Premier League:
Murphy brace boosts Champs League bid

Leicester City  0  Newcastle  3

Match action is online here

A third successive Premier League win for Newcastle saw them regain fifth spot on Monday evening, drawing level with Chelsea on points and having a game in hand on the fourth-placed Blues.

As he had done against the Foxes during a 4-0 home victory in December, Jacob Murphy set United on their way with the opening goal, knocking Tino Livramento's low centre home within the opening two minutes.

Murphy was then in the right place again nine minutes later to put an unchanged Magpies side 2-0 up; converting the loose ball after Fabian Schar's audacious effort from the halfway line struck the crossbar.

Harvey Barnes then found the net after Joelinton's shot was blocked in the 34th minute, the City old boy opting not to celebrate the goal that prompted crowds of disconsolate home followers to leave their seats.

Top scorer Alexander Isak twice looked set to score but fired wide on both occasions in a one-sided opening half when a substantial margin of victory looked likely.

Without a goal in their last 670 minutes of league action going into this game, the hosts enjoyed more of the ball after the interval as Newcastle became complacent.

However Ruud van Nistelrooy's side proved to be totally incapable of threatening Nick Pope's goal after veteran Jamie Vardy tested the goalkeeper straight from the first whistle. Otherwise, he offered as little as the rest of his beleaguered colleagues.

Visiting substitute William Osula and Barnes both blasted over following isolated moments of clarity from United in a turgid and disjointed second 45 minutes.

Speaking after full time, Howe confirmed that Anthony Gordon was yet to resume training since returning early from international duty last month, although his three match ban has now ended.

Fellow absentee Joe Willock was omitted from the squad meanwhile in accordance with concussion protocols after taking a blow to the head in the Brentford game.

Eddie Howe said:

"Really pleased. A massive win for us. We knew it wasn't going to be easy. We started really well and that gave us the foundation to go and win.

"It was a great start to the game for us. It was a brilliant first goal, brilliant execution of how we want to play.

"We stuck to our task. We were professional and it was really good to get a clean sheet and three goals.

“That was a big question mark against us, how would we respond to the high (of the Carabao Cup win). The players have responded magnificently. It’s a tick in the box for our psychology.

"Early season there were games where we were frustrated by our output, by the effort. It was uncharacteristic. That had never happened before in my time here. But now we’re in a good place.

"We look united. We have a purpose and we’re trying to get there. We’re where we need to be. Confidence is high at the moment, but there are areas we need to improve."

Stats:

Eddie Howe's side have now taken 27 points on the road this season thanks to eight victories and three draws.

This the third season they've won eight times away from home in the PL, having also done so in 2011/12 and 2022/23. Their best return remains nine during both 1993/94* and 2001/02.

(*21 away games played in 1993/94, others were 19).

Following a 4-0 victory on Tyneside back in December, Newcastle completed their fifth PL win double of the season. They have also gained six points from Spurs, Wolves, Southampton and Forest.

Newcastle notched up their fifth successive clean sheet in league and cup games against Leicester.

U18s:
Third time unlucky

Stoke City U18s  5  Newcastle U18s  3

Newcastle U18s were beaten for the first time away from home in 2025 on Saturday, losing a see-saw league encounter at Stoke's Clayton Wood Academy.

Enjoying 4-2 and 4-1 victories over the Potters already this season, the young Magpies found themselves two down at the interval; Charlie Wood heading home following 29th and 42nd minute corner kicks.

Joe Brayson's 58th minute effort reduced the arrears before Matheos Ferreira levelled six minutes later.

Back came the hosts and substitute Ryan Liu regained their lead on 71 minutes, only for United's Alex O'Donovan to restore parity within another six minutes.

The Magpies had no answer to Pedro Nzau's 79th minute goal however and a late penalty conversion from Lewis Bailey opened up a decisive two goal lead for Stoke.

Premier League:

Thanks for nothing

As we predicted, the Premier League have given two possible slots for the visit of Chelsea to SJP in May, depending on their European status.

Should Chelsea win their Conference League quarter-final against Legia Warsaw on Thu 10.04.2025 and Thu 17.04.2025, they will visit SJP for a Noon KO on Sunday May 11th

Should Chelsea lose their Conference League quarter-final against Legia Warsaw on Thu 10.04.2025 and Thu 17.04.2025, they will visit SJP for a 12.30pm KO on Saturday May 10th

Newcastle's confirmed PL games:

Sun 13.04.2025 Man United (h) 4.30pm Sky
Wed 16.04.2025 Palace (h) 7.30pm Sky

Sun 04.05.2025 Brighton (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 10.05.2025 tbc Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT
Sun 25.05.2025 Everton (h) 4pm TV tbc*

The date and KO time of one game remains tbc:

Sun 18.05.2025 tbc Arsenal (a) TV tbc (if any)

The deadline for confirming was this Friday, but as expected, nothing was forthcoming from the PL.

No PL games will be played on Sat 17.05.2025 to avoid clashing with the FA Cup Final, but in theory we could visit the Emirates on Fri 16.05.2025, Sun 18.05.2025 or Mon 19.05.2025.

We did speculate on whether the rescheduling of the Arsenal versus Crystal Palace game would have any bearing on when we faced The Gunners - that will now take place on Wed 23.04.2025 so becomes irrelevant.

* The final PL games will all kick off at the same date and time regardless of whether they are chosen for TV or not. Those TV selections will be announced following the penultimate round of PL games.

Fab: deal done

Update: NUFC confirmed on Thursday that a 12 month contract extension had been signed by Schar.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning, Eddie Howe confirmed that Fabian Schar was in the process of signing a contract extending his stay on Tyneside.

The former Swiss international defender turns 34 in December and has made 220 appearances scoring 19 goals since his £3m arrival from Deportivo La Coruna ahead of the 2018/19 season.

That leaves a trio of current squad members out of contact this summer - Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson and John Ruddy - plus Mark Gillespie and Jamal Lewis.

On This Day in History
7th April

Born Or Died:

1878 Samuel Graham born, Galston, Scotland. (1902-05)

Outside right who made his Magpies debut in a 0-3 loss at Wolves in November 1902, retaining his place for the following week's 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United.

Recalled to the side just over a year later, Sam failed to break his senior scoring duck in four more appearances and moved on to Norwich City.

Graham then returned to Scotland in 1906 and played for Kilmarnock.

1903 Thomas John Evans born, Maerdy, Wales. (1927-29)

Impressing club officials when he appeared for Clapton Orient in an FA Cup victory over United, "Con" arrived two years later as a replacement for Frank Hudspeth.

However Evans suffered with knee problems that were to see him retire in 1929, having added just one Welsh international cap to the three he won before moving to SJP.

Returning to Clapton Orient, Evans later moved back to Wales with Merthyr Town.

1959 Nigel Walker born, Gateshead.
(1977-82)

Talented, ball-playing midfielder who appeared for Whickham Juniors and trained with United, but waited until leaving school before signing a professional deal at SJP.

A first team debut came in a 1-1 home draw with Bristol City during November 1977 - a result that saw the departure of manager Richard Dinnis.

Nigel then appeared the following week in a 0-1 loss at Wolves, as coach Willie McFaul took over as caretaker boss for one game.

However, the appointment of Bill McGarry saw him drop out of the first team picture until a recall against Derby in March 1978 - three appearances for three different managers!

Following relegation, Nigel became a more regular member of the first team but lacked consistency and was never a favourite of old school disciplinarian McGarry - or certain sections of the crowd.

Overlooked at the start of the 1980/81 season but selected when Joe Harvey took over as caretaker boss, Nigel finally seemed to have established himself in the latter part of the season under Arthur Cox and scored a fine goal against Orient in May 1981.

The following season though saw him fall down the pecking order, with what proved to be his final game being a 1-2 loss at Chelsea during November of that year.

After being informed that no new contract offer was likely, Nigel had an unsuccessful trial at Plymouth Argyle.

Contact via a local journalist then saw him move to US-based side San Diego Sockers, crossing the Atlantic shortly before Kevin Keegan made his entrance on Tyneside.

Nigel later returned to England and played for Crewe Alexandra, Sunderland, Blackpool (loan), Chester City and Hartlepool United.

He then combined playing for non-league Blyth Spartans and Dunston Federation with studying and following graduation, became a schoolteacher in county Durham.

Diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma, Nigel battled on for 25 years before secondary cancers were discovered during 2013. Sadly he lost his fight for life in early February 2014, aged just 54.

1990 Fabio Zamblera born, Bergamo, Italy. (2008-11)

Italian U19 international striker who moved to Newcastle on a four year deal in January 2008 from Atalanta's youth side for £300K.

Although brought to SJP while Kevin Keegan was nominally in charge, the signing of the so-called "wonderkid" was completed by Dennis Wise and Jeff Vetere, as part of the club's "buy young, sell big" policy.

Atlanta made noises about their youth team being pillaged by unwelcome invaders, but having seen Fabio play, the tongue was firmly in their Bergamo cheeks - after one particularly feckless display, we labelled him uovo dell'anatra*.

Making his reserve debut against Everton at St. James’ Park in March of that year, Fabio scored his first Newcastle goal for the U18s against Blackburn Rovers a month later.

The powerfully-built player had appeared at the 2007 U17 European Championship Finals and the U19 event in July 2008. However he struggled with injury and made no impact in his limited outings.

February 2009 saw Fabio return to Italy on loan to Sampdoria, but he failed to get near their first team and returned to SJP the following summer -as the Genoa club politely waived their option to sign him.

Appearing for our reserves in pre-season, a season-long loan move to AS Roma followed - although confined to youth team duties  at the Stadio Olimpico.

Fabio finally exited from SJP in September 2011, some weeks after a rare sighting in our reserve squad during our pre-season tour of Holland (although he didn't play).

He later resurfaced at a clutch of Italian lower league sides including Brescia, Bellaria, Valcalepio, Palazzolo, Padova and Atletico Montichiari.

The Journal  reported that once the score was 1-4, "the concluding portion of the game was a complete farce" and "never since United were a club have they got such a showing up."

An inauspicious start for Robert Bradley at right back, who was never selected again. The consolation goal came direct from a corner by William Chalmers, also on his debut.

A sensational start to this game at Villa Park saw mid-table United net three times in quick succession to stun a Villa who were shadowing champions-elect Arsenal.

0-3 down, the hosts reshuffled their side and had reduced the arrears to one by half time.

A penalty early in the second period gave Villa hope and Tom "Pongo" Waring nicked the ball from the grasp of goalkeeper Mick Burns to net a late winner.

The Spireites deservedly took both points however thanks to a rapid brace from South-African born forward Dudley Milligan.

United fielded former Chesterfield favourite Harry Clifton, but he made little impact.

1939 Newcastle had rather more success in the Central League meeting with Chesterfield at SJP, winning 3-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Arthur Frost.

Defeat at Maine Road left United left deep in relegation trouble and aggrieved that a 59th minute incident when the ball twice ended up in the home net failed to see referee Coulton award them a goal.

First, Bert Trautmann carried the ball over the goal line as Bill Curry shoulder-charged him, and then Jimmy Scoular charged down the free kick awarded to City - only for the referee to order a retake because he didn't see the original.

That added insult to injury for the Magpies, who protested that City's opener was scored by Joe Hayes using his hand.
