U18s:
Teatime for Toon Teens

There's a further change to this week's rearranged U18 league home fixture with Leeds United, which is now a 5.30pm kick-off at Whitley Park on Wednesday.

United's youngsters then conclude their season with a home game against a Manchester City side who secured the Northern section Premier League title last Saturday.

That remains listed by the Premier League as taking place this coming Saturday, but we understand it's also liable to alteration - details awaited.

U18s:
Derby delight !

mackem U18s  1  Newcastle U18s  3

Three goals within 15 second half minutes were enough to secure victory for Newcastle U18s in Saturday's derby fixture at the academy of plight.

An unremarkable opening 45 minutes yielded few scoring chances for either side and no goals -  United's best opportunity seeing captain Henry Johnson unable to keep his header down following a corner kick.

The second half was a different story, the Magpies going ahead within three minutes of the restart when the trialist home goalkeeper flapped at Guy Bloomer's right wing cross and Alex O'Donovan fired home.

1-0 then became 2-0 in the 52nd minute when Matheos Ferreira beat his man on the left before centering for Joe Brayson to bundle the ball in from close range.

Brayson then turned provider 10 minutes later, teeing up Kyle Fitzgerald to cut inside an opponent and place a low shot into the corner of the mackem net.

The hosts reduced the arrears three minutes later when a long range effort from Bayley Hester eluded Adam Harrison, but United secured victory without further incident.

Team: Harrison, Bloomer, Cogdon, Epia (Durrant 74), Johnson, Finneran, Fitzgerald (Yildiz 85), Harper (Wooster 77), Brayson (M.Taylor 78), O'Donovan, Ferreira.
Subs n/u:
Jones, M.Taylor.

Booked: Finneran, Harrison, Johnson.

PL playoffs:
line-up still tbc

Although Burnley and Leeds United have snagged the automatic promotion places and are now tussling over the title, the race to make the playoffs will go to the last weekend of the Championship season.

Sheffield United and the mackems are now confirmed in third and fourth positions, while a victory for Bristol City over Leeds United on Monday in their game in hand would cement their occupancy of fifth spot.

Coventry City, Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and Boro all remain in with a chance of filling that final place.

Harrison Ashby
(QPR):
The already-promoted Clarets staked their claim for the Championship title with a 5-0 success at Loftus Road on Saturday. Having filled in at left back recently, Harrison featured in right midfield and was cautioned during his 86 minutes on the field.

Isaac Hayden
(Portsmouth):
The midfielder completed 72 minutes of Saturday's 1-1 draw away to Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, both goals scored in the first half.

Alex Murphy (Bolton Wanderers):
Now unable to reach the League One playoff places, Bolton played out a 1-1 draw at Peterborough United on Saturday. Alex started and was replaced in second half added time.

Charlie McArthur
(Carlisle United):
A 2-3 loss at Cheltenham Town on Saturday condemned the Cumbrians to relegation from League Two. Charlie wasn't named in the squad, but there was a rare outing for SJP old boy Paul Dummett from the bench for Carlisle.

Joe White
(MK Dons):
It finished 0-0 against Grimsby Town at Stadium MK in League Two on Saturday, with Joe introduced as a 76th minute substitute.

Max Thompson
(Chesterfield):
A 4-1 home win over already-relegated Morecambe on Saturday left the Spireites one point off the League Two playoffs. Max was once again an unused replacement.

James Huntley
(Spennymoor Town):
Despite a 1-0 home win over Oxford City on Saturday, Moors finished a point shy of the National League North playoffs. James remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Miodrag Pivas
(Willem II):
Although playing in a practice match against ADO Den Haag some days earlier, Pivas was omitted from the squad that lost 0-1 at Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie on Sunday.

Travis Hernes
(AaB):
Vejle (h) Danish SuperLiga, Monday.

Vakhtang Salia
(Dinamo Tblisi):
Tblisi were held 1-1 at home by Dinamo Batumi in the Erovnukli Liga on Friday, with Salia starting the game and completing 65 minutes - exiting with his side 0-1 down.

On This Day in History
27th April

Born Or Died:

1877 Andy Aitken born, Ayr, Scotland.
(1895-1906)

Nicknamed ’Daddler’, Aitken had played for the Elmbank, Thistle and Parkhouse clubs in his home town before moving to England in July 1895, joining Newcastle amid interest from Newton Heath and Preston North End.

Making a goalscoring debut in a 3-0 home win over Loughborough Town two months later, midfielder Andy helped United gain promotion to the First Division in 1897/98 - his third season as a Magpie.

Winning his first Scotland cap against England at Crystal Palace in March 1901, Aitken would finish up on the losing side at that venue in both 1905 and 1906 as United were beaten in the FA Cup Final.

However he did collect a Championship medal in 1905, making what was to be his final Magpies appearance in a 3-0 victory at Middlesbrough in October 1906.

Within a month Aitken had accepted the post of Boro player/coach, with United banking a £500 transfer fee. He then took a similar role three years later at Leicester Fosse, making his fourteenth and final Scotland appearance in April 1911.

Returning to Scotland with Dundee a month later, Andy moved on to Kilmarnock in the summer of 1912, before a groin problem forced him into retirement early in 1913.

Within a few months he was back on Tyneside when appointed manager of Gateshead Town, subsequently scouting for both Newcastle United and Arsenal.

Later entering the licensed trade, Aitken was living in Ponteland at the time of his death, in February 1955.

1933 Liam Tuohy born, East Wall, Dublin, Ireland (1960-63)

Playing at outside left for his local football side, St. Mary's and in goal for his school hurling team, Liam (nickamed Rasher) opted to pursue a career in the former sport with hometown club Shamrock Rovers.

Appearing in the European Cup against Manchester United and representing his country, Liam signed for Newcastle in May 1960 after the Magpies had faced Rovers in a friendly match at Dalymount Park - a move which meant giving up his full time job at the Guinness Brewery.

Netting twice on his home debut (a 7-2 victory over Fulham), he scored four goals in twelve games during that season but missed most of what became a relegation season for the club through injury.

Two seasons of Second Division football followed, with Tuohy appearing just three times in 1962/63 - his 42nd and final game for United coming against Bury.

A return move to Shamrock was arranged and after initially being installed as player-coach at Milltown, he took over as manager and enjoyed a run of success through to 1969, when he moved on to Dundalk.

Combining that with working as a sales manager for an ice cream firm, Tuohy also began coaching the Ireland national side in 1971. Swapping Dundalk for a further spell at Shamrock a year later he kept his three jobs, before sacrificing the national team role.

Later taking charge of Trinity College's side (playing as Dublin University), Liam managed Shelbourne during the 1981/82 season and coached Ireland' U19s for five years, until a dispute with senior team coach Jack Charlton saw him relinquish that position in 1986.

Thereafter he became Director of Football at Dublin -based club Home Farm and was often to be found coaching youngsters there until retiring in 2002.

Reflecting on his move to Tyneside many years later, Liam commented:

"It was difficult for her (his wife Sheila) at first with the kids but I found the Newcastle people to be more like the Irish than any other part of England and we have friends there to this day."

Liam passed away in August 2016 aged 83.

1988 Kris Thackray born, Newcastle.
(2003-04)

Midfielder/defender who joined United's Academy aged nine and appeared for the U17s before being released in 2004.

Trials at Scunthorpe United, Darlington, Scarborough, Derby County and Rochdale followed before Kris enrolled at Gateshead College and played for them and Chester le Street's youth side.

Gaining selection for the England College XI, Thackray caught the attention of a scout from Serie A side Reggina at a tournament in Italy and signed for them in 2008 - after compensation was paid to United.

Three years in Italy saw him fail to make a senior appearance for them as he settled in defence but was loaned out to Monopoli, Ancona, Andria and Cosenza.

Playing on trial at Huddersfield Town, Wrexham and Gateshead in 2011, Kris then resurfaced in Malta with Qormi.

Subsequently playing for German sides Alemannia Aachen and KFC Uerdingen, a return to Malta followed at Gzira United.

July 2018 found Thackray back in his native North East, signing for National North side Spennymoor Town and coaching Durham University Women's XI.

Later moving on to Morpeth Town, by early 2020 he'd been loaned out to Blyth Spartans and was also working as a football coach at his former college in Gateshead.

2021 then saw Kris announce his playing retirement.

2002 Anthony Elanga born,Malmo, Sweden. (2025-date)

Profile to follow

2005 Cathal Heffernan born, Cork, Ireland.
(2023-26)

Defender Cathal arrival from AC Milan during August 2023, following trial outings in pre-season reserve friendlies against Carlisle United and Barrow.

Represented by ex-Magpie Stephen Ireland, Heffernan's parents both featured for Ireland at the 2012 London Olympics.

Cathal's playing career began with youth side Ringmahon Rangers before signing for Cork City in 2019, debuting for their senior team two years later.

Amidst interest from several Italian clubs, a move to AC Milan followed in January 2022, although Cathal's appearances for them were confined to junior games.

Debuting competitively for United in a 0-1 PL2 loss at Reading days after signing, Heffernan combined reserve games with appearances in the UEFA Youth League - scoring against Borussia Dortmund and former club AC Milan in that competition.

A first U21 strike then gave his side a 3-2 derby away victory in March 2024.

Joining the seniors in pre-season, Cathal featured in a behind closed doors game at Adidas HQ in Germany before a substitute outing in the closing stages of a 4-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan.

Overlooked for first team duty ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, January 2026 saw him make a permanent switch to League Two Harrogate Town.

Internationally, Heffernan represented Ireland up to U19 level.

United ended their home programme in front of the smallest SJP crowd of the season - hardly surprising as this was their fifth home game in ten days.

Stan Keery replaced Jackie Milburn in the forward line, while Alf McMichael continued in an unfamiliar left wing role. There was also a rare outing for Alan Monkhouse.

Just weeks before ex-Magpie Joe Harvey relinquished the role of Barrow boss, his old club visited Holker Street.

The occasion was a joint testimonial match for Peter Wilson and Jack Keen and Jackie Milburn entertained those present with what would be his last goals in a Newcastle shirt before concluding a transfer to Linfield.

Team: Mitchell, Tate, Hughes, Davies, Milburn, Redhead, Paterson, Franks, Batty, Whitehead, Harker.

1957 On Tyneside, a 3-0 win over Newburn at SJP was enough for Ashington to retain their grip on the Northumberland Senior Cup.

9,200 were present to see goals from Colliers trio Hewison, Black and Henderson.

A difficult day at Millmoor, as United's fading hopes of promotion were ended by the Millers.

With Ron McGarry joining fellow striker Barrie Thomas on the sidelines, John McGrath was handed the number nine shirt for a second time and scored his only goal of the season.

Two years before his transfer to Newcastle, Albert Bennett featured for the Millers while Rotherham's third goal was a shot by Jimmy Blain that deflected in off Jim Iley.

The low attendance was due in part to the inclement weather and also the staging of an FA Cup Semi-Final between Liverpool and Leicester City at nearby Hillsborough that attracted a crowd of 65,000.

After successive defeats at West Brom and Fulham, United had apparently blown their chances of European qualification as they surrendered a 26 game unbeaten home run.

Spurs' second goal came from a massive kick from goalkeeper Pat Jennings that Martin Chivers forced in after one bounce.

Magpies boss Joe Harvey wasn't present, having elected to watch the Middlesbrough versus Derby County game to scout Rams prospect Kevin Hector.

With time running out and only a slender lead, Peter Beardsley and Chris Waddle frustrated the Saints with a passing move down the wing, to the delight of the crowd.

After the final whistle though, an irate Jack Charlton gave the duo a very public dressing down on the pitch for not hoofing the ball out of play when they had the chance.

The episode was later blamed as a factor in the subsequent departure of both players in search of pastures new - and trophies.

Andy Peake scored the winner in what was to be Charlton's penultimate game at their temporary home of Selhurst Park. The following season saw them at Upton Park before a 1992 Valley return.

United's five match unbeaten run was ended despite continuing the attractive style that had seen them force a 1-1 at West Ham the previous midweek.

Steve Howey appeared as a substitute in place of Andy Hunt and was red-carded for a reckless two-footed challenge.

German striker Stefan Beinlich had opened the scoring for the visitors with what would be his only senior goal in English football.

ended a run of five  defeats in all competitions, kept a first clean sheet in six league games and secured the point which removed any slight chance of relegation places.

However, that was scant consolation for the crowd as a typical end-of-season affair was played out, while both Patrick Kluivert and Laurent Robert languished on the bench.

2006 Newcastle reserves completed a full season without a home defeat after a 0-0 draw with Birmingham City at Kingston Park.

We ended having won ten and drawn four of the fourteen league games at that venue - despite fielding less first team squad players than in recent seasons and having to play on the increasingly rutted pitch that also hosted the Newcastle Falcons Rugby side.

The scene was all set for a SJP finale against Pompey to rival David Kelly's fabled 1992 winner, but the 2009 Magpies proved incapable of finding a breakthrough in this pivotal midweek game.

It could have been a different story had a front trio of Obafemi Martins, Mark Viduka and Michael Owen not wasted chances.

Owen in particular missed our best opportunity when he only had the 'keeper to beat. David James blocked easily and Alan Shearer's side inched closer to oblivion.

Less than two weeks after a disastrous derby defeat, Newcastle hit rock bottom, suffering their heaviest home loss since 1925.

0-5 down when Mathieu Debuchy looked to get himself deliberately dismissed, the margin of defeat confirmed that this was the leakiest Magpies defence in our Premier League history - with three games still remaining.

Perhaps
the least interesting aspect of this memorable mauling was Anthony Gordon's first return to Goodison Park - although most of his former fans had left by the time he came off the bench.

Rather more memorable was an incredible dribble by Alexander Isak to set up the fourth goal for Jacob Murphy - a slight deflection off a defender meaning that the Swede tragically didn't even register an assist.
