Premier League:

Third time lucky

Brighton  1  Newcastle  1

Match action is online here

Newcastle left the Amex Stadium on Sunday with a point that maintained fourth position in the Premier League after an 89th minute penalty conversion by Alexander Isak - their third spot kick award of the afternoon.

The previous two had come earlier in the second half as Eddie Howe's side kicked towards their own supporters, but on both occasions referee Craig Pawson's onfield decision was over-ruled by VAR operative Andy Madley.

The first came shortly after United made an initial alteration to a starting line-up unchanged from the win over Ipswich Town, introducing Anthony Gordon for Jacob Murphy.

Gordon's first involvement was to go down under challenge from Tariq Lamptey in the 57th minute, only for a review to confirm that the illegal contact was fractionally outside the Albion box - play restarting with a free kick instead.

A similar situation then saw Joe Willock tumble under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke in the 71st minute, Pawson this time invited to study the footage on the pitchside monitor; awarding a free kick to Brighton and cautioning the Newcastle player for simulation.

Attempts to wipe out the home side's first half goal from old boy Yankuba Minteh looked destined for failure until the 89th minute, when Pawson again pointed to the penalty spot - this time after a free kick right on the "D" for a foul on Harvey Barnes was taken by Fabian Schar and clearly handled by Yasin Ayari in the box.

That decision stood after a further check deemed that there was no offside call; Isak supplying a fine finish from 12 yards into the corner of the net and the game resuming after visiting players trying to retrieve the ball became embroiled in a wrestling match in the goal.

The trio of spot kick incidents contributed to nine minutes of added time during which both sides could have won it: Diego Gomez somehow putting a clear header wide following a free kick before substitute Callum Wilson's fierce first-time effort was tipped over by Bart Verbruggen.

United dominated and should have been ahead at the break but their failure to provide decent crosses or final balls in the opening half left worthwhile chances in short supply and top scorer Isak a peripheral figure.

Instead they trailed to an inevitable goal from Minteh -  reluctantly sold to the Seagulls ahead of the season to comply with PSR requirements and beating Nick Pope here with a left-footed shot that flicked in off Dan Burn.

Minteh's post-goal gestures to the away end were bizarre, initially emulating the non-celebration of his SJP goal two months earlier before changing to random finger pointing at his shirt, both sets of fans and the pitch. One of his team mates thankfully intervened and shoved him away before the incident escalated any further.

That goal had come in the 28th minute, not long after Willock had come close to finding the net at the end of a dash from the halfway line reminiscent of his early Toon career - ignoring the waiting Isak but then clipping his effort narrowly over the crossbar.

United's attacks were more constant after the break and Harvey Barnes caused problems for the home defence on both flanks, but couldn't find his team mates in front of goal.

The Seagulls claimed a penalty at the other end with ten minutes remaining as Sandro Tonali's legs got tangled but nothing was given on the pitch or off it this time.

Then came Isak's penalty conversion to register his 23rd Premier League goal of the season, after which both sides tried unsuccessfully to collect three points to further enhance their respective European aspirations.

Neither will have been happy with a draw but the visitors at least left a ground they've routinely struggled at with something tangible to show for their second half uplift - we're at the stage in the season where points rather than performances are all that really matter.

Newcastle stay fourth with one point less than Manchester City and ahead of Chelsea only on goals scored - their 3-1 defeat of a hungover Liverpool in the teatime game bringing them level on points and goal difference with United.

Next Sunday's High Noon showdown at St. James' Park against Enzo Maresca's Blues now looks crucial - United having a free week to prepare while a shadow Chelsea side take a 4-1 first leg lead to Swedes Djurgaardens in the Europa Conference League Semi-final on Thursday.

Full match report to follow.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"It's probably a good point for us, we came here to try and win. I thought it was a good performance from us, we were pretty good today without being at our absolute best.

"We were perhaps disappointed with how we created around the box - our final pass and final cross wasn't at its highest level. But I thought we had the mainstay of possession and chances in the game.

"We were disappointed with how we conceded - that's the biggest disappointment for us.

"I thought we did enough to definitely warrant a point, if not more. We were the team trying to win the game.

"We were tactically very good. I give full credit to the players because Brighton are a difficult team to stop and not only that, but how we chased the game as well. Sometimes that's a very difficult thing to do, but we did it with intelligence and ultimately got our reward.

"There was quite a long wait before the third penalty was called and I thought the third one was a stonewall penalty. I think that's what VAR is there for.

"We were chasing, desperately trying to win. We were going for it which I think we have to in our position and I'm proud of how we fought back in the game."

"It's all to play for. We have three very tough games in different ways. Two of them are at home and we hope that can make the difference.

"I've no major criticism other than maybe we were not creative enough and not at our clinical best in front of goal.

"When you're 1-0 down you have to be grateful for the point. We're certainly stronger with it than without it."

"I felt that months back
(the Champions League places wouldn't be settled until the final day of the season.) We've got top quality teams fighting for a massive prize. We just hope we're in there."

Stats:

The Magpies played their first draw in all competitions since sharing six goals with Liverpool at SJP in the Premier League back in December. Since then all 27 games (20 in the PL) have ended in a victory or a defeat for Eddie Howe's side.

United took their 150th PL penalty kick and Alexander Isak claimed the 121st successful conversion - his 11th in that competition from 12 attempts.

This latest success took him one ahead of Callum Wilson, with Peter Beardsley (14) and Alan Shearer (37) ahead.

Isak has now scored at least once in the Premier League against the other 19 sides currently in that division plus former top flight clubs Burnley and Sheffield United. He faced Luton Town and Leeds United in the PL without netting against either.

The Swede moved on 23 PL goals for the season, the highest total by a Magpie since Alan Shearer in 2001/02 netted the same amount.

Newcastle made an eighth unsuccessful attempt at winning a PL fixture at the Amex Stadium, having now drawn five and lost the other three of their visits.

Their sole victory in 11 league and cup matches at this venue came during the 2016/17 Championship season.

Newcastle's top-flight record against Brighton leaves much to be desired, taking just 14 points from a possible 48 - winning two, drawing eight and losing the other six.

Alexander Isak's goal was the first that Newcastle have ever scored at the South End of the Amex  Stadium, in front of the away section. The other five all came at the North End, furthest away from the Toon travellers.

Yankuba Minteh
scored his second goal of the season against Newcastle, having also found the net during the FA Cup Fifth Round meeting of his current and previous sides at Gallowgate back in March. The Gambian didn't play in the Premier League game on Tyneside last October.

Newly-crowned Division One champions Newcastle visited Ayresome Park to provide the opposition in a benefit match for Boro trainer Charlie Cole.

The hosts - who had won the Second Division title and secured promotion - believed that they'd taken an early lead when George Camsell's shot looked to have gone under the crossbar and bounced back out of the net.

Team: Wilson, Maitland, Little, MacKenzie, Spencer, Curry, Low, Urwin, Gallacher, McDonald, Seymour.

1927 At SJP meanwhile, United Reserves lifted the Infirmary Cup following a 5-0 win over Consett.

Loughlin gave the Magpies a 1-0 interval lead before Lang and a Smith treble completed the scoring.

Newcastle's final game of the season saw Hughie Gallacher notch his 23rd and 24th goals of the campaign.

The wee Scots lad was in the right place to head the rebound home after McDonald's effort from an Urwin centre struck the woodwork.

And Gallacher then wrapped things up late on as the visitors waited in vain for an offside decision.

The visitors were already confirmed as Champions, going into this penultimate game of the season five points ahead of Arsenal.

FA Cup winners Newcastle meanwhile made slight amends for a 1-8 reverse at Goodison the previous October - aided by the absence of Everton's top scorer, Dixie Dean.

Newcastle visited London Road to provide the opposition in a benefit match for the Professional Footballers (Peterborough) Testimonial Fund, who dispensed funds to many ex-footballers.

The first to benefit was former Magpie, Andy Donaldson.

Joe Harvey's side gained some revenge for a 0-5 FA Cup Fourth Round loss at Carrow Road two months earlier by completing the league double over the Canaries.

Ron McGarry scored despite wearing odd boots - putting a size bigger than usual on his left foot to lessen the pain of a swollen toe.

1968 Manchester United (a) 0-6

Division One
P41, 41pts, 9th/22

A hat-trick from George Best, two from Kidd and one from Sadler as Alex Stepney was hardly called into action.

This was in stark contrast to the Red Devils' previous game when their goalkeeper had conceded six to West Bromwich Albion.

1974 Liverpool (n)

(0-0)
FA Cup Final
Keegan(58,88), Heighway(75)
100,000
Bruce Forsyth may have conducted the pre-match community singing at Wembley Stadium, but this was anything but a "good game, good game" for United.

Losing their unbeaten Wembley record at the sixth time of asking, Joe Harvey's side made it to halftime without conceding, but that only delayed the inevitable.

Alec Lindsay thought he'd put the Reds ahead only to see a questionable offside chalk his effort off, but Kevin Keegan (pictured below) struck twice and Steve Heighway once.

United were desperately disappointing, with Malcolm Macdonald never looking like maintaining his record of having scored in every round of the competition.

Future Liverpool legends Terry McDermott and Alan Kennedy were in the Magpies line-up.

Off the pitch there are a wealth of tales that have now passed into legend: United fans drowning out the cheers as Emlyn Hughes lifted the Cup, emotional scenes in Trafalgar Square, post-match brown ale drinking in a graveyard, overnight bus trips (fish & chips for breakfast, dinner and tea, apparently...)

In the end though, the only Wembley success in black & white was Brendan Foster, winning a pre-match race in a Toon vest.

1977 Leicester City (a)

Earle(90)

Visiting custodian Mick Mahoney made a fine penalty save to deny Frank Worthington after 30 minutes.

Stonewalling for a point, Newcastle were raging when Steve Earle bundled the ball home via his hand in the closing seconds - the scorer later admitting to his indiscretion.

Having lost just once in twelve games as they dragged themselves out of the relegation places, United were out-gunned in their last home game by an Addicks side fighting their own survival battle.

"I thought we were a disgrace" said manager Willie McFaul afterwards.

Travelling Toon hordes drank Cleethorpes dry, staging a midweek shindig before and after their heroes confirmed promotion to the Premier League.

Those celebrations were on temporary hold after a tense first half, before Andy Cole shot past Mariners 'keeper Rhys Wilmot within 20 seconds of the restart.

David Kelly then sealed promotion and the title when finishing from a tight angle in the closing seconds with an effort that Wayne Routledge emulated at Plymouth some 17 years later when United went up again as champions.

Both United goals sparked pitch invasions, but it was mostly good-natured and both fans and players partied after full-time, Kevin Keegan famously pictured wearing a crown that was plonked on his head by a supporter.

TV cameras entered the dressing room post-match to capture KK getting a good soaking and Sir John Hall promise to give "Man United" a "run for their money". Heady stuff.

2002 Newcastle won 3-2 at Old Trafford in the first leg of their U17 playoff Final.

Goals from Calvin Zola and Lewis Guy (2) put the young Magpies three up at half time, the hosts replying through Kieran Richardson and David Poole - the latter on 88 minutes

Not without precedent at this particular venue, the referee produced an astonishing five minutes of injury time but the Toon youngsters held on for a tremendous victory in front of around 1,000 spectators.

The visitors were without midfielder Ross Gardner due to an England U17 call-up.

Team: Collin, Brittain, Gate, Webster, Carr, Taylor, McDermott, Beaumont, Guy, Zola, O'Brien.

An Alan Shearer-less United won their first away league game for nearly six months as a seven-game winless run thankfully came to an end.

The result was as unexpected as Fulham's 4-1 win at SJP back in November as the victory saw United creep back up the table above Birmingham and Blackburn into 12th spot.

Darren Ambrose, Patrick Kluivert and Shola Ameobi put us three goals to the good before Tomasz Radzinski's late consolation for the home side. Sections of this victory were filmed and later cut into the "Goal" film.

2006 The Premier League board rejected the bid for dispensation from Newcastle to allow Glenn Roeder to become their permanent manager, releasing this statement:

The Premier League Board has considered Newcastle United's inquiry regarding the potential appointment of Glenn Roeder as their Manager.

Premier League Rules require that Managers hold the UEFA Pro Licence and do not provide for any dispensation.

The only way the Board would be prepared to allow Newcastle United to appoint Glenn Roeder as Manager without the Pro License is if so directed by member Clubs.

In the event of permission being sought, sufficient support from Clubs would have to be obtained and a formal resolution tabled at the forthcoming Premier League AGM.

That final paragraph proved key - member clubs allowing special dispensation on the grounds that ill health had prevented Glenn from completing the Pro Licence that he'd originally begun in 2003.

2010 The U18s wrapped up their home league programme with a 4-1 win over Leeds. Ryan McGorrigan scored twice, while Sammy Ameobi and Brad Inman were also on target.

2011 Twelve months on and the U18s were away at Sheffield United to close off the season with a 1-1 draw - Ryan McGorrigan finding the net once more for Newcastle.

Having conceded ten goals in three games, Newcastle at least stopped the rot at the Boleyn Ground.

However, away wins for Aston Villa and Wigan ensured that the spectre of relegation remained with two games to play. The Latics and mackems had three left and were three points and one point behind, respectively.

A linesman's slip may well have cost Alan Pardew's side the win though: a shot from Papiss Cisse was judged not to have crossed the line before Winston Reid cleared the ball.

One of four TV replays from different angles looked to show the whole of the ball over the line - the linesman slipping over at that point, so unable to award a goal.

What would be the final home game of the Rafa Benitez era was eventful on and off the field, due in no small part to the TV-inspired 7.45pm Saturday start time.

Newcastle more than matched the title challengers: twice coming from behind before a dubious free kick allowed Liverpool to steal a barely deserved win.

Although Manchester City remained strong favourites, Liverpool fans - including some in home areas - celebrated this victory as if they were Champions.

"Europe again, Ole Ole" was the chant from the away end at Turf Moor, as United dealt a sizeable blow to Burnley's hopes of avoiding relegation and enhanced their own European qualification bid.

Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak all added to their goal tallies with Isak also missing from the spot before Dara O'Shea netted a late consolation for Vincent Kompany's Clarets.
