Parade:

Silverware
celebrated

Tens of thousands of fans brought Newcastle city centre to a standstill on Saturday afternoon, as Eddie Howe, staff and players showed off the Carabao Cup.

Two open top buses left SJP at 4.30pm, nudging their way through celebrating crowds on Barrack Road, Gallowgate, Percy Street, Haymarket and the Great North Road before arriving at the Town Moor.

The squad disembarked to be met by further crowds surrounding a specially erected stage, where former players including Bob Moncur, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer had preceded them.

Ant & Dec (who had joined the players on the bus from SJP) introduced Howe & Co. to the acclaim of the fans, before Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles and Bruno Guimaraes recreated their Wembley trophy lift.

Howe took to the microphone to express his thanks to those who attended and introduce club backroom staff individually along with CEO Darren Eales.

A group photo was then taken with the Town Moor crowd providing the backdrop before the event concluded with a drone show presented by club sponsor Sela in the gathering gloom.

BBC coverage of the day is online here

PS: The attendance was estimated at 300K, equally split between the parade and moor. In reality, some fans saw the former then headed to the latter but there was still an enormous turnout - the manager and his players looking genuinely staggered by what unfolded before their eyes.

U18s:

Robert ruins record

Newcastle U18s  1  Everton U18s  2

Coming into Saturday's home game on the back of a four game winning run, Newcastle U18s fell behind after just 44 seconds when Everton's Harvey Fraser fired home.

The visitors then came close to doubling their lead within seconds, only a vital clearance inside the six yard box denying Adelaide Akirkin.

To complete a frantic start, Magpies goalkeeper Will Anderson was unable to continue after sustaining a leg injury on seven minutes and was eventually stretchered off to be replaced by Tyler Jones.

The substitute was then beaten in first half added time when Fraser's corner kick from the Everton right was headed home unopposed by Ray Robert.

Playing with the wind in the second period the Magpies charged upfield, Joe Brayson miskicking when well placed in front of goal.

United did reduce the arrears when Aaron Epia looped a 61st minute header over Seve Patrick in the Toffees net, but no equaliser followed despite heavy pressure and an additional seven minutes of added time.

Team: Anderson (Jones 7), Bloomer (Tika-Lemba 81), Cogdon, Johnson, Epia (Durrant 67), Taylor, Fitzgerald, Harper (Alabi 81), Wooster, Brayson (O'Donovan 81), Ferreira.

Booked: Cogdon, Alabi, Ferreira

Away win:
Good(ison) Friday

Now just weeks away from leaving Goodison Park, the Everton Heritage Society have uncovered extended footage of a Newcastle victory at the Toffees almost exactly 70 years ago online here

60,068 fans were on the blue side of Stanley Park to see Newcastle win 2-1 on Good Friday 1955 thanks to goals from George Hannah and Vic Keeble.

Newcastle went ahead when ex-Toffees amateur George Hannah shot home following a Len White corner kick in the 17th minute (11.37 on the video).

Everton soon levelled through Wally Fielding (15.50), but the Magpies collected both points when Liverpool-born Hannah centred for Keeble to head in from point-blank range in the 75th minute (49.55).

That was enough to end United's five game winless league run in Division One and just a month later, they lifted the FA Cup at Wembley.

Premier League:

Sussex Sunday

The Premier League have belatedly confirmed which games will be rescheduled for UK live TV transmission during the early May Bank Holiday weekend.

That includes Newcastle's visit to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion, which will be a 2pm kick-off on Sunday May 4th, live on Sky Sports.

For once, there are no scheduled rail engineering works directly impacting travellers from the North East.

Sky Sports have also confirmed their live coverage of United's PL home game versus Crystal Palace, although the date and kick-off time of that - Wednesday April 16th at 7.30pm - remain unchanged.

PS: According to the PL's own press release, live TV selections for the weekend of May 10th should be announced today (Friday). They weren't.

Newcastle host Chelsea that weekend.

2024/25:

Brentford (h)

The Magpies return to Premier League action on Wednesday, when Thomas Frank brings his Bees to Gallowgate for a non-televised 7.45pm start.

This will be only the eighth time that the two clubs have met in top-flight competition, United winning five and drawing one of the first six before Brentford notched up their maiden success in West London last December.

Results from PL games played while Newcastle were at Wembley left Eddie Howe's side sixth in the table on 47 points, with Brentford six points and five places behind that having played a game more.

Team: Anthony Gordon will serve the third and final game of his suspension, while Sven Botman and Lewis Hall remain sidelined following surgery.

Injury victim Jamaal Lascelles is nearing a return to the squad a year after his most recent appearance.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/6
The draw 10/3
BFC win 12/5

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

BFC: Fabio Carvalho remains out but Michael Kayode, Mathias Jensen, Igor Thiago, Josh Dasilva and Aaron Hickey could all return.

Since a 1-2 loss at Chelsea last December, Brentford are unbeaten on the road in the PL: a 0-0 draw at Brighton followed by wins at Southampton (5-0), Crystal Palace (2-1), West Ham (1-0), Leicester City (4-0) and Bournemouth (2-1).

Referee:
Peter Bankes - third Toon posting of the season for the Lancastrian official, afterr the 1-3 PL loss at Fulham and 0-1 PL home defeat by Brighton.

Brentford have also lost both of the games Bankes has taken charge of this time round.

Match report

U21s:
Stiff switches

New details have been announced for Newcastle's closing two PL2 games of the season, with one venue change and one date alteration as follows:

The final home game of the season against Reading will go ahead as planned on Monday April 7th (7pm), but will now be staged at St.James' Park.

It remains to be seen what level of interest there is from home fans, given that the first team are in action at Leicester City live on Sky the same night (8pm).

However with the U21s exiting from the Northumberland Senior Cup exit at the semi-final stage, moving this game means they'll get to play at the main ground after all, following a season of home matches at Whitley Park.

The U21s will now face Manchester City at the Joie Stadium on Monday April 14th (7pm) rather than Friday 11th as previously advertised.

With three games remaining, Diarmuid O'Carroll's side sit thirteenth in the table, having won their last two PL2 fixtures against Stoke City and Boro.

A top 16 finish ensures qualification for the knockout phase of the league and a place in next season's U21 Premier League International Cup competition*.

* some sources claim that a top 12 finish would be required for next season's International Cup.

2025/26:
Pre-season rumours

Following recent claims of a possible pre-season visit to Hong Kong by Newcastle United, the Straits Times has written that the Magpies are one of several clubs in talks to play games in Singapore this July.

The newspaper also names Arsenal and AC Milan plus one further unidentified club as possible participants in kickabouts at the 55,000 capacity National Stadium.

Asian media reports earlier this year also linked Arsenal and AC Milan (plus Spurs) with pre-season games played in the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.

Talk of a pre-season visit to Celtic on July 19th for Eddie Howe's side has done the rounds for some time now.

NSC:
Senior Cup @ SJP

exas test for Toon

Newcastle begin their U19 Dallas Cup campaign against reigning Super Group champions Sao Paulo, facing the Brazilians in the Cotton Bowl on Sunday April 13th.

The Magpies then face Austin-based Lonestar Soccer Club the following day at Richland College, completing their Group stage games on Wednesday April 16th against Mexicans Tigres at the Toyota Soccer Centre.

The 12 team U19 segment of the tournament then moves to a knockout format, concluding on April 20th.

The original Cotton Bowl Stadium opened in 1930 and had a maximum capacity of 75,000. It hosted six matches during the 1994 World Cup Finals.

On This Day in History
29th March

Born Or Died:

1957 Ian Davies born, Nailsea, Bristol. (1979-82)

Left-back signed from Norwich City for £175K in 1979, having begun his career at Clevedon Juniors - a feeder club for the Canaries in the South West of England.

Representing Somerset at cricket during his teenage years, Davies opted for football and was recruited to try and stiffen our defence, along with Middlesbrough's Stuart Boam.

Almost an ever-present under Bill McGarry, Davies saw off the challenge of new signing Peter Johnson to keep the number 3 shirt when Arthur Cox took charge.

However, he subsequently lost out to Wes Saunders and was allowed to move on from Gallowgate to Manchester City, just before the first arrival of Kevin Keegan.

After just seven appearances at Maine Road though, Davies was shipped out on loan to Bury, Brentford and Cambridge United.

A permanent move to Carlisle United came in 1984, followed by stints with Exeter City, Yeovil Town, Bristol Rovers and Swansea City - the latter move reuniting him with boss John Bond, who had given him his league debut at Carrow Road and later took him to Manchester City.

However, Ian's career ended prematurely at the age of 30 while at the Vetch, sustaining a badly broken leg at Doncaster Rovers.

A former Welsh U21 international, Davies had a subsequent spell with Gloucester City and later worked as a lorry driver.

1957 Death of Tom Mather, 68.
Former manager. (1935-39)

Tom is renowned in the Potteries as the man who spotted a 14 year-old Stanley Matthews and signed for Stoke City on his fifteenth birthday, allowing him to train with the players while earning £1 a week working in the offices at the Victoria Ground.

It has been claimed that Mather tried to entice Matthews to join him on Tyneside.

1968 Amilcar Ivanovic born, Buenos Aires, Argentina. (1994)

Midfielder who joined United on trial during March 1994 from Velez Sarsfield in his native Argentina.

Beginning his career with Atletico Platense, Ivanovic also played for Sarsfield and Racing Club.

Failing to win a deal on Tyneside, he was similarly unsuccessful at Bundesliga side Cologne and joined Newell's Old Boys upon returning to Argentina.

Moving on to All Boys in Buenos Aires, Amilcar reportedly visited England for a fruitless trial at Stoke City during 1996.

Later coaching clubs in Argentina and Paraguay, 2018 found him as a Technical Director of Spanish side UD Levante.

1969 Steve Guppy born, Winchester.
(1994)

Bouncing back from the disappointment of failing to make a first team appearance during his time as a young professional at Southampton, winger Guppy moved on to Wycombe Wanderers, managed by an up and coming Martin O'Neill.

Helping the Chairboys to FA Trophy success and the Conference League title in 1993, Guppy was an ever-present as Wycombe gained a second successive promotion before Newcastle successfully bid £150K for him in July 1994.

After an encouraging start when appearing in the pre-season tournament at Ibrox just days later however, Guppy found himself unable to break into the first team.

His sole competitive appearance in our colours came as substitute in a 2-0 home League Cup win over Manchester United in late October, our seventeenth game in all competitions without defeat.

Frustrated at his inactivity, Guppy made a permanent switch to second tier Port Vale during November 1994 and played over a century of games for the Valiants.

His former boss Martin O'Neill then came calling in March 1997, his Leicester City side paying £850K for him.

A belated top-flight debut came weeks before his 28th birthday and Kevin Keegan awarded him one England cap in October 1999, against Belgium at the mackems.

Following O'Neill to Celtic in August 2001, Guppy later appeared for Leicester again, Leeds United, Stoke City and Wycombe again before a 2005 switch to the USA, with MLS side DC United.

A return to the UK came a year later with Conference side Stevenage Borough, Guppy won an FA Trophy medal and by 2007 was training with Aston Villa at the invitation of Martin O'Neill while he sought a new club.

Back in the USA in a player/coach role with Rochester Rhinos, Guppy hung up his boots at the age of 39 and joined the coaching staff at Colorado Rapids.

A further reunion with O'Neill followed in March 2012, with a part-time coaching role at the mackems. Just over a year later though, Steve lost his job following the arrival of Paolo Di Canio.

The appointment of O'Neill as joint boss of Ireland later that year then inevitably saw Guppy appear on his backroom staff again.

O'Neill was relieved of his position in November 2018 and was then appointed manager of Nottingham Forest with Guppy again on the coaching staff.

However, the duo exited from the City Ground during June 2019, Guppy returning for another stint in the USA - this time at MLS newcomers Nashville SC.

Rescheduled to a Monday due to FA Cup commitments, Newcastle's visit to Anfield was described as "curiously uneven" in the view of The Journal reporter.

Both sides struggled with a heavy pitch and scoring attempts verged on the farcical, save for the 13 minute spell when all four goals were netted.

Internal divisions wrecked Newcastle's preparations for this tie at Elland Road, Leeds.

Charlie Wayman was dropped and both Joe Harvey and Len Shackleton were in dispute with the club, although they played.

The Addicks however were intent on going one step further than the previous season, when they were the beaten finalists.

Their South Shields-born goalkeeper Sam Bartram would go on to help them achieve that feat.

The exertions of their midweek Fairs Cup trip to Portugal clearly affected Newcastle, but a handball by Jeff Blockley allowed Pop Robson to put his side ahead from the penalty spot.

John McNamee then sealed the win when he took Jackie Sinclair's pass and hammered a rising shot past Bill Glazier and into the net.

This was the final game that the covered Leazes terrace that had been home to thousands of United fans was open.

Future Magpies youth coach Kevin Richardson scored the only goal at Goodison Park, although visiting goalkeeper Dave McKellar felt that he was impeded by Graeme Sharp as the cross came over.

Chances to equalise came and went: Paul Gascoigne hit a post and Ian Stewart put the rebound wide with the goal gaping.

Billy Whitehurst was then flagged offside as he touched in a shot on the line before blazing another shot into the Gwladys Street End.

Kevin Ratcliffe's trip on Glenn Roeder was then deemed to be a penalty, only for future Toffee Peter Beardsley to step up and whack the ball over Bobby Mimms' crossbar - his third successive failure from the spot.

United's sixth successive home league win - their best top flight run since 1948 - was called "thoroughly professional" by manager Kevin Keegan.

Darren Peacock's Magpies debut was made easier by the absence of Canaries striker Chris Sutton, the defender getting upfield to nod on a corner that Andy Cole eventually converted.

SJP old boy Gary Megson was in the visiting lineup, along with Robert Ullathorne - who later joined Newcastle on non-contract terms but got no further than the reserves.

Following a three game stadium ban for his touchline tussle with Hull City's David Meyler, Alan Pardew returned to one of his former clubs - albeit in the seats near to owner Mike Ashley.

United were pummeled by the Saints, who made and missed ten chances before going ahead in the final seconds of the first half.

An apparent on-field mutiny was then ended by Pardew withdrawing Hatem Ben Arfa at half time, but only goalkeeper Rob Elliot prevented a loss of mammoth proportions.
