2024/25:
Manchester United (h):
Eddie in hospital

The club have confirmed that Eddie Howe was admitted to hospital late on Friday and will miss Sunday's game against Manchester United.

In a statement NUFC said:

"The Magpies' head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.

"Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.

"Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.

"Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James' Park on Sunday, supported by the club's first team staff."

Newcastle face the Red Devils in a 4.30pm kick-off at SJP on Sunday. It's live on Sky Sports.

Team:
Deputising for the hospitalised Eddie Howe, Jason Tindall spoke to the media on Friday. He confirmed that Anthony Gordon is now back in training and a possible inclusion in Sunday's squad.

Sven Botman, Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles remain unavailable and Joe Willock won't be allowed to feature in accordance with concussion protocols.

Joelinton and Dan Burn continue to walk the suspension tightrope, the Brazilian needing to avoid a booking in the next two games in order to evade a two game ban.

Blyth's favourite son meanwhile will miss out on a similar punishment, assuming that doesn't pick up yellow cards in both of Newcastle's next two fixtures.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 7/10
The draw 16/5
MUFC win 17/5

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, Ruben Amorim's side drew 2-2 away to Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday.

They've taken 17 PL points from a possible 45 away from Old Trafford this season, but conceded just 16 goals - bettered only by Arsenal (14).

Premier League:
Sunday date for
Chelsea looms

Thursday evening saw Chelsea win the first leg of their Conference League quarter-final tie, defeating Legia Warsaw 3-0 in Poland.

Assuming no unforeseen turnaround in next Thursday's second leg, Enzo Maresca's side will advance to the last four, meaning that their Premier League visit to SJP will be played at Noon on Sunday May 11th

Confirmation of the date and KO time of United's away game against Arsenal is still to be announced by the Premier League. Their own published deadline for doing so was Friday April 4th.....

No PL games will be played on Sat 17.05.2025 to avoid clashing with the FA Cup Final that day, but in theory Newcastle could visit the Emirates on Fri 16.05.2025, Sun 18.05.2025 or Mon 19.05.2025.

2025/26:
Singapore date set

Newcastle have confirmed their first friendly fixture ahead of next season, facing Arsenal at the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday 27th July.

The kick-off time isn't listed by NUFC, but Arsenal now have it as 7.30pm local time (12.30pm BST).

This match is part of an overseas pre-season tour, with further stops still to be announced, amid claims of possible visits to Hong Kong and South Korea.

Tickets for what is billed as the Singapore Festival of Football go on sale on Friday 25th April - further details are awaited.

The venue holds 55,000 and is built on the site of the former National Stadium - visited by United in August 1996 when Kevin Keegan's side scored five goals without reply to defeat an S League Select XI.

The Gunners face AC Milan at the same ground four days earlier and following our game, move on to Hong Kong for a kickabout against Spurs four days later.

The Serie A side meanwhile face Liverpool in Hong Kong on July 26th.

2025/26:
Milestone reached:
more funds needed

Former Magpie Alan Shearer appeared on BBC Breakfast earlier this week here as the charity fundraising efforts of his foundation smashed through the £7m barrier.

Those funds helped establish
The Alan Shearer Centre, offering support to over 5,000 people in the region with profound disabilities and acute sensory impairments.

The running costs of that facility have now rocketed from £250K to £320K annually, meaning that Wor Al is now calling for additional support from the public:

"I founded the Alan Shearer Foundation to make a real difference to the lives of people with a wide range of abilities and complex needs.

"To keep the activity centre free for our members, we now need to raise an additional £70,000 every year.

"The funds raised enable our members and their families to access life-enhancing therapies like hydrotherapy and sensory play without increased strain on family finances.

"Every donation, fundraising event and contribution — however big or small — helps us to maintain and grow these vital facilities and ensures that people get the care and experiences they deserve.

"We need to do more if we are to help and support families who require specialist care facilities.”

U21s:
Citizen's test for Stiffs

With their place in the one-off playoff round confirmed,
Newcastle U21s play their final regular game of the PL2 season this coming Monday evening (7pm).

The opponents at the Joie Stadium are a Manchester City side who sit two points clear of their nearest challengers Fulham at the top of the table, enjoying a vastly superior goal difference over the Cottagers.

At the same time as City are hosting Newcastle in their last game, Fulham close out their fixtures against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

The Magpies are currently ninth but could end up anywhere between fifth and 11th.

The top eight teams then host one additional playoff round game each against the sides finishing ninth to sixteenth, with the first place finisher hosting the 16th, second the 15th etc.

Those 16 teams won't be confirmed until after the final two regular games of the season take place on Friday week (18th).

Advance tickets are on sale now online here priced at £3 adults and £1 concessions. It's unclear whether walk-ups will be accepted on the night.

This will be the first time that any Newcastle side has played at City's purpose-built ground for development and Women's teams that opened in 2014.

PS: U21 midfielder Ellis Stanton has confirmed his release by United via social media in recent days.

Defender extension
details emerge

The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as was previously assumed.

It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or club.

The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014, making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015.

Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024, Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to training.

Born Or Died:

1923 Death of Billy Reid, 47.
(1899-1900)

1975 Tony Dinning born, Wallsend.
(1990-94)

Midfielder who came to SJP from Wallsend Boys Club but failed to make the step up from junior/reserve football to the first XI.

Joining Stockport County in 1994 after his release, Tony made over 200 appearances for the Edgeley Park side in a six-year stint.

A year at Wolves was followed by a loan to Wigan that was made permanent, Dinning leaving midway through the 2004/05 season with the Latics en route to the Premiership.

During his time at Wigan though he was loaned out on several occasions, also appearing for Stoke City, Walsall, Blackpool, Ipswich Town and Bristol City.

Moving to Ashton Gate permanently on a free, Dinning was soon out on loan again - this time at Port Vale - before making a return to Stockport County in 2006.

Next up was a transfer to Chester City in 2007, with Dinning joining Grays Athletic on loan in early 2009 after losing his place in the starting XI at the Deva.

With a brief trial at Inverness Caledonian Thistle having come to nothing, Dinning returned to Tyneside and played out the remainder of the season at Gateshead.

Later appearing for Hednesford Town and Stafford Rangers, Tony ended his playing career at Bridgnorth Town and then coached Shrewsbury Town's U16 side.

1982 Gary Caldwell born Stirling, Scotland. (2000-04)

Joining Newcastle with elder brother Steve as a youngster, the pair both appeared as schoolboys for Celtic and Gary had actually played for Scotland as a striker - scoring against England U15s.

Both joined the Academy as central defenders and developed under the guidance of Director Alan Irvine and reserve team boss and fellow Scot Tommy Craig.

While Gary was the better ball player of the two, his chance in the first team never came - although a full international debut for Scotland came in 2002.

He did partner his brother once in a Magpies first team game, in a testimonial at West Bromwich Albion in May 2001.

Gary did play competitively for Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry City and Derby County and departed from SJP in January 2004.

A brief trial at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem came to nothing and he returned to Easter Road until 2006, when moving to Celtic.

Two SPL titles and a Scottish FA Cup medal followed as well as regular appearances in the Champions League - during which he played as a holding midfielder.

2009 saw him move to Premier League Wigan Athletic - wisely opting not to join the smoggies after a transfer was agreed and he underwent a medical.

Facing United regularly during the following three seasons while he was a Wigan regular, Gary was an unused substitute as his side won the FA Cup by beating Manchester City at Wembley in May 2013.

However the Latics also suffered relegation and he had surgery on a hip problem that summer - for the second time in three years.

Retiring in 2015 after failing to recover fully, Caldwell quickly progressed from coaching duties to succeed Malky Mackay as Latics manager - successfully avoiding relegation to League One.

A downturn in form saw Gary exit in October 2016, later taking charge of Chesterfield and Partick Thistle, assisted at Firhill by SJP old boy Brian Kerr.

He made a surprise return to Newcastle in 2021 as interim U23s boss, but after just a few games was off to Hibernian to work as assistant manager to Shaun Maloney.

That lasted until April 2022, Gary returning to management the following October when taking charge of Exeter City - and loaning Joe White from Newcastle.

Despite being without a trio of players on international duty (see below) and three more missing ahead of the following weekend's FA Cup Final, United collected both points from an average display.

Defeat was another nail in the coffin for Chelsea, who slid closer to relegation and would go down alongside Boro on goal average from Nottingham Forest.

After David Barton's opener following a corner, Gary Shelton scored his first goal for Wednesday since joining on loan from Aston Villa, beating Kevin Carr from close range.

With the score at 1-0, Paul Gascoigne was sent off for punching Robert Hopkins, who had continually fouled and blocked him.

However United were in no mood to let relegation-haunted City back in and Peter Beardsley in particular drove them forward beating David Seaman from an impossible angle to double the lead and then cracking another superb shot off the goal frame.
