Newcastle's final away game of the season takes them to North London and a 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium, live on Sky Sports.

Ticket forwarding ends at 11.30am on Sunday.

United go in search of an unprecedented fourth victory and clean sheet against Mikel Arteta's side this season, after their 1-0 PL win at SJP followed by the two-legged Carabao Cup success - 2-0 in London and 2-0 on Tyneside.

Their final away game of the season sees them seeking a ninth win on the road, their best ever PL return and something not achieved since the 2001/02 season - that total including a memorable 3-1 success at Highbury.

Team: Joelinton Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall and Matt Targett will all miss out, with Joe Willock unlikely to feature against his old club.

Speaking on Friday, Eddie Howe refused to rule Sven Botman
out of Sunday's game but confirmed that he had suffered an injury during the win over Chelsea.

Ex-Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle will play the final game of his career on Saturday, as his current club Hibernian host Rangers at Easter Road in the Scottish Premiership.

The 35 year-old forward has scored six goals since signing for Hibs last September and has confirmed his imminent retirement. He plans to become a player's agent.

Meanwhile Gayle's former SJP team-mate Jeff Hendrick has unsurprisingly left Derby County after his short-term deal at the Championship club expired.

The 33 year-old midfielder rejoined the Rams in March but failed to make a single appearance for them.

And Paul Dummett's time at Carlisle United is over, the 33 year-old defender departing after failing to help the Cumbrians avoid relegation to the National League in his brief time at Brunton Park.

Paul Huntington has the opportunity to prolong his stay at Bradford City however, the 37 year-old now out of contract at Valley Parade but invited to pre-season training as the Bantams move up to League One.

PS: A trio of former Magpie goalkeepers playing in the Championship are all set to become free agents, with Tim Krul confirmed as leaving Luton Town, Freddie Woodman expected to exit Preston North End and Jak Alnwick's fate at Cardiff City awaited.

Update:
Vote now for Howe

The nominations for the 2024/25 Barclays Premier League Manager of the season have been announced, with Newcastle's Eddie Howe among the five candidates.

A combination of a public vote and a "panel of football experts" will determine the winner, with voting open from now until Noon on Monday (19th) online here.

Only one Magpies boss has won this award previously, Alan Pardew recognised back in 2011/12 for guiding his side to a fifth place finish.

Match action (Morpeth Town)

Wednesday evening saw Heaton Stannington lift the Northumberland Senior Cup for the very first time in their history, defeating Morpeth Town in a penalty shootout.

3,841 fans were at Gallowgate to see a scoreless 90 minutes during which neither side dominated, the tie proceeding straight to penalties at that point.

The first eight spot kicks were converted before both sides saw their fifth efforts saved. Town then failed with their next, leaving Stan substitute Dan Groves to fire past former Magpie goalkeeper Dan Langley and into the Gallowgate net.

Newcastle U21s  1  Celtic B   1

Following last week's 3-2 friendly win away to St.Mirren, United's U21 side faced Scottish opposition once again on Tuesday, this time at Darsley Park.

A close range effort from Sean Neave gave the hosts an interval lead before the visitors found a late leveller.

20 players were used by Newcastle, with Jamaal Lascelles completing the opening 45 minutes - his first on-field involvement after missing 13 months with an ACL injury.

Sweet FA for Dan

Former Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth has been appointed as the FA's head of elite men's and women's development - returning to the employer he served between 2012 and 2018 before leaving for Brighton.

Ashworth spent two years at SJP before an approach from Manchester United saw him placed on gardening leave in February 2024. However he lasted barely six months at Old Trafford before a parting of the ways - the Red Devils forking out a combined £4.1m in compensation to Newcastle and then paying him off.

Meanwhile, ex-Magpie U21 coach Elliott Dickman has left his post as South Shields manager after the Mariners finished seventeenth in National League North.

Championship:
Blades v mackems

The identity of the third side joining Burnley and Leeds United in the Premier League next season will be decided at Wembley Stadium on Saturday week, May 24th.

Facing Sheffield United in the play-off final will be the mackems, after they completed a 3-2 aggregate win over
Coventry City in their semi-final on Tuesday.

2025/26:
Celtic (a) SOLD OUT

Newcastle have confirmed a second pre-season kickabout, at Scottish Champions Celtic on Saturday July 19th.

That's a 3pm kick-off, with United receiving 7,200 places.

The ballot for season ticket holders  opens on Mon 19.05.2025 at 2pm and closes 24 hours later.

NUFC state that this game will be excluded from the usual away ticket transfer scheme.

(There's no relevant scheduled rail work that weekend).

This will be United's first game in the East end of Glasgow since a 1-2 loss in August 2004. That was the third visit of the Premier League era, following a 0-2 reverse in July 1999 and a 1-1 draw on a red-hot day in August 1995.

The most recent meeting of the two sides took place at SJP during August 2007, ending in a 4-1 win for the Magpies.

For Eddie Howe it's a belated opportunity to lead a side out at Parkhead, having rejected the chance to become Celtic boss during 2021 - supposedly after failing to reach an agreement on the appointment of his backroom staff.

Born Or Died:

1893 George Stanley Seymour born, Kelloe, Durham. (1920-29)

As captain, manager, director and Vice -President, Stan Seymour served United in three spells over almost seventy years.

Known as "Mister Newcastle" thanks to his later achievements on and off the field, Seymour was initially discarded by the club as a teenage amateur before World War I, returning to play local football for Shildon.

After a brief spell at Bradford City, his career took off after some impressive displays for Greenock Morton, before his move to Newcastle followed in May 1920.

The return on the £2,500 fee paid was instant as Seymour marked his debut with a goal on the opening day of the season, although his side only managed a 1-1 home draw with West Bromwich Albion.

Four solid seasons brought successive top ten finishes, culminating in a 2-0 victory in the 1924 FA Cup Final, where Seymour scored the second goal in the dying minutes of the club’s Wembley debut.

Stan accepted an FA invitation to join a tour of Australia in 1925 (along with fellow Magpie Charlie Spencer), winning unofficial England caps during a mammoth 25 game tour that took five months to conclude including one month journey time by sea each way!

Seymour’s finest club campaign came in 1926/27 as he was an ever-present in the Championship-winning side, scoring eighteen goals – the last of which came in a title- clinching 1-1 draw at West Ham United.

Two seasons later came his retirement from playing, his final appearance coming at SJP against Arsenal in October 1928.

Nine years later however, Stan was invited to join the Newcastle Board, giving up his sideline of a newspaper match compiler but retaining ownership of the sports shop he’d established in the city.

After the war years intervened, Seymour set about reconstructing the side which would achieve promotion back to the First Division at the second attempt in 1948.

Having handed over nominal control of team affairs to George Martin, Seymour took over again when Martin defected to Aston Villa in 1950, presiding over two FA Cup Final wins.

A dip in results though saw Stan convinced by his fellow directors to make way for another team manager, Duggie Livingstone arriving at Christmas 1954.

He was to last barely a year though, with Seymour famously over-ruling him before the 1955 FA Final, when Jackie Milburn was omitted from the first teamsheet submitted to the directors for their approval.

Stan remained at SJP while Charlie Mitten and Norman Smith were tried as manager. However his masterstroke was bringing Joe Harvey back in 1962 to fill the role.

Harvey eventually departed in 1975, with Seymour retiring as a club director the following year - aged 83.

He passed away two years later, having seen his son join the board – although he didn’t live to see Stan Seymour junior emulate his father and become Chairman.

1921 Charlie Wayman born, Bishop Auckland. (1941-47)

Coming to prominence in the football team at Chilton Colliery where he worked, Charlie was signed on by Spennymoor United and wrote to Newcastle requesting a trial.

That came to fruition in 1941 and although war service in the Royal Navy restricted his availability, Wayman showed his goalscoring ability in wartime league matches (also guesting for Portsmouth).

Switching to centre forward in the wake of Albert Stubbin's move to Liverpool, Charlie's first game in that role was memorable - despite missing a first minute penalty kick.

Wayman went on to score four times in a 13-0 home trouncing of Newport County and ended up netting 34 in the 1946/47 season.

However, he fell out with United and requested a transfer after being dropped from the FA Cup Semi Final team against Charlton in March 1947. United lost 4-0.

That rift was never healed (although not publicly disclosed) and Charlie moved on to Southampton that October in exchange for a club record fee of £10K.

He continued to score goals there and was as prolific when moving on to Preston North End in September 1953.

At Deepdale he was part of the side who lost the title to Arsenal on goal average and were beaten by West Brom in the Cup Final.

Spells with Middlesbrough and Darlington then saw him forced into retirement due to a knee injury in 1958, having netted a career total of 250 goals in 382 games.

Charlie's final involvement with football proved to be a coaching role at Evenwood Town, after which he worked for Scottish & Newcastle Breweries.

Married with four sons and two daughters, Charlie passed away in February 2006.

United exited the Coronation Cup competition at the semi-final stage, comprehensively beaten at the Ibrox home of Rangers.

A lifeless display brought some catcalling from fans and even when given the chance to net from the penalty spot on 76 minutes, Bobby Mitchell contrived to miss the target.

Across the city meanwhile, over 70,000 fans were watching Celtic defeat Manchester United 2-1 at Hampden Park.

This was an eight team event to mark the arrival of Liz on the throne and involved ourselves, Spurs, Arsenal, Manchester United, Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and the Dons.

Having been thumped 0-3 in Yorkshire just weeks earlier, the Magpies gained revenge over Don Revie's side.

A fine late strike by Alan Suddick saw him cement his position as top scorer in the league with 14 to his name.

Two points gained completed Newcastle's escape from relegation in their first season back in the top flight - and was enough to raise them above their mackem rivals.

After a 0-0 draw at Roker Park, hopes were high going into the second leg of this semi-final, with a place in Wembley play-offs seemingly beckoning.

In the event though, Newcastle never got going and were beaten by goals from Denis Smith's blue-clad goblin striking duo.

This remains just about the only game either of the NUFC.com authors recall leaving early - the pathetic pitch invasion hastening both our (separate) exits from the ground.

66 arrests were made and 12 police offers injured (of 550 on duty); referee George Courtney forced to take the players off the field for 18 minutes after the second goal.

One unlucky student-type in the Bacchus who chose an inopportune time to ask the final score was subsequently treated in the RVI for a burst eardrum...

Among those watching from the Milburn Stand were former Magpie trio Chris Waddle, Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne, who left the England squad to attend.

If you can't remember this game, count your blessings....it's worth recalling the team Jim Smith put on the park that night:

Team: Burridge, Stimson, Bradshaw (Dillon 46), Aitken, Anderson, Scott, Askew (O'Brien 77), Brock, Quinn, McGhee, Kristensen.

PS: The mackems would lose 0-1 to Swindon Town, but still gain promotion after the Wiltshire side were demoted for illegal match betting. The Swindon chairman and manager backed Town to be beaten in the FA Cup at.....Newcastle. They were, 0-5.

The Gunners completed the League and Cup double with this routine Wembley victory over a docile United side.

Magpies boss Kenny Dalglish was probably the only man on the planet who thought putting Pistone at right back instead of Steve Watson was a good idea. That's apart from Marc Overmars - and Arsene Wenger...

United's pre-Wembley slump continued as they made it six games without a win since beating Spurs in the FA Cup Semi-Final.

Without Alan Shearer and Duncan Ferguson, only a thunderbolt from Didi Hamann avoided an embarrassing loss to an already-relegated Rovers side.

After the euphoria of beating Boro, normal service sadly resumed for Alan Shearer's side.

A mixture of poor luck, poor decisions, poor football and poor play - and a feeling that the hard work had been done - cost us dear.

Obafemi Martins was unfortunate to hit the post and Mark Viduka denied a legitimate goal for some non-existent pushing, but everything else was self-inflicted.

Sluggish defending allowed Diomansy Kamara to shoot Fulham ahead while Sebastien Bassong's red card was well deserved.

2012 Ex-Newcastle boss Kenny Dalglish saw his second managerial spell at Anfield end, paying the price for a troubled first full season back in charge of the Reds.

League Cup Final success failed to keep Kenny in post; an eighth place league finish (below Everton) and various underachieving big money buys, including Andy Carroll.

Our own chances of avoiding the drop rested on final day results involving ourselves, Hull City and the mackems.

United destroyed Arsenal's Champions League dreams with a fantastic victory, bringing their home fixtures to the most memorable of conclusions.

An intense atmosphere inspired United to their best display of the season; Callum Wilson's pressure breaking the deadlock before Bruno Guimaraes netted a late second to put Mikel Arteta's side out of their misery.
