Parade:
Silverware
celebrated
Tens of thousands of fans brought Newcastle
city centre to a standstill on Saturday afternoon, as Eddie Howe, staff and
players showed off the Carabao Cup.
Two open top buses left SJP at 4.30pm,
nudging their way through celebrating crowds on Barrack Road, Gallowgate,
Percy Street, Haymarket and the Great North Road before arriving at the Town
Moor.

The squad disembarked to be met by further crowds surrounding a specially
erected stage, where former players including Bob Moncur, Les Ferdinand and
Alan Shearer had preceded them.

Ant & Dec (who had joined the players on the bus from SJP) introduced
Howe & Co. to the acclaim of the fans, before Kieran Trippier, Jamaal
Lascelles and Bruno Guimaraes recreated their Wembley trophy lift.
Howe took to the microphone to express his thanks to those who
attended and introduce club backroom staff individually along with CEO
Darren Eales.
A group photo was then taken with the Town Moor crowd providing the backdrop
before the event concluded with a drone show presented by club sponsor Sela
in the gathering gloom.

BBC coverage of the day is online here
PS: The attendance was estimated at 300K, equally split between the
parade and moor. In reality, some fans saw the former then headed to the
latter but there was still an enormous turnout - the manager and his players
looking genuinely staggered by what unfolded before their eyes.

An update on what's left in the PL this
season:
Confirmed:
Wed 02.04.2025 Brentford (h) 7.45pm no TV
Mon 07.04.2025 Leicester City (a) 8pm Sky
Sun 13.04.2025 Man United (h) 4.30pm Sky
Wed 16.04.2025 Palace (h) 7.30pm Sky
Sat 19.04.2025 Aston Villa (a) 5.30pm Sky
Sat 26.04.2025 Ipswich Town (h) 3pm no TV
Sun 04.05.2025 Brighton (a) 2pm Sky
Unconfirmed:
Sat 10.05.2025 tbc Chelsea (h) TV tbc (if any)
Live TV selections for this
weekend should have been announced by the PL last Friday...but they weren't.
The Blues are in Conference League quarter-final action against Legia Warsaw
on Thu 10.04.2025 and Thu 17.04.2025. Victory would see them play
semi-finals on Thu 01.05.2025 and Thu 08.05.2025 - meaning that the visit to
SJP would be later than Sat 10.05.2025.
On that basis, when this round of PL games are set, a day other than Sat
10.05.2025 will be announced - or we'll end up as an either/or selection,
with both Spurs and Manchester United in possible Europa League action that
same night, Thu 08.05.2025.
Sun 18.05.2025 tbc Arsenal (a) TV tbc (if any)
The PL's deadline for confirming that weekend's TV picks is Fri 04.04.2025.
No PL games will be played on Sat 17.05.2025 to avoid clashing with the FA
Cup Final, but we could play on Fri 16.05.2025 or Mon 19.05.2025 as well as
the Sun 18.05.2025 slot currently penciled in.
Due to Palace's FA Cup semi-final qualification, their PL visit to Arsenal will
be rescheduled. Were that game to end up in the midweek before or after the
final, that could impact the date of our Arsenal visit - although that would
be less likely if Palace got to the final.
The Gunners are in Champions League quarter final action against Real Madrid
on Tue 08.04.2025 and Wed 16.04.2025. Victory would see them play
semi-finals on or around Tue 29.04.2025 and Wed 07.05.2025 - again with
possible consequences for their PL schedule.
Confirmed:
Sun 25.05.2025 Everton (h) 4pm TV tbc (if any)
The last games of the PL season will all kick off at the same date and time,
with TV selections announced following the penultimate round of PL games.
U21s:
Second string
back at college
Monday sees Newcastle U21s in PL2 action,
looking to seal a top sixteen spot with three games of the season remaining
in order to qualify for the knockout phase.
Currently sitting thirteenth, Diarmuid O'Carroll's side face a Nottingham
Forest side who are four points and four places below them, but with a
game in hand.
The game is a 7pm kick-off at the Loughborough University Stadium
and tickets are on sale now, but must be pre-booked online here
There's no live stream advertised.
This will be the second time that Newcastle U21s have played at this venue,
defeating Derby County 4-1 there back in April 2023.
The main section of United's season then concludes on the following two
Mondays, versus Reading at SJP on April 7th and Manchester City at the Joie Stadium on
Monday April 14th. Both games are 7pm starts.
2024/25:
Brentford
(h)
The Magpies return to Premier
League action on Wednesday, when Thomas Frank brings his
Bees to Gallowgate for a non-televised 7.45pm start.
This will be only the eighth time that the two clubs have met in top-flight
competition, United winning five and drawing one of the first six before
Brentford notched up their maiden success in West London last
December.
Eddie Howe's side sit sixth
in the table on 47 points, with Brentford six points and five places behind
that having played a game more.
It's the second meeting of the two sides on Tyneside this season, following
Newcastle's 3-1 success in the Carabao Cup quarter-final back in December.
Team: Anthony
Gordon will serve the third and final game of his suspension, while Sven
Botman and Lewis Hall remain sidelined following surgery.
Injury victim Jamaal Lascelles is nearing a return to the squad a year after
his most recent appearance.
Coral rate this game as follows:
NUFC win 4/6
The draw 10/3
BFC win 12/5

BFC: Fabio Carvalho remains out but Michael Kayode, Mathias Jensen,
Igor Thiago, Josh Dasilva and Aaron Hickey could all return.
Since a 1-2 loss at Chelsea last December, Brentford are unbeaten on the
road in the PL: a 0-0 draw at Brighton followed by victories at Southampton
(5-0), Crystal Palace (2-1), West Ham (1-0), Leicester City (4-0) and Bournemouth (2-1).
Referee: Peter Bankes - third Toon posting of the season for
the Lancastrian official, after the 1-3 PL defeat at Fulham and 0-1 PL home
loss to Brighton.
Brentford have also lost both of the games Bankes has taken charge of this
time round.

Robert ruins record
Newcastle U18s
1 Everton U18s 2
Coming into Saturday's home game on
the back of a four game winning run, Newcastle U18s fell behind after just
44 seconds when Everton's Harvey Fraser fired home.
The visitors then came close to doubling their lead just seconds later; only a
vital clearance inside the six yard box denying Adelaide Akirkin.
To complete a frantic start, Magpies goalkeeper Will Anderson was unable to
continue after sustaining a leg injury in the seventh minute. He was eventually
stretchered off to be replaced by Tyler Jones.
The substitute custodian was beaten in first half added time, Fraser's corner
kick from the Everton right was headed home unopposed by Ray Robert.
Playing with the wind in the second period the Magpies charged upfield
straight from the start, Joe
Brayson mis-kicking when well placed in front of goal.
United did reduce the arrears when Aaron Epia looped a 61st minute header
over Seve Patrick and into the Toffees net, but no equaliser followed despite
heavy pressure and seven minutes of added time.
Team: Anderson (Jones 7), Bloomer (Tika-Lemba 81), Cogdon, Johnson,
Epia (Durrant 67), Taylor, Fitzgerald, Harper (Alabi 81), Wooster, Brayson
(O'Donovan 81), Ferreira.

Good(ison) Friday
Now
just weeks away from leaving Goodison Park, the Everton Heritage Society
have uncovered extended footage of a Newcastle victory at the Toffees almost
exactly 70 years ago online here
60,068 fans were on the blue side of Stanley Park to see Newcastle win 2-1
on Good Friday 1955 thanks to goals from George Hannah and Vic Keeble.
Newcastle went ahead when ex-Toffees amateur
George Hannah shot home following a Len White corner kick in the 17th minute
(11.37 on the video).
Everton soon levelled through Wally Fielding (15.50), but the Magpies
collected both points when Liverpool-born Hannah centred for Keeble to head
in from point-blank range in the 75th minute (49.55).
That was enough to end United's five game winless league run in Division One
and just a month later, they lifted the FA Cup at Wembley.

Born Or Died:
1941 John Mitten
born, Davyhulme, Manchester. (1958-61)
 Following
the appointment of Charlie Mitten as United boss, his son followed him from
Mansfield Town to SJP in September 1958.
An England
Youth international left winger, John made his first team debut against West Bromwich Albion in November of that year.
However, he missed
a penalty as Newcastle lost 2-1 in front of their own fans.
Retaining his place for a 3-2 defeat at Leeds the following Saturday, Mitten
junior wasn't sighted again in the first team until March 1960, when he enjoyed
a short run of games and scored his first senior goals, netting twice during a
4-1 victory at Bolton.
Following his father out of the club in 1961, John signed for Leicester City - also
playing county cricket for Leicestershire until 1963 as a right-handed
batsman/wicket keeper upon which he was granted a free transfer.
Pursued by Reading, Ipswich Town, QPR and Coventry City, Mitten instead agreed
a short-term move to his father's former club Manchester United.
However that came to nothing and he made a switch to Coventry in July 1963,
playing in the Sky Blue side along with future Magpie John Tudor that won promotion to the First Division in 1967.
Later appearing for Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City, Bath City, Trowbridge
Town, Sidmouth Town, his last club was Tiverton Town as player manager. He
remained in Devon following his retirement.

1949
John Hope born, Shildon.
(1969-71)

Goalkeeper who began his career as an apprentice with Darlington
in 1964 before turning professional three years later and making his bow for
the Quakers.
Moving to SJP in an £8,000 transfer in March 1969, John's only competitive
first team outing for Newcastle came in a 0-1 loss at Manchester City two
months later.
Also named as a substitute goalkeeper for Fairs Cup ties in the days before 'keepers made the
bench for domestic matches, Hope was never to be called upon.
Moving on to Sheffield United with David Ford in part exchange for John
Tudor in 1971, he helped the Blades gain promotion to Division One in his
first season - in part due to a record-setting run of seven clean sheets.
Called up by England at U23 level but never getting a game, Hope was loaned out
to Preston North End during the 1973/74 season and then left Bramall Lane on a
free transfer a year later.
With no takers for his services, John returned to the North East and to his
former trade as a welder, appearing briefly for non league Gateshead United.
Agreeing a two year deal with Arcadia in the South African city of
Pretoria, he lasted barely three months before packing his bags again and
joining Hartlepool United for the
1975/76 campaign.
Playing and coaching at non-league level for Stockton, Wingate, Whitby Town and
Willington, John subsequently spent time coaching both Darlington and
Hartlepool.
His death was reported in July 2016, following a diagnosis of Parkinson's
disease some years earlier.

1987 Death of Ron
Williams, 80.
(1933-35)

1994
Jetro Willems born, Rotterdam, Netherlands (2019-20)

The second arrival of the summer 2019 transfer window was a
Dutch international left back signed on a season-long loan from Bundesliga
side Eintracht Frankfurt.
The 25 year-old was first linked with a move to Tyneside in 2018 and was keen
to leave Germany after being used in a midfield role.
Rotterdam-born, Jetro's family came from the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao
and he first played at hometown club Spartaan '20.
Joining Sparta Rotterdam in 2010, a move to PSV Eindhoven followed and he
played in 2015 and 2016 title-winning sides with Luuk De Jong
and Gini Wijnaldum.
Moving on to Frankfurt in 2017, Willems won a German Cup winner's medal during
his first season at the club but proved unable to regain his place in the
Dutch squad.
First seen in the home friendly against St. Etienne, a competitive debut came
a week later from the bench at home to Arsenal.
Fielded in a left wing back role, Willems then marked his arrival in England
with a superb strike during our usual defeat at Anfield.
Jetro soon settled in and a goal in the 2-2 home draw with Manchester City
boosted his popularity further, claims that his loan was set to become
permanent looking to be welcomed by the player on social media.
His 20th game in our colours sadly proved to be his last: stretchered
off early on in a 1-0 home win over Chelsea during January 2020 and undergoing knee
surgery that ended his season and saw his loan terminated.
Willems recovered from his surgery enough to be on the bench for Eintracht but
failed to make a single appearance and left that Summer on a free transer.
Joining newly-promoted Bundesliga side Greuther Furth in August 2021, he played regularly but
failed to prevent them making an immediate second tier return.
Exiting in September 2022, the following February saw Jetro agree a short-term
contract at Eredivisie side Groningen
following a successful trial.
He hit the headlines in only his fourth game for the club - quite literally
- punched by a Groningen follower while acting as peacemaker when trouble flared in
a game against Heerenveen.
Leaving Groningen that summer Willems spent a season with fellow Eredivisie

Fraser Digby advanced off his line to block Mick

After the two week international break that
followed their FA Cup quarter final loss at
Manchester City, a depleted Newcastle took three
points in memorable style at SJP.
Ahead early on, the injury that forced Jamaal
Lascelles off unsettled the home defence and the
visitors recovered to lead 3-1 early in the second

A late brace from substitute Harvey Barnes completed
the comeback before Gordon was red-carded during 10
