Newcastle took a colossal step towards securing Champions League football next season at St.James' Park on Sunday afternoon, scoring goals in the opening and closing stages of the game to defeat a ten man Chelsea side.

Less than two minutes had gone when Sandro Tonali flicked home at the Leazes End, before Bruno Guimaries hoisted his shot into the Gallowgate net in the final seconds of normal time to seal victory and move his side into third spot.

On identical points and goal difference with the visitors at kick-off, United failed to build on that early lead but were handed a further advantage when a yellow card shown to Nicolas Jackson for bludgeoning Sven Botman was upgraded to a red in the 35th minute after a pitchside VAR review.

Botman was one of two changes to the starting line-up that drew 1-1 at Brighton; brought into a three man defence at the expense of Kieran Trippier while Anthony Gordon replaced Joe Willock - neither of the two players omitted making the bench due to fitness concerns.

The hosts were unable to press home their numerical superiority before the break and found Chelsea a rather different prospect after the interval, Cole Palmer pushing into the attack and his colleagues pressing Jacob Murphy on the right hand side of the home defence.

That was exacerbated by the replacement of Botman by Miley and after an uncomfortable 10 minutes, Emil Krafth appeared from the bench to take over at right back - Gordon's exit allowing Harvey Barnes switch flanks to the left and Murphy be reinstated on the opposite wing.

A home crowd who had roared their heroes on to the field grew increasingly tense as United dropped deeper and deeper and conceded a worrying number of corner kicks.

Nick Pope denied both Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez, while
forgettable shooting and poor passing left United unable to exploit occasional sights of goal at the other end.

Bruno wastefully attempted to break the net with a first time volley from almost in the six yard box before Chelsea substitute Reece James botched a presentable header.

Daylight was belatedly put between the sides though - on both the field and the league table - in the last seconds of normal time, Bruno atoning for his earlier profligacy with a shot from the edge of the box that flicked off a defender before looping over the helpless Robert Sanchez.

That clinching goal was scored from not far off the spot that Alan Shearer had memorably netted against the same opponents back in April 2004 - and equally celebrated - although we will admit to concerns that Bruno would get a second yellow after uprooting the Strawberry corner flag and raising it to the heavens in celebration.

The basis for this deserved victory came from United's fast start and while the red card aided our cause, referee John Brooks struggled at times to deal with the cowardly antics of the visiting side, led by pantomime villain Cucurella.

Given some of what went on here and the furious response of Fabian Schar to one sly dig in his direction, the absence of Joelinton may actually have been a blessing - tempting as it was to imagine him wading in to seek vengeance....

Newcastle's Champions League aspirations then received a further boost after Leicester City took a point from their visit to the City Ground - a result that leaves Nottingham Forest four points behind the black and whites.

The weekend's fixtures concluded with Arsenal sharing four goals at Anfield, leaving them just two points clear of United ahead of next Sunday's visit to the Emirates.

Ex-Magpie Mikel Merino will miss that reunion with his old team though, following his dismissal at Liverpool.

The prospect of finishing as runners-up is an enticing one, but regardless of what happens at Arsenal, the task of staying in the top five will be accomplished by defeating Everton at Gallowgate on the final day of the season.

Full time saw SJP echo to Blur's "Parklife", swiftly followed by "Chelsea Dagger". It's fair to say that Newcastle supporters left with a sense of enormous wellbeing....

Missing from the squad due to injury, Joelinton was present to cheer on his colleagues, resplendent in a 1995/96 home shirt complete with "Shearer 9" decals.

Following last weekend's Rugby League Magic Weekend, the efforts of Wor Flags resulted in a fine spectacle to welcome the teams to the field, crucially boosting the volume levels to offset the tragically early KO time.

Eddie Howe:

"The first half we were really, really good. The sending-off changed the game, and with the scoreline it became a tricky second half for us mentally. The message was to attack but on the pitch it felt different. Chelsea changed and tweaked things and made it difficult for us tactically, so congratulations to them, but we hung in there.

"The second half was stressful. I was pleased with how we defended. Nick (Pope) made two magnificent saves for us and you can’t forget the part he played today.

"We always look at the opposition and see what the best system would be. We also lost Kieran (Trippier) and Joe Willock so we had to think about the balance of the team. It was a mixture of both things (to play with a back three).

"Having three centre-halves helped us defensively but we still looked a threat the other way. That’s the key thing – some of our attacking play was really good. We just needed the second goal at that stage.

"
The sending-off changed the game. With the scoreline as it was, it was a tricky second half for us mentally because we wanted to go and attack, and that was the message.

"It was anxious in the second half, that was an interesting 45 minutes. We played really well in the first half, we were electric, but a mixture of things - the psychology of the game, the scoreline, 10 v 11 - it made it a difficult second half. I thought Chelsea did really well but we hung in there.

"The way we play has to fit the culture of the club and what the supporters want. They want fast, attacking, aggressive football; that’s perfect for me. I love to try to give them what they want.

"The start today was amazing – the atmosphere was everything we hoped it would be and then the players delivered.
The crowd were up for the game, the atmosphere was amazing.

"I think the challenge today was the early kick-off. Could we find the voice and the intense atmosphere that we needed? It is very different to kicking off later. I thought the supporters were magnificent - maybe the free pint helped!

"We're on the road to what we want to do this season, but there's still a lot of work to do and two tough fixtures to play.

"The size of the prize is huge, the players are aware of that. There was a worry when we won the (Carabao Cup) trophy that there would be a negative consequence of that, but I think it actually gave us confidence.

"A massive win for us, and we knew that, of course, before the game, we knew the importance. It's so tight, that will put us in a stronger position, but it's still very tight and two games to keep our focus and to try and get as many points as we can."

On the red card offence:

"I thought initially my gut reaction was that's a sending off because I could sort of see that Jackson wasn't looking at the ball, he was looking at the man and I think that always puts you in a vulnerable position, especially if you make contact with your elbow like he did.

"I've just seen it when I was being interviewed on the TV there, and for me, my opinion hasn't changed. I do think it's a red.

"
I don’t want to see red cards in games unless it’s clear and obvious. The visual cues are there. I’m sure he hasn’t meant to elbow him but it doesn’t look great."

On Sven Botman:

"He was slightly uncomfortable in the half time break with a knee problem. I don't think it's serious. He was obviously OK to carry on but he was feeling something.

"With that in mind, and the fact I thought we needed to change tactically, we made a change and brought Lewie
(Miley) on.

"It was a big moment for Lewie, and I thought he handled that situation, with a lot of pressure on him, really, really well. I was really pleased with him.”

On Emil Krafth:

"I thought Emil did really well. It was a difficult time for any defender to come on to the pitch with so much at stake. He used his vast experience and delivered a strong performance."

On the absent Trippier and Willock:

"Kieran has a calf problem and Joe has a thigh problem - they're both similar injuries.

"We don’t think they’re serious, but we don't know if we'll see them again this season.

"We’d love to get them back fit, and able to play a part, but at this moment in time, I’ve not really got any idea whether or not that’s possible.”

On the absent Joelinton:

"When you miss a player like Joelinton, he’s such an infectious character in so many different ways. When he’s missing, you’re looking for someone to step up.

"It’s the same with Kieran
(Trippier). He’s got so much experience and is very vocal, and you miss his vocal presence when he’s not there and not playing. I thought the players that came in did elevate us.

"I thought we played really well in that first half. I changed the system, and that changes a lot of things for us, but I thought the players’ tactical understanding was brilliant.”

The hunt for Greggs continues

Missing from his seat at SJP on Sunday was Mark Allison aka Run Geordie Run as he continues his coast to coast trek across the USA from New York to California.

Setting off on May 1st, he's now completed over 300 miles of his 3,200 mile route, tuning in to hear the win over Chelsea as he continues through Pennsylvania.

Mark is raising funds for St.Benedicts Hospice - if you're able to contribute, then this can be done online here

Newcastle U18s  3  Manchester City U18s  3

Match action is online here

Newcastle U18s concluded their U18 Premier League season on Saturday by sharing six goals with North Section winners Manchester City at a sun-soaked Little Benton.

Seeking their 22nd successive league win, the Citizens led at half time thanks to Christian Dunbar-McDonald, who danced through the home defence in the eighth minute.

The young Magpies equalised with a fine team worked goal in the 56th minute: Matheos Ferreira crossing from the right side of the area and Henry Johnson knocking it down for Kacey Wooster to notch his tenth of the season.

And three minutes later United led when Wooster's shot from the left was palmed out by Max Hudson for Matheos Ferreira to stroke home from close range.

The visitors levelled on 69 minute when Finlay Gorman's right wing corner was headed in unopposed by Leke Drake and substitute Gorman then beat Aidan Harris from distance ten minutes later to restore City's lead.

Beaten 1-7 in the corresponding game earlier in the season, Newcastle's late pressure was rewarded with an equaliser in the final seconds of normal time, Matty Taylor driving through a crowd of players from inside of the box.

Team: Harris, Shahar, Cogdon, Johnson, Epia, Finneran, Ferreira, Munda, Wooster (Brayson 77), O'Donovan (Taylor 77), Sanusi (Fitzgerald 66).
Subs n/u: Jones, Durrant.

Booked: O'Donovan, Finneran, Cogdon.

Chris Moore's side ended the season fifth in the table, three points ahead of the mackems who lost 1-3 at Manchester United in their final game on Saturday.

City's season continues when they meet South Section winners Aston Villa with the national title at stake - Villa defeated them 3-1 in the FA Youth Cup Final on Monday.

Update:
Badge re-imagined

NUFC have announced plans to alter the club crest from the current version, with an initial consultation exercise in the form of an online survey for ST holders and members.

That dropped into inboxes on Friday, with a cut-off point for completed entries of next Friday (May 16th),

A subsequent survey is promised following a fan workshop staged at SJP and online this Wednesday (May 14th).

Senior Cup warning

This season's Northumberland Senior Cup Final between Morpeth Town and Heaton Stannington takes place at Gallowgate on Wednesday night, May 14th.

That's a 7.30pm kick-off and spectators can gain access via turnstiles at the East Stand. Prices are £8 adults, £4 concessions and £2 U18s.

Be aware that payment is strictly cash only - no cards or any other payment method will be accepted.

2025/26:
Celtic (a) on sale now

Newcastle have confirmed a second pre-season kickabout, at Scottish Champions Celtic on Saturday July 19th.

That's a 3pm kick-off and the Magpies have been given 7,200 places, which are now on sale to 2025/26 season ticket holders with 8 points or more.

As was the case for March's Wembley visit, away travel groups won't be in use and seats are individually selected from a seating plan. That was visible on a smartphone but some desktop users report that they struggled to see it.

It's also worth repeating that more than one section is on sale, but in order to see the others, you need to click on the arrow to the right of the screen.

NB: some seats in areas 118 and 119 in the usual away corner have restricted views due to a pillar. These look to be included in the 1,200 that NUFC will be selling for a slightly cheaper price after the full price ones sell out.

NUFC state that this game will be excluded from the usual away ticket transfer scheme.

Prices: £25 adults, over 65s £17, 13-16s £17, U13s £12.

(There's no relevant scheduled rail work that weekend).

This will be United's first game in the East end of Glasgow since a 1-2 loss in August 2004. That was the third visit of the Premier League era, following a 0-2 reverse in July 1999 and a 1-1 draw on a red-hot day in August 1995.

The most recent meeting of the two sides took place at SJP during August 2007, ending in a 4-1 win for the Magpies.

For Eddie Howe it's a belated opportunity to lead a side out at Parkhead, having rejected the chance to become Celtic boss during 2021 - supposedly after failing to reach an agreement on the appointment of his backroom staff.

St.Mirren XI  2  Newcastle U21s  3

Belated confirmation that Newcastle U21s were in friendly action last Tuesday; coach Diarmuid O'Carroll making a successful return to his former club St.Mirren.

Goalscorers for United at the first team ground in Paisley were Josh Donaldson, Alfie Harrison and Trevan Sanusi.

The Magpies second string will play a further friendly this coming Tuesday, hosting Celtic behind closed doors.

Newcastle's final away game of the season takes them to North London and a 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium, live on Sky Sports.

NUFC confirm that tickets are in digital format and will be sent out via email on Monday. Ticket forwarding opens at 4.30pm on Thursday and ends at 11.30am on Sunday.

If you are intending to forward your ticket (limit of two per season) then don't download the ticket, otherwise it will need to be reissued - which is a pain in the a**e....

United go in search of an unprecedented fourth victory and clean sheet against Mikel Arteta's side this season, after their 1-0 PL win at SJP followed by the two-legged Carabao Cup success - 2-0 in London and 2-0 on Tyneside.

Remaining NUFC players on temporary postings:

Vakhtang Salia
(Dinamo Tblisi):
The youngster completed 71 minutes of Thursday's 2-1 home win over Telavi at the cost of booking, withdrawn when the scoring was complete.

Dinamo remain fourth in the Erovnuli Liga, 11 points shy of the leaders Iberia 1999.

Miodrag Pivas
(Willem II):
The usual unused bench place for Pivas as his current side lost 1-2 at home to Heracles in the Eredivisie on Friday.

With two games to play, Willem II are condemned to a bottom three finish, either in the relegation playoff place that they currently occupy or one of the two automatic relegation spots.

Max Thompson
(Chesterfield):
The Spireites have it all to do after a 0-2 home loss to Walsall in the first leg of their League Two Play-off semi-final on Sunday. Max remained on the bench.

Travis Hernes
(AaB):
A 1-3 loss away to Viborg on Sunday leave Aabs embroiled in the Danish SuperLiga relegation play-offs with just two games remaining.

James Huntley (Spennymoor Town):
Fitness problems inevitably meant that James wasn't in the squad for Sunday's FA Trophy Final meeting with Aldershot at Wembley. Moors were beaten 0-3.

On This Day in History
11th May

Born Or Died:

1924 Jackie Milburn born, Ashington.
(1943-57)

Commemorated in books, plays, statues and songs, “Wor Jackie” enjoyed a lifelong association with Newcastle United.

Born into a footballing family (with second cousins Jack and Bobby Charlton), Jackie's Magpies association began in 1943 when  he played two trial matches at St.James’ Park – scoring twice in the first then blasting home six second half goals the following weekend.

His home debut in August 1943 was marked with a goal scored with his first touch, but Milburn had to wait until the 1945/46 season to make his competitive bow.

A season before Football League fixtures returned, that debut came in the FA Cup  - staged that season over two legs to assist clubs financially.

Two goals in a 4-2 home win over Barnsley sent a 60,284 crowd away happy – although a 0-3 second leg reverse at Oakwell ended any Wembley dreams.

Manager George Martin was to have a profound effect on Milburn’s career in 1947, moving him to centre forward and handing him the number nine shirt after the sale of Charlie Wayman to Southampton.

That paid instant dividends with a hat trick away at Bury and a haul of twenty league goals that season, as the Magpies returned to Division One.

At that point Milburn finally gave up his job as a colliery fitter and the JET (John Edward Thompson) age began.

Netting twice against Blackpool at Wembley in 1951 and then after 45 seconds against Manchester City in 1955 en route to collecting a third winner’s medal.

Many contemporary observers choose the Sixth Round tie away at Portsmouth in March 1952 as his finest display, featuring a hat trick of memorable strikes.

First capped by England in 1948, Jack won a total of 13 senior caps and scored 10 goals.

After having left Tyneside for Belfast club Linfield in 1957, Milburn returned home three years later at the age of 36, to be greeted by offers to make a playing return.

Amid interest from Stoke City and various Scottish sides came a call from Charlie Mitten – the then Newcastle boss.

However Milburn was denied the chance of a playing comeback after the Football League refused to sanction a request to repay his player’s insurance policy.

Turning down the job of Ashington player -manager, he took a similar position at Yiewsley in Middlesex and briefly, at Carmel College in Wallingford.

Jack then succeeded Alf Ramsay as Ipswich Town manager, but returned to the North East in 1964 after eighteen months.

He then reported on United for The News of the World, often getting a helping hand from old pal Joe Harvey - whom he gently pressed for tipoffs on the golf course.

A testimonial game in 1967 saw over 45,000 fans pay homage at SJP, while 1981 saw him the subject of TV show “This is Your Life.”

Sadly, lung cancer claimed him in October 1988. His funeral cortege fittingly slowed on Barrack Road en route to St. Nicholas’ Cathedral amid large crowds of mourners.

Milburn’s widow Laura later scattered his ashes across the Gallowgate End of the ground before returning to christen the stand that now bears his name.

Jackie's club goalscoring record was finally surpassed by Alan Shearer in 2006, but his place in club history is assured - and what would have been his 88th birthday found a statue of the great man belatedly relocated outside St. James' Park.

United rounded off a post-season tour that had taken them to Brighton, Peterborough, Dublin and Cork with a Monday night game in Belfast at the Oval.

Ex-Ards player George Eastham gave the visitors a two goal lead, but Newcastle's Belfast-born duo Alf McMichael and Dick Keith both contrived to register own goals.

Glentoran included goalkeeper George Fullerton, guesting for his old side following a move to Leeds United the previous September.

City won the championship at SJP thanks to this victory, but Newcastle still managed to sneak into the Fairs Cup despite a tenth place finish.

After Jim Scott hit the crossbar, City went ahead against the run of play but United quickly levelled when Wyn Davies and Jackie Sinclair combined for Pop Robson to net.

Tony Book then cleared a Davies header off the line before City again broke out of defence to net again - Neil Young blasting a first-time effort past the helpless Iam McFaul.

Within seconds though United struck back;  Sinclair controlling Jim Iley's pass and unleashing an unstoppable shot.

City then took the initiative after the break in a see-saw game and David Craig cleared Colin Bell's shot off the line - only for Young to arrive and swipe home the rebound.

Francis Lee then looked to have rounded off the victory with a fourth just after the hour, only for John McNamee to set City nerves jangling again when he headed home Pop Robson's centre from the right wing.

The final whistle brought a pitch invasion from the thousands of travelling fans who had congregated at the Gallowgate End - with news breaking that the title was theirs regardless of this victory, after the mackems pulled off a shock 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

A week after losing to Liverpool at Wembley in the FA Cup Final, Joe Harvey made six changes to his side for this season-closer.

In came Martin Burleigh, David Crosson, Denis Laughton, Stewie Barrowclough, Paul Cannell and Alex Bruce, but United failed to improve on a record of just one win in their last 14 league games.

1974 Absent from SJP were Spurs goalkeeper Pat Jennings and United's Tommy Cassidy, both on international duty for Northern Ireland in a home international against Scotland.

Cassidy netted the only goal of the game that afternoon at Hampden Park.

1975 Malcolm Macdonald failed to repeat his goalscoring feat in the return game against Cyprus, but a Kevin Keegan goal secured an England victory in Limassol.

1983 The greatest night in Aberdeen's history, as they beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Gothenburg to claim the Cup Winners Cup.

United ended their first top flight season since 1977/78 in mid-table, ending a run of three successive defeats at Carrow Road.

The Canaries however edged closer to the drop and were relegated despite winning their final game at Chelsea days later.

That outcome could have been different had Magpies 'keeper Martin Thomas not made an outstanding save to deny City's Steve Bruce.

With manager Jack Charlton scouting elsewhere, coach Willie McFaul took charge of the side. He would remain at the helm the following season after Charlton walked out on the club.

The end of the season had a strange conclusion; United boss Ossie Ardiles seeing his side extend their winless run to six games and Lee Clark scored his first home goal late in the game when the already-relegated Tigers were 0-2 up.

Despite that though, the atmosphere was upbeat and there were scenes of jubilation at full time. The reason? the mackems had been relegated from Division One at Maine Road...

John Watson was a half time arrival in place of Robbie Elliott for what would be his only senior Newcastle appearance.

An eleventh place finish in the second tier was the joint lowest that the club had managed since World War II (in 1961/62 and 1980/81). Fast forward 12 months and a new record low of twentieth had been set.

And it was a day to forget for Newcastle's Kieron Dyer, whose World Cup dreams lay in tatters after El Khalej brought him down in full flight with a scything lunge.

Dyer was named in Sven's squad for the bunfight in Japan/Korea, but only managed a couple of forgettable substitute appearances.

On the 82nd anniversary of Jackie Milburn's birth, the club's all-time leading goalscorer, Alan Shearer bade farewell in a charity testimonial against Celtic at St. James' Park.

Unable to play due to injury, the number 9 kicked off and then returned in second half added time to dispatch the winning goal from the penalty spot amid great acclaim.

The night was in honour of Al but this was a celebration of all things United - the generous applause afforded returning old boys Steve Watson, Rob Lee and Gary Speed eclipsed by the awesome roar that greeted Sir Les.

After surrendering our seven match unbeaten record to Chelsea at SJP the previous weekend, our season ended in the Goodison Park rain with the hosts celebrating, after securing their place in Europe.

While the result was academic for us though, it ended a bad seven days that started with the Chelsea defeat and manager Kevin Keegan's comments about our being "a million miles" away from the top four.

Of the 14 players used here, 12 stayed on - Abdoulaye Faye (who refused to play in the second half) joining Stoke City and Peter Ramage becoming a free agent.

The latter had a farewell outing from the bench and was cheered by the away fans as he left the field near to tears.

Alan Shearer registered his only victory as Newcastle boss at a fevered SJP - and our first of 2009 - as United rose out of the bottom three.

The teams entered to a great reception, the ground a sea of black and white flags after the club provided thousands.

However, within three minutes it was the away fans who were celebrating, after Tuncay's shot rebounded back off Steve Harper before Habib Beye inadvertently ran it into the net from six yards.

Steven Taylor quickly levelled before substitute Obafemi Martins shot home with his first touch. The win was sealed when fellow replacement
Peter Lovenkrands converted a Kevin Nolan pass.

2016 A 3-0 home victory over Everton was enough to preserve Premier League status for the mackems - at Newcastle's expense.

Sam Allardyce's lot encountered feeble opposition from a rotten Toffees side and went ahead when former Magpie Patrick van Aanholt converted a free kick.

Everton sacked Roberto Martinez within hours, while Newcastle were left to bow out of the top flight after six seasons with a seemingly meaningless home fixture against Spurs.

2022 Six years to the day that Newcastle dropped out of the Premier League without kicking a ball, the Magpies looked on as their top flight safety was secured.

A 3-0 win for Chelsea over Leeds United left the 18th-placed Whites nine points behind us with just two games left.

To have recovered from a seemingly hopeless position of one victory and 12 points from our first 20 games was a remarkable achievement - with the mid-season transfers only one part of the story. Howe's about that!
