Premier League:
Sussex Sunday

The Premier League have belatedly confirmed which games will be rescheduled for UK live TV transmission during the early May Bank Holiday weekend.

That includes Newcastle's visit to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion, which will be a 2pm kick-off on Sunday May 4th, live on Sky Sports.

For once, there are no scheduled rail engineering works directly impacting travellers from the North East.

Sky Sports have also confirmed their live coverage of United's PL home game versus Crystal Palace, although the date and kick-off time of that - Wednesday April 16th at 7.30pm - remain unchanged.

PS: According to the PL's own press release, live TV selections for the weekend of May 10th are due to be announced by this Friday. Newcastle host Chelsea that weekend.

Match report

U21s:
Stiff switches

New details have been announced for Newcastle's closing two PL2 games of the season, with one venue change and one date alteration as follows:

The final home game of the season against Reading will go ahead as planned on Monday April 7th (7pm), but will now be staged at St.James' Park.

It remains to be seen what level of interest there is from home fans, given that the first team are in action at Leicester City live on Sky the same night (8pm).

However with the U21s exiting from the Northumberland Senior Cup exit at the semi-final stage, moving this game means they'll get to play at the main ground after all, following a season of home matches at Whitley Park.

The U21s will now face Manchester City at the Joie Stadium on Monday April 14th (7pm) rather than Friday 11th as previously advertised.

With three games remaining, Diarmuid O'Carroll's side sit thirteenth in the table, having won their last two PL2 fixtures against Stoke City and Boro.

A top 16 finish ensures qualification for the knockout phase of the league and a place in next season's U21 Premier League International Cup competition*.

* some sources claim that a top 12 finish would be required for next season's International Cup.

2024/25:
Brentford (h)

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Wednesday April 2nd, when Thomas Frank brings his Bees to Gallowgate for a non-televised 7.45pm start.

This will be only the eighth time that the two clubs have met in top-flight competition, United winning five and drawing one of the first six before Brentford notched up their maiden success in West London last December.

Results from PL games played while Newcastle were at Wembley left Eddie Howe's side sixth in the table on 47 points, with Brentford six points and five places behind that having played a game more.

Team: Anthony Gordon will serve the third and final game of his suspension, while Sven Botman and Lewis Hall remain sidelined following surgery.

Injury victim Jamaal Lascelles is nearing a return to the squad a year after his most recent appearance.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/6
The draw 10/3
BFC win 12/5

Referee:

Pre-season rumours

Following recent claims of a possible pre-season visit to Hong Kong by Newcastle United, the Straits Times has written that the Magpies are one of several clubs in talks to play games in Singapore this July.

The newspaper also names Arsenal and AC Milan plus one further unidentified club as possible participants in kickabouts at the 55,000 capacity National Stadium.

Asian media reports earlier this year also linked Arsenal and AC Milan (plus Spurs) with pre-season games played in the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.

Talk of a pre-season visit to Celtic on July 19th for Eddie Howe's side has done the rounds for some time now.

Born Or Died:

1912 Harry McMenemy born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1931-37)

Inside left who joined United for £475 from Strathclyde Juniors ahead of the 1931/32 season.

Earmarked as a promising youngster, Harry was swiftly elevated to the Newcastle first team and made his debut in a 2-1 win at Grimsby Town in September 1931.

Winning the FA Cup in his first season at SJP, McMenemy received a Scotland callup in October 1933 and looked set to emulate his father, a former international.

However, Harry had to withdraw through injury and his brother John (a Motherwell player) was selected instead to face Wales at Cardiff's Ninian Park.

McMenemy moved to Scotland with Dundee ahead of the 1937/38 season, later playing for St. Mirren, Gateshead, York City and Halifax Town in wartime football.

Twice wounded at Arnhem in 1944, Harry returned to England and successfully recovered from his injuries.

He later lived and worked on Clydeside until his death in Glasgow during June 1997.

It proved to be eighth time lucky for United in winning a game at Gigg Lane, having lost 2-1 there in the FA Cup the previous month.

The Shakers gave "a wretched exhibition", according to one contemporary observer.

Just 24 hours after a 1-1 home draw with Arsenal in Division One, United were in FA Cup Semi Final action at White Hart Lane.

Facing Southern League Swindon for the first time ever, contemporary newspaper reports claim that a contingent of fans from Wiltshire "were clad in white smock-frocks and armed with rakes and other agricultural implements."

The lure of an FA Cup Semi-Final between Cardiff City and Reading at Molineux may have affected the Hawthorns crowd, but those who stayed away missed an eventful game.

Magpies forward Hughie Gallacher had the ball in the Albion net three times in quick succession during the first half - the second strike allowed despite fierce offside claims, but the other two refused for the same reason.

Despite this setback, Newcastle went on to collect the First Division title, while Albion finished bottom and were relegated.

United ended a barren away spell with a first win in seven, thanks to some Terriers help at Leeds Road.

First, Durham-born defender George Hepplewhite put the visitors ahead when he smashed a centre from George Robledo into his own goal.

Town's Henry Stewart then beat his goalkeeper to Bobby Mitchell's through ball, but succeeded only in poking it into the unguarded net.

Newcastle's previous victory away from SJP had come at Arsenal - also via an own goal.

"United Fight Again"
was the "Evening Chronicle Football Edition" headline after this Hillsborough stalemate.

Future Magpie Arthur Bottom equalised for the Minstermen from Division Three North after Vic Keeble put the Magpies ahead.

The second half saw no further scoring as York overwhelmed United but couldn't find a winner, although it was claimed that a late Bottom effort had crept in.

Even the presence of the 80 year old Archbishop of York - at his first game for 50 years - couldn't invoke Divine intervention.

After a 5-1 snow-affected success at SJP, United survived a bruising encounter in the second leg to qualify for the semi-finals.

Even the presence of pitchside clowns, bands and a motorcyclist who raced round the perimeter brandishing a Setubal flag during the game failed to deter the Magpies.

As Setubal's ground was being rebuilt and had no floodlights, the tie went ahead at Lisbon's Jose Alvalade Stadium - scene of United's 1-1 Second Round draw with Sporting.

Cooper's forgettable afternoon was then concluded midway through the second half, following bookings for fouls on Nattrass and Cassidy within 60 seconds.

In addition to future boss Charlton, the visitors included David Mills, John Craggs, Stuart Boam and Graeme Souness -  all of whom subsequently moved to SJP.
