2025/26:
Celtic (a) on sale now

Newcastle have confirmed a second pre-season kickabout, travelling to the Scottish Champions Celtic on Saturday July 19th.

That's a
3pm kick-off and the Magpies have been given 7,200 places, which are now on sale to 2025/26 season ticket holders with 35 points or more.

As was the case for March's Wembley visit, away travel groups won't be in use and seats are individually selected from a seating plan. That was visible on a smartphone but some desktop users report that they struggled to see it.

It's also worth repeating that more than one section is on sale, but in order to see the others, you need to click on the arrow to the right of the screen.

NB: some seats in areas 118 and 119 in the usual away corner have restricted views due to a pillar. These look to be included in the 1,200 that NUFC will be selling for a slightly cheaper price after the full price ones sell out.

NUFC state that this game will be
excluded from the usual away ticket transfer scheme.

Prices: £25 adults, over 65s £17, 13-16s £17, U13s £12.

(There's no relevant scheduled rail work that weekend).

This will be United's first game in the East end of Glasgow since a 1-2 loss in August 2004. That was the third visit of the Premier League era, following a 0-2 reverse in July 1999 and a 1-1 draw on a red-hot day in August 1995.

The most recent meeting of the two sides took place at SJP during August 2007, ending in a 4-1 win for the Magpies.

For Eddie Howe it's a belated opportunity to lead a side out at Parkhead, having rejected the chance to become Celtic boss during 2021 - supposedly after failing to reach an agreement on the appointment of his backroom staff.

Chelsea (h) ticket issue

We've been made aware of some problems downloading match tickets for Sunday's game to Google wallets.

Fans contacting NUFC on Tuesday were told that the issue was known and should be sorted "in a few days."

The last push:
Howay the lad

The countdown is on to try and propel Andrew Cushin's brand-new album "Love is For Everyone" to the highest possible position in this week's UK album chart.

The 25 year-old Tynesider follows up his 2023 debut with a second collection of original material, available to buy now in download, CD and vinyl versions online
here

Andrew will also be returning to Newcastle's Bridge Hotel - where the album cover photo was shot - this coming Thursday between 7pm and 11pm to play some tunes and sell copies of the record. Entry is free of charge.

We have a limited edition signed vinyl copy of "Love is For Everyone" as a free-to-enter competition prize. To be in with a chance of winning it, simply predict the final score when Newcastle play Chelsea this coming Sunday.

Email [email protected] with your answer by 11pm on  Saturday May 10th, subject line of AC

No age limit, open to all but delivery only to a UK address. One entry each please. In the event of a tie, one winner will be randomly drawn from all correct entries received.

PS: Find Andrew
's Radio Newcastle interview on Sunday online here (starts at 1 hour 13 minutes).

PPS: Cushin's quest for world domination knows no bounds - he's talking about the Toon in the latest 442 Magazine.

Evolving from a fortnightly show in 2007 to the current daily offering, the Football Ramble Podcast is going out on the road for live performances, calling at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle this coming Saturday, May 10th.

Tickets for that are available online here now and episodes of what was voted Podcast of the Year by the Football Supporters Association are online here

We had pairs of tickets to the Newcastle show to give away and asked the following question:

The Football Ramble's maiden broadcast in March 2007 coincided with Newcastle's PL defeat at a Charlton Athletic side managed by which future Magpie boss?

The answer was Alan Pardew and the
ticket winners are:

Nigel Lehmann-Taylor

The latest book from author Spencer Vignes is a biography of Chilean international Jorge ("George") Robledo, who arrived at St.James' Park from Barnsley along with his brother Eduardo ("Ted") during 1949.

Interviewing family members and their contemporaries, Spencer tells their largely unknown story, culminating in George's FA Cup Final winning goal for United in 1952.

Run Geordie Run:
On the road again

NUFC.com reader Mark Allison aka Run Geordie Run continues his coast to coast trek across the USA, encountering cooler conditions on day 5 in Pennsylvania.

A 3,200 mile route to Huntington Beach in just 100 days takes him through conditions ranging from the chills in the Rockies to the searing heat of Death Valley.

Mark's motivation is to raise funds for St.Benedicts Hospice - a cause that has great personal significance. If you're able to contribute, then this can be done online here

Thanks to everyone who has donated thus far, the £15K mark has been surpassed - that's £25% of the target amount for this run.

The Run Geordie Run home page is online here with links to his various social media accounts and details of his fundraising runs both past and present.

CFC: To follow

Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, Chelsea take a 4-1 first leg lead to Swedes Djurgaardens in the Europa Conference League Semi-final on Thursday.

A 2-1 success at Fulham in their most recent PL away game ended a winless sequence on the road in that competition stretching to eight games (five losses, three draws).

Referee:
John Brooks - fourth posting of the season for the Leicestershire official and a second in the PL after the 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Brooks also took charge of the 2-0 Carabao Cup success at Arsenal and the Final at Wembley.

On This Day in History

Born Or Died:

1953 Graeme Souness born, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Mgr 2004-06)

Not missed....

Having served Spurs, the smoggies, Liverpool, Sampdoria and Rangers as a player, Souness then managed at Ibrox and Anfield before joining Galatasaray.

A return to these shores came in 1996 with Southampton, although he just managed just one season at the Saints before moving overseas again, with Torino and Benfica.

March 2000 saw him take over at Blackburn Rovers, steering them back to the Premier League and winning the League Cup.

Newcastle turned to him to fill the void left by Bobby Robson's enforced departure in September 2004, Souness watching his former side lose 3-0 to his future one from an Executive Box at SJP before taking over.

His first season saw Newcastle progress to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and Quarter Finals of the UEFA, but defeats in both to Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon within four days were major setbacks.

Craig Bellamy returned from his Celtic loan and was sold on to Blackburn before the start of the next season - having fallen out with Souness over his place in the side and other disciplinary-related transgressions.

His influence was brought to bear on other transfers, with Patrick Kluivert, Aaron Hughes, Andy O'Brien, Laurent Robert and Jermaine Jenas also departing.

Loan deals also saw James Milner and Nicky Butt depart as Emre, Craig Moore, Albert Luque, Michael Owen and Nobby Solano were added to January buys Amdy Faye, Celestine Babayaro and Jean-Alain Boumsong (the latter deemed not good enough for Newcastle by Bobby Robson months earlier).

By February 2006 though, Souness was gone - defeat at Manchester City leaving United fifteenth with fan unrest increasing since a particularly gutless League Cup defeat against a second-choice Wigan Athletic side.

While the fitness of Owen and Luque made his job more difficult, Souness was ultimately betrayed by many of those who he'd brought in to the SJP dressing room.

He became a familiar feature on our TV screens as a Sky Sports pundit, where he remained consistently charmless when discussing the Magpies.

Souness did show a more caring side in 2023, completing a relay swim of the English Channel and raising over £1m for Debra UK - a charity supporting those affected by epidermolysis bullosa (EB).

2013
Death of Steve Carney, aged 55.

Pancreatic cancer tragically claimed the defender who made his name in the famous Blyth Spartans FA Cup side of 1978 before moving to Gallowgate.

A season-ending loss at Hyde Road for Newcastle following four successive wins - including a 5-1 home victory over the Citizens less than a week earlier.

City were victorious despite playing with ten men for over an hour after Max Woosnam was injured.

1922
At St. James' Park meanwhile, the Reserves beat West Stanley 3-0 in their final North Eastern League game of the season.

Despite victory however, they missed out on the title by a single point to Carlisle.

Clark, Swan (penalty) and Hampson were all on target.

A fifth place finish was Newcastle's best outcome to a season since the 1926/27 title-winning campaign.

Despite their SJP success however, the Tangerines were relegated to the second tier after both Wolves and Leicester City also won.

Asquith(2,14,34), Steele(20)

United provided the opposition in a benefit match at Oakwell for Tykes forward Beaumont Asquith, who netted a first half hat trick.

The conclusion of the game saw Barnsley presented with the Third Division (North) Championship shield and medals.

Asquith received £250 from the proceeds of the game but within days had his transfer request granted and left the club.

Joining Manchester United, he played just once before the outbreak of war saw league football suspended. By 1945 he had returned to Barnsley.

With everything to play for after a scoreless first leg on Tyneside, Didier Drogba broke Newcastle hearts with a goal in each half at a packed Stade Velodrome.

A non-challenge from Hugo Viana allowed the home side to counter attack, Matthieu Flamini
supplying Drogba to shoot past Shay Given after shrugging off Aaron Hughes.

United attempted to get back into the tie and had their moments after the break, with Lee Bowyer carelessly shooting wide and penalty claims when Shola Ameobi was impeed.

Slack marking from a free kick near the end settled it though, with Given then blocking another effort as Drogba went for a treble.

Future Magpie Habib Beye appeared for l'OM and also started in the final, but finished on the losing side as Valencia triumphed 2-0 in the Swedish city of Gothenburg.

A 1-1 draw for Stoke City at the mackems saw Newcastle drop one place into 17th, just three points clear of a Wigan side with a game in hand.

Reading and QPR were already condemned to relegation but no less than seven clubs including United were in danger of the drop.

2021 Almost four years to the day since promotion celebrations were followed by HMRC searches on club offices, Newcastle confirmed that the matter was concluded:

"HMRC has today given formal confirmation that it is discontinuing the four-year long criminal investigation into the tax treatment of agents/players payments involving Newcastle United Football Club.”

Mike Ashley issued this statement:

"After four years of the club being subjected to this investigation, I am pleased that the criminal investigation has now been discontinued.

"It is now time for the dark forces that are preventing this football club from becoming the powerhouse that the fans deserve, to step aside.”
