Premier League:
Red & White rose day

Both automatic promotion spots in the Championship were confirmed on Monday; a 6-0 win by Leeds United over Stoke City and a 2-1 victory for Burnley against Sheffield United meaning that Premier League football returns to Elland Road and Turf Moor in 2025/26.

With two games to play, the two promoted sides are level on points, although Daniel Farkes Whites enjoy a far superior goal difference to Scott Parker's Clarets.

Sheffield United and the mackems will contest the playoffs, along with two from Bristol City, Coventry City, Boro, Millwall and Blackburn Rovers.

West Bromwich Albion retain a mathematical chance of doing so, but don't rate their own chances of that, dismissing manager Tony Mowbray on Monday.

Ipswich Town are set to join Southampton and Leicester City in dropping out of the top flight, while Everton are now mathematically safe - meaning that Bramley Moor Dock will become the 61st ground to stage PL games.

2024/25:

Ipswich Town (h)

United play their final 3pm kick-off of the season on Saturday, hosting an Ipswich side who will be relegated from the Premier League if they fail to win, although results elsewhere could end their top-flight stay regardless of the outcome at Gallowgate.

Team:
Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles remain out, but there's optimism that Sven Botman could return.

Fabian Schar is an early doubt following his withdrawal during the loss at Villa, although that was described as precautionary to combat a hamstring concern.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 2/9
The draw 11/2
ITFC win 11/1

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

ITFC: Sammy Szmodics, Kalvin Phillips, Arijanet Muric, Omari Giraud-Hutchinson, Jaden Philogene, Chiedozie Ogbene and Wesley Burns are all unavailable. Conor Townsend and Nathan Broadhead are both doubtful.

Ipswich are set to be without Leif Davis after the Toon-supporting defender was red-carded during Sunday's 0-4 home reverse at the hands of Arsenal.

Kieran McKenna's side have won three times on the road this season in the Premier League - at Spurs, Wolves and Bournemouth. They've managed five away draws, taking points from visits to Brighton, Southampton, Fulham, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Town's only away clean sheet came in the 0-0 draw at Brighton back in September.

England U16s completed their participation at the Montagu Tournament in France on Monday, winning a playoff tie to finish seventh out of the eight teams.

Newcastle's George Mair and Sam Alabi were in the squad, goalkeeper George starting a 3-2 win over Japan on Tuesday and a 1-3 loss to Portugal on Saturday.

Finishing bottom of their group, England then beat local side Selection Vendee 3-1 on Monday - team lineups tbc.

Born Or Died:

1963 Death of Jackie "Jock" Rutherford, 78. (1902-13)

Percy-Main born England International who won three Championships and one FA Cup winner's medal for Newcastle.

Nicknamed "The Newcastle Flyer", Jackie died in Neasden, North London where he'd settled after ending his playing career with Arsenal and then Clapton Orient.

2007 Joe Brayson born, Newcastle.
(2022-present)

The son of ex-Magpie Paul - and a forward like his dad, schoolboy Joe made his U18 bow in a 2-2 draw at Manchester United during October 2022.

Scoring his first goal at that level against Derby County the following August, Brayson debuted for the U21s during a 1-2 EFL Trophy loss at Crewe Alexandra in November 2023.

The 2024/25 campaign saw him feature at both U18 and U21 level, getting off the mark for the latter with a brace against Stoke City in April 2025.

Not a great end to the league campaign but this was a dress rehearsal for the following week's FA Cup final between the two clubs.

While Villa were at full strength, United named nine reserves and were subsequently fined for fielding a weakened team.

First choice custodian Sandy Mutch kept his place in the side but suffered a knee injury during this match with the score at 1-3.

His place was taken by Andy Aitken - who then conceded a rapid hat trick of goals from Villa's inside forward Billy Walker.

Mutch missed out on playing in the final as a consequence of his ailment.
