Premier League:
Still in our own hands

Arsenal  1  Newcastle  0

Match action is online here

Newcastle's hopes of finishing second in the Premier League came to an end at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon after Arsenal's Declan Rice fired in the only goal of the game.

In a game of two halves, United failed to find the net despite dominating the first period and
managing five efforts on target in the first quarter; David Raya denying Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn and Sven Botman.

Eddie Howe's side failed to carry that threat following the interval however and the Gunners grew into the contest, culminating in the 55th minute winner clinically dispatched past Nick Pope by the fit-again Rice.

With Alexander Isak missing from the starting line-up due to injury, Callum Wilson made his first league start since the defeat at Liverpool in February but never looked remotely like finding the net, despite his side creating chances.

Guimaraes looked a certain scorer six yards out but went for placement and was denied, Livramento's shot after a fine move was too near Raya and Burn was unlucky that the 'keeper saved his header before Botman was also foiled.

Leandro Trossard shot just wide and Pope blocked a Thomas Partey header as the listless Gunners tried to hit back, Raya again to the rescue when a Harvey Barnes shot was deflected off Partey towards the bottom corner of the goal.

The Magpies ended the half well on top in terms of chances and possession, disappointed not to be in front against a side they'd beaten three times already during the season in all competitions without conceding a single goal.

That changed 10 minutes after the restart though, when Anthony Gordon was dispossessed by Bukayo Saka on the left hand side of the United half.

Martin Odegaard advanced before turning the ball infield to Rice and his firmly-hit first-time drive from the edge of the box swung away from Pope to belatedly bring a slumbering Emirates to life.

Howe responded with changes; Emil Krafth, Lewis Miley and William Osula all introduced and Joe Willock also coming on for the closing stages.

Former Gunner Willock could have scored in the 83rd minute but fired high and wide after doing well to make a chance for himself inside the box near the left hand byline.

A melee in added time following a Newcastle corner saw players from both sides confront each other in the Arsenal box after Burn challenged Raya, opposite number Pope having coming forward for the set piece.

Jakub Kiwior and Burn were booked following a VAR check before referee Simon Hooper blew for full time.

A single goal defeat was the least worst result in terms of limiting the damage to United's goal difference compared to Chelsea, avoiding going further behind of equal or even greater importance than trying to force a leveller.

Going into that final day level on points with Enzo Maresca's side and with a goal difference two better than them, it's not impossible that a further "tie breaker" could be required to separate Newcastle and Chelsea.

That scenario would be goals scored, with United currently five clear on 68 compared to Chelsea's 63.

Although hopes of stealing second place from Mikel Arteta's side have now ended, the overall task remains unchanged from what it was before the first whistle at the Emirates.

Regardless of the outcome of Manchester City's game in hand and other results next Sunday, Eddie Howe's side will
secure a Champions League place by beating Everton.

That would make it seven PL wins in a row at Gallowgate and 13 in 19 home games this season - the best top flight total by any Magpies side in the top flight since 2003.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

"
We've had to win a number of games to get in this position. It's in our hands. Everything in our preparation needs to be really focused. This game has gone, second has gone, we have to be ready for next week.

"As soon as we get one or two injuries, we're stretched. We've said that every since I've been here. We are light.

"When you lose Kieran Trippier, Joe Willock, Lewis Hall, and then Alex today
(and Joelinton), you see those players missing. Then you lose your firepower from the bench. They are developing, they will be good players. But we've lost a bit of firepower.

"We were really good in the first half, really strong and really imposed ourselves on that match. Their goalkeeper made some great saves, we didn't take one of those huge moments.

"The second half was very different but we defended well. The goal that won the game was an unbelievable effort.

"My mood is the same after we lose: I'm disappointed, frustrated, takes time to get out of that way of thinking. I will look back positively on this game, there was so much to take from it.

"Halfway through the season we weren't in a great position. We worked hard to get here. It's an incredibly tight race. We have one more game to execute what we need.

"We love playing at home. It's a really great atmosphere. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves and make it too emotional.

"We know what we have to do, our home form has been strong. We've enjoyed playing there, there will be none bigger than this. The Newcastle fans will come out for us.

"You can label that at us we weren't ruthless, we didn't take the chances. It's not for a lack of trying. We were really strong mentally today. There was no hangover from the players."

On Isak's injury:

"I don't think this is a surgery issue. It's not something that needs mending. It is certain that is needs looking at as to why he gets these groin complaints. It's not a surgery issue, it's a 'what we need to strengthen that area' issue."

"It's a difficult one to go too deep into. The standard with him missing is so strong. We looked very good in every phase in that first half. The final action, he is better than anyone this season. He's been a brilliant finisher for us.

"Unfortunately for Callum
(Wilson), none fell to him. But it was a strong performance in his absence."

On whether Isak will face Everton:

"That's unknown. I don't know.

"He only felt pain after training, during training he was fine. It was stiffness and went to get a scan. Then it became clear he was not fit to play.

"A lot will depend how he reacts. He had a couple of groin issues either side, but this is one he felt earlier in the season."

Stats:

Eddie Howe's side ended their PL away campaign with eight victories on the road, one short of their best-ever total.

Emil Krafth was shown a yellow card just 29 seconds after arriving on the field as a substitute.

Departure:
Kelly "confirmation"

Although the exact contractual terms weren't publicised, Sunday's victory for Juventus over Udinese looks to have removed any doubt that Lloyd Kelly's loan to the Italian side will be converted into a permanent move.

The three points were enough to confirm a top six finish in Serie A with one game remaining, meaning that they'll at least qualify for the European Conference League - and reportedly trigger completion of Kelly's deal by doing do.

The 26 year-old started Sunday's win, which was his fourteenth competitive league and cup appearance for Juventus - a figure claimed by some sources to have already met the threshold for a permanent move.

The terms of his departure from SJP in January were reportedly an initial £2.5m loan fee, a further £12m for triggering the purchase option and a subsequent £5m depending on contractual obligations being met.

Sunset on Leith

Ex-Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle played his final game on Saturday, as his current club Hibernian drew 2-2 with Rangers at Easter Road in the Scottish Premiership.

The 35 year-old forward failed to add to his six goal tally for Hibs after appearing from the bench in the 57th minute.

Gayle has confirmed retirement and plans to become a player's agent.

Gayle's former SJP team-mate Jeff Hendrick has left Derby County after his short-term deal at the Championship club expired.

The 33 year-old midfielder rejoined the Rams in March but failed to make a single appearance for them.

And Paul Dummett's time at Carlisle United is over, the 33 year-old defender departing after failing to help the Cumbrians avoid relegation to the National League in his brief time at Brunton Park.

Paul Huntington has the opportunity to prolong his stay at Bradford City however, the 37 year-old now out of contract at Valley Parade but invited to pre-season training as the Bantams move up to League One.

PS: A trio of former Magpie goalkeepers playing in the Championship are all set to become free agents, with Tim Krul confirmed as leaving Luton Town, Freddie Woodman exiting Preston North End and formal confirmation of Jak Alnwick's fate at Cardiff City awaited.

On This Day in History
19th May

Born Or Died:

1937 Barrie Thomas born, Measham, Leicestershire. (1962-64)

Centre forward who worked down the mines before signing for Leicester City, only for national service to halt his progress.

Joining Mansfield Town before moving on to Scunthorpe United in 1959, Thomas was the top scorer in the Football League with 30 goals in 22 games when fellow Second Division side Newcastle bid a record £45,000 for him in early 1962.

The Iron opted to cash in and a deal was concluded with John McGuigan also moving from Gallowgate to the Old Showground - while both Leeds United and Manchester United made their interest known.

Debuting in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at SJP, Thomas first found the net in his third game - away at Swansea - and Walter Winterbottom quickly called him up to an England training session, although he failed to make the 1962 World Cup squad.

However
his time at SJP was blighted by injury and criticism from some fans and colleagues and while netting hat tricks against Boro, Plymouth and Rotherham, he failed to fire his side to promotion.

Losing his place to Ron McGarry, Barrie reluctantly returned to Scunthorpe early in 1964. His scoring touch remained despite fitness issues and as Newcastle celebrated promotion the following May, he netted five as the Iron beat Luton Town 8-1.

Injury ended his playing career at Barnsley, after which he had a spell managing local non-league side Measham Swifts.

1959 Keith Guy born, Seaham.
(1975-77)

Midfielder who appeared for Deneside Juniors, Seaham Boys and had an England schoolboy trial.

Scouted by Tommy Jordan, Keith joined United and played in the FA Youth Cup run to the Semi Final stage in the 1975/76 season - along with namesake Alan.

However, he failed to win a professional contract and signed for Hartlepool United on a free transfer in 1977.

After a dozen outings at the Vic, Keith then joined local leaguers Seaham Red Star.

1976 Brendan Markey born, Dublin.
(1995)

Striker who joined United on trial before the 1995/96 season and appeared off the bench to replace Les Ferdinand in a 3-1 friendly win at Rushden & Diamonds in July.

Reportedly turning down a contract offer from Newcastle, Markey continued playing for Bohemians until a £60K transfer to a Millwall side managed by Mick McCarthy was finalised in December 1995.

Injury problems meant he never made a competitive debut for the Lions and within a year he'd been loaned to Dundalk and then back to Bohemians.

Later moves took him to Shamrock Rovers, Waterford United, Newry Town, a further spell with Bohemians, Dublin City, Glenavon, Athlone Town, Dundalk, Monaghan United, St Patricks Athletic and Malahide United.

Joining Bangor City in 2010, Brendan left a year later and announced his retirement.

1987 David Edgar
born, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. (2006-09)

The son of former Magpies 'keeper Eddie, David was brought up in Canada where his dad had emigrated and taken up coaching.

Early interest from Manchester United was rebuffed, but an offer from Newcastle saw David move to England aged 13 and live with relatives on Tyneside playing as a schoolboy for United.

After signing a professional deal in 2005, David's debut came at Bolton on Boxing Day 2006, in a back four composed entirely of Academy graduates: himself, Steven Taylor, Peter Ramage & Paul Huntington.

"Eddie" then memorably marked his senior home debut by scoring an equaliser against Manchester United on New Years Day 2007.

David's first six senior outings came under no less than three different bosses (Glenn Roeder, Sam Allardyce and Kevin Keegan).

A second senior goal came in December 2008, when he briefly pulled Newcastle back to within one goal of Liverpool at SJP, before the Reds hit back to triumph 5-1.

David's last game for the Magpies proved to be the season-closing defeat at Aston Villa in May 2009 that confirmed our relegation - when he was dismissed late on for a foul.

Joining Premier League new boys Burnley under freedom of contract, compensation of £300K plus appearance-related payments was eventually agreed in December 2009.

However, he found pitch time hard to come and joined Championship side Swansea City on loan during March 2010.

Returning to Turf Moor, David was part of the squad that returned to the Premier League in 2014 - although he wasn't retained and became a free agent.

Edgar's ex-Magpie colleague and reserve coach Lee Clark soon came calling and a two year deal was agreed taking David to Championship side Birmingham City.

Clark departed from St. Andrew's in October 2014 and David then followed suit the next January, agreeing a loan move to fellow Championship side Huddersfield Town.

July 2015 then saw him loaned out by City to League One side Sheffield United, where he stayed for the full season making 38 appearances and scoring twice.

Joining Vancouver Whitecaps in July 2016, a freak knee injury in December of that year left David's playing future in doubt after he fell victim to a hit and run drive whilst on a golfing holiday in Arizona.

By 2018 he was back playing and agreed a deal with US side Nashville but played just a handful of games before departing.

A subsequent period in Canada with Ottawa Fury was equally short-lived and Edgar was a free agent by November 2018 when having an unsuccessful trial at the mackems.

Similar spells with Bradford City and Tranmere Rovers failed to result in a contract offer but David was more successful the following March when signing a short-term deal at National League side Hartlepool United.

After nine games though, Edgar left 'Pools in the summer of 2019 and joined Hamilton, Ontario-based Forge FC for their inaugural season in the Canadian Premier League.

He hung up his boots in 2020 and became Assistant Coach of Forge FC, leaving them in March 2025.

Capped by and captaining Canada at various youth international levels including the U20 World Cup on home soil in 2007, Edgar made his senior debut against Greece in 2011.

United's post-season tour began in stormy circumstances, with Tommy Lang and an opponent dismissed for fighting.

The visiting players needed the protection of police and soldiers to leave the stadium, with their motor coaches vandalised beyond repair.

That resulting in the Newcastle party having to leave on foot - policemen drawing guns to control a 5,000 crowd, some of whom threw missiles whilst others brandished knives.

Magpie Jack Hill later claimed that the match ball was only half the normal size and that "deliberate kicking by the Milan team soon had our team upset".

It's recorded that the Newcastle players walked off the field in protest after the hosts were awarded a 25th minute penalty.  They did return and the game belatedly restarted with Milan's penalty taker firing wide.

Inter Milan were known as Ambrosiana between 1928 and 1945, with their San Siro home opening in 1926.

1987 England and Brazil drew 1-1 in the Rous Cup at Wembley, future United striker Mirandinha on target for the visitors seconds after Gary Lineker's opener.

Soon to be ex-Magpie Peter Beardsley was in home side alongside old boy Chris Waddle and future black and whites Stuart Pearce and John Barnes.

Gary Speed and Ian Taylor were dismissed near the end of this one but both red cards were later rescinded. David Ginola was humiliated by his boss John Gregory, being hauled off before half-time.

All was not well in the Villa Park dressing room, Gregory spoken to by police after his foul-mouthed tirade on the touchline.

A disconsolate Paul Merson also made his feelings clear using 'industrial' language in the post-match press conference.

2009 Unsurprisingly, United's last-ditch attempt to ensure defender Sebastien Bassong's availability for the season closer failed and he would serve the first of a two-match suspension against Aston Villa.

The wrongful dismissal claim was heard and rejected by an FA Commission - a two-match ban the consequence of having already been sent off earlier in the season, at Wigan.

Free from the threat of relegation, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew pledged that his side would put on a show in this final game of the season in front of a sold-out SJP.

However, United failed to score for the third successive home game and seldom looked like doing so, as the visitors collected the three points that ensured Champions League qualification at the expense of rivals Spurs.

And Pardew was indebted to the departing Steve Harper for ensuring that roughly half of the crowd remained in their places to give the long-serving 'keeper a fitting send-off, sparing some support for his colleagues.

Captain for the day, Harper made a couple of useful stops and looked visibly moved when the 37th minute of the game came around and the whole of SJP took his squad number as their cue to applaud him.

Harps after his 199th - and last
 - competitive game for United

2016 French media outlets reported that ex-Newcastle United player David Ginola had suffered a suspected heart attack.

The 49 year-old was airlifted to hospital in Monaco after falling ill after playing in a charity football match at a golf event.

It later transpired that Ginola's heart had been stopped for up to eight minutes and he survived only due to the intervention of a paramedic with a defibrillator.

Surgeons then performed a quadruple bypass operation from which he soon recovered.

2018 Rugby League Magic Weekend was staged at St. James' Park for a fourth successive year. 38,881 were present.

Victory over the Bees saw United finish in seventh, European qualification hopes resting on Manchester City defeating Manchester United in the FA Cup Final the following weekend.

Former Magpie Ivan Toney saw a second minute effort ruled out by VAR before a quick trio of goals appeared to give Newcastle an unassailable half-time lead.

However the Bees recovered and got to within one goal of Newcastle before Bruno Guimaraes hit a decisive fourth to confirm three points.

Sadly the Red Devils went on to win at Wembley, leaving Eddie Howe's side to concentrate on domestic matters - which they memorably went on to do.....
