Premier League:
Brighton (a)

United's penultimate Premier League away game of the season takes them to Sussex on Sunday for a 2pm kick-off at the Amex Stadium, live on Sky Sports.

Manchester City's 1-0 home win over Wolves on Friday saw Newcastle drop one place to fourth, although the Citizens have now played a game more.

All 3,000 away tickets are sold out, with forwarding available until 9am on Sunday.

Match ticket holders can use buses and trains in the Falmer area on Sunday free of charge. The valid area for trains is bordered by Brighton, Haywards Heath, Seaford, Polegate, Eastbourne and Worthing.

The home side report that lane closures on the A27 in both directions will impact journey times on Sunday.

This will be Newcastle's eighth attempt at winning a PL fixture at this venue, having drawn four and lost the other three of their previous seven visits.

Their sole victory in 10 league and cup matches at the Amex came during the 2016/17 Championship season.

The Seagulls are bidding for a winning treble against Newcastle this season, following 1-0 PL and 2-1 FA Cup victories on Tyneside.

Team:
Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Joelinton in Brazil to rest his problematic knee. Although unlikely to play again this season, it's not totally out of the question that he will be sighted.

Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles remain out while Matt Targett has picked up a hamstring injury that may prematurely end his season.

Jason Tindall will serve a one game touchline suspension at the Amex, following his third caution of the season during that win against Ipswich.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 29/20
The draw 13/5
BHAFC win 17/10

New customers receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

BHAFC: Striker Joao Pedro remains suspended following a straight red card against Brentford.

Ferdi Kadioglu, Georginio Rutter, Adam Webster and James Milner miss out through injury, while Jason Steele, Jan Paul van Hecke and Igor Julio could return.

Ahead of our visit, Albion defeated West Ham 3-2 at home on Saturday to end a winless run of five PL games.

Former Magpie Yankuba Minteh has contributed six goals in all competitions for Albion this season, including five in the Premier League. His most recent strike came in the FA Cup on Tyneside back in March.

Referee: Craig Pawson - a fourth appointment to a Newcastle PL game this season for the South Yorkshire whistler, after the 1-0 home win over Southampton, 0-0 draw at Everton and 0-2 home defeat by West Ham.

The remarkable story
of a Wembley winner

The latest book from author Spencer Vignes is a biography of Chilean international Jorge ("George") Robledo, who arrived at St.James' Park from Barnsley along with his brother Eduardo ("Ted") during 1949.

Interviewing family members and their contemporaries, Spencer tells their largely unknown story, culminating in George's FA Cup Final winning goal for United in 1952.

Update:
Ramble on

Evolving from a fortnightly show in 2007 to the current daily offering, the Football Ramble Podcast is going out on the road for live performances, calling at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle on Saturday May 10th.

Tickets for that are available online here now and episodes of what was voted Podcast of the Year by the Football Supporters Association are online here

We had pairs of tickets to the Newcastle show to give away and asked the following question:

The Football Ramble's maiden broadcast in March 2007 coincided with Newcastle's PL defeat at a Charlton Athletic side managed by which future Magpie boss?

The answer was Alan Pardew and the
ticket winners are:

Nigel Lehmann-Taylor
Steven Sinton

U18s:
Six goal thriller

Newcastle U18s  3  Leeds United U18s  3

An equaliser scored deep into second half time added on gave Newcastle U18s a point from their penultimate league fixture of the season on Wednesday evening.

The rearranged game against Leeds took place in perfect conditions at Whitley Park; the black and whites looking to complete a seasonal double after a 5-4 win in Yorkshire.

That began well for a Magpies side retaining just three of the starting line-up that won Saturday's wear-Tyne derby - a youthful selection including two U15 players and one from the U16s, the trio all making their first U18 starts.

Visiting defender Jacob Howard nudged Jake Durrant on the left edge of the box and Kacey Wooster sent Alex Baird the wrong way from the spot with eight minutes played.

A similar incident midway through the first half saw Leeds level, Lesecond Yeutembip making illegal contact with Will Firth and Oliver Boast converting the subsequent penalty.

Two minutes after the restart Sam Alker gave the visitors the lead for the first time, placing his shot under debutant George Mair from the right side of the six yard box.

Matthew Taylor should have equalised instantly but he stabbed his effort wide of the post when well-placed.

The third penalty of the game saw Wooster score his second in the 57th minute, after a mazy run from Trevan Sanusi had been illegally halted in the box.

Leeds regained the lead in the 72nd minute after Firth centred from the right side of the area and Boast bundled home his second goal of the net.

The latter stages of the game saw Newcastle push upfield in search of an equaliser, aided by injuries to visiting players that saw the time added on extend to ten minutes.

The third leveller of the night came in the eighth minute, after the visitors were unable to clear a concerted attack on their goal, Wooster eventually forcing the ball in to complete his hat-trick and deny Leeds the victory.

Team: Mair, Johnson, Durrant, Old, Yeutembip (Epia 83), Finneran, Fitzgerald, M.Taylor (Brayson 78), Wooster, Yildiz (O'Donovan 56), Sanusi (Ferreira 56).
Sub n/u: Jones.

Booked: Mair.

England youth international goalkeeper Mair made his first appearance at this level, while there were maiden U18 starts for Thomas Old, Lesecond Yeutembip and Turkish prospect Baran Yildiz.

United's youngsters conclude their season with a home game against a Manchester City side who secured the Northern section Premier League title last Saturday.

That is confirmed as a 10.30am start on Saturday May 10th, not May 3rd as previously advertised. City contest the FA Youth Cup Final on May 5th, which looks to have prompted the change.

On This Day in History
3rd May

Born Or Died:

1922 Leonard Francis Shackleton born, Bradford. (1946-48)

The "Clown Prince of Football" moved to SJP from Bradford Park Avenue in 1946 at a cost of £13K and instantly started to repay that outlay with six goals on his home debut as Newport County were rattled 13-0 (although one of the six was netted by an opponent).

By 1948 though he'd departed for Roker Park, after his crowd-pleasing playing style failed to meet with universal approval at SJP - captain Joe Harvey expressing the opinion that the team would win nothing with him.

Just over six months after defecting to the red and whites in a £20K deal, Shack won the first of five England caps but fell foul of the FA selectors and was often overlooked.

He played out the rest of his career on wearside until forced into retirement aged 35 due to an ankle injury suffered against Arsenal - the club who had released him as a youngster.

A career as a sports journalist saw him write for the Daily Express & Sunday People, while he owned a barbers shop in mackemland and was also qualified as a boxing referee!

Len settled in Grange-over-Sands in later years and was living there at the time of his death in November 2000.

1933 Bill Tulip born, Gateshead.
(1951-56)

Reserve centre forward who failed to make a senior competitive appearance for United moving on to Darlington and forming a strike force with former Magpie Charlie Wayman.

Sadly a spinal problem caused his retirement in 1958 - and left him in plaster for six months before learning to walk again.

Later working for a Tyneside Ford dealer, Bill passed away during December 2013.

1961
Steve McClaren born, York
(2015-16, manager)

Midfielder who made over 300 appearances between 1979 and 1992 for Hull City, Derby County, Lincoln City, Bristol City and Oxford United.

Beginning his coaching career at the Manor Ground, Steve returned to Derby County in 1995 as assistant to Rams boss Jim Smith, moving on to Old Trafford in 1999.

Serving under Alex Ferguson for two years, his first managerial role came at Boro in 2001, winning the League Cup and reaching the UEFA Cup final.

Appointed England manager in 2006, Steve lasted just 16 months in post, resurfacing at Dutch club FC Twente - where he won the title with a side including Cheick Tiote.

Following an unsuccessful spell at Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg, McClaren resurfaced in England with Nottingham Forest in 2011 but returned to Twente after his City Ground misadventure lasted less than six months.

By 2013 he was on Harry Redknapp's QPR coaching staff, quickly moving on take over at Derby County and losing in the promotion playoffs that season.

The 2014/15 campaign saw the Rams among the Championship front runners until the turn of the year - when speculation that Steve would succeed Alan Pardew at Gallowgate coincided with a total loss of form by his side.

Sacked by Derby in May 2015 - just ten months after signing a new three year deal - he was presented as Magpies Head Coach within days, also joining the board.

Just six league wins from 28 Premier League games left United second bottom by mid March, when he was relieved of his role(s) after a week in limbo and immediately succeeded by Rafa Benitez.

Improbably reappointed by Derby during October 2016, McClaren survived barely five months before returning to Sky Sports and supplying more cringeworthy punditry.

He then became a coaching consultant to Maccabi Tel Aviv in August 2017 but only lasted four months before leaving.

Second tier side QPR were desperate enough in May 2018 to replace Ian Holloway with Steve and he lasted for 10 months until common sense prevailed.

Unbelievably, a fifth spell at Derby began in November 2020 as Technical Director of football to Manager Wayne Rooney but he stepped down in September 2021 after the club entered administration.

Another surprising return followed when he joined Erik ten Hag's backroom staff at Old Trafford in May 2022 and was in the dugout for our League Cup defeat by them at Wembley the following February.

Although the Red Devils retained Ten Hag after their 2024 FA Cup win, McClaren left and resurfaced as the Jamaican national team coach, where another change of accent was eagerly anticipated....

1969 Chris Zoricich born, Auckland, New Zealand (1990)

Central defender who was on the books of Leyton Orient when he appeared for New Zealand in a friendly match at SJP against Newcastle in February 1992.

However that wasn't his first experience of Tyneside, having made one appearance for our reserve side in December 1990 after being invited for a trial by Jim Smith.

Leaving Brisbane Road due to work permit difficulties, Chris was briefly with Doncaster Rovers, before moving on to Central United in his native New Zealand in 1994.

Zorro then tried his luck in Australia with the Brisbane Strikers before returning to the UK, where after turning out for Welling United, Chris spent some time on trial with Chelsea.

1997 saw him sign for Newcastle Breakers in Australia (aka Newcastle United) before settling again in England after his London -born wife became homesick in 2003.

That came after calling a halt to a 15 year international career in which he'd gained over 70 caps and captained his side many times.

After a trial at Mansfield Town, Chris played non-league football for Margate, St.Albans City, Harlow Town, Borehamwood, Heybridge Swifts and Wealdstone - also coaching at Eastlea Community School in East London.

He was also involved with a London-based taxi firm before returning to New Zealand in 2009 and becoming manager of Auckland -based side Central United a year later.

Also running a cafe in the suburb of Three Kings with his brother, Zorro later took up a coaching role with Auckland City Youth and New Zealand U17 national side.

Recently-signed custodian John Archibald was in goal for United, five days after making what was to be his only senior competitive appearance for the Magpies.

Derby County's Jimmy Moore and Ernie Simms of South Shields were on target for the League XI, who were overseen by Magpie Bill McCracken.

United became the first side to win at Maine Road since the previous November, a result that prevented City from sealing promotion and left the Magpies with a chance of Division One themselves.

However, the Citizens would go on to finish top of the table while Newcastle remained fifth - ten points behind second-placed Burnley.

An enthralling midweek game as Darren Peacock and Keith Gillespie both scored their first league goals for United, before Spurs hit back with a rapid fire trio of their own.

Pavel Srnicek was sent off for upending Nick Barmby, but Mike Hooper earned the cheers of the crowd by coming on to block Jurgen Klinsmann's penalty with his first touch.

Peter Beardsley then hit a great equaliser and both teams were applauded off.

As expected, United failed to pull off "Mission Impossible" in front of an Anfield crowd including "007", Daniel Craig.

Despite missing the prolific Fernando Torres, this proved to be a routine win for Liverpool and the home fans' taunt to Alan Shearer of "you should have stayed on the sofa" brought a rueful grin from the Newcastle boss.

He was rather less amused by the dismissal of Joey Barton however, sent off following a needless foul on Alonso and putting himself out of our final three games of the season.

Harsh words were later exchanged between manager and player, amid claims that the spat had escalated into physical contact.

Islam Slimani was over after he was banned for three matches following a charge of violent conduct.

With just a trio of games still to be played, that ended his time on Tyneside having failed to score during 130 minutes of action spread over four games.
