Bellissimo!

Newcastle  2  Brentford  1

An astonishing finish from Sandro Tonali gave United three points at St.James' Park on Wednesday night, ending Brentford's sequence of five successive Premier League away wins in the process.

There seemed no danger when the Italian took the ball level with the six yard box towards the right hand touchline in front of the East Stand, but he immediately lashed it right-footed past the startled Mark Flekken - the third time he's done so against the Dutch 'keeper at the Leazes End this season.

An unchanged line-up from that which started at Wembley 17 days earlier were roared on the field before kick-off, Wor Flags mounting separate displays in three stands including one depicting the Carabao Cup.

A first half of few clear-cut chances for either side ended with the hosts going ahead in added time, Jacob Murphy centering from the right for Alexander Isak to convert a first-time shot from close range - aided by Mbeumo falling on his backside as the cross arrived.

Isak had looked a certain scorer seconds earlier when breaking into the box, but took too many touches before opting to pass the ball rather than shoot - Harvey Barnes offside by the time he belatedly headed in.

Clad in a displeasing pink and purple change kit, the Bees pressed United back more and more as the second period unfolded; levelling from the spot after Nick Pope collided with Yoan Wissa in the box and Bryan Mbeumo converted the resultant penalty.

The visitors then came closing to scoring again almost immediately; Ethan Pinnock nodding Kevin Schade's cross onto the post, Pope gratefully grabbing the rebound to avert further danger.

A see-saw final quarter of the game saw opportunities for both sides but Tonali's memorable strike was the only time that anyone got a meaningful effort on target.

Brentford's no-nonsense approach of punting the ball upfield meant that Dan Burn was kept busy with aerial challenges, having spent much of the game shadowing midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk.

The Cup Final hero almost blotted his copybook during eight minutes of time added on, stumbling as the impressive Schade worked the ball over from the right edge of the box.

Thankfully though Mikkel Damsgaard's first-time shot from 12 yards cleared the Gallowgate crossbar by a considerable distance.

Victory saw Newcastle reach the 50 point mark for the season and maintain fifth place in the table with nine games remaining.

Not a classic by any means, but a valuable win over a well-drilled side who hadn't lost anywhere on the road since the Carabao Cup defeat here last December.

Given the epic nature of the last few weeks round these parts, this had all the hallmarks of a rude awakening.

Thankfully though, Eddie Howe and his players did enough to avoid the banana skin and refocus on the task of improving on the European Conference League playoff place that they already possess.

Team: Pope, Trippier (Krafth 89), Livramento, Burn, Schar, Joelinton, Guimaraes, Tonali, Barnes (Miley 90+8), J.Murphy (Willock 66), Isak (Wilson 66).
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Neave, Osula, Shahar, Longstaff.

Booked: Schar

Joelinton now has three games in which to avoid the booking which will land him with a two-game ban and Burn needs to avoid two cautions in the same period to avoid suffering the same fate.

Goals: Isak 45+2, Tonali 74

BFC: Flekken, Lewis-Potter, Pinnock (Ajer 83), Collins, van den Berg, Janelt (Damsgaard 59), Norgaard, Schade, Yarmoliuk (Maghoma 83), Mbeumo, Wissa.
Subs n/u: Kayode, Ji-Soo, Konak, Mee, Morgan, Valdimarsson.

Goal: Mbeumo 66pen

Booked: Lewis-Potter

Eddie Howe:

"It wasn't pretty. I don't think we played as well as we did against Liverpool
(in the Carabao Cup Final).

(Sandro) Tonali has a thunderbolt of a strike when he does go for goal. I am mightily relieved to see it hit the net.

"Always after the international break the games are different. We had players in different physical moments and we looked to have picked up a few minor injuries but hopefully nothing to keep anyone out of the next game.

"We are relieved to come through with the three points."

date revealed

The Premier League confirm that next season's fixtures will be released at 9am on Wednesday 18.06.2025.

The 2025/26 season will run from Saturday 16.08.2025 through to Sunday 24.05.2026.

Latest:
Fab: deal done

Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning, Eddie Howe confirmed that Fabian Schar was in the process of signing a contract extending his stay on Tyneside.

The former Swiss international defender turns 34 in December and has made 220 appearances scoring 19 goals since his £3m arrival from Deportivo La Coruna ahead of the 2018/19 season.

That leaves a trio of current squad members out of contact this summer - Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson and John Ruddy - plus Mark Gillespie and Jamal Lewis.

Unhappy hour

On-loan Magpie Travis Hernes found himself in hot water following his current side Aalborg's 0-4 home defeat in the Danish SuperLiga last weekend.

The 19 year-old midfielder was one of three players who made what AaB described as an "untimely night club trip" following a squad meal and were spotted by disgruntled fans, with photos soon appearing on social media.

Hernes and the other two players issued a joint public apology for breaking club rules and the matter will be dealt with internally, said an AaB spokesman.

Robert ruins record

Newcastle U18s  1  Everton U18s  2

Coming into Saturday's home game on the back of a four game winning run, Newcastle U18s fell behind after just 44 seconds when Everton's Harvey Fraser fired home.

The visitors then came close to doubling their lead just seconds later; only a vital clearance inside the six yard box denying Adelaide Akirkin.

To complete a frantic start, Magpies goalkeeper Will Anderson was unable to continue after sustaining a leg injury in the seventh minute. He was eventually stretchered off to be replaced by Tyler Jones.

The substitute custodian was beaten in first half added time, Fraser's corner kick from the Everton right was headed home unopposed by Ray Robert.

Playing with the wind in the second period the Magpies charged upfield straight from the start, Joe Brayson mis-kicking when well placed in front of goal.

United did reduce the arrears when Aaron Epia looped a 61st minute header over Seve Patrick and into the Toffees net, but no equaliser followed despite heavy pressure and seven minutes of added time.

Team: Anderson (Jones 7), Bloomer (Tika-Lemba 81), Cogdon, Johnson, Epia (Durrant 67), Taylor, Fitzgerald, Harper (Alabi 81), Wooster, Brayson (O'Donovan 81), Ferreira.

Booked: Cogdon, Alabi, Ferreira

Away win:
Good(ison) Friday

Now just weeks away from leaving Goodison Park, the Everton Heritage Society have uncovered extended footage of a Newcastle victory at the Toffees almost exactly 70 years ago online here

60,068 fans were on the blue side of Stanley Park to see Newcastle win 2-1 on Good Friday 1955 thanks to goals from George Hannah and Vic Keeble.

Newcastle went ahead when ex-Toffees amateur George Hannah shot home following a Len White corner kick in the 17th minute (11.37 on the video).

Everton soon levelled through Wally Fielding (15.50), but the Magpies collected both points when Liverpool-born Hannah centred for Keeble to head in from point-blank range in the 75th minute (49.55).

That was enough to end United's five game winless league run in Division One and just a month later, they lifted the FA Cup at Wembley.

Born Or Died:

1990 Mark Bertram born, Newcastle.
(2005-08)

Defender/midfielder who came through the club's Academy and featured at the 2005 Northern Ireland Milk Cup tournament.

Mark's reserve team debut came at right back against Manchester City in September 2006 - an eventful game at Kingston Park that ended in a 4-3 win for Newcastle.

Two first team substitute appearances then followed in pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2007/08 season, away to Hartlepool United and Hull City.

However, Mark failed to secure a professional deal at SJP and was released in March 2008, moving across the Tyne to Gateshead.

Subsequently joining Northern League side Team Northumbria and playing cricket for both Benwell and Walbottle, he coached at Walbottle Campus and Newcastle United's Academy,

Later moves took Berty to Whitley Bay, Durham City and Seaham Red Star, while he continued to gain his coaching badges and worked at Northumbria University.

Weakened by the exertions of a fine 3-1 victory at Manchester City the previous day, Newcastle won again - but only thanks to a large slice of good fortune.

Colin Veitch saw his 18th minute penalty saved but atoned within five minutes.

England international forward Fred Blackburn then levelled and the game looked destined for a draw until referee AJ Barker deflected a pass from Jim Howie into the path of Ronald Orr, who netted into an open goal.

Rovers played the second half with ten men after Adam Bowman broke a cheek bone in a collision with Tom Wills; also losing Jack Dewhurst, who limped off after the winner.

Willie Gibson then levelled from a free kick before Neil Harris gave United the lead. Visiting goalkeeper Alfie Harland was knocked out as he punched away Stan Seymour's header, colliding with him as Harris netted.

He was replaced by David Raitt for the last few minutes of the first half but recovered to return between the posts after half time.

However, the goalkeeper failed to cut out a long cross-shot from Seymour that was deflected into the net to seal United's first league win in four games.

1928 Gallacher drew a blank as his Scotland side were beaten 1-2 in front of over 111,000 spectators at Hampden Park.

Ahead through Thomas Lang's close range finish, Newcastle conceded just seconds after the interval when David Jack headed past goalkeeper Mick Burns.

Newcastle gave a debut to Gateshead goalkeeper George Wood and despite conceding three times, he was almost immediately secured on a professional contract at Gallowgate.

Having previously guested for United, Johnny Spuhler netted for his parent club. Within six months however, he'd made a permanent switch to Middlesbrough.

United stayed second in the table as Jackie Milburn eclipsed his England colleagues Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen with a well-taken brace.

However, any faint hopes of overhauling champions-elect Portsmouth ended when Pompey scored five goals without reply at Gallowgate four days later.

Magpies boss George Martin was absent, scouting an unidentified transfer target at the Lincoln City versus Blackburn Rovers game.

After a 0-0 draw five days earlier at Hillsborough, the teams met again at another neutral ground, this time Elland Road, Leeds.

With just minutes to play and a second replay looming, Newcastle were awarded a penalty following handball in the box.

With the nominated spot kick taker Jackie Milburn injured and nobody else willing to take responsibility, Bobby Mitchell grabbed the ball, spotted it and converted the winner.

A point from this rearranged Wednesday night game lifted Bill McGarry's side into fourth spot - but had they defended a 92nd minute corner more effectively then third place was theirs.

Sadly Steve Hardwick could only punch the ball out to Tristan Benjamin, who lobbed it straight back over his head to steal a point for the "other" Magpies.

1985 A 2-0 win over Birmingham City in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final put United in the driving seat.

Inspiration at St.Andrew's came from Paul Gascoigne and the goals from Joe Allon and Paul Stephenson - a resounding 5-2 victory in the second leg at SJP confirming our place in the final.

Having been on the wrong end of a 0-4 away loss five months earlier, revenge was sweet for United, young striker Michael O'Neill going one better than the brace he'd bagged at SJP against Coventry City a week earlier.

The Hatters had extracted the urine down at Kenilworth Road and Toon midfielder Kenny Wharton repaid them in kind here.

"Kenny, Kenny sit on the ball"
sang home fans and he did just that - much to the annoyance of the Hatters, particularly headband-wearing nugget Steve Foster. Happy days.

Newcastle's season imploded in an unbelievable 20 minute spell at St. James' Park in the second half of this game.

Not only did the wheels come off but the doors and the roof were also forcibly removed as three home players were red-carded, with Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer disgracefully grappling with each other in the middle of the pitch, continuing to clash in the tunnel.

United fell behind early on when Juan Pablo Angel put the visitors ahead with a low drive after some sloppy work from Jermaine Jenas.

Darius Vassell ran through on goal and his shot was saved by Steven Taylor's hand, although the defender deserved an Oscar for clutching his face in mock injury.

Gareth Barry fired a fierce penalty past Shay Given and it was soon 0-3 when clueless whistler Barry Knight judged that Stephen Carr had fouled Vassell, Barry registering his second and Villa's third again from the spot.

Then came the Dyer and Bowyer spat that defied belief. By the time Nobby Solano appeared as a late Villa sub, home fans had either flounced out in disgust or were too numb to acknowledge the Peruvian.

2006 Comments from Chairman Freddy Shepherd as reported by the Sunday Mirror:

"Our aim is to have the new management structure in place before the last ball of the season is kicked.

"We don't want to have uncertainty lingering on through the close season and we want supporters and players to finish the season knowing who will be in charge next August.

"We have taken our time, because this is one of the biggest decisions in the history of this club.

"The top clubs are opening up a huge gap between themselves and others. We need to get the right man to ensure we are one of those leading clubs.

"We have had a host of top names declaring their interest but we have kept them secret. When the time is right - and that isn't too far away - we will name the man to lead us into the future."

And that man...? Glenn Roeder. Another big decision Freddy got completely wrong.

2009 "We will give it a right good go" were the words of newly-installed Newcastle boss Alan Shearer at his press conference, having taken over for the remaining eight games of the season, assisted by Iain Dowie.

Shearer was introduced to the media before going outside to greet fans mustered in front of Old Milburn reception.

Somewhat prophetically he commented: "All I'm interested in is eight games and eight games only." He was to get his wish....

It wasn't as comfortable as it should have been but Mick Mcmackem's side left SJP with their tails between their legs after a sound beating.

Goals from Kevin Nolan and Shola Ameobi gave United a two-goal cushion at half-time and when Peter Lovenkrands made it 3-0 just after the break it looked to be game over.

After Sylvan Ebanks-Blake had reduced the arrears though, the jitters set in until Jonas Gutierrez belatedly struck in added time

Two equalisers from substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic failed to stop United tumbling to an eighth successive away defeat after added-time agony.

It was a tale of two handballs at Carrow Road: one decision in our favour, allowing Mitrovic to make it 2-2 from the spot before City similarly profited from the use of a hand to win it in added time.
