Crystal Palace (h)

Wednesday night sees Newcastle play their PL game in hand, hosting the Eagles in a 7.30pm kick-off at SJP live on Sky Sports.

With Eddie Howe still unavailable, the Magpies will again be led by Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones - with the duo also standing in for Saturday's visit to Aston Villa.

Team:
Lewis Hall, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles remain unavailable but Joe Willock is back in contention after his enforced absence due to concussion.

Were Joelinton to avoid a booking against Palace, the threat of an automatic two match ban for reaching 10 cautions in the Premier League would be lifted.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 4/5
The draw 14/5
CPFC win 16/5

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

CPFC: Eddie Nketiah and Marc Guehi will both be available for selection following suspension.

Oliver Glasner's side lost 2-5 at Manchester City on Saturday - their first PL away defeat since October, ending a run that included six wins and four draws.

Referee:
Darren England - a third appointment so far this season involving the Magpies for the official from Doncaster, following our 1-1 PL draw at Selhurst Park and the 3-0 PL home victory over Wolves.

Several media outlets reported on Tuesday that Newcastle had reached agreement to sign Antonio Cordero from Spanish side Malaga.

Spanish youth international Cordero debuted for Malaga during the 2023/24 season when they gained promotion from the third tier and has featured regularly in the Segunda Division this time round, scoring five times.

Citizen's arrest

Manchester City U21s  4  Newcastle U21s  0

Newcastle's U21 side slipped to their first defeat in five PL2 games on Monday, as league leaders Manchester City confirmed top spot ahead of the season-ending playoff series of fixtures.

United debuted at City's purpose-built development stadium with a top 16 place already assured, needing three points to stand any chance of finishing in the top eight and gaining home advantage in the playoffs.

However those hopes began to dwindle after just six minutes, when Ashton Muir's cross from the City left struck visiting defender
Cathal Heffernan and flew past Magpies goalkeeper Adam Harrison.

There was almost an instant equaliser when Sean Neave was through on goal but after the nudging the ball past the onrushing Spike Brits it was cleared off the line by Jamal Simpson-Pusey.

City doubled their lead after 15 minutes when Justin Oboavwodou, who Harrison had already been twice denied, turned on the edge of the box and fired in.

A third followed in the 29th minute when a simple ball from Jaden Heskey found Divin Mubama who ran unchallenged towards goal and clipped home.

Five minutes after the interval Garang Kuol had a great chance for United, but screwed his first time shot from the corner of the six yard area past the far post.

A rerun of City's third goal on 56 minutes from closer in then made it 0-4; Heskey finding Mubama on the edge of the box and the striker supplying a similar finish.

Ryan McAidoo hit the bar two minutes later as the home side piled on the pressure, but with the job done the hosts eased off and made a trio of replacements.

Newcastle enjoyed their best moments of the game in the latter part of the second period but were unable to claim a consolation goal - an amazing passage of play on 71 minutes seeing a trio of goalbound efforts from Kuol, Anthony Munda and Neave all blocked.

City must wait until the final games of the season on Friday to learn their opponents, with several teams still in with a chance of finishing in 16th place.

A finishing position of ninth for Newcastle though won't change, with the structured draw meaning that they will travel to the eighth-placed team.

That will be Arsenal, with the game set to take place over the weekend of April 26th. That's a repeat of the PL2 game played in February, when the Gunners ran out 4-1 winners at Boreham Wood's Meadow Park - which is where the playoff game will also be staged.

The playoffs then continue on or around successive weekends until the final two teams meet to contest the playoff final trophy - a trophy currently held by Spurs, who also finished top of PL in 2023/24.

All playoff ties must be concluded at the first time of asking, via extra time and then penalties if required.

Dallas
defeat

Sao Paulo U19s  5  Newcastle U19s  0

United U19s endured a difficult afternoon in the Cotton Bowl on Sunday, as they commenced their Dallas Cup participation with defeat by Sao Paulo.

The Brazilian side were beginning the defence of their Super Group title and went ahead within 90 seconds, only to then concede a seventh minute penalty that Kasey Wooster dragged wide of the target.

Sao Paulo then doubled their lead after 16 minutes in blazing sunshine and it was 0-3 by the 38th minute.

Into the second period and a free kick conversion from distance increased United's agony and it was 0-5 on the hour, the scoring thankfully complete at that point.

Sunday date for
Chelsea looms

Thursday evening saw Chelsea win the first leg of their Conference League quarter-final tie, defeating Legia Warsaw 3-0 in Poland.

Assuming no unforeseen turnaround in this Thursday's second leg, Enzo Maresca's side will advance to the last four, meaning that their Premier League visit to SJP will be played at Noon on Sunday May 11th

Confirmation of the date and KO time of United's away game against Arsenal is still to be announced by the Premier League. Their own published deadline for doing so was Friday April 4th.....

No PL games will be played on Sat 17.05.2025 to avoid clashing with the FA Cup Final that day, but in theory Newcastle could visit the Emirates on Fri 16.05.2025, Sun 18.05.2025 or Mon 19.05.2025.

2025/26:
Singapore date set

Newcastle have confirmed their first friendly ahead of next season, facing Arsenal at the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday 27th July.

The kick-off time isn't listed by NUFC, but Arsenal now have it as 7.30pm local time (12.30pm BST).

This match is part of an overseas pre-season tour, with further stops still to be announced, amid claims of possible visits to Hong Kong and South Korea.

Tickets for what is billed as the Singapore Festival of Football go on sale on Friday 25th April - further details are awaited.

The venue holds 55,000 and is built on the site of the former National Stadium - visited by United in August 1996 when Kevin Keegan's side scored five goals without reply to defeat an S League Select XI.

The Gunners face AC Milan at the same ground four days earlier and following our game, move on to Hong Kong for a kickabout against Spurs four days later.

The Serie A side meanwhile face Liverpool in Hong Kong on July 26th.

2025/26:
Milestone reached:
more funds needed

Former Magpie Alan Shearer appeared on BBC Breakfast last week here as the charity fundraising efforts of his foundation smashed through the £7m barrier.

Those funds helped establish The Alan Shearer Centre, offering support to over 5,000 people in the region with profound disabilities and acute sensory impairments.

The running costs of that facility have now rocketed from £250K to £320K annually, meaning that Wor Al is now calling for additional support from the public:

"I founded the Alan Shearer Foundation to make a real difference to the lives of people with a wide range of abilities and complex needs.

"To keep the activity centre free for our members, we now need to raise an additional £70,000 every year.

"The funds raised enable our members and their families to access life-enhancing therapies like hydrotherapy and sensory play without increased strain on family finances.

"Every donation, fundraising event and contribution — however big or small — helps us to maintain and grow these vital facilities and ensures that people get the care and experiences they deserve.

"We need to do more if we are to help and support families who require specialist care facilities.”

Latest:
Defender extension
details emerge

The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as was previously assumed.

It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or club.

The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014, making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015.

Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024, Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to training.

On This Day in History
15th April

Born Or Died:

1962 Bert-Jan Janssen born, Enschede, Netherlands. (1984)

During Newcastle's 1983/84 Division Two promotion season, a tip-off took them to the Netherlands and this striking prospect from lower league club SC Enschede.

Bert-Jan spent a week on trial with United during that season and seemed set to sign on a permanent basis in May 1984.

However no deal was done and the player instead joined Twente Enschede, debuting for them in September of that year and appearing frequently in midfield.

After two seasons at Twente and a spell at De Graafschap, Bert returned to SC Enschede and combined playing with managing a mens clothes shop in the Dutch city of Oldenzaal.

1981 Pablo Facundo Bonvin
born, Concepcion, Argentina.
(2000-01)

Midfielder signed on a year-long loan from Boca Juniors in his homeland who failed to impress club officials sufficiently during his reserve team outings.

Rather than returning to Argentina though, Bonvin went on trial to Sheffield Wednesday and played 30 times for the Owls, scoring five goals in his season at Hillsborough.

Bonvin returned to Tyneside as part of the Wednesday reserve side in February 2002, scoring in a 1-1 draw at Kingston Park.

A return to Argentina with Boca was then followed by transfer to Argentinos Juniors, Quilmes, Argentinos Juniors, Platense and finally in Ecuador with Universidad Católica del Ecuador, where he retired in 2008.

1985 Death of Samuel Weaver, 76.
(1929-36)

An FA Cup winner with Newcastle against Arsenal in 1932, Weaver scored at Highbury on his debut and netted against Aston Villa in his first SJP outing.

1986 Sylvain Marveaux born, Vannes, France. (2011-16)

Left-sided midfielder who signed a five year deal with Newcastle on a Bosman free in July 2011, following the expiration of his contract with French side, Rennes.

A former French U21 international, Marveaux joined Rennes since the age of 15 and made his first team debut in 2006.

However, his last game for the club was against Brest in November 2010, after which it was decided that a groin injury that had sidelined him earlier that season would require surgery.

A mooted move to Liverpool in 2011 was claimed to have broken down amid concerns raised at a medical, but the player was adamant that no suitable deal could be struck with the Anfield club.

Debuting in a pre-season friendly away to Kansas City in July 2011, Sylvain had his first taste of SJP when introduced at half time in the home game against Fiorentina.

However, that was called off just after the hour mark and Marveaux's Magpies career was to be similarly curtailed by November.

Making his competitive bow in the Carling Cup at Scunthorpe, Sylvain's senior starts were restricted to that competition and five brief Premier League substitute outings.

Handed his first start for the visit of Everton to Tyneside on Bonfire night, he was forced off early in the second half and confirmed as requiring surgery on both hip and groin.

Treated at the Colorado clinic of Doctor Richard Steadman where Alan Shearer, Michael Owen and Craig Bellamy had all previously undergone procedures while at Newcastle, Marveaux had returned to light training by his 26th birthday.

He then appeared regularly in the Premier and Europa League for United and grabbed a goal in both competitions - at home against Maritimo and away to Arsenal.

However, the 2013/14 season saw Sylvain remain on the first team fringes following an apparent fallout with Alan Pardew.

Two Premier League starts, two more in the League Cup and eight substitute outings made it a disappointing campaign, with the creative midfield vacancy caused by the mid-season sale of Yohan Cabaye never entrusted to Marveaux.

Excluded from first team training and not selected for the club's pre-season tour of New Zealand, it came as no shock when French Ligue 1 side Guingamp completed a season-long loan deal for Sylvain.

Marveaux's contribution to 2015/16 amounted to four reserve appearances and a penalty in the U21 League Cup defeat at Everton.

He was released by the club in May 2016 and by July had joined FC Lorient. In January 2019 he was sent on loan to AS Nancy for the remainder of the season and scored five times in nine appearances.

Sylvain signed for USL Championship side Charlotte Independence in June 2021, joining his close friend Gabriel Obertan, but was released in December of that year.

Remaining in the USA, Marveaux settled in Miami and was involved in establishing a youth academy.

Ahead of their maiden season of League participation, Newcastle faced a number of top flight sides in practice matches.

Albion won the toss and opted to play down the substantial slope at Gallowgate with the wind in their favour, ending the first half a goal to the good.

However things were substantially different after the break, United setting about an Albion side described as "miserably poor" by one reporter present.

Team: Whitton, Jeffrey, Miller, Creilly, Graham, McKane, Reay Crate, Sorley, Collins, Wallace.

Newcastle's heaviest-ever league defeat came in this final game of the season at Burton's Derby Turn ground - a short walk away from Albion's current home.

Ending their home programme with a 3-0 victory over Newton Heath the previous Saturday, United made just one change to their side at Burton the following Monday.

The Magpies staged a benefit match at Gallowgate for Northern Alliance side Trafalgar, who had re-branded as East End after the former club of that name moved from Heaton to SJP as United.

Despite fine weather on the Wednesday evening in question though, a tiny crowd gathered.

Bottom of the Alliance, East End resigned from the league ahead of the following season.

This was the last match played at The Owls' old Olive Grove ground (not far from Bramall Lane) and the meagre attendance and score did little to cheer up Wednesdayites.

Worse was to come for the relegated Owls however, when news broke that City rivals United had won the FA Cup that afternoon at The Crystal Palace.

United's first-ever appearance in the FA Cup Final ended in disappointing fashion, as their hopes of a league and cup double quickly evaporated.

After Harry Hampton had put the underdogs ahead, Jimmy Howie wasted an opportunity to grab an equaliser before half time.

And Villa scored again when Magpies 'keeper Jimmy Lawrence was unable to hold a shot and Hampton nipped in to net the rebound.

This was Newcastle's first final appearance at the Crystal Palace - a venue that they were to visit on five occasions without ever once winning there.

Draws against Barnsley in 1910 and Bradford 12 months proved to be their best results - with the cup win in a replay at Goodison and then lost at Old Trafford a year on.

Following a 6-1 home victory over Stoke City the previous Monday, Arsenal were in prolific scoring form again at Highbury.

Hitting a brace against the Potters, Peter Goring went one better against United as the Magpies wore their FA Cup Final kit of orange shirts and white shorts.

United were without Jackie Milburn, in Glasgow as twelfth man for England in the home international against Scotland.

United staged another midweek floodlit friendly against top-flight Scottish opposition, following visits from Celtic and Airdrieonians.

However, overcast conditions forced the Magpies to switch the lights on before the first half - having originally planned only to flick the switch at the interval.

Team: Simpson, Cowell, Batty, Stokoe, Woollard, Crowe, White, Mulgrew, Milburn, Hannah, Mitchell.

1959 Stoke City Reserves visited SJP in a Central League fixture and played out a 3-3 draw.

The Tangerines ended a three match losing run with the victory that ultimately saw them avoid relegation at Newcastle's expense by a solitary point.

They were aided in their quest by some poor goalkeeping from Dave Hollins, who allowed Ray Parry's shot to bounce into the net.

The hosts fielded both 18 year old Gordon West and 46 year-old Stanley Matthews.

1963 Easter Monday saw 3,072 fans at SJP as Blyth Spartans and Ashington drew 1-1 in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final.

The two sides met again at Croft Park just over a month later, Blyth running out 1-0 winners on their own ground.

Referee Clive Thomas created controversy, ruling that a fourth minute effort by Geoff Nulty hadn't bounced down off the crossbar and over the goal line before Pat Jennings grabbed the ball.

United did go ahead for the first time in eight games when Mickey Burn crossed for Nulty, but both he and Jennings missed the ball which dropped into the net.

A first league victory in fifteen attempts would elude them though, as the Gunners roused themselves in the closing stages and peppered Mick Mahoney with shots.

Coach Peter Morris took charge, with manager Bill McGarry travelling to Holland to scout Sparta Rotterdam striker Ray Clarke playing against Ajax the day after.

Clarke would go on to sign for Ajax before belatedly becoming a Magpie in 1980.

A sunny day at Highbury was soon overshadowed by news of a major incident during the FA Cup Semi Final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest taking place at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium.

In pre-mobile phone days, those with radios began relaying claims of fatalities. News of the abandonment of the Semi Final was then relayed over the Highbury PA "due to crowd trouble", which triggered anti-Scouse chants, memories of Heysel in 1985 still fresh.

Durham-born Brian Marwood scrambled home the only goal of the game late on to hand United a fourth successive defeat and virtually confirm our relegation.

The only visiting player to enjoy the occasion was former Gunner Kenny Sansom, warmly welcomed back to his old stamping ground.

Sansom came close to opening the scoring with a shot that hit the goal frame and also had an effort disallowed at 0-0.

Youngster David Roche made his senior debut from the bench, while future Magpie coach Kevin Richardson was in the home XI.

The true scale of the Hillsborough disaster only became apparent after full time, with a first view of chilling TV footage bringing to mind scenes of crushing during Newcastle's visit to Spurs for an FA Cup tie in 1987.

Former and future Magpie Peter Beardsley played at Hillsborough, fellow Reds John Barnes and manager Kenny Dalglish subsequently following him to SJP.

A trio of Forest participants meanwhile would later join United:  Stuart Pearce plus loan duo Terry Wilson and Tommy Gaynor.

1992 The Reserves boosted their survival chances by defeating Bolton Wanderers 3-1 at SJP.

An own goal and Mick Quinn's brace put a strong line-up in the driving seat, aided by a 61st minute penalty save by Pavel Srnicek to deny Chic Charnley.

And as he had against Manchester United, Matt Ritchie netted to take another big scalp on the way to a top half finish.

Ritchie's future Magpie team mate Joe Willock made his Premier League bow for Arsenal.

2021 Details began to emerge of plans by the Premier League to allow limited home crowds before the end of the season, following a relaxation of COVID rules.

All PL clubs would play one home and one away game with fans present after the government's May 17th go-live date.

In Newcastle's case that would be the visit of Sheffield United to SJP and the season-closer away at Fulham.
