Devils dispatched
Newcastle 4
Manchester United 1
 Match
action is online here A
fourth successive Premier League victory continued Newcastle's charge for
Champions League qualification on Sunday, a comprehensive dismantling of Manchester United
propelling them into fourth place.
Overseen by coach Jason Tindall in the absence of the hospitalised Eddie
Howe, the Magpies boasted with an unchanged line-up for the fifth game in
succession.
Alexander Isak teed up Sandro Tonali to volley past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir
after 24 minutes, the Premier League debutant then denying our top scorer a
second goal that would have reflected the balance of play.
However a rare venture into the home box on 37 minutes saw Diogo Dalot play
in Alejandro Garnacho, who steered his low shot beyond Nick Pope and into
the net.
The hosts redoubled their efforts after the interval and ruthless
pressing on the visitor's goal was rewarded within five minutes of the
restart.
Bruno Guimaraes found Tino Livramento
on the left just inside the opposition half and the full back who spent much
of the game in an attacking role shimmied past Dalot's before laying a
low pass across the six yard box that reached Jacob Murphy beyond the back
post.
His astute layoff back across goal was met by the advancing Harvey Barnes
who converted from close range at the Gallowgate End.
The winger was celebrating his third goal of the week quarter of an hour
later, capitalising on Noussair Mazraoui's stumble and setting off for goal before supplying a
memorable finish.
And on a day when Wor Flags paid tribute to Kevin Keegan, Bruno Guimaraes
won his one on one with Bayindir in a manner reminiscent of KK's debut
strike against QPR's Peter Hucker back in August 1982.
That rounded off the scoring
and sealed Newcastle's first league double over the Old Trafford side in 94
years; Anthony Gordon returning from injury and suspension to appear in the
closing stages.
Next up for the black and whites is their game in hand against Crystal
Palace at Gallowgate this Wednesday night, where another maximum point haul
would lift them up to third - five points clear of the team in sixth place.
Team: Pope, Trippier (Krafth 78), Livramento,
Schar, Burn, Joelinton (Longstaff 85), Tonali, Guimaraes (Miley 85), Barnes,
J.Murphy (Gordon 78), Isak (Wilson 78).
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Targett, Neave, Osula.
Booked: None
Goals: Tonali 24, Barnes 49,64, Guimaraes 77
A fourth successive PL appearance without a caution meant that Joelinton
remains on nine bookings and needs to avoid censure against Crystal Palace
in order to avoid an automatic two game ban.
The threat of a similar punishment for Dan Burn has now passed, with him on
eight bookings but just one game away from the 32 game seasonal cutoff
point.
The nearest Joelinton came to censure was with the game stopped and his
substitution indicated; Joe arguing with Manuel Ugarte as Bruno frog-marched
him from the field and indicating his willingness to continue the exchange
with the Uruguayan off the pitch....
MUFC:
Bayindir, Yoro, Lindelof, Mazraoui (Shaw 78), Amass (Dirgu 55), Eriksen,
Ugarte, Dalot, Fernandes (Mainoo 82), Garnacho (Mount 55), Zirkzee (Hojlund
55).
Subs n/u: Casemiro, Heaton, Heaven, Maguire.
Booked: Ugarte, Yoro
Goal: Garnacho 37
Crowd: 52,252. The visitors took the full 3,200
places in L7 but some remained unoccupied.
Ex-Magpies in attendance included Nicky Butt, David Ginola, Rob Lee and Alan
Shearer. England boss Thomas Tuchel was also present.
Although the man in question had been on Tyneside less than 48 hours
before, Kevin Keegan wasn't present as
Wor Flags staged a tribute to Kevin Keegan across three side
of SJP before kick-off.
Jason Tindall said:
"I said to the players before the game we need a performance the manager would
be proud of.
"I had a message from him
just before I've come up to do the press congratulating the team and
performance and work from everyone.
"He was able to watch the
game and I'm sure that performance will put a smile on his face.
"I’ve just seen a message from him before I came to do the press,
congratulating the performance from everybody and from the team. He was able
to watch it, and I’m sure that would have lifted his spirits.
"He trusted the decision we’d make, we’ve been working together for
a long time. He was able to communicate earlier on in the week, then put his
trust in everyone to put in a performance he’d be proud of, and the boys
delivered.
"We had to make a couple of tweaks at half-time,
we were a few yards off on our press. The lads went back out and
delivered their tactical executions superbly well.
"I'm super proud of the players. Not
surprised because we've got a fantastic group of players - we've
got some great leaders within that.
"It's times like this when the manager is not there, when he's
not there to lead the team, you have to step up individually and
collectively.
"Everybody certainly did
that today, so really, really proud of the players to go out and
deliver the performance that they did today against a good
Manchester United team.
"I think the team probably picked itself in recent
performances.
"Eddie put his trust in
myself and the work and the rest of the support staff to go out and
deliver the performance. He trusted that if decisions needed to be
made and tweaks needed to be made, that we'd make the right choices
and make the right decisions.
"Thankfully, that happened
today and as I say, I'm sure he'll be really proud of it.”
Asked about Howe's
condition:
"No updates. I haven't really had the opportunity to speak to him
properly."
Tindall oversaw the side with coach Graeme Jones for the second time, the
pair previously taking charge in November 2021 for a 3-3 home draw with Brentford.
That came about when Howe tested positive for COVID ahead of his first game
as Magpies boss. He watched the game on TV while isolating in a nearby
hotel.
Referee:

United following Leicester City, Spurs, Wolves, Southampton and Nottingham
Forest in losing to us both home and away.

goals to his name.
Harvey Barnes made it eight PL goals for the season,

The former Fox now has 13 as a Magpie, taking him level with
Hatem Ben Arfa. He's now two short of a PL half century, adding in
his 35 efforts for Leicester City.

Sao Paulo U19s 5
Newcastle U19s 0
United U19s endured a difficult afternoon in the Cotton Bowl on Sunday, as
they commenced their Dallas Cup participation with defeat by Sao Paulo.
The Brazilian side were beginning the defence of their Super Group title and
went ahead within 90 seconds, only to then concede a seventh minute penalty
that Kasey Wooster dragged wide of the target.
Sao Paulo then doubled their lead after 16 minutes in blazing sunshine and
it was 0-3 by the 38th minute.
Into the second period and a free kick conversion from distance increased
United's agony and it was 0-5 on the hour, the scoring thankfully complete
at that point.

Citizen's
test for Stiffs

With their place in the one-off
playoff round confirmed,
Newcastle U21s play their final regular game of the PL2 season on Monday evening (7pm).
The opponents at the Joie Stadium are a Manchester City
side who sit two points clear of their nearest challengers Fulham at
the top of the table, enjoying a vastly superior goal difference
over the Cottagers.
At the same time as City are hosting Newcastle in their last game,
Fulham close out their fixtures against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood
Park.
The Magpies are currently ninth but
could end up anywhere between fifth and 11th.
The top eight teams then host
one additional playoff round game each against the sides finishing
ninth to sixteenth, with the first place finisher hosting the
16th, second the 15th etc.
Those 16 teams won't be confirmed until after the final two regular
games of the season take place on Friday.
Advance tickets were available online here
but went off sale over the weekend. It's unclear whether walk-ups will be
accepted on the night.
This will be the first time that any Newcastle side has played at
City's purpose-built ground for development and Women's teams that
opened in 2014.

Milestone reached:
more funds needed
Former Magpie Alan Shearer appeared on BBC Breakfast this
week
here as the
charity fundraising efforts of his foundation smashed through the £7m
barrier.
Those funds helped establish The Alan
Shearer Centre, offering support to over 5,000 people
in the region with profound disabilities and acute sensory impairments.
The running costs of that facility have now rocketed from £250K to £320K
annually, meaning that Wor Al is now calling for additional support from the
public:
"I founded the Alan Shearer Foundation to make a real difference to
the lives of people with a wide range of abilities and complex needs.
"To keep the activity centre free for our members, we now need to raise
an additional £70,000 every year.
"The funds raised enable our members and their families to access
life-enhancing therapies like hydrotherapy and sensory play without
increased strain on family finances.
"Every donation, fundraising event and contribution — however big or
small — helps us to maintain and grow these vital facilities and ensures
that people get the care and experiences they deserve.
"We need to do more if we are to help and support families who require
specialist care facilities.”

Defender extension
details emerge
The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a
contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as
was previously assumed.
It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last
year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or
club.
The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014,
making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015.
Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024,
Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to
training.

On This Day in History |

13th April |
|
Born Or Died:
1876 Robert Smyth McColl born, Glasgow.
(1901-04)

Centre forward signed from amateur side Queens Park in his
native Glasgow, after beginning his career with Benmore.
A prolific scorer at international level, Bob had claimed hat tricks for
Scotland against Wales, Ireland & England and had been pursued by a host
of English clubs.
He was eventually tempted to join United when they offered him £5 a week
wages - £1 more than rivals Liverpool.
That financial astuteness also saw Bob sink his signing-on fee into his
brother's business - which at the time consisted of a sweet manufacturing
business and three shops.
Establishing a chain of stores under the RS McColl banner that at one point
numbered 150 led to his nickname "Toffee Bob".
Netting with a penalty on his debut in a 3-0 home win over Manchester City in
November 1901, his final senior outing for the Magpies came in April 1904.
A return to Scotland with Rangers preceded a second stint at Queens Park,
during which he made his thirteenth and final Scotland appearance - having
earned one cap while a Magpie. In total, he scored 13 goals.
Bob bowed out of football on a high note in 1910, scoring six goals in a
league game at Hampden Park against Port Glasgow in what was his final home
game for Queens.
Losing much of their wealth in the stock market crash of the late 1920s, the
McColls sold out to Cadbury's in 1931.
They remained involved in its day to day running however and in Bob's case
played on for the works football team, albeit in goal.
Bob passed away in November 1959 and is buried with his brother in the family
grave at Cathcart Cemetery on Clydeside.

1929 Tom Mulgrew born, Motherwell, Scotland. (1952-54)

Spotted playing in his native Scotland for Clelland Juniors,
striker Tommy moved to Greenock Morton before trying his luck in England with
Northampton Town.
Joining Newcastle in a £9,000 deal during October 1952, Mulgrew made his
debut in a 2-0 victory at Blackpool a month later.
Ending his first season by playing for United at the Coronation Cup in
Glasgow, Tommy was to play just once more; netting in a 1-2 home loss to
Wolves the following October.
Failing to oust Ivor Broadis and Reg Davies in the Magpies first team, Mulgrew
signed for Southampton in the summer of 1954 in a joint £12,000 deal with
Bill Foulkes.
Scoring on his Saints debut after only 15 seconds, Tommy remained at The Dell
until 1962 when he quit in a contractual row.
Playing on at Aldershot for another three seasons, Mulgrew ended his career
with Andover. Returning to the Northampton area, Tommy worked in the steel
industry.
His death was recorded in January 2016.

1936 Albert Franks born, Boldon.
(1953-60)

Joining
the Magpies in 1953 following a spell at Roker Park as an amateur, the half
back captained the Durham County youth side.
National Service (in the RAF) delayed Albert's arrival in the United first
team and his senior debut didn't come until a 1-4 loss at Luton Town
during February 1957.
Albert is remembered for his long throws and for also breaking
up a training ground spat between Bob Stokoe and Jimmy Scoular by sitting on
the latter!
All four of his senior competitive goals came in high-scoring encounters
during 1958; a 2-3 loss at Blackpool and 4-1 home victory over Manchester City
in April, a 5-6 defeat away to Chelsea in September and a 4-3 success at
Preston that October.
The appointment of Charlie Mitten as United boss limited his
opportunities at Gallowgate, but Glasgow Rangers paid £6,500 for him in March
1960, two months after what proved to be his final Newcastle appearance.
Subsequently loaned out to Morton, Albert joined Lincoln City in 1961 before a
further stint in Scotland with Queen of the South.
His final football post was as the player/ manager of Scarborough, before
joining Durham Constabulary at the age of 29 (he was a police cadet in the
1950s).
Spending many of his 22 years in the job with the CID in Chester-le-Street,
Albert turned out for the police team and also donned his cricketing whites
for Boldon Colliery.
After retiring from the force, Albert became a private
security consultant, living in Vigo near Birtley. He also served as
President of Washington Cricket Club before passing away during June 2017.
Born of Methodist parents, Albert was a lifelong teetotaller ("I
smelt beer once and it was disgusting. I certainly didn't want it in my
mouth.")

1978 Paul Barrett born, Newcastle.
(1993-99)
Brought up close to SJP, midfielder Paul attended Rutherford
school and played for Montagu Boys and Walker Central Juniors before Newcastle
signed him and team mate Paul Brayson on associate schoolboy forms during
October 1993.
Recipient of a Rising Star award from Sport Newcastle in 1994, "Bazza"
moved up to the reserves and collected a Northumberland Senior Cup winner's
medal in 1995.
Representing England at U18 level the following year alongside the likes of
Emile Heskey and future Magpie coach Stephen Clemence, Paul's progress was
affected by United's decision not to enter a reserve competition in 1996/97.
That was corrected the following season - albeit at a lower level - and he
remained with the reserves until his release in 1999.
Following a brief trial at York City, Paul joining Wrexham permanently that
April - along with Magpies team mate Stuart Elliott (who was signed on loan).
Barrett played over 130 games for the Dragons before leaving the Racecourse
Ground on a free transfer in 2005.
After returning to his native North East, he appeared for Blyth Spartans,
Gateshead and Dunston Federation Brewery.
Paul's son Ryan later played in defence for Newcastle at junior and
reserve level.
1998 Yannick Aziakonou born, Lomé, Togo. (2015-18)
Youngster who attended St. Cuthbert's High School in Denton
Burn before gaining an Academy scholarship during 2015.
Yannick made his U18 debut at right back in a 0-3 home defeat by the mackems
at Little Benton that September.
Joining Northern League side Ashington on a short loan in March 2016, he
remained part of United's U18 setup the following season and featured in a
reserve friendly at Hebburn Town during April 2017.
A belated competitive U23 debut followed in the Northumberland Senior Cup
against Blyth Town that December, but Yannick was part of a mass
clearout of youth and reserve players during June 2018.
He later played for Blyth Spartans, Seaton Delaval, Dunston UTS, Newcastle
Blue Star, Ashington, Consett and Alnwick Town.

The three points almost crowned Newcastle as Champions - only an unlikely set of

Nolan netted for the fourth game running as United
racked up a sixth successive victory and made it 14 games without defeat.

2011 Much debate was prompted by a supposedly accidental TV outburst from
Anfield apologist, Phil Thompson, regarding an agreement to sell Magpie defender
Jose Enrique to Liverpool in the summer.
Alan Pardew responded by saying
that:
"There’s definitely no deal between the clubs – 100%. He’s under
contract here until next summer, and we hope to open talks on a new deal as soon
as possible.
"That’s where we are. We want to keep our best players, and Jose’s one
of them. As far as anything being a done deal, that’s not true. We want Jose
to stay. Nothing’s changed."
'Pinocchio' was correct: Enrique following Andy Carroll to Anfield the
following August.
