Latest:
Defender extension
details emerge

The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as was previously assumed.

It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or club.

The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014, making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015.

Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024, Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to training.

Manchester United (h)

The Magpies face the Red Devils in a 4.30pm kick-off at SJP on Sunday. It's live on Sky Sports.

Team:
Sven Botman, Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles remain unavailable, while Anthony Gordon is yet to recommence training since pulling out of the England squad last month and Joe Willock won't be allowed to feature in accordance with concussion protocols.

Joelinton and Dan Burn continue to walk the suspension tightrope, the Brazilian needing to avoid a booking in the next two games in order to evade a two game ban.

Blyth's favourite son meanwhile will miss out on a similar punishment assuming that doesn't pick up yellow cards in both of Newcastle's next two fixtures.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 7/10
The draw 16/5
MUFC win 17/5

U21s:
Citizen's test for Stiffs

With their place in the one-off playoff round confirmed,
Newcastle U21s play their final regular game of the PL2 season this coming Monday evening (7pm).

The opponents at the Joie Stadium are a Manchester City side who sit two points clear of their nearest challengers Fulham at the top of the table, enjoying a vastly superior goal difference over the Cottagers.

At the same time as City are hosting Newcastle in their last game, Fulham close out their fixtures against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

The Magpies are currently ninth but could end up anywhere between fifth and eleventh.

The top eight teams then host one additional playoff round game each against the sides finishing ninth to sixteenth, with the first place finisher hosting the sixteenth, second the fifteenth etc.

Those 16 teams won't be confirmed until after the final two regular games of the season take place on Friday week (18th).

Advance tickets are on sale now online here priced at £3 adults and £1 concessions. It's unclear whether walk-ups will be accepted on the night.

This will be the first time that any Newcastle side has played at City's purpose-built ground for development and Women's teams that opened in 2014.

Third time unlucky

Stoke City U18s  5  Newcastle U18s  3

Newcastle U18s were beaten for the first time away from home in 2025 on Saturday, losing a see-saw league encounter at Stoke's Clayton Wood Academy.

Enjoying 4-2 and 4-1 victories over the Potters already this season, the young Magpies found themselves two down at the interval; Charlie Wood heading home following 29th and 42nd minute corner kicks.

Joe Brayson's 58th minute effort reduced the arrears before Matheos Ferreira levelled six minutes later.

Back came the hosts and substitute Ryan Liu regained their lead on 71 minutes, only for United's Alex O'Donovan to restore parity within another six minutes.

The Magpies had no answer to Pedro Nzau's 79th minute goal however and a late penalty conversion from Lewis Bailey opened up a decisive two goal lead for Stoke.

Premier League:

Thanks for nothing

As we predicted, the Premier League have given two possible slots for the visit of Chelsea to SJP in May, depending on their European status.

Should Chelsea win their Conference League quarter-final against Legia Warsaw on Thu 10.04.2025 and Thu 17.04.2025, they will visit SJP for a Noon KO on Sunday May 11th

Should Chelsea lose their Conference League quarter-final against Legia Warsaw on Thu 10.04.2025 and Thu 17.04.2025, they will visit SJP for a 12.30pm KO on Saturday May 10th

Newcastle's confirmed PL games:

Wed 16.04.2025 Palace (h) 7.30pm Sky
Sat 19.04.2025 Aston Villa (a) 5.30pm Sky
Sat 26.04.2025 Ipswich Town (h) 3pm no TV

Sat 10.05.2025 tbc Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT
Sun 25.05.2025 Everton (h) 4pm TV tbc*

The date and KO time of one game remains tbc:

Sun 18.05.2025 tbc Arsenal (a) TV tbc (if any)

The deadline for confirming was last Friday, but as expected, nothing was forthcoming from the PL.

No PL games will be played on Sat 17.05.2025 to avoid clashing with the FA Cup Final, but in theory we could visit the Emirates on Fri 16.05.2025, Sun 18.05.2025 or Mon 19.05.2025.

We did speculate on whether the rescheduling of the Arsenal versus Crystal Palace game would have any bearing on when we faced The Gunners - that now takes place on Wed 23.04.2025 so becomes irrelevant.

* The final PL games will all kick off at the same date and time regardless of whether they are chosen for TV or not. Those TV selections will be announced following the penultimate round of PL games.

On This Day in History
9th April

Born Or Died:

1892 Thomas Lowes born, Walker.
(1910-14)

Inside forward acquired from Wallsend Park Villa for £25 in September 1910, debuting in a 1-2 defeat at Preston some 15 months later.

An occasional first team starter, Tommy's most prolific period in black and white saw him score three goals in as many games during January and February 1912.

He moved on however in June 1914 after managing just three competitive outings in the previous two seasons, Coventry City paying £50 for his services.

Later transfers took Tommy to Nuneaton Town, Caerphilly Town, Newport County and Yeovik & Petters United - joining the latter as a player/coach in 1926 and becoming the manager ahead of the 1928/29 season.

A similar progression saw him coach and then manage Barrow before taking charge of Walsall between 1937 and 1939.

Following World War 2, Lowes scouted for Arsenal before switching to Norwich City between 1961 and 1972.

His death was recorded on Tyneside during November 1973.

1930 Death of Alf Brown, 30.
(1927-28)
Inside left signed from Morton who failed to make a senior competitive appearance for United due to injury and illness. He sadly took his own life by drinking poison and was found on Largs beach.

1985
Death of Ernie Taylor, 59. (1942-51)
Born a mackem but died a Geordie. His back heel set up Jackie Milburn for a famous Wembley Cup Final goal in 1951.

1998 Jake Trodd born, Newcastle
(2014-16)

Full back blooded in United's penultimate U18 Premier League fixture of the 2013/14 season - a 1-2 defeat at Norwich City in April 2014.

Injury problems though meant that Jake's second outing was delayed until a visit to Wolves in February 2015.

Promoted to the U21 side for a 0-3 defeat by Fulham at Whitley Park during February 2016, he failed to win an extended contract and was released that summer.

Joining Newcastle Benfield, Trodd later played for Team Northumbria and Heaton Stannington.
