Match action is online here
Sunday saw Newcastle round off their trophy-winning season by claiming a
place in next season's Champions League tournament - thanks in no small part
to the match-winning efforts of Manchester United.
Before kick-off, the Red Devils were on course to set a new club record of
just six home league wins in a season, but Ruben Amorim's mob rode their
luck before scoring twice to inflict a priceless defeat on Aston Villa at
Old Trafford.
The Villans endured a trio of contentious decisions that began with the
dismissal of Emiliano Martinez in first half added time, continued with a
Morgan Rogers goal that referee Thomas Bramall ruled out and concluded with
a penalty award that led to the home side's crucial second
goal.
At Gallowgate meanwhile, the Magpies were inflicting cruelty on their fans
in the form of a shapeless, aimless performance that helped a certain
wearside custodian keep a clean sheet - although our shoddiness was as
pivotal as his proficiency....
That pain increased when an unmarked Carlos Alcaraz was left alone to head
Vitalii Mykolenko's centre past Nick Pope in the Gallowgate goal just after
the hour mark.
Barely 10 minutes later however, roars from those fans inside SJP with a
functioning phone signalled that events elsewhere were shaping our destiny
in the shape of a Manchester United goal - and then another one for good
measure.
A season when results elsewhere never seemed to benefit us concluded with
the biggest payback since Villa knocked Brighton off the top of the
Championship in 2017.
That it was Manchester United also had a certain symmetry - a year to the
day that their FA Cup Final win over Manchester City deprived us of Europe.
Concentrating on the domestic cups this season has proved to be a canny
ploy....
Newcastle's attempts to dredge up an equaliser that would be meaningless in
terms of qualification chances as long as Villa lost saw them end up with an
obviously unfit Alexander Isak flanked by Callum Wilson and William Osula.
Anthony Gordon had kept his place in the side, but failed to appear after
the break following a shift as unproductive as his colleagues.
Home players clustered on the edge of the Leazes box as the visitors
acknowledged their supporters and the giant screen beamed out the latest
scores elsewhere.
Moments later, the Champions League logo appeared on the scoreboard as the
competition anthem rang out, confirming that there was no late collapse at
Old Trafford and Eddie Howe's side had secured fifth place on goal
difference.
Wilson confirmed his exit from the club with a tearful solo lap of honour
before the now-familiar post-match scenes unfolded, culminating in a group
photo taken in front of the Gallowgate End featuring the Carabao Cup, club
CEO Yasir Al-Rumayyan and countless squad relatives and bairns.
When people had urged the players all week to "Do it for Bobby" -
we didn't realise they meant Charlton....
The fact that Newcastle are back in the Champions League will be remembered
long after today's events. An upturn following the defeat at Brentford in
December that dropped them into twelfth position was followed by a sequence
of results meant that today's outcome didn't matter.
They may have stumbled over the line with sections of the team running on
fumes, but they got there. Somehow.
For Howe, the relief is two-fold; not only achieving qualification but also
securing the financial rewards for the club that finally allow him to significantly
reshape his squad - something that today underlined is long overdue.
Rightfully, there's also celebration for the manager, who reflected on the
season just finished as follows:
"First domestic trophy in 70 years, Champions League place, just how
big an achievement is it? It’s a massive achievement. A massive season for
us."

Thanks
to everyone who entered our prediction competition to win copies of the new
book by ex-Magpie Paul Ferris.
We asked you to
predict Newcastle's finishing place in the Premier League which
didn't prevent several readers from submitting score predictions - all of
which were wrong...
The overwhelming majority of
entrants went with a fourth place finish, only a handful correctly
predicting fifth spot.
A random draw of those correct answers then brought the following three
winners:
Mike Hully
Bill Randolph
Tone Smith
Following his well-received memoirs, "The Boy on the Shed"
and "The Magic in the Tin", "Once Upon a Toon"
collects anecdotes and experiences from Paul's three stints working at

A host of scarcely believable stories are retold, featuring a cast of Magpie
characters from Joe Harvey to Alan Shearer via Gazza, Kevin Keegan and Bruce
****ing Springsteen...

Eddie Howe:
"I think we’ve had an incredible season, and
the players deserve a lot of credit and praise, in terms of how they’ve
handled the season, how they’ve conducted themselves.
"We’ve had some sticky moments, we’ve had some
massive ups and downs, but we got there and it was fully deserved.
"In the beginning of the season, there was a
little bit of uncertainty, but we’ve always given our best. I think we’ve
tried to give real honesty in our performances.
"The players have given their all, and with the
amount of games, including the cup run, the players’ mindsets have been
incredible.
"You know what the hypotheticals are, but now you
have to do it. First domestic trophy in 70 years, Champions League place,
just how big an achievement is it? It’s a massive achievement. A massive
season for us.
"To win a cup was a game-changer for us. The
quality of teams and players should never be underestimated. It’s enough
to get back into the Champions League, which really sets the appetite for
what next season could be.
"I almost think we were too desperate to win today - I've said that
maybe before in games, where that desperation can sometimes lead to poor
decisions and a disjointed performance.
"Obviously, as you go through the season and you adjust to what you're
achieving, sometimes you think differently, but overall this will be
remembered as an unbelievable season in the future for Newcastle to look
back on and reflect on.
"You’re thinking, ‘This might not happen today, what’s happening
elsewhere?’. That was where my brain went.
"The last stage of the game was strange because we
knew bar a miracle we were going to get there, but we still wanted to try to
come back and win.
"The achievement is huge. Naturally, when we lose the game, there is a
disappointment. I think we have to override that with the 38 games of the
season to qualify for the competition. It is a huge moment for the club.
"The experience we had there the first time (in 2023) will help
us no end, I think.
"We felt we grew through the competition, so I
think we are stronger. I think we are better prepared both physically and
mentally for the competition ahead."
On transfers:
"I do think it's a window we have to be active in
and I'm sure we will be. We haven't recruited strongly in three windows and
I think eventually that catches up with you continue not to change.
"We felt that potentially last summer which is why
it's an amazing achievement from the players to see this season through. But
yes, it is going to be a big transfer window for us.
"The power of the Champions League and the pull of the Champions League
is huge and we can’t get away from that, the excitement that this will
bring for the people here.
"And of course it’s a selling point for us now,
it’s an opportunity for us to sell that dream to future players that might
be considering coming to us.
"We’ve got to get the financials right, we’ve
got to get every other aspect of trying to sign players here right, and
hopefully we can do that.
"Speed is key for us and I have reiterated that many times
internally. Speed is key because we have to be dynamic, we have to be ready
to conclude things very quickly because good players don’t hang around for
long.
"That’s always been my thought and my message on recruitment really
because you can have a period when you think you have time - but then you
look around quickly and you see that time has elapsed and you missed
opportunities you won’t get again.
"That’s what we will be trying but the reality of that is it’s not
always in your hands - but we will do our best to do things early.”
On Callum Wilson:
"Let's wait and see. We're
going to sit down and talk with his representatives.
"What I can say is Callum Wilson is
and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who
epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are.
"Really
professional, brave. I mean, to come here and be the number nine in the
manner and the moment that he did in the club's history, it was a difficult
moment.
"The club needed hope and Callum
gave them hope. He led the line with that responsibility and the pressure
that that role brings unbelievably well.
"He
brings a positivity to the group. He's a leader within the changing room.
He's just been incredible and let's wait and see what happens.
"It
was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There's
still so much respect there between the two.”

Stats:
Following last week's 0-1 defeat at Arsenal, Newcastle lost successive
Premier League games without scoring for the first time since March 2023
(Liverpool home lost 0-2 then Manchester City away lost 0-2).
One has to go back to 2011/12 to find the last top-flight campaign that
ended in back to back defeats for the Magpies (Manchester City home 0-2,
Everton away 1-3). Then as now, David Moyes was Toffees boss and United
finished the season in fifth position.
Everton - and their goalkeeper - became the only side to have prevented
Newcastle from scoring at least once in the PL this season. The Goodison
encounter ended 0-0.
The Magpies debuted their 2025/26 season Adidas home kit, the first time
that they'd previewed a kit in the last game of the season since 2019/20
(Liverpool home lost 0-1).

NUFC are one of 36 clubs qualifying for the League stage.
All 36 clubs play 8 matches against different opponents in a single
league. For the purpose of the draw the clubs are divided into 4 pots. The
CL title-holder is placed in pot 1.
The remaining places of pot 1 and the other pots are filled according to the
club ranking. Each club will be drawn against two opponents from each of the
4 pots, playing one match at home and one match away against them.
Clubs from the same country will not be drawn against each other in the
league phase and each team plays at most against a maximum of two opponents
from any other country (providing a deadlock in the draw can be avoided).
The top 8 clubs of the league stage qualify directly for the round of 16,
while the clubs at rank 9 to 24 go to the play-off round of the knockout
stage. The clubs that finish at rank 25 to 36 are eliminated. In the
knockout stage there is no country protection.

"An incredible
effort"

Speaking to the media on
Friday, Magpies boss Eddie Howe had this to say about Mark Allison
and his charity exploits:
"I'm not sure I could be doing that at this moment in time....but an
incredible effort, first and foremost, to run across the United States of
America isn't something that everyone can do. So I'd just like to wish him
all the luck.
"I think when you're feeling tired, and I will always say this to the
players, you've just got to try and keep going. From his perspective, just
put one leg in front of the other and really you're going to have to go
deep.
"You're going to have to go to all your motivational tools that you
have and he's probably going to spend a lot of time going back to his family
and his childhood experiences to try and get through in amongst the pain.
"I have heard about his story and I think it's an incredible effort.
What a brilliant cause to raise money for. So congratulations to him and
fingers crossed he can finish the job."

Born Or Died:
1894 Edward Stanley Dixon born, Choppington,
Northumberland
(1914-23)
Inside right who joined United from local side Barrington
Albion at a cost of £5 in February 1914, debuting for the first team in a 1-2
home defeat by Liverpool that April.
After just one further appearance (at home to Bradford a year later), league
football was suspended and Ed (also known as Stan) served with the Army
Engineers Corps.
Playing for United in the Northern Victory League of 1918/19, Dixon soon found
a starting berth once Division One resumed the following season - hitting his
first goals with a hat trick at home to Chelsea.
Gradually falling from favour, Ed's final senior outing for Newcastle came in
a 1-0 win at Oldham on New Years Day 1924.
And within three months he was back in Lancashire, after Blackburn Rovers paid
£1,100 for his services.
Nominated as a reserve for both England and the Football League Select, Dixon
ended his career at Hull City - playing on past his retirement in 1930 for
East Riding Amateurs.
Settling in Hull and working as a cinema manager, he later returned to his
native Northumberland. He died in August 1979.
1949 Death
of Dave Willis, 67.
(1907-13)
1957 Kenny
Mitchell born, S*nderland.
(1975-81)
Although most frequently used in defence, Kenny appeared in
both attack and midfield during his time at SJP - and was also back-up 'keeper
for the reserve side.
Debuting in a 2-2 home draw with Manchester City in February 1977, Mitchell
eventually exited in the summer of 1981, as manager Arthur Cox overhauled his
first team squad.
While at Gallowgate he had a loan spell in Scotland with Morton, while
also playing one summer in the USA for Tulsa Roughnecks.
A move to Darlington saw him play a season at Feethams before embarking on a
career in the non-league with Workington, Seaham Red Star, Gateshead,
Newcastle Blue Star, North Shields and back to Red Star again.
Kenny also played out in Finland for Kuusysi Lahti in 1984 and four years
later was a losing finalist in the 1988 FA Sunday Cup Final with Wearsiders
Humbledon & Plains Farm, along with fellow ex-Mag Kevin Todd.
He also coached the Plains Farm U18 side but died in September 2019 at the age
of just 62.

Following games in Milan and Vienna, what was proving
to be a stormy end-of-season tour of the continent reached
Bratislava and a then-rare Sunday fixture.
"Goal Avalanche" was the Evening
Chronicle headline and their correspondent claiming
that, "the defeat was brought about by a
combination of bad refereeing, amazing bad luck and the
brilliance of the home keeper who gave a brilliant
display."
The hosts struck twice in the first five minutes
before Hughie Gallacher replied and after the second half
saw a trio of offside looking goals all allowed for the
locals, "the game then degenerated into a
scramble."

Newcastle's closing home league game of the season
kicked off at 6.30pm on a Whit Monday night.
Proceedings began badly when Roy Bentley's 14th minute
penalty was saved by 'keeper Ernie Gregory.
The visitors then galloped into a three goal lead before a
classic piece of Len Shackleton trickery and a close range
finish from Jackie Milburn reduced the arrears and set up
a classic finish.
A point would elude the hosts however; Gregory touching an
86th minute shot by Milburn on to the goal frame.
Newly-appointed Magpies boss George Martin was present
ahead of his official installation.

After four games in New Zealand, United's tour moved
on to Fiji for two further friendlies - the first of which
was staged at Prince Charles Park in the town of Nadi.
Lautoka midfielder Kelemedi ‘Cheetah’ Vosuga opened
the scoring, with Nadi forward Rusiate Waqa doubling the
lead.
Striker Sam Work of Lautoka then netted for Billy Singh's
men after the break - and they also had a fourth strike
ruled out.
Peter Beardsley encouraged star man Vosuga to visit
Tyneside for a trial but he failed to take up the offer
and later played club football in both Australia and New
Zealand.
1992 Newcastle
midfielder Kevin Sheedy won what turned out to be the
penultimate senior cap of his international career, as the
Republic of Ireland beat Albania 2-0 in a World Cup
Qualifier at Lansdowne Road.
1996 Wembley joy for Bradford City, as they beat
Notts County in the playoffs to make into the second tier
of domestic football.
Their opening goal in a 2-0 win was especially memorable;
the scorer beating four players before blasting home a
memorable effort. His name? Des Hamilton....
2001 Peter Beardsley became a full-time employee of
Newcastle United for the third time after accepting a post
in the United Youth Academy working with Kenny Wharton and
Director Alan Irvine.
Beardsley had already
been working with the Academy youngsters for three months
on a part-time basis as a striking coach.
2004 Portsmouth completed the free transfer signing
of defender Andy Griffin, who had let his contract run
down at SJP.
2007 Despite
positive press comments, Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp
passed up the chance to sign former Magpie Titus Bramble
on a free transfer.
Other clubs linked with the former Ipswich Town defender
Bramble included Fulham, Celtic and Birmingham City. Wigan
were nowhere to be seen at this stage.
2007
Newcastle winger Alan O'Brien won his fifth full cap for
the Republic of Ireland - and made his first start - in a
1-1 draw against Bolivia in a friendly staged in Boston,
USA.
Within weeks the out-of-favour O'Brien had left SJP to
join Scottish side Hibernian.
2009 24 hours after MD Derek
Llambias went public with his thoughts, Magpies owner Mike
Ashley issued his own statement:
"Seeing Newcastle United relegated from the Premier
League has been a catastrophe for us all.
"I fully accept that mistakes were made during this
and previous seasons and I am very sorry for that.
"I would like to say sorry to our magnificent
supporters who have turned up in their thousands, home and
away, up and down the country and who have given the team
amazing backing throughout.
"And I would also say sorry to all of the Club's
hard-working staff, who have gone about their jobs all
year long.
"Bringing Alan Shearer back to Newcastle United was
the best decision I have made. Alan and his staff did all
they could to try and keep us up in the short space of
time they had.
"Talks are now ongoing between us about how we can
take this Club forward again."
2019
Ex-Magpie, Lee Bowyer inflicted a second Wembley
defeat for the mackems when his Charlton Athletic side
scored six seconds from the end of normal time to clinch
promotion from the third tier.
The unwashed had taken an early lead thanks to an own goal
but back came the Addicks before half-time to level.
With extra time and possibly penalties looming, Patrick
Bauer secured victory and left the inbreds languishing in
League One.
2022 Newcastle confirmed that U23 forward Tom Allan
had left the club following the expiration of his
contract.
He'd made a solitary senior competitive appearance, coming
off the bench during an FA Cup tie against Rochdale in
2020.
Also departing were Ryan Barrett, Brad Cross, Oisín
McEntee, Mo Sangare, Regan Thomson, Jake Turner and Adam
Wilson.
2023 Magpies boss Eddie Howe confirmed that he was
hopeful of securing both Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie on
12 month contract extensions.
2024 On-loan Magpie Ryan Fraser was in the
Southampton side that
defeated Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley in the Championship
promotion playoff Final.
SJP old boy Adam Armstrong scored the only goal of the
game for the Saints.
