Arsenal's 3-0 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday confirms that the team
finishing fifth in the Premier League will qualify for next season's
Champions League.
All five sides will enter at the group stage.
That additional space has been granted by UEFA under their European
Performance Spot (EPS). The relevant Premier League press
release is online here

A third successive Premier League win for Newcastle saw them regain
fifth spot on Monday evening, drawing level with Chelsea on points
and having a game in hand on the fourth-placed Blues.
As he had done against the Foxes during a 4-0 home victory in
December, Jacob Murphy set United on their way with the opening
goal, knocking Tino Livramento's low centre home within the opening
two minutes.
Murphy was then in the right place again nine minutes later to put
an unchanged Magpies side 2-0 up; converting the loose ball after
Fabian Schar's audacious effort from the halfway line struck the
crossbar.
Harvey Barnes then found the net after Joelinton's shot was blocked
in the 34th minute, the City old boy opting not to celebrate the
goal that prompted crowds of disconsolate home followers to leave
their seats.
Top scorer Alexander Isak twice looked set to score but fired wide
on both occasions in a one-sided opening half when a substantial
margin of victory looked likely.
Without a goal in their last 670 minutes of league action going into
this game, the hosts enjoyed more of the ball after the interval as
Newcastle became complacent.
However Ruud van Nistelrooy's side proved to be totally incapable of
threatening Nick Pope's goal after veteran Jamie Vardy tested the
goalkeeper straight from the first whistle. Otherwise, he offered as
little as the rest of his beleaguered colleagues.
Visiting substitute William Osula and Barnes both blasted over
following isolated moments of clarity from United in a turgid and
disjointed second 45 minutes.
Speaking after full time, Howe confirmed that Anthony Gordon was yet
to resume training since returning early from international duty
last month, although his three match ban has now ended.
Fellow absentee Joe Willock was omitted from the squad meanwhile in
accordance with concussion protocols after taking a blow to the head
in the Brentford game.

Crowd: 30,403 including 3,263 away fans. Given that the
claimed current capacity is 32,259 then that total attendance looked
to be based on tickets sold than clicks through the
turnstiles.
Ex-Magpie - and former Fox - David Kelly was spotted in the Toon
section.
Eddie Howe said:
"Really pleased. A massive win for us. We knew it wasn't going
to be easy. We started really well and that gave us the foundation
to go and win.
"It was a great start to the game for us. It was a brilliant
first goal, brilliant execution of how we want to play.
"We stuck to our task. We were professional and it was really
good to get a clean sheet and three goals.
“That was a big question mark against us, how would we
respond to the high (of the Carabao Cup win). The players
have responded magnificently. It’s a tick in the box for our
psychology.
"Early season there were games where we were frustrated
by our output, by the effort. It was uncharacteristic. That had
never happened before in my time here. But now we’re in a good
place.
"We look united. We have a purpose and we’re trying to
get there. We’re where we need to be. Confidence is high at the
moment, but there are areas we need to improve.
"I don't think we were at our very best today. We
certainly need an upturn in performance if we're going to win our
next three."
On his side's chances of CL qualification:
"It's going to hot up. The next week for us is a big week. We
have three really tough games and that will go a long way in seeing
where we are at the end of the season.
"We are in a better position than we were but there is still a
lot of work to do.
"We’ve got three tough games and we’ve got to reset
and upturn our performances again.
“The players are experienced. They’ve been through a lot
in their careers. Three games in six days is going to be a big test
for us.
“We’re going to need everybody. The squad is still
stretched. We tried to manage the squad today with the game in a
good position.”

Stats:
Jacob Murphy's seventh PL goal of the campaign increases
his total in this competition to 18 - level with Anthony
Gordon and one less than Bruno Guimaraes.
PL goal number six this season for Harvey
Barnes beats his 2023/24 tally and takes him to 11 for
United.
That's one ahead of current colleagues Sean Longstaff and Jamaal
Lascelles, level with a host of SJP old boys including Keith
Gillespie, Salomon Rondon, Jonjo Shelvey, Steve Watson and Gini
Wijnaldum.
Murphy's opener was timed at 113 seconds, making it only the
fourth fastest NUFC goal this season:
1. Joe Willock Forest (a) LC 18 seconds
2. Alexander Isak Ipswich (h) PL 26 seconds
3. Anthony Gordon Villa (h) PL 80 seconds
4. Jacob Murphy Leicester (a) PL 113 seconds
Eddie Howe's side have now taken 27 points on the
road this season thanks to eight victories and three draws.
This is the third season they've won eight times away from home in the PL,
having also done so in 2011/12 and 2022/23. Their best return
remains nine during both 1993/94* and 2001/02.
(*21 away games played in 1993/94, others were 19).
Following a 4-0 victory on Tyneside back in December, Newcastle completed their
fifth PL win double of the season. They
have also gained
six points from Spurs, Wolves, Southampton and Forest.
Newcastle notched up their fifth successive clean sheet in
all league and
cup games against Leicester, both home and away.

From the PL:
Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga became the second-youngest
player ever to feature in a Premier League match, aged 15 years and
271 days.
Monga got his first taste of Premier League action as a
74th-minute substitute.
Only Ethan Nwaneri, who came on in stoppage time of Arsenal's
3-0 win at Brentford on 18 September 2022, was younger, aged 15
years and 181 days.
Monga wore squad number 93 and was clad in a shirt devoid of chest advertising due to Leicester having a betting company as their
shirt sponsor.

Newcastle U21s concluded their PL2 home
programme on Monday night with a resounding victory at St.James' Park that
confirmed a top 16 finish and a place in the end of season playoff round.
Goals from Garang Kuol (2), Alfie Harrison, Leo Shahar, Jay Turner-Cooke
(penalty), Johnny Emerson and Joe Brayson raised the Magpies up to ninth.
Australian international Kuol put the black and whites ahead on
twelve minutes before Harrison doubled the lead seven minutes before
half time.
Maltese international Basil Tuma looked to have got the Royals back
in the game five minutes after the restart, only for United to
regain their two goal advantage within three minutes when Kuol set
up Leo Shahar.
Kuol then went down in the box for a 65th minute penalty converted
by Turner-Cooke before substitute Johnny Emerson made it 5-1 after
79 minutes.
It was 6-1 with eight minutes remaining when Kuol fired home his
second of the night and eighth of the season in all competitions.
And the scoring was completed in the final seconds by Joe Brayson
with a close range effort, Kuol yet again claiming the assist.
Dairmuid O'Carroll's side end the regular season at table toppers
Manchester City next Monday - the Citizens needing to avoid defeat
in order to clinch the title for the fourth time in five seasons.
The top eight teams then host one additional playoff round game each

finishing playing the sixteenth, second the fifteenth etc.

Newcastle U18s were beaten for the
first time away from home in 2025 on Saturday, losing a see-saw league
encounter at Stoke's Clayton Wood Academy.
Enjoying 4-2 and 4-1 victories over the Potters already this season, the
young Magpies found themselves two down at the interval; Charlie Wood
heading home following 29th and 42nd minute corner kicks.
Joe Brayson's 58th minute effort reduced the arrears before Matheos Ferreira
levelled six minutes later.
Back came the hosts and substitute Ryan Liu regained their lead on 71
minutes, only for United's Alex O'Donovan to restore parity within another
six minutes.
The Magpies had no answer to Pedro Nzau's 79th minute goal however and a
late penalty conversion from Lewis Bailey opened up a decisive two goal lead
for Stoke.

given two possible slots for the visit of Chelsea to SJP in May,
depending on their European status.
Should Chelsea win their Conference League quarter-final against

Noon KO on Sunday May 11th.
Should Chelsea lose their Conference League quarter-final against

The deadline for confirming was last Friday, but as expected, nothing was
forthcoming from the PL.
No PL games will be played on Sat 17.05.2025 to avoid clashing with the FA
Cup Final, but in theory we could visit the Emirates on Fri 16.05.2025, Sun
18.05.2025 or Mon 19.05.2025.
We did speculate on whether the rescheduling of the Arsenal versus Crystal
Palace game would have any bearing on when we faced The Gunners - that will
now take place on Wed 23.04.2025 so becomes irrelevant.
* The final PL games will all kick off at the same date and time
regardless of whether they are chosen for TV or not. Those TV selections
will be announced following the penultimate round of PL games.

Born Or Died:
1889 Arthur Metcalf born, Seaham.
(1909-12)
Inside right who began his career in
local league football and was playing for North Shields Athletic when United
paid £100 for his services in April 1909.
Arthur debuted in a 3-3 draw at Bradford City the following March and his first
goal for the club was struck against Bury at SJP in March of 1911.
Moving on to join Liverpool at the end of the 1911/12 season, United made a £50
profit on the deal and Metcalfe was a regular scorer for the Reds before
sustaining an injury against the mackems.
Returning to fitness he played on until Football League fixtures were suspended
due to WW1 in 1915, appearing thereafter in local Lancashire league games for
Liverpool.
Later transfers saw Arthur appear in the colours of Stockport County, Swindon
Town, Accrington Stanley, Aberdare Athletic and Norwich City.
Returning to Merseyside, Arthur worked as an Anfield gateman but passed away in
February 1936 after a short illness.

1890 Edwin Dutton born, Mittenwalde, Germany.(1910-12)
Serving FC Britannia and BFC
Preussen in Germany, centre forward Edwin was capped for Germany against
Hungary shortly before Newcastle encountered him during May 1909, as they
toured continental Europe.
However it took until August 1910 for Dutton to appear
for the club, in a practice game at Gallowgate.
Contemporary reports noted him as being:
"The son of an English athletic outfitter in business in Germany, who
came over specially from the Fatherland for the game and showed excellence at
centre, shooting with splendid accuracy".
Agreeing a contract at SJP in October of that year. Edwin featured at reserve
level and then joined United's end-of-season tour to Germany and Switzerland
in May 1911.
However he failed to carve out a place in the first team and returned to
Germany following a brief spell with Bristol City in 1912.
Arrested in Berlin during November 1914 and interned in Ruhleben civilian
detention camp, Edwin played football alongside internees including England
international Steve Bloomer (coaching in Germany at the outbreak of war) using
his family connections to provide strips and equipment for those games.
Returning to England in 1919 and marrying the daughter of Magpies trainer Jimmy
McPherson, Dutton coached Ipswich Town between 1927 and 1932, later working as
a chiropodist and masseur on Tyneside.
His death was recorded in Cheshire during May 1972.
1993 Death of Bobby Mitchell, 68.
(194-61). Gallowgate's wizard of the wing and quite simply one of our all-time greats.

What Else?
1893 Liverpool (h)

Celebrated Tyne oarsman Ralph Carr was guest of honour and performed a ceremonial
kick-off at Gallowgate.
Liverpool included ex-Newcastle East End
forward, Jock Smith. Just over a year later he'd joined the Magpies, via
Sheffield Wednesday.
Team: Whitton, Jeffrey,
Miller, Creilly, Graham, McKane, Reay, Crate, Thompson, Pattison, Collins.

48 hours after defeating the league leading mackems 1-0 at Goodison, Everton
lost by the same margin to Newcastle as Alex Gardner knocked home Tom Niblo's
early cross.
The Liverpool Mercury hack concluded that, "to say that the result
was a surprise to the crowd, is putting the fact mildly, but the better team
won, and Everton were vanquished solely on account of their wretchedly
indifferent efforts."
1905 Nottingham Forest (h)

This resounding victory kept United within a point of leaders Everton with four games left.
Forest goalscorer was ex-Magpie, Tom Niblo.
"There was no gainsaying the Northerners when once they made up their
mind to score", in the opinion of the Sporting Life
correspondent.
1908 Aston Villa (h)

This home defeat marked the only time that Noel Brown featured in the Magpies first team,
playing at outside right.
Defeat confirmed the end of Newcastle's title challenge, although Manchester United
had only needed to win one of their seven remaining games before kick-off.
"Newcastle's play was wretchedly poor and lackadaisical" recorded
one correspondent.
1911 Bradford City (a)

The Bantams took the honours in this dress rehearsal for the FA Cup Final
two weeks later - which would also go their way after a replay.
With one eye on that final, both sides made changes to their sides. Newcastle
rested a quartet of first-choice players (messrs Veitch McCracken, Rutherford
and Wilson), while Bradford stood down no less than five men.
1922 Cardiff City (a)

Division One
P36, 38pts, 9th/22
L.Davies(15)

Welsh international forward Len Davies scored the winning goal at Ninian

during one spell of first half pressure on the City goal.

The chance of promotion was all but lost with this home defeat in heavy
rain, as United
stuttered towards the end of the season.
Before kick-off, Magpies Captain Jimmy Denmark broadcast an appeal to the crowd
for volunteers to sign up for National Service, saying that:
"In any trial of strength that may take place, a draw is no good. We
have to win home and away."

Despite beating the Blades at Gallowgate, Newcastle were knocked out of the
League North Cup following a 0-4 loss at Bramall Lane in the first leg a
week earlier.
Mackem centre forward Johnny Spuhler scored the only goal of his
brief guest spell at SJP.

An eventful Easter Saturday at SJP saw old boy Albert Stubbins
forced off by injury in the 28th minute and outfield player Frank Houghton take
over in goal on 66 minutes for United, after Jack Fairbrother dislocated
an elbow.
Victory over the title-chasing Scousers left United with an outside chance of
finishing top themselves. However, the Magpies would have to be content with
fifth - three points ahead of eventual champions Portsmouth.

Newcastle went ahead when Vic Keeble flicked on a Len White corner and
ex-Toffees amateur George Hannah finished.
The home side soon levelled but were often caught out by an offside trap
that reduced the Good Friday crowd at Goodison Park to a slow handclap at one
point in proceedings.
Liverpool-born Hannah then centred for Keeble to head home the winner from
close range and end United's five game winless league run.

Following this hammering United had just three games to stave off relegation and
in the words of one reporter present, were "playing with the Second
Division look clearly stamped on them."

A three game losing sequence was ended in some style against the Millers,
with Barrie Thomas hitting his second hat-trick of the campaign.
Sadly though it was only witnessed by a sparse crowd that was less than a third
of that which had seen Leeds win 1-0 at Gallowgate in the previous home game, on
Good Friday.
1966 Everton (h)
0-0 (0-0)
Division One
P34, 29pts, 19th/22

Another precious point as newly-promoted United made a successful bid to
retain their top flight status - ultimately finishing in fifteenth spot.

Division One
P35, 42pts, 15th/22

It ended honours even at Joker Park - exactly eight years after the last top
flight derby at that ground.
The mackems badly needed a win to quell their relegation fears while United were
well on the way to securing mid-table obscurity.

A vital win that kept United out of the bottom four - the team finishing
19th that season being involved in a the play-off with three Division Two sides.
Kevin Drinkell gave the Canaries the lead but United levelled through Paul
Goddard shortly before half time.
The second half was all one way traffic, with Steve Bruce in the visitors
defence failing to stem the tide of goals, deflecting Gazza's shot and conceding
the penalty.

United remained deep in the relegation mire following their third successive

Defender Benny Kristensen debuted after his move from Danish side Aarhus, but
neither he nor his new colleagues could prevent a fine individual effort by David
Platt that won it.

30,717
Destined to remain the stuff of nightmares, as David Batty appeared to have
secured the points on his Ewood Park return to boost our title challenge.
And then a certain Graham Fenton appeared.
Prompted by fellow Geordie, Alan Shearer, the 71st minute substitute twice beat Shaka Hislop
late on, to leave Newcastle six points behind Manchester United with a game in hand.
An unbowed Kevin Keegan insisted that "It's definitely not over",
but coming just five days after our 3-4 Anfield loss, his side ultimately had just too
much ground to recover.

2006 Three late
goals saw the U18s beat Crewe Alexandra 3-1 at Little Benton - but the visitors left unsure whether they'd been to the North East or the North Pole,
after some incredible weather conditions.
The league game began in a downpour, continued in gathering
gloom and ended in driving snow, as the Railwaymens' points were well and
truly frozen.
Andy Carroll, Paul Huntington and James Troisi were all on target for United.
2010
The U18s drew 1-1 with Aston Villa at Villa Park
in the first leg of their FA Youth Cup semi-final in front of 2,457 fans.
Phil Airey's opener was cancelled out by Kofi Poyser but a questionable offside
flag then saw Brad Inman's effort ruled out.
That decision proved costly for United, who lost the second leg 0-1 at SJP.
2013 The U21s extended their unbeaten run to
seven matches with a deserved 2-0 home win over Norwich City. Brandon Miele and Michael Richardson
netted.

Newcastle's attempt at

as the Owls claimed a seasonal win double over the
Magpies.
Trailing 0-2 late on, United substitute
Aleksandar Mitrovic's shot was blocked and Jonjo Shelvey pit the rebound.
However, Shelvey drove his free kick from a dangerous position into the
Wednesday wall, ending any faint hopes of an undeserved point.

A 3-2 victory at the Bet365 Stadium sealed a promotion playoff place
for the U23s - but only after allowing hosts Stoke City to take a two goal first half lead.
A brace from Owen Bailey book-ending one from Yannick Toure turned the game
around, Bailey making amends for missing a spot-kick when his side were 0-1
down.

Chris Wood's
second half penalty gave Newcastle their fourth successive home win - drawing a line under a
demoralising run of three successive away defeats in the process.
The New Zealand international had
a first half effort
rightly ruled out for offside by a VAR review, but drew a foul from
Wolves 'keeper Jose Sa and then rammed the spot kick
into the Gallowgate End net. NUFC.com match report

their third victory in just six days and a fifth in succession;
regaining third place after Manchester United had fleetingly
occupied it.
0-1 down at the break - although that could have easily been 0-3

when Bees custodian David Raya diverted Joelinton's cross into his net and taking the lead minutes
later when Alexander Isak gloriously fired home. NUFC.com match report
