United effort confirms
Champions League spot

Match action is online here

Sunday saw Newcastle round off their trophy-winning season by claiming a place in next season's Champions League tournament - thanks in no small part to the match-winning efforts of Manchester United.

Before kick-off, the Red Devils were on course to set a new club record of just six home league wins in a season, but Ruben Amorim's mob rode their luck before scoring twice to inflict a priceless defeat on Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

The Villans endured a trio of contentious decisions that began with the dismissal of Emiliano Martinez in first half added time, continued with a Morgan Rogers goal that referee Thomas Bramall ruled out and concluded with a penalty award that led to the home side's crucial second goal.

At Gallowgate meanwhile, the Magpies were inflicting cruelty on their fans in the form of a shapeless, aimless performance that helped a certain wearside custodian keep a clean sheet - although our shoddiness was as pivotal as his proficiency....

That pain increased when an unmarked Carlos Alcaraz was left alone to head Vitalii Mykolenko's centre past Nick Pope in the Gallowgate goal just after the hour mark.

Barely 10 minutes later however, roars from those fans inside SJP with a functioning phone signalled that events elsewhere were shaping our destiny in the shape of a Manchester United goal - and then another one for good measure.

A season when results elsewhere never seemed to benefit us concluded with the biggest payback since Villa knocked Brighton off the top of the Championship in 2017.

That it was Manchester United also had a certain symmetry - a year to the day that their FA Cup Final win over Manchester City deprived us of Europe. Concentrating on the domestic cups this season has proved to be a canny ploy....

Newcastle's attempts to dredge up an equaliser that would be meaningless in terms of qualification chances as long as Villa lost saw them end up with an obviously unfit Alexander Isak flanked by Callum Wilson and William Osula.

Anthony Gordon had kept his place in the side, but failed to appear after the break following a shift as unproductive as his colleagues.

Home players clustered on the edge of the Leazes box as the visitors acknowledged their supporters and the giant screen beamed out the latest scores elsewhere.

Moments later, the Champions League logo appeared on the scoreboard as the competition anthem rang out, confirming that there was no late collapse at Old Trafford and Eddie Howe's side had secured fifth place on goal difference.

Wilson confirmed his exit from the club with a tearful solo lap of honour before the now-familiar post-match scenes unfolded, culminating in a group photo taken in front of the Gallowgate End featuring the Carabao Cup, club CEO Yasir Al-Rumayyan and countless squad relatives and bairns.

When people had urged the players all week to "Do it for Bobby" - we didn't realise they meant Charlton....

The fact that Newcastle are back in the Champions League will be remembered long after today's events. An upturn following the defeat at Brentford in December that dropped them into twelfth position was followed by a sequence of results meant that today's outcome didn't matter.

They may have stumbled over the line with sections of the team running on fumes, but they got there. Somehow.

For Howe, the relief is two-fold; not only achieving qualification but also securing the financial rewards that finally allow him to significantly reshape his squad - something that today underlined is long overdue.

Rightfully, there's also celebration for the manager, who reflected on the season just finished as follows:

"First domestic trophy in 70 years, Champions League place, just how big an achievement is it? It’s a massive achievement. A massive season for us."

Team: Pope, Livramento, Schar, Botman (Trippier 63), Burn, Guimaraes, Tonali, J.Murphy (Wilson 70), Gordon (Willock 46), Barnes (Osula 88), Isak.

Goal: Alcaraz 65

Crowd:
52,221 including 3,000 away fans.

Eddie Howe:

"I think we’ve had an incredible season, and the players deserve a lot of credit and praise, in terms of how they’ve handled the season, how they’ve conducted themselves.

"We’ve had some sticky moments, we’ve had some massive ups and downs, but we got there and it was fully deserved.

"In the beginning of the season, there was a little bit of uncertainty, but we’ve always given our best. I think we’ve tried to give real honesty in our performances.

"The players have given their all, and with the amount of games, including the cup run, the players’ mindsets have been incredible.

"You know what the hypotheticals are, but now you have to do it. First domestic trophy in 70 years, Champions League place, just how big an achievement is it? It’s a massive achievement. A massive season for us.

"To win a cup was a game-changer for us. The quality of teams and players should never be underestimated. It’s enough to get back into the Champions League, which really sets the appetite for what next season could be.

"I almost think we were too desperate to win today - I've said that maybe before in games, where that desperation can sometimes lead to poor decisions and a disjointed performance.

"Obviously, as you go through the season and you adjust to what you're achieving, sometimes you think differently, but overall this will be remembered as an unbelievable season in the future for Newcastle to look back on and reflect on.

"You’re thinking, ‘This might not happen today, what’s happening elsewhere?’. That was where my brain went.

"The last stage of the game was strange because we knew bar a miracle we were going to get there, but we still wanted to try to come back and win.

"The achievement is huge. Naturally, when we lose the game, there is a disappointment. I think we have to override that with the 38 games of the season to qualify for the competition. It is a huge moment for the club.

"The experience we had there the first time
(in 2023) will help us no end, I think.

"We felt we grew through the competition, so I think we are stronger. I think we are better prepared both physically and mentally for the competition ahead."

On transfers:

"I do think it's a window we have to be active in and I'm sure we will be. We haven't recruited strongly in three windows and I think eventually that catches up with you continue not to change.

"We felt that potentially last summer which is why it's an amazing achievement from the players to see this season through. But yes, it is going to be a big transfer window for us.

"The power of the Champions League and the pull of the Champions League is huge and we can’t get away from that, the excitement that this will bring for the people here.

"And of course it’s a selling point for us now, it’s an opportunity for us to sell that dream to future players that might be considering coming to us.

"We’ve got to get the financials right, we’ve got to get every other aspect of trying to sign players here right, and hopefully we can do that.

"Speed is key for us and I have reiterated that many times internally. Speed is key because we have to be dynamic, we have to be ready to conclude things very quickly because good players don’t hang around for long.

"That’s always been my thought and my message on recruitment really because you can have a period when you think you have time - but then you look around quickly and you see that time has elapsed and you missed opportunities you won’t get again.

"That’s what we will be trying but the reality of that is it’s not always in your hands - but we will do our best to do things early.”

On Callum Wilson:

"Let's wait and see. We're going to sit down and talk with his representatives.

"What I can say is Callum Wilson is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are.

"Really professional, brave. I mean, to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult moment.

"The club needed hope and Callum gave them hope. He led the line with that responsibility and the pressure that that role brings unbelievably well.

"He brings a positivity to the group. He's a leader within the changing room. He's just been incredible and let's wait and see what happens.

"It was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There's still so much respect there between the two.”

Europe: dates

Next season's CL timetable is as follows:

(UEFA have agreed an away ticket price cap of €50 for the 2025/26 Champions League).

Champions League 2025/26:

NUFC are one of 36 clubs qualifying for the League stage.

All 36 clubs play 8 matches against different opponents in a single league. For the purpose of the draw the clubs are divided into 4 pots. The CL title-holder is placed in pot 1.

The remaining places of pot 1 and the other pots are filled according to the club ranking. Each club will be drawn against two opponents from each of the 4 pots, playing one match at home and one match away against them.

Clubs from the same country will not be drawn against each other in the league phase and each team plays at most against a maximum of two opponents from any other country (providing a deadlock in the draw can be avoided).

The top 8 clubs of the league stage qualify directly for the round of 16, while the clubs at rank 9 to 24 go to the play-off round of the knockout stage. The clubs that finish at rank 25 to 36 are eliminated. In the knockout stage there is no country protection.

Sunday's League One play-off Final at Wembley Stadium saw Charlton Athletic book a return to the Championship, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Leyton Orient.

The Addicks hero with a 37th minute free kick conversion was Ashington-born Macaulay Gillesphey, whose career began at Newcastle's academy, leaving there in 2018.

Update:
Dan deal done

Newcastle United have confirmed a one year contract extension for Dan Burn, keeping the England international defender at Gallowgate until 2027.

Burn, who turned 33 earlier this month, has made 148 appearances in all competitions since completing a £13m switch from Brighton and Hove Albion in January 2022.

Sky Sports report that provision for an additional 12 month deal exists in Burn's revised contract.

Championship:
Up North

A 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Wembley on Saturday confirmed that the mackems will return to the Premier League next season for the first time since 2016/17.

The red and whites will join Burnley and Leeds United in the top flight, with Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City returning to the Championship.

That all means that Newcastle's PL mileage in 2025/26 will drop by a whopping 1,300 miles from 9,462 to 8,162.

RGR:
"An incredible effort"

Speaking to the media on Friday, Magpies boss Eddie Howe had this to say about Mark Allison and his charity exploits:

"I'm not sure I could be doing that at this moment in time....but an incredible effort, first and foremost, to run across the United States of America isn't something that everyone can do. So I'd just like to wish him all the luck.

"I think when you're feeling tired, and I will always say this to the players, you've just got to try and keep going. From his perspective, just put one leg in front of the other and really you're going to have to go deep.

"You're going to have to go to all your motivational tools that you have and he's probably going to spend a lot of time going back to his family and his childhood experiences to try and get through in amongst the pain.

"I have heard about his story and I think it's an incredible effort. What a brilliant cause to raise money for. So congratulations to him and fingers crossed he can finish the job."

On This Day in History
25th May

Born Or Died:

1896 Death of James Logan, 25.
(1895-96)

Centre forward Jimmy died after contracting pneumonia in early April of the same year, as a consequence of playing for his then-current side, Loughborough Town.

Facing Newton Heath (later Manchester United) at their Bank Street ground, Logan and
his team mates played in their own clothes, after Town's kit went missing.

On a rainy afternoon, The Luffs lost 0-2 and were then forced to travel home in their soaking clothes.

Logan caught a cold as a result and although he recovered sufficiently to play again later that season, the Scottish international
later suffered a relapse and passed away.

His last resting place was an unmarked grave in Loughborough Cemetery
, with a headstone belatedly unveiled in 2016 after funds were raised by Notts County supporters (Logan played in their 1894 FA Cup winning side).

He's also commemorated in Loughborough by a road named James Logan Way.

1925 John Newton born, Bishop Auckland.
(1944-46)

Wing half Jackie failed to make the grade at SJP but moved on to Hartlepools United, where he played for over a decade, making over 350 appearances.

Newton netted for 'Pools in their epic FA Cup 3rd round tie of January 1957 when they hosted Manchester United's Busby Babes and fought back from a 0-3 deficit back to 3-3, only to be beaten by a late winner.

17,264 were present at the Victoria Ground, which remains their record attendance.

Jackie later played for Ashington, before returning to live in the Durham village of Willington.

1949 Bob Noble born, Newcastle.
(1965-70)

Growing up in South Gosforth, attending Wallsend Technical School and playing for Howdon Boys Club, Bob signed junior forms for Newcastle in August 1965.

Turning professional two years later, Noble was known as a centre half but played some early reserve games at centre forward, scoring twice on his League debut against West Bromwich Albion in September 1966.

Promoted to the senior side for a friendly at Barnsley in November 1968, Bob made the squad for a Division One trip to Southampton four months later but wasn't on the bench (in the days of just one substitute).

Loaned out to Third Division Barrow the following season, Noble was handed a free transfer by Newcastle in 1970 and signed for Bury ahead of the 1970/71 season.

However Bob's time as a Shaker was soon up and he made a permanent return to Barrow in October 1970 - where he was in the same squad as fellow defender John Rawlinson, later known as Spike Rawlings.

Later spells at Colchester United, Southport and Darlington followed before he tried his luck in Australia, playing for Western Suburbs, Inter Monaro and Griffith City - finally hanging up his boots in 1984.

Later managing a Sports Centre in Sydney, Bob passed away during May 2005.

1985 Demba Ba born, Sevres, France.
(2011-13)

Paris-born striker who played youth football for various minor French sides before trying his luck in England with Barnsley and Watford - failing to win a deal after either trial.

Joining French side Rouen in 2005, Demba moved on to Belgian outfit Mouscron in 2006 and in an eventful twelve months, broke his leg but recovered to find form in front of goal and be capped by Senegal.

Signing for Germans Hoffenheim at a cost of £2.5m in 2007, he helped the unfashionable side into the Bundesliga and continued to find the net with regularity.

Hitting a hat trick against Stuttgart in early 2009, a deal was agreed to join Liverpool that summer, only for medical reports to scupper the move (a new deal until 2013 at Hoffenheim followed).

January 2011 saw Ba move to West Ham after a proposed deal to join Stoke City also collapsed on medical grounds, after doubts were again raised over an old knee injury.

Looking to force through a move to England, Ba refused to attend Hoffenheim's winter training camp and flew to London.

While at the Boleyn he managed seven goals but failed to prevent their relegation - and then exercised a contractual option to leave on a free transfer. Being racially abused by a fan at their end-of-season do didn't improve his chances of staying put....

Appearing at SJP in June 2011 for contract talks and a medical, Ba put pen to paper on a three year deal claimed to have cost United £5m in various agent-related "expenses".

And after a sluggish start, he burst into life with a hat trick against Blackburn Rovers at SJP in his sixth competitive outing.

The goals kept on flowing and after a second treble (at Stoke, of all places), Ba signed off with a fine strike at home to Manchester United in the first game of 2012 - before heading off for African Nations Cup duty with Senegal, having netted 15 times.

Returning with national team strike partner Papiss Cisse to United, Ba picked up where he'd left off with the opener against Villa.

However our new number 9 then hogged the goalscoring glory for the rest of that season - Ba enduring a fourteen game scoreless run, although he supplied various assists from a wide role he disliked.

After a close season of departure rumours sparked by Harry Redknapp's revelation of a £7.5m buyout clause, Ba was restored to a central striking role and scored 13 times in just 20 Premier League appearances.

As the January 2013 transfer window drew nearer though, hopes that he would agree a new deal to remain a Magpie receded and  what proved to be his final outing saw Ba net twice in a 3-7 defeat at Arsenal.

Withdrawn from the squad hours before the home meeting with Everton on January 2nd after news of his negotiations with Chelsea was confirmed, Ba moved to Stamford Bridge and promptly netted twice on his debut.

He endured a painful return to SJP a month later, when a stray boot from Fabricio Coloccini broke his nose and saw him substituted before half time in a thrilling game that United won 3-2.

Never a regular starter under Jose Mourinho, claims of a return to Tyneside surfaced in the press, but Demba continued to net when he was given some pitch time.

Toon fans sang his name again, at Anfield in May 2014, reminding the Liverpool faithful of the goal that effectively ended their title hopes when Steven Gerrard slipped over and allowed Ba to score two weeks earlier.

That goal was his fourteenth and last for Chelsea and he joined Turkish side Besiktas  in July 2014 - debuting in the bizarre location of Macclesfield Town's Moss Rose ground in a friendly against German side Mainz.

24 goals in his first season included five in the Europa League, but Besiktas failed to end their wait for a title, finishing third behind champions Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

Ba joined Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua on a three-year deal in June 2015, scoring 20 goals in 29 league and cup appearances.

However, a badly broken leg sustained in July 2016 sidelined him for six months and he regained fitness with a second spell at Besiktas, joining the Turkish side on loan in January 2017 for the rest of the season.

Demba then joined rivals Göztepe, on a free transfer during January 2018 - linking up with fellow former Magpie Yoan Gouffran.

However, that was a short-lived pairing, with June 2018 bringing a return to China with Shanghai Shenhua - brought in to replace injury victim Obafemi Martins.

By January 2019, Demba was a free agent once again, signing for Istanbul Basaksehir and winning the Super Lig title in 2020.

2021 saw a free agent switch to Swiss side FC Lugano but after only three months he announced his playing retirement.

April 2022 saw Ba become Chairman of the recently-merged US side ASC San Diego.

1986 Yoan Gouffran born, Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, France. (2013-17)

The third arrival at Gallowgate from France during the January 2013 transfer window, striker Gouffran had played at SJP some three months earlier in a Europa League tie that Bordeaux lost 0-3.

Joining Bordeaux from Caen at a cost of €6.5m in 2008, Yoann was in the final six months of his contract when United made their move after losing out to QPR in their attempt to sign Loic Remy from Marseille.

Able to play as a central striker or in a wide role, the former France U21 international had scored 12 goals in the first half of the season when moving to Newcastle in a deal claimed to be between £1.5m and £2.1m.

Goals at Spurs, West Bromwich Albion and vitally, QPR plus a number of industrious performances saw fans warm to Yoan, although issues in adjusting to the pace of the Premier League saw him routinely substituted during games.

Gouffran's second season as a Magpie saw him net six times in the Premier League plus once in the Capital One Cup.

However, a noticeable downturn in form followed Yohan Cabaye's exit in January 2014 and he remained out on the flanks for the rest of the campaign - despite United's chronic lack of goals.

His lack of form continued into the 2014/15 campaign when he netted just twice in 33 appearances, eight from the bench.

And Yoan's contribution to our relegation season was negligible with the last of nine outings in league and cup coming before the arrival of Rafa Benitez in March 2016.

However, it proved to be a different story following relegation, as Gouffran became a cornerstone of United's successful promotion challenge and even made a return to his former striking role.

An effort at Derby County early in the season was his first in over 18 months and he went on to bag seven in all competitions in what was the final year of his current deal.

A contract extension was reportedly offered to him by United but instead Yoan opted to become a free agent before moving on to Turkish Super League side Göztepe.

He signed for Armenian Premier League side Ararat-Armenia in February 2020 who won their second league title in a row.

He announced his playing retirement in October 2021.

1986 There was a first victory for Jack Charlton as Republic of Ireland boss, as his side beat hosts Iceland 2-1 in a friendly match staged in Reykjavik.

The Irish side included Newcastle's John Anderson, along with two future Magpie coaches - Tony Galvin (assistant to Ossie Ardiles) and Chris Hughton.

1998 Peytar Reid's mackems had looked en route to a Premiership return at Wembley, until the Addicks found late equalisers in both normal time and then the added half hour.

*&#?*&@*!

Former/future Magpie Lee Clark was then subbed before the game was resolved on penalties, with 'keeper Sasa Ilic equal to a weak effort from the odious Michael Gray.

Sasa celebrates his MBE -
mackem beating effort...

There was to be a sting in the tail though, as this proved to the final appearance that Lionel Perez made for the mackems - ending his time at the club by picking the ball out of his net eleven times in all.

His next club? Newcastle on a free transfer. And they said Kenny Dalglish had no sense of humour....

2001
Goalkeeper Steve Harper agreed a new four year contract at SJP, commenting:

"I am delighted to have agreed a new contract with Newcastle United. Nothing quite beats playing in front of a full house at St James' Park, and I hope to get a chance to stake my claim for a first-team place when the pre-season friendly matches come around in July and then it will be up to the manager."

2002 Ireland played their final World Cup warm-up match, beating "J" League side Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Magpies duo Andy O'Brien and Shay Given featured.

2003 Sir Bobby Robson took to BBC Radio 5 in defence of new signing Lee Bowyer, telling listeners that he'd not taken the decision lightly:

"We had to give it an awful lot of consideration. I've met the boy, I've met his girlfriend and I was very warmed by both of them.

"Lee knows that he made an error, but he needs a second chance. He is obviously aware of what happened, but that's in the past.

"We feel that we can support him and give him guidance. We have a lot of fine players at Newcastle, we have a good squad, we have a lot of good characters and we just think that, once he settles into our situation, he'll turn out to be a fine pro and a fine boy.

"I'm very confident about that. We did wrestle. We knew there was a slight problem in that sense with Lee Bowyer, but the past is the past.

"The boy needs a chance. Many other clubs would have given him that chance, but we've given it to him and I'm sure that the boy will respond and he will be very pleased to be at Newcastle United, and I think that he will have a good long career with us."

Well, he certainly got the wrestle bit right.....

2007 Sir John Hall spoke publicly after having sold Cameron Halls' stake in Newcastle United to Mike Ashley:

"We've a had a few people come to us - quite a few - but many of them weren't the right ones for the club.

"I feel basically Mike Ashley and his team - they're the right ones. He'll take us to, in my view, a new dimension.
(see 2009 below...)

"I'm certain he'll be good for the club or I wouldn't have sold to him. I've talked to him enough to be assured they've got the passion for the club as we all have.

"You can't run a club without being attached to it. You can't run a club without feeling for it because it's about people, it's about the passion of the people. He knows the supporters are passionate.

"They've got to go for the rest of the shares. If they get them, I'm sure they'll invest.

"He's made a takeover bid for the rest of the shares and it's now up to the rest of the directors to decide what to do. Someone like him will probably like control to make the investment."

2009
NUFC MD, Derek Llambias, released this statement the day after relegation:

"Being relegated from the Premier League is a huge disappointment for everyone involved with Newcastle United.

"We are all hurting and I feel desperately sorry for everyone associated with Newcastle United; for Mike, who has invested heavily in the Club, and for all the supporters who have given the team magnificent backing up and down the country all season long.

"Mike and I will sit down with Alan
(Shearer) this week to discuss how the Club moves forward again, and I hope to be able to say more to our supporters later this week."

2014
Having dropped out of his own stag do in Las Vegas following the call-up, Rob Elliot made a senior international bow for Ireland.

The Newcastle 'keeper completed 90 minutes of a 0-0 friendly draw with Turkey in Dublin.

Strip, not stripper

2015 Derby County sacked Steve McClaren after a disastrous end to the season saw them slip from promotion favourites to eighth and miss out on the playoffs.

One win in nine games after Christmas and just a single success in the final five games followed the emergence of interest in him from Newcastle - who remained intent on securing him, especially now that compensation was no longer an issue.

2016
On the anniversary of his Champions League Final victory with Liverpool, Rafa Benitez confirmed he would ignore the relegation break clause in his Newcastle contract and honour the three year deal agreed just over two months earlier.

Rafa returned to Tyneside from his home on the Wirral and was then unveiled (again) in a press conference at SJP.

2022 Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff signed a three year contract extension to remain at Gallowgate, just weeks before he would have become a free agent.

2024
Manchester United's 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup Final dashed hopes of European qualification for Eddie Howe's Magpies.

Victory gave the eighth-placed Red Devils a place in the Europa League, pushing sixth-placed Chelsea into the Conference League and leaving seventh-placed Newcastle empty-handed.
