2019.

Predominantly a right-sided wing-back or winger, he featured on the opposite wing during his limited outings for Inter but failed to convince coach Antonio Conte of his worth to their squad.

First capped internationally at U16 level, Valentino made his senior bow against Iceland during May 2014.
