Chelsea (h)

Sunday sees the Magpies play their penultimate PL home game of the season, hosting the Blues in a Noon kick-off that's live on TNT Sports.

Manchester City's failure to win at basement club Southampton on Saturday opens the door for the winners of the match to go third, behind Arsenal.

Newcastle go in search of their sixth successive home league victory since losing 1-2 to Fulham in February.

They've won 11 times SJP in the PL this season - matching the 2023/24 total. They last managed 12 in 2022/23, but before that one has to go back to the 2002/03 campaign, when racking up 15.

If you're anywhere near Waterstones at the Monument, ex-Magpie Paul Ferris is signing copies of his new book, "Once Upon a Toon" from 11am.

(We'll have copies of the book to give away next week).

NUFC confirm that all home ticket holders entering SJP between 10am and 11am will receive a voucher for a free drink that must be redeemed by 11.30am.

Team:
Lewis Hall and Matt Targett remain unavailable while Jamaal Lascelles is back in full training. The issues that affected Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier at Brighton aren't expected to affect their availability for Sunday.

Joelinton has returned and may yet play some part in the remaining three games of the season, spending time in Brazil and then having a knee injection in Barcelona.

Coach Jason Tindall returns after a one game touchline ban prompted by racking up three yellow cards.

PL table:

CFC: Wesley Fofana, Omari Kellyman and Christopher Nkunku remain out, while Marc Guiu is doubtful.

Ahead of their visit to SJP, a 1-0 home win over Swedish side Djurgaardens on Thursday completed a 5-1 aggregate success and booked a spot in the Europa Conference League Final.

A 2-1 success at Fulham in Chelsea's last PL away game ended a winless sequence on the road in that competition stretching to eight games (five losses, three draws).

Referee:
John Brooks - fourth posting of the season for the Leicestershire official and a second in the PL after the 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Brooks also took charge of the 2-0 Carabao Cup success at Arsenal and the Final at Wembley.

Newcastle U18s  3  Manchester City U18s  3

Match action is online here

Newcastle U18s concluded their U18 Premier League season on Saturday by sharing six goals with North Section winners Manchester City at a sun-soaked Little Benton.

Seeking their 22nd successive league win, the Citizens led at half time thanks to Christian Dunbar-McDonald, who danced through the home defence in the eighth minute.

The young Magpies equalised with a fine team worked goal in the 56th minute: Matheos Ferreira crossing from the right side of the area and Henry Johnson knocking it down for Kacey Wooster to notch his tenth of the season.

And three minutes later United led when Wooster's shot from the left was palmed out by Max Hudson for Matheos Ferreira to stroke home from close range.

The visitors levelled on 69 minute when Finlay Gorman's right wing corner was headed in unopposed by Leke Drake and substitute Gorman then beat Aidan Harris from distance ten minutes later to restore City's lead.

Beaten 1-7 in the corresponding game earlier in the season, Newcastle's late pressure was rewarded with an equaliser in the final seconds of normal time, Matty Taylor driving through a crowd of players from inside of the box.

Team: Harris, Shahar, Cogdon, Johnson, Epia, Finneran, Ferreira, Munda, Wooster (Brayson 77), O'Donovan (Taylor 77), Sanusi (Fitzgerald 66).
Subs n/u: Jones, Durrant.

Booked: O'Donovan, Finneran, Cogdon.

Chris Moore's side ended the season fifth in the table, three points ahead of the mackems who lost 1-3 at Manchester United in their final game on Saturday.

City's season continues when they meet South Section winners Aston Villa with the national title at stake - Villa defeated them 3-1 in the FA Youth Cup Final on Monday.

Badge re-imagined

NUFC have announced plans to alter the club crest from the current version, with an initial consultation exercise in the form of an online survey for ST holders and members.

That dropped into inboxes on Friday, with a cut-off point for completed entries of next Friday (May 16th),

A subsequent survey is promised following a fan workshop staged at SJP and online this Wednesday (May 14th).

Senior Cup warning

This season's Northumberland Senior Cup Final between Morpeth Town and Heaton Stannington takes place at Gallowgate on Wednesday night, May 14th.

That's a 7.30pm kick-off and spectators can gain access via turnstiles at the East Stand. Prices are £8 adults, £4 concessions and £2 U18s.

Be aware that payment is strictly cash only - no cards or any other payment method will be accepted.

2025/26:
Celtic (a) on sale now

Newcastle have confirmed a second pre-season kickabout, at Scottish Champions Celtic on Saturday July 19th.

That's a 3pm kick-off and the Magpies have been given 7,200 places, which are now on sale to 2025/26 season ticket holders with 8 points or more.

As was the case for March's Wembley visit, away travel groups won't be in use and seats are individually selected from a seating plan. That was visible on a smartphone but some desktop users report that they struggled to see it.

It's also worth repeating that more than one section is on sale, but in order to see the others, you need to click on the arrow to the right of the screen.

NB: some seats in areas 118 and 119 in the usual away corner have restricted views due to a pillar. These look to be included in the 1,200 that NUFC will be selling for a slightly cheaper price after the full price ones sell out.

NUFC state that this game will be excluded from the usual away ticket transfer scheme.

Prices: £25 adults, over 65s £17, 13-16s £17, U13s £12.

(There's no relevant scheduled rail work that weekend).

This will be United's first game in the East end of Glasgow since a 1-2 loss in August 2004. That was the third visit of the Premier League era, following a 0-2 reverse in July 1999 and a 1-1 draw on a red-hot day in August 1995.

The most recent meeting of the two sides took place at SJP during August 2007, ending in a 4-1 win for the Magpies.

For Eddie Howe it's a belated opportunity to lead a side out at Parkhead, having rejected the chance to become Celtic boss during 2021 - supposedly after failing to reach an agreement on the appointment of his backroom staff.

Premier League:
Arsenal (a) ticket update

NUFC confirm that tickets for the Premier League fixture at the Emirates will come in digital format, to be sent out via email on Monday May 12th.

Ticket forwarding will be open at Thursday May 15th at 4.30pm and close on Sunday May 18th at 11.30am.

If you are intending to forward your ticket (limit of two per season) then don't download the ticket, otherwise it will need to be reissued - which is a pain in the a**e....

Mark Allison aka Run Geordie Run continues his coast to coast trek across the USA, Friday (aka day 9) bringing him towards the Appalachian Mountains.

He's now completed over 200 miles of the 3,200 mile route to Huntington Beach, raising funds for St.Benedicts Hospice - a cause that has great personal significance. If you're able to contribute, then this can be done online here

Thanks to everyone who has donated thus far; the £15K raised is £25% of his target amount for this run.

Miodrag Pivas
(Willem II):
The usual unused bench place for Pivas as his current side lost 1-2 at home to Heracles in the Eredivisie on Friday.

With two games to play, Willem II are condemned to a bottom three finish, either in the relegation playoff place that they currently occupy or one of the two automatic relegation spots.

Travis Hernes

Viborg (a) Danish SuperLiga, Sunday. With three games left, Aab remain embroiled in the relegation play-offs.

Born Or Died:

1936 James Wilfred Humble born, Ashington. (1953-55)

Wilf joined United as a left back, but was converted to a left winger at Gallowgate.

Two seasons at SJP saw him fail to win a professional deal and he returned to his hometown club - who were by then managed by former Magpie, Dave Davidson.

Reverting to left back at Portland Park, a run of good performances saw Wilf join Mansfield Town in 1959, formed a defensive partnership with the fantastically-named Colin Toon.

Staying at Field Mill until 1966, Humble settled in Nottinghamshire following his retirement and passed away in 1985.

United faced the Southern League Champions in a friendly at Copenhagen's Oster Alle. Both sides were in the city for a series of exhibition matches against local opposition.

It's reported that the Saints had a number of injuries and asked Newcastle if they could borrow two players from the local B93 club. That was turned down.

1922 South Shields (h)

Hudspeth (33pen), Aitken(

Despite losing at SJP, South Shields retained the Ingham Infirmary Cup on aggregate - having won the first leg 3-0 at their Horsley Hill ground.

At the time, the visitors played in the Second Division while Newcastle were in the First.

Team: Bradley, Russell, Hudspeth, Curry, Spencer, Mooney, Aitken, Swan, Clarke, McDonald, Mitchell.

1922 Less than a week after the end of the season, the Magpies announced their retained list for the following campaign - dispensing with the services of long-serving goalkeeper Jimmy Lawrence after 15 years.

The 43 year-old was transfer listed and by the following season had been installed as player-manager of South Shields.

This win kept United's slim promotion hopes alive, with five games still to play.

However just one more victory would see the Magpies finish in fifth, ten points behind Burnley in the second promotion place.

Following victories over Linfield and Ballymena, United's post-season tour of Ireland reached Dublin - and a meeting with the League of Ireland Shels at Dalymount Park.

Magpies 'keeper Jack Fairbrother denied Shels' Paddy Kinsella by saving his penalty attempts in both halves. The game was preceded by a two minute silence in memory of former Shels player and secretary James Rowan.

Team: Fairbrother, Cowell, Craig, Harvey, Brennan, Smith, Sibley, Stobbart, Milburn, Taylor, McCall.

1950 Ayr United (Scotland) (n) 2-1 (1-0)

The Magpies faced The Honest Men at Ashington's Portland Park in what was a benefit game for the local branch of the YMCA.

Jackie Milburn had been the driving force for the game to be played, but was unable to attend due an England call-up.

His place up front was taken by Ashington native Doug Graham, while fellow Magpie Benny Craig appeared for the visitors.

Mr J Patterson of Newbiggin was the match referee.

Team: Lowery, Cowell, Batty, Stokoe, Smith, Crowe, Walker, Taylor, Graham, Hannah, Mitchell.

1954 North Shields beat Whitley Bay 2-0 at St. James' Park to win the Northumberland Senior Cup, the Robins avenging their defeat in the 1953 final by Whitley.

12,204 fans were present to see goals from McKenna and Johnson take the trophy back to Appleby Park.

1961 Northern Ireland suffered their tenth consecutive international defeat, beaten 1-2. by West Germany in Berlin. United's Dick Keith played in defence.

A decade after he left the club, Jackie Milburn was awarded a testimonial game and a healthy SJP crowd gave him a hero's reception.

Two games were played that night; a 30 minute affair between "Newcastle Wembley Heroes" and "Guest Stars" in which Jackie opened the scoring after 50 seconds and went on to complete his hat-trick.

The Stars replied through Ivor Broadis, Len Shackleton and Tom Finney.

Team: Fairbrother, Cowell, Corbett, Harvey, Brennan, Crowe, Walker, Taylor, Milburn, McMichael, Mitchell.

Stars: John Thompson, David Craig, George Hardwick, Stan Anderson, Bob Hardisty, Ron Lewin, George Wardle, Len Shackleton, Alan Ashman, Ivor Broadis, Tom Finney.

The main game between Milburn's XI and an International selection was intended to be a 90 minute affair but ended 20 minutes early due to heavy rain.

Milburn: Gordon Marshall, Cec Irwin, Frank Clark, Dave Elliott, George Kinnell, Jim Iley, George Herd, Wyn Davies, Jackie Milburn, Neil Martin, Pop Robson.

International: Tony Waiters, Jimmy Armfield, Shay Brennan, Pat Crerand, John McGrath, Nobby Stiles, Alan Suddick, George Eastham, Bobby Charlton, Ferenc Puskas, George Mulhall.
