An NUFC check list: Bruno in the middle, Botman at the back, Isak in attack, Howe in the dugout. All were present and correct on Saturday, as three goals and three points saw them restored to third place in the Premier League.

United banished thoughts of their Villa Park misadventure as they returned to winning ways on Saturday, relegation finally becoming a reality for an Ipswich Town side who were reduced to ten men before half time.

Town midfielder Ben Johnson collected his first booking on the half hour after diving and seven minutes later was en route to the dressing room after illegally grabbing Isak.

The game at that point remained scoreless, a home line-up showing one change - that of Joe Willock for knee injury victim Joelinton - starting slowly and not threatening the visitor's goal until Bruno's 22nd minute effort was chalked off for an alleged push on goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Signs of life from United saw two opportunities for Isak in quick succession just before the red card; heading over before a powerful volley cleared the Leazes End crossbar.

The numerical advantage spurred United on and a series of goalmouth scrambles followed as Ipswich were unable to clear their lines - Bruno's bicycle kick cleared off the line and Sandro Tonali striking the goal frame, with Harvey Barnes unable to scramble home the loose ball.

Referee Michael Salisbury was jeered by both sets of fans as he struggled to control the game, booking both Burn and Liam Delap after a farcical shoving episode in the Town area and indifferent to what looked like a calculated attempt by Julio Enciso and Sam Morsy to unsettle Willock.

One minute of first half added time was then extended to five after Enciso grabbed Jacob Murphy's arm in the area; a pitchside VAR check belatedly giving Isak the opportunity to smash home his spot kick to open the scoring.

It was always going to be a matter of how many goals the Magpies would win by and the second period featured a series of elongated passing sequences as the 10 Town players attempted to form a blockade around their box.

That was breached 11 minutes after the restart when Kieran Trippier's swooping cross was headed in from point blank range by Dan Burn at the back post.

Trippier's corner then assisted another header - William Osula looping in his maiden Premier League goal before dancing a jig of delight at pitchside with Bruno.

There were to be no more goals but the welcome return of Sven Botman from the bench after missing the last 12 games was warmly applauded by those present.

After the bespoke musical selections that followed the last two home wins, Ed Sheeran was thankfully absent from the PA system - as was Petula Clark's "Downtown"....

Team: Pope, Trippier, Livramento, Schar (Botman 83), Burn, Willock (Miley 67), Guimaraes, Tonali, J.Murphy (Gordon 67), Barnes (Wilson 77), Isak (Osula 77).
Subs n/u: Dubravka, Ruddy, Longstaff, Krafth.

Booked: Burn, (Tindall)

Goals: Isak 45+4pen, Burn 56, Osula 80

ITFC: Palmer, Greaves, Burgess, Wolfenden, O'Shea, Clarke (Godfrey 40), J.Taylor (Luongo 86), Morsy, Johnson, Enciso (Chaplin 71), Delap (Hirst 71).
Subs n/u: Boniface, Cajuste, Hutchinson, T.Taylor, Walton.

Booked: Johnson, Delap, Greaves

Sent off: Johnson (37 - second yellow)

Crowd:
52,171 including 3,000 away fans.

Eddie Howe:

"It was difficult and we expected that. It was a day to be patient and make good decisions with the ball.

"That
(opening) goal was a massive turning point.

"When you’re running out of games as we are, you want to get back into the positions that you want to be in.

"We know how tight it is, we know the quality of clubs we’re competing against, but all we can do is try to win our games and it was a big step forward today.

"It will go down to the wire I think, the important thing was that we bounced back from last week which was a disappointing defeat, but we've been very consistent and it's a real good return to a positive result and now we have four huge games.

”Getting goals from different players is key and Dan has always been a scorer of important goals for us.

"It was great to see Will (Osukcome on the pitch and score with such a great header. He's a player of rich potential and hopefully that's a real confidence lift."

On his return to the touchline:

"It was great to be back there, I felt very much at home.

"It was great with the result. It makes a big difference. I was lacking in energy today, so JT
(Jason Tindall) took most of the reins from the touchline.

"Obviously my ability to shout is reduced, but I’m just pleased that I was able to lead the team and be back out where I love to be."

On the absent Joelinton:

"He’s going to see a specialist, and I’m sure he’ll be scanned there as well. He trained yesterday and just felt that his knee wasn’t 100 per cent right.

"That’s the knee that he had an injury with earlier in the season. He’s done brilliantly to play through the number of games he has without being 100% fit, but he got to the point where he felt it needed a slight intervention.

"Let’s keep our fingers crossed it’s not serious.”

On the returning Sven Botman:

"
He is slightly ahead of where we thought he’d be, but he trained really well this week and looked excellent. He’s looked after himself and done everything right to try to come back as quickly as possible.

"He is a great professional, and he’s also a big presence for us, we’ve missed him. It was great to be able to bring him onto the pitch in a game that maybe wouldn’t stress him as much as normal.

"It was a perfect reintroduction into the game.”

Stats:

62 points exceeds United's final 2023/24 total of 60.

Alexander Isak
struck his 22nd PL goal, moving him on to 26 in all competitions this season - that's his best
NUFC haul, one more than he managed in 2023/24.

Dan Burn
scored his first PL goal of the season, his fourth in that competition for United and eighth in all competitions.

William Osula's
first PL goal made him the 170th different Magpie to have netted for in that competition and the third Dane, after Jon Dahl Tomasson and Peter Lovenkrands.

Osula had failed to trouble the scorer during his 21 PL outings as a Sheffield United player last season.

Bruno Guimaraes
played his 150th league and cup game for United while Harvey Barnes reached a half century of Premier League games as a Magpie.

Following a 4-0 success at Portman Road, United wrapped up their seventh PL double of the season, also taking six points Spurs, Wolves, Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Manchester United.

Derby delight !

mackem U18s  1  Newcastle U18s  3

Three goals within 15 second half minutes were enough to secure victory for Newcastle U18s in Saturday's derby fixture at the academy of plight.

An unremarkable opening 45 minutes yielded few scoring chances for either side and no goals -  United's best opportunity seeing captain Henry Johnson unable to keep his header down following a corner kick.

The second half was a different story, the Magpies going ahead within three minutes of the restart when the trialist home goalkeeper flapped at Guy Bloomer's right wing cross and Alex O'Donovan fired home.

1-0 then became 2-0 in the 52nd minute when Matheos Ferreira beat his man on the left before centering for Joe Brayson to bundle the ball in from close range.

Brayson then turned provider 10 minutes later, teeing up Kyle Fitzgerald to cut inside an opponent and place a low shot into the nearest corner of the mackem net.

The hosts reduced the arrears three minutes later when a long range effort from Bayley Hester eluded Adam Harrison, but United secured victory with no further incident.

Team: Harrison, Bloomer, Cogdon, Epia (Durrant 74), Johnson, Finneran, Fitzgerald (Yildiz 85), Harper (Wooster 77), Brayson (M.Taylor 78), O'Donovan, Ferreira.

Spot kick sickener

Arsenal U21s  2  Newcastle U21s  1

Newcastle U21s exited from the PL2 playoffs on Friday at the last 16 stage, conceding their second penalty kick of the game in the final seconds of normal time.

Playing at the Meadow Park home of National League side Boreham Wood where they'd lost 1-4 to Arsenal earlier this year, United trailed by one goal at the interval.

That was a 25th minute penalty conversion by Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, following Cathal Heffernan's illegal challenge in the box on Andre Harriman-Annous.

The visitors appealed for a spot kick of their own in the closing minutes of the opening half, but to no avail.

The Magpies did level within a minute of the restart, Scott Bailey's long-range free kick catching goalkeeper Tommy Setford unawares.

And they twice came close to going ahead on the hour; Sean Neave denied and Ben Parkinson narrowly off target.

Jay Turner-Cooke's 84th minute free kick from distance was then tipped away by Setford at the expense of a corner.

With extra time and spot kicks looming, the Gunners were awarded their second penalty of the evening after visiting substitute Rory Powell caught Charles Sagoe Junior.

With Butler-Oyedji off the field, Khayon Edwards beat Aidan Harris in the third minute of added time, sending his side through to a quarter final against Manchester City and ending Newcastle's competitive season at this level.

Playoff line-up still tbc

Although Burnley and Leeds United have snagged the automatic promotion places and are now tussling over the title, the race to make the playoffs will go to the last weekend of the Championship season.

Sheffield United and the mackems are now confirmed in third and fourth positions, while a victory for Bristol City over Leeds United on Monday in their game in hand would cement their occupancy of fifth spot.

Coventry City, Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and Boro all remain in with a chance of filling that final place.

Update:
Howe return: quotes

Eddie Howe was back in the chair on Friday morning for the pre-game media gathering, recounting his recent hospitalisation and diagnosis with pneumonia:

"I'm not 100% in my body but I'd like to think I'm close to 100% in my mind, which is the important thing.

"It's been difficult. I try to take a positive from every experience but this has been a real challenge."

"The Leicester game I felt awful I planned to come back to training ahead of Man United. I had a shower and was getting ready to go and something was telling me 'no'. That was the moment things changed.

"I was pleased to be told to go to hospital. That was the right place for me. It was a bit of a relief to get that care in that moment."

"The last few weeks has been a real challenge.

"When you get to where I was you see life through different eyes. It’s important not to forget how you saw things in that moment. None of us know how long we are going to be on the planet for.

"I’ve learned not to take for granted what I do here on a daily basis. It was a relief to be told I needed to go to hospital, because I instinctively knew I was in the right place. I pretty much crawled in.

“My take away is I need to give myself a bit more care and love if I can, and give more thought to what I’m doing.

"The care I received from the NHS was first class.

"A big thank you to Charlotte Milne and all her staff who looked after me. The care and love I felt from them. The well wishes I received from everyone - I really do appreciate it.

"I have to say it brings a sharper focus on what is important in your life. My family and friends looked after me in this period. It brings clarity. You can't take things for granted.

"You take your health for granted when you're feeling good: when you're suddenly faced with health issues, it's difficult to deal with - when you're in a job that demands you're there physically and mentally every day.

"I felt really bad - and didn't know how bad.

"I'm like most men, you probably think you're going to be okay in a few days. I was very thankful that the doctor here, Paul Catterson, acted really quickly."

"I felt, from watching the two games, that the atmosphere was incredible - I'm just delighted to be back.

"I'd like to think I would act differently if feeling that way again. I do think it's important as there's a temptation to think you can fight through anything.

"When I felt well enough, the laptop was straight back out. I was watching Ipswich Town straight away!

"I made a conscious decision, when I felt I didn't feel well enough to focus on the football, to give Jason (Tindall) and all the coaches the full responsibility.

"For me, you're either all in or all out, and I couldn't contribute, so I said to Jason right at the start. It's over to you and and didn't he do well?

"I thought he was absolutely brilliant with Graeme (Jones), Simon (Weatherstone) and Stephen (Purches) and all the coaches and the players. I thought they were absolutely magnificent.

"I was able to watch all of the games. For the first two, I wasn't really there mentally, but I was really proud and so lifted by the performance or performances.

"That's of course a very similar experience to the one I had against Brentford in my very first game (missing due to COVID), not one that I particularly enjoyed, but yeah a big thank you to everybody for what they did."

On This Day in History
26th April

Born Or Died:

1947 Death of Joe McClarence, 61
(1904-08)

1978 Paddy Kelly born, Kirkcaldy, Scotland. (1997-98)

Defender/sweeper who signed for Celtic as a 14 year-old and played once competitively for them (selected by Hoops caretaker boss Billy Stark at right back against Dundee United in May 1997).

Made available on a free transfer soon after following the installation of Wim Jansen at Parkhead, Paddy joined up with ex-Hoops coach Tommy Burns at SJP.

After appearing for United's reserve and junior sides, Paddy was loaned to Reading in March 1998 and made his senior debut in English football at Portman Road in a 0-1 Division One loss to Ipswich Town.

That loan move came about after the Royals appointed Tommy Burns as manager, but Kelly soon returned to SJP and was released when his two-year deal ended in 1999.

Returning to Scotland with Livingston, later moves took Kelly to Raith Rovers, Partick Thistle, East Fife and Cowdenbeath before a persistent back problem led to him calling time on his playing career.

Kelly subsequently coached at Fife-based Scottish Junior side, Newburgh United.

1994 Odysseas Vlachodimos born, Stuttgart, Germany. (2024-present)

United's bid to comply with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules during July 2024 saw the enforced sales of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.

Rather unexpectedly it also resulted in one arrival from the City Ground in the shape of this Greek international goalkeeper, valued at around £20m.

Although featuring in five of the club's six pre-season games, it soon became clear that Odysseas had been acquired for fiscal rather than football reasons, such was his lack of competitive game time.

Belatedly making the bench for a Premier League game in October, his first and only competitive appearance came days earlier when replacing Martin Dubravka at half time in a Carabao Cup tie against League Two side AFC Wimbledon.

In a faintly surreal twist, "Vlach" started for Greece later that month as they beat an England side including Anthony Gordon 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.

The German-born goalkeeper made his senior club bow for Stuttgart and played for Pananthinaikos before joining Benfica in 2018.

Between the posts when Newcastle lost 2-3 at the Estadio da Luz in July 2022, Odysseas made a £7m switch to Forest a year later but soon lost his starting place to SJP old boy Matz Sels.

He's the third Greek international to play for United, after defender Nicos Dabizas and midfielder George Georgiadis.

A Wednesday evening kickabout in front of a "thin crowd" at SJP saw Nops goalkeeper Charlie Watts keep Newcastle at bay almost single-handedly.

"Time after time (he) was called upon to exercise all his ingenuity and skills to throw away the balls sent in", remarked The Journal.

By 1896 Watts was a Magpie, via spells at Blackburn Rovers and Burton Wanderers.

United finished the season a disappointing 14th as the all-conquering side of the previous decade started to break up.

The Magpies were missing goalkeeper Jimmy Lawrence whose wife Barbara had passed away two days earlier (They were only married two months earlier, but she died following a miscarriage).

It was reported as appendicitis at the time but her body was exhumed after it transpired that her brother-in-law doctor, Thomas Campbell, had treated the miscarriage while drunk and made things worse.

Campbell was charged with murder after performing an illegal operation, but acquitted after a two day trial.

The Spireites ran out winners at Saltergate thanks to a disputed goal from Ashington-born George Milburn - a cousin of future Magpies legend Wor Jackie.

Newcastle's Len Shackleton came close to opening the scoring but his shot struck a post.

One reporter wrote of Shack that he, "delighted the crowd with his dash and artifice."

United played most of the second half a man short after Duggie Wright went off with a knee injury and lost thanks to a debatable penalty shout against Joe Harvey.

The Magpies provided the opposition in a joint testimonial match for long-serving Royals pair Bill Livingstone and goalkeeper George Marks. Unfortunately Marks injured his hand in the 20th minute and had to leave the field.

1954 Division Two Middlesbrough confirmed the appointment of former Magpie Bob Dennison as their new manager.

Despite guiding his side to victory on Tyneside in this season-closer, Leeds boss (and ex-mackem) Raich Carter was promptly shown the door at Elland Road.

With one game remaining United had stayed up on goal average with the mackems and Sheffield Wednesday tumbling to Division Two.

Newcastle boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with a vital first victory in three outings.

Hammers' left back Jack Burkett was hassled into conceding an own goal by Pop Robson on a wet Wednesday night at Gallowgate.

A 6.30pm kick-off because two floodlight plyons were in the process of being dismantled as part of the flattening of the Leazes End didn't help the attendance but it was still a poor turn-out to witness the last rites of relegated United.

The Canaries were trailing 1-2 when Kevin Halsey was dismissed, but hit back to level and deny United a meaningless victory.

Alan Kennedy marked his final appearance with a goal, while Stewart Barrowclough never played for the first team again.

Two future Magpies netted for the R's, while Brian Ferguson scored the only goal of his short career as a Newcastle player.

1982 The reserves beat Sheffield United 4-0 at SJP, with Graeme Hedley's powerful free kick opening the scoring.

The Boro midfielder was on trial with United and featured in a couple of reserve games, but failed to impress manager Arthur Cox and soon returned to Ayresome Park.

1983 SJP was the venue for a European U21 Championship Qualifier, with Paul Walsh's 75th minute effort enough to see England defeat their Hungarian foes.

7,810 were present but coach Terry Venables didn't select any home players. Mackem Nick Pickering was inevitably booed at every opportunity by Toon fans. The rotters.

Future Magpies John Ryan, Paul Bracewell and John Barnes all played for England.

1983 While SJP hosted the U21 game, United's reserves faced Everton at Goodison.

Veteran defender John Craggs scored from the penalty spot but the Magpies were beaten 1-2.

Dave McKellar returned between the posts as Newcastle successfully got a 1-8 defeat at West Ham out of their system.

Despite their domination however, United struggled to cancel out an early Gordon Davies effort - until injuries forced both Paul Power and Graham Baker off the field.

In the days of just one substitute, the hosts took advantage of facing ten men and Peter Beardsley was involved in all of the goals as Barry Siddall was beaten three times.

United extended their unbeaten run in hicksville to ten games, after Kevin Kilbane upended Craig Bellamy in the box.

With Alan Shearer substituted earlier due to a calf strain, Nobby Solano's spot kick condemned Mick McCarthy's rabble to a thirteenth successive league loss.

The Magpies survived a late scare when Kevin Kyle's header was chalked off after Tore Andre Flo fouled Shay Given.

Although the red and whites claimed they'd been robbed, that conveniently ignored the early effort from Shearer that referee Steve Bennett ruled out for a similar infringement.

Newcastle made it seven games without defeat - but only after giving the Hammers a two goal start in E13.

An Obafemi Martins lob and a Geremi header that struck George McCartney's shoulder were enough to see the Magpies extend their unbeaten run at Upton Park to four games.

Programme cover star Kieron Dyer joined fellow SJP old boys Craig Bellamy and Lee Bowyer on the injured list but Scott Parker was in the home lineup and Nobby Solano came on for the final seconds.

2017 Just two days after securing promotion to the Premier League came this news:

"Newcastle's St. James' Park and West Ham's London Stadium have been raided as part of a police investigation into a suspected £5m income tax and National Insurance fraud. Newcastle's Managing Director Lee Charnley was arrested."

Inevitably, this prompted some (unfounded) speculation over a possible points deduction and/or transfer embargo affecting NUFC were any financial impropriety to be proven.

2021 Goals from Adam Wilson and debutant Kyle Crossley gave United U23s a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in PL2 at Whitley Park.
