Premier League:
Red & White rose day

Both automatic promotion spots in the Championship were confirmed on Monday; a 6-0 win by Leeds United over Stoke City and a 2-1 victory for Burnley against Sheffield United meaning that Premier League football returns to Elland Road and Turf Moor in 2025/26.

With two games to play, the two promoted sides are level on points, although Daniel Farkes Whites enjoy a far superior goal difference to Scott Parker's Clarets.

Sheffield United and the mackems will contest the playoffs, along with two from Bristol City, Coventry City, Boro, Millwall and Blackburn Rovers.

West Bromwich Albion retain a mathematical chance of doing so, but don't rate their own chances of that, dismissing manager Tony Mowbray on Monday.

Ipswich Town are set to join Southampton and Leicester City in dropping out of the top flight, while Everton are now mathematically safe - meaning that Bramley Moor Dock will become the 61st ground to stage PL games.

Premier League:

Nottingham Forest's 2-1 win at Spurs on Monday saw Newcastle drop from third to fourth. That became fifth on Tuesday night following Manchester City's 2-1 home victory over Aston Villa.

Those latter two sides  have played a game more than ourselves - victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday would restore the Magpies to third place.

The limited edition softcover publication has over 70 photos across 60 pages and
costs £8.50 plus postage.

They can be pre-ordered now
online here

We have two copies to give away and simply require you to email your answer to the following question to [email protected] subject line Toon

Miguel Almiron and which other player received Carabao Cup winner's medals despite having left Newcastle before the Final was played?

U21s:
Friday date for stiffs

Following the conclusion of the main PL2 season on Friday, all eight play-off section ties have now been confirmed, with ninth-placed Newcastle travelling to face eighth-placed Arsenal.

That will be played at the Meadow Park home of National League side Boreham Wood, Arsenal initially publicising this Saturday but now confirming that the game will have a 7pm kick-off on Friday April 25th.

Admission for all supporters will be free of charge.

PL2 playoffs:

Fri 25.04.2025:
Arsenal v Newcastle (7pm)
Manchester City v Liverpool (7pm)
Manchester United v Everton (7pm)

Sat 26.04.2025:

Sun 27.04.2025:
Southampton v Leicester City (2pm)

Mon 28.04.2025:

Fulham v Nottingham Forest (3pm)

2024/25:
Ipswich Town (h)

United's final Saturday 3pm kick-off of the season sees them host an Ipswich side whose relegation from the Premier League will be confirmed if they fail to win - although results elsewhere could end their top-flight stay regardless of the outcome at Gallowgate.

Team:
Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles remain out, but there's optimism that Sven Botman could return.

Fabian Schar is an early doubt following his withdrawal during the loss at Villa, although that was described as precautionary to combat a hamstring concern.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 2/9
The draw 11/2
ITFC win 11/1

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

ITFC: Sammy Szmodics, Kalvin Phillips, Arijanet Muric, Omari Giraud-Hutchinson, Jaden Philogene, Chiedozie Ogbene and Wesley Burns are all unavailable. Conor Townsend and Nathan Broadhead are both doubtful.

Ipswich are set to be without Leif Davis after the Toon-supporting defender was red-carded during Sunday's 0-4 home reverse at the hands of Arsenal.

Kieran McKenna's side have won three times on the road this season in the Premier League - at Spurs, Wolves and Bournemouth. They've managed five away draws, taking points from visits to Brighton, Southampton, Fulham, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Town's only away clean sheet away from home came in the 0-0 draw at Brighton back in September.

Newcastle's George Mair and Sam Alabi were in the squad, goalkeeper George starting a 3-2 win over Japan on Tuesday and a 1-3 loss to Portugal on Saturday.

Born Or Died:

1991 Death of Jackie Bell, 51.
(1956-62)

Evenwood-born Bell passed away less than a year after United faced his hometown club in a fund-raising friendly.

Diagnosed with diabetes while a junior at SJP, Jackie was forced to have a leg amputated late in life.

1993 Ryan Page born, Newcastle.
(2008-11)

Academy defender/midfielder whose debut for Newcastle U18s came in a 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United days before celebrating his sixteenth birthday in 2009.

Graduating to the reserve team squad but remaining an unused substitute at that level, Ryan was released by United in 2011 and signed for North Shields.

After a brief spell at fellow Northern League side South Shields, Page rejoined the Robins later that season.

Later moves took him to Newcastle Benfield, Hebburn Town, West Allotment Celtic, Team Northumbria, Heaton Stannington, Seaton Delaval Amateurs and Killingworth Town.

This friendly took place at a significant point in the history of both clubs; Northern League Newcastle soon to be accepted into the Second Division for the following season.

Accrington meanwhile sent a second XI to Tyneside as their first team were playing a test match (playoff) against Sheffield United at the neutral venue of Trent Bridge.

A 0-1 loss confirmed relegation from Division One and they opted to resign from the Football League rather than play in the Second Division, folding in 1896.

United were looking to retain the trophy that they'd won in a replay at Goodison Park and but were to be frustrated at their hoodoo ground of Crystal Palace for a fifth (and final) time.

Injury deprived the Magpies of influential duo Albert Shepherd and Peter McWilliam - and both were still missing when the Bantams won the replay 1-0 at Old Trafford four days later.

Newcastle trekked to Norfolk for the final of the Norwich Hospital Cup against their Southern League hosts.

After 90 minutes failed to produce a goal, an additional 20 minutes was similarly barren.

The tie was staged at The Nest, a cramped enclosure built on a former chalk pit.

A then-record crowd of 12,000 squeezed into the ground, but unbelievably before the FA petitioned Norwich to close the ground in 1935, over 25,000 somehow witnessed a cup tie there against Sheffield Wednesday.

1920 Newcastle reserves recorded a 9-1 friendly victory against Berwick United at their Union Park ground.

Despite torrential rain, a 1,700 crowd were present but the gate receipts weren't sufficient to save the hosts, who folded ahead of the following season.

A week after defeating Albion 3-0 at St. James' Park, United took another two points off them at the Hawthorns - their first success there in seven visits.

1931 St. James' Park hosted a representative match between Anglo Scots and Home Scots XIs, with gate receipts going to benefit Aged Miners Funds.

7,000 fans were present for a midweek game that kicked off at 6.15pm and the Anglo Scots overcame a 1-2 deficit at half time to run out 3-2 winners - former Magpie Hughie Gallacher netting the winner.

Current SJP trio Bob Thomson, Dave Davidson and Jimmy Boyd represented the Anglos.

A low-key end of season contest saw United gain revenge for defeat by the same scoreline at Ewood Park.

Forward Johnny Dryden's winner was his only senior strike for United. A distant relative of the Charltons and Milburns signed from Ashington, he was selected due to Tommy Lang's injury.

United's barren league sequence lengthened to eight games as the Swans tasted victory at SJP for the very first time - to the delight of their manager, former Magpie Neil Harris.

1939 Meanwhile, Newcastle Reserves were in Central League action against Everton.

It ended 2-2 at Goodison Park, with goals from Ossie Park and Ralph Birkett for the visitors.

Newcastle were well beaten despite making a perfect start to the game and Tom Swinburne saving a Jack Rowley penalty at 1-0.

Due to bomb damage at Old Trafford, this game was staged at Maine Road.

1946 Meanwhile the two reserve sides met in the Central League at Old Trafford, with the visitors running out 2-0 winners.

Former Magpies goalkeeper Norman Tapken was between the posts for Manchester United.

Having lost 1-2 at home on Good Friday to Chelsea, the return at Stamford Bridge went awry in the second half - United reduced to ten men on the hour when Bob Stokoe pulled his thigh.

Newcastle ended the season with four straight defeats but relegation was never on the agenda, as they finished four points clear of the third bottom mackems and seven clear of demoted Cardiff City.

Following an enforced two week break since last playing, relegation-haunted United came up short in their "must win" visit to Hillsborough.

However just one of the other five sides in the bottom places avoided defeat, making this a point gained rather than one surrendered.

With central defensive pair John McNamee and Dave Elliott equal to anything the Owls threw at them, "United survived by a blend of hair-raising luck and pluck" reckoned The Journal reporter.

Having failed to score in five previous meetings against the Blues, United were quickly 2-0 up after John Tudor met Stewart Barrowclough crosses and twice beat Peter Bonetti.

Chelsea were level by the break, before Malcolm Macdonald headed in another Barrowclough centre to restore Newcastle's advantage.

Tommy Baldwin then scored his second of a pulsating game to ensure a point apiece.

1972 At Gallowgate meanwhile, the reserves shared four goals with West Bromwich Albion in the Central League.

A Tommy Cassidy penalty and Ron Guthrie's last minute shot ensured for a point for a Magpies side for whom Paul Cannell and Colin Ayre both debuted.

A suitably sombre game virtually sealed relegation and kicked off at 3.06pm as a tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy a week earlier.

1996 A 2-3 home defeat for the reserves at Gateshead Stadium by Bolton Wanderers included goals from Jimmy Crawford and Stuart Elliott.

1998
Newcastle reserves secured promotion from the Pontins League Third Division after a 1-0 win over Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

German midfielder Ralf Keidel netted, while 'keeper Shaka Hislop saved a penalty on what was his farewell appearance.

The Magpies included two young trialists from Ajax Amsterdam, Jimmy Guy and Luciano Van Callen, but neither impressed.

And it was soon confirmed that the side's "feat" was meaningless, when the Premier Reserve League was revealed for the following season - including Newcastle.

Alan Shearer confirmed on the morning of this game that his playing days were over, after the injury sustained against the mackems the previous Monday.

The number nine duly took his place next to manager Glenn Roeder on the sidelines and received a great ovation from the SJP crowd. Shay Given meanwhile took the armband.

Despite being without messrs Owen, Shearer, Taylor, Parker, Bowyer, Emre and Dyer, the Magpies easily dealt with Bryan Robson's soon-to-be relegated Baggies side.

Goals from Lubo Satka, Michael Richardson, Jonathyn Quinn and Gael Bigirimana made it 20 years since Spartans last held the trophy, this latest defeat the tenth occasion since a 1994 success that they been losing finalists.

2017 A near-perfect set of results meant that without playing, Newcastle were just one win away from the Premier League.

Huddersfield Town's 1-4 thumping by Fulham and a 2-3 loss at Nottingham Forest left Reading six points behind United with a vastly inferior goal difference.

That meant an Easter Monday home win over Preston North End would guarantee promotion for Rafa Benitez & Co.

Brighton's loss at Norwich City meanwhile resurrected the possibility of Newcastle winning the Championship.
