Premier League:
Unhappy birthday

Aston Villa  4  Newcastle  1

Newcastle's six game winning run came to an abrupt end at Villa Park on Saturday, soundly beaten by a Villa side who scored the first of their four goals in the opening seconds and hit the goal frame another three times.

Unai Emery's side were unbeaten in 15 Premier League home games and almost instantly went ahead; an Ollie Watkins shot taking a massive deflection off Fabian Schar and flying past stranded birthday boy Nick Pope.

Schar had scored twice in the corresponding game last season and headed an unchanged United level on 18 minutes from a Harvey Barnes cross.

It remained 1-1 at half time; Watkins denied by the woodwork either side of Newcastle's equaliser and only a low shot from Sandro Tonali to show for their efforts, despite winning a plentiful number of corner kicks.

The exertions of recent games looked to catch up with Jason Tindall's team after the break; the referee's denial of an optimistic penalty plea from Bruno causing the Magpies captain to crash into an opponent seconds later and join countryman Joelinton on a yellow card.

Play restarted with Watkins able to play in Ian Maatsen, who beat Pope from the left hand side of the box; the goalkeeper seemingly coming off his line but pausing, allowing the Villa defender to crack the ball past him.

Worse was to follow; newly-arrived substitute Jacob Ramsey seeing his cross from the left deflect in off Dan Burn from close range before fellow replacement Amadou Onana stylishly added a fourth from the edge of the box.

Ramsey then looked set to add a fifth goal for his side after tracking in from the left but pinged his effort beyond Pope and off the far post.

A sobering afternoon then, when a
talented Villa side deservedly took all three points after encouraging the press, but having the skill and vision to bypass that and successfully mount attacks - often initiated by the precise distribution of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

We'd have taken a point beforehand, but one goal never looked sufficient to meet that aspiration given Villa's vitality, the defence (particularly Trippier) collectively tiring as the game progressed. Having two midfielders unable to risk a tackle hardly helped either....

It's tempting to suggest that a reshuffle would have been timely, but few options presented themselves in terms of changing a settled side on a winning run - those coming off the bench all operating at lower levels for a variety of reasons.

Newcastle's pride and goal difference may have taken a knock, but they remain third in the table, with a free week to prepare for the visit of Ipswich Town.

Villa meanwhile have the little matter of a rearranged visit to Manchester City on Tuesday night, ahead of next Saturday's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

More to follow....

Jason Tindall:

"On reflection over the 90 minutes Aston Villa deserved to win. From our perspective maybe a third game in six days caught up with us around about the hour is there. The effort is there. We can't lose sight of where we are.

"We now need to make sure that we mentally refresh, take a couple of days to recover and make sure we come back and work hard to deliver a good performance against Ipswich.

"We knew they would start fast. Their record here at Villa Park is what it is for a reason. We were disappointed with the start but we showed great character to get ourselves back into the game and go in level at 1-1 at half time.

"The second half we went out and started the half OK, but around the hour mark when we conceded the second, the physicality and effort caught up to us. We started making little errors that are unlike us that led to goals.

"Full credit to the players, the effort they have put in this week is there for all to see but maybe today was a step too far for us.

"I wouldn't say that it is a reality check. It was always going to be a tough game coming here to Villa Park. What a fantastic side they are with a great manager.

"We have had many setbacks but one thing about the players and the club is we stick together and come out fighting."

The 18 year-old right winger is out of contract at the end of the current season, Newcastle reportedly scouting him several times and credited with an interest in sealing a deal since the turn of the year.

Spanish youth international Cordero debuted for Malaga during the 2023/24 season when they gained promotion from the third tier and has featured regularly in the Segunda Division this time round, scoring five times.

England began their Group B campaign with a 3-2 victory over Japan in Ardelay on Tuesday. Goalkeeper George was in the starting line-up and midfielder Sam started on the bench - we're unsure whether the latter featured.

Next up was a 0-3 loss at the hands of Mexico in La Chataigneraie on Thursday, with Sam in the starting line-up at George dropping down to the bench.

Update:
Defender extension
details emerge

The Athletic report that Jamaal Lascelles has agreed a contract extension that will keep him at SJP until summer 2026, not 2025 as was previously assumed.

It's claimed that a deal for an additional 12 months was done late last year, but no official announcement has yet come from the player or club.

The 31 year-old defender joined United from Nottingham Forest back in 2014, making the first of 251 league and cup appearances in September 2015.

Suffering an ACL injury during a home victory over West Ham in March 2024, Lascelles is yet to kick a ball this season but has recently returned to training.

Born Or Died:

1944 Ron Guthrie born, Burradon.
(1963-73)

Spotted playing for New Hartley Juniors, Ron was converted from a left winger to a left back after injuring a cartilage while turning out for Newcastle reserves.

Making his first team debut in August 1966 in a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, he was never a regular starter, with Frank Clark first-choice number three at SJP.

Occasionally deployed as a sweeper, Ron also suffered recurring injury problems but was involved in the successful Fairs Cup campaign of 1968/69 as a substitute.

An injury to David Craig in the home tie against Real Zaragoza saw Guthrie get his chance, with Clark moving to right back.

Unfortunately his season then came to a premature end after another cartilage injury, sustained against Arsenal.

There was to be a happy ending though, when Joe Harvey presented Ron with a Fairs Cup winner's miniature trophy before the start of the next season - the club having acquired extra ones for the substitutes.

That season saw Guthrie feature against both Porto and Anderlecht in the Fairs Cup, finally leaving the club for the mackems in January 1973 - and playing in their FA Cup Final win over Leeds that year.

He later played in South Africa, before returning to the region and joining Blyth Spartans. Involved in their memorable FA Cup run of 1978, Ron appeared at a packed SJP against Wrexham in February 1978 as they bowed out at the Fifth Round stage.

Ron later had a milk business with fellow ex-Magpie David Craig and also worked as a delivery driver for Fenwick. He's the cousin of ex-Newcastle chief scout Graham Carr.

1989 Death of George Mathison, 79.
(1926-33)

1995 Kevin Mbabu born, Chêne-Bougeries, Switzerland. (2013-17)

Defender signed for an undisclosed fee from Swiss club Servette during the January 2013 transfer window, following a successful trial.

Scouted playing for Switzerland U19s at a tournament in Scotland during 2012, Mbabu also trained with both Manchester United and Arsenal.

Making a single senior team appearance at Servette, Kevin's competitive debut for Newcastle came in a 2-1 reserve team victory away to Stoke City in April 2013.

A succession of injuries disrupted his first full season as a Magpie however, suffering both hamstring and ankle problems.

Returning to fitness in the closing weeks of the 2013/14 campaign, Mbabu collected a Northumberland Senior Cup winners medal after beating Blyth Spartans 4-0 at SJP.

Injured on international duty with the Swiss U19s, the following season saw him feature occaisonally for United U21s before a surprise loan move to Rangers in February 2015

Kevin moved to Ibrox along with Haris Vuckic, Remie Streete, Shane Ferguson and Gael Bigirimana, but his arrival was delayed due to further fitness issues and his most high profile game was
the SFA Youth Cup Final.

Omitted from Newcastle's first team squad the following pre-season, Mbabu made a competitive debut at right back in a 0-1 League Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday at Gallowgate in September 2015.

Selected for a 2-2 home draw with Chelsea the following weekend (at left back this time), Kevin played three more games for Steve McClaren, but was injured again when Rafa Benitez arrived in March 2016.

Selected twice as an unused substitute in the closing weeks of the season, Mbabu made the senior squad for pre-season in Ireland but was sent home due to injury.

August 2016 saw him agree a season-long loan to Swiss side BSC Young Boys that was made permanent in June 2017.

Making his senior bow for Switzerland in 2018, Kevin signed a four-year deal for German side Wolfsburg in April 2019.

In the Swiss squad at the 2022 World Cup, a move to Fulham followed but a disastrous spell at Craven Cottage that saw him start just one Premier League game (a 1-4 home loss to Newcastle) ended with a loan return to Servette in February 2023.

A season-long loan to Bundesliga side Augsburg was Kevin's next move in September 2023.

He joined Danish side Midtjylland in August 2024.

1992 Nick Pope born, Soham.
(2022-present)

Newcastle's second signing of the summer 2022 transfer window was a goalkeeper who had just suffered relegation from the top flight as a result of defeat by United.

Secured on a four year contract for £10m, the England international was in the final year of his deal at Turf Moor and became the third senior custodian at SJP alongside Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow - joining as Freddie Woodman was sold to Preston North End.

Released by Ipswich Town at the age of 16, Nick was at non-league Bury Town when Charlton Athletic took him on trial in 2011.

Loan spells at Cambridge United, Aldershot, York City and Bury followed before becoming first choice for the Addicks during 2015.

Sold to Burnley in 2016, a first senior outing for England followed against Costa Rica the following June, having never played at any international level previously.

Although sharing duties with the other two in pre-season following his debut against 1860 Munich in Austria, it soon became evident that Pope would be first choice and he made his bow in the opening day home defeat of Nottingham Forest.

By September, Dubravka had flounced off to Old Trafford on loan and free agent Loris Karius arrived, Nick embarking on an epic ten game run of clean sheets that was ended the following January after 931 minutes.

Disaster then struck with a red card at home to Liverpool, putting Pope out of the Carabao Cup Final and leaving Karius to go between the posts against Manchester United - Darlow on loan at Hull City and Dubravka back, but cup-tied due to his Red Devils stint.

Returning to the side, Nick played his part in Newcastle's resurgence and denied Ivan Toney from the penalty spot at Brentford.

Minor surgery on a finger injury followed the securing of Champions League football but his 2023/24 season was cut short with a shoulder injury sustained against Manchester United in December.

Dubravka deputised again and it was no given that Pope would be first choice once fit. However, he returned for the final game of the season.

He suffered injury again at the end of the year but once again he came back to take over from Dubravka and was in the starting line-up for the Carabao Cup Final success against Liverpool.

A week ahead of the FA Cup Final against  Aston Villa at Wembley, United were in London and in the opinion of one reporter present, "gave one the impression that they were holding a lot in reserve."

This was the second of four successive Chelsea home games to end their season. Despite winning them all though, they were relegated on goal average. Shame.

A sensational finish to a mundane game at Leeds Road came after Frank Hudspeth needlessly conceded a corner in the final seconds of play.

From that, Northumbrian native George Brown was able to head through a crowd of players and into the net. The visitors protested that there had been a handball, but referee Mr G.N.Watson was unmoved and the goal was given.

Victory for second-placed Town over leaders Newcastle left the Terriers four points behind with three games each to play - but with a much worse goal average. One more win would do be enough to ensure the title for United.

However, the points were thrown away in no small part to Andy Griffin's dismissal for a reckless lunge which earned him a second booking from Dermot Gallacher.

The referee also played his part by ignoring a blatant penalty claim, when Craig Bellamy was clearly impeded in the first half.

Legwinski equalised with a fine long range effort before former (and future) Magpie Lee Clark netted a late winner - the second season that he'd scored in this fixture.

Despite having their game moved back to the Monday night for TV and with the volcanic ash cloud wrecking travel plans for both fans and players, United
still clinched the Championship title with this victory at Home Park.

The 2-0 scoreline, yellow shirts and reaction of the crowd were all reminiscent of Blundell Park in 1993 as delirious Toon fans celebrated with the players on the pitch.

For David Kelly, this time read Wayne Routledge who rounded the keeper and squeezed the ball inside the post as he struggled to keep his feet, to make it 2-0 after Andy Carroll had given us the lead with a towering header.

Newcastle held out for a heartening point on a night that loan signing Stephen Ireland made a belated debut - eleven weeks after arriving.

However, he was unable to coax anything close to a goal threat out of our blunt front pair of Peter Lovenkrands and Shola Ameobi.

Local anti-hero Michael Owen was introduced from the bench to a wall of booing but thankfully the nightmare scenario of him scoring didn't come to pass and after one major scare, the Magpies held on to claim a much-prized point.

That heart-stopping moment came in injury time as Hernandez went to ground under challenge from ex-Red Devil Danny Simpson and referee Lee Probert looked for one awful moment to have indicated a spot kick.

However, it rapidly became evident that he'd actually penalised the visiting player for diving and showed him a yellow card.

The visitors led from their first meaningful attack, Aleksandar Kolarov's free-kick headed in by a clearly offside Sergio Aguero.

United levelled when Vurnon Anita tucked a low left footer in off a post for his third goal in our colours and first on home turf.

However there were few opportunities for Rafa Benitez to register back to back home wins following victory over Swansea City here four days earlier.
