Howe award confirmed Wednesday
saw City councillors approve the motion awarding Eddie Howe the
Honorary Freedom of the City of Newcastle, in recognition of winning the
Carabao Cup.
Howe is the latest Magpie-related addition to the list of those afforded
this honour, which now consists of:
2025 Eddie Howe
2022 Shaka Hislop
2017 Freddy Shepherd (Chairman)
2017 Bruce Shepherd (Director)
2005 Bobby Robson
2000 Alan Shearer
1993 NUFC*
1980 Jackie Milburn
1966 William McKeag (Chairman)
1909 William Sanderson (Director)
* the club itself was collectively honoured, "in recognition of over
100 years' sporting achievement in the Football League and FA Cup and
European competitions and of the Club's contribution to the reputation of
the City and its place in the hearts of Geordies everywhere."
Update:
Isak pulls out To
nobody's great shock, the Swedish FA confirmed on Tuesday that Alexander Isak
had withdrawn from the national squad ahead of two games next month.
An unspecified minor injury was given as the reason for pulling out, media
outlets closer to home claiming that the striker has a groin issue - which
would explain his unremarkable club performances in recent weeks.
It's unclear whether a period of rest or surgery will follow.
Update:
Mitchell bombshell
From NUFC, Tuesday:
Paul Mitchell, Newcastle United’s Sporting Director, will leave the
club by mutual consent at the end of June 2025.
Paul joined the club in July 2024,
reuniting him with Magpies CEO Darren Eales, who had previously recruited
Paul to Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.
Due to health reasons, Darren will be
stepping down as CEO in the near future.
During Paul’s tenure as Sporting
Director, the club won its first major domestic trophy in 70 years by
lifting the Carabao Cup in March 2025 and has secured Champions League
football for the 2025/26 campaign.
Paul Mitchell said: "I'd like to
thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year,
including Eddie Howe, Becky Langley, the players, staff, owners and fans. It
has been an honour to be part of the club and to work with some incredible
people.
"I'm leaving at a time that is
right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales - someone who I
have worked so closely with in my career - moving on soon.
"The club is in great hands on and
off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building.
"I'd like to wish everyone
connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future."
Paul leaves with the club’s best
wishes and the Board would like to express its sincere thanks to him for his
professionalism and diligent service.
This unexpected development looks to have caught the media on the hop,
following reports that Eddie Howe was meeting Mitchell to discuss transfers
on Sunday night. Both men had earlier featured in the post-game
celebrations.
There seemed to be an assumption that the pair had developed a working
relationship since an apparent power struggle following Mitchell's
installation last July. That version of events now seems flawed.
Mitchell departs having failed to oversee any meaningful acquisitions since
belatedly succeeding Dan Ashworth and speculation over the next Sporting
Director has already included current Head of recruitment Steve Nickson.
The 60 year-old who has been at United for over a decade was linked with the
post following Ashworth's departure, but remained at SJP to work under
Mitchell in a diluted role. Messrs Tonali, Isak, Gordon, Joelinton, Bruno
and Botman were all recruited under his guidance.
Andy Howe remains in post at United as assistant head of first team
recruitment, assuming that role in February 2024 after two years in a
scouting position. He's Eddie's nephew.
There's no confirmation as yet whether club Performance Director James Bunce
will remain in post, having previously worked alongside Mitchell at
Southampton and Monaco.
2025/26:
Korea opportunities

From NUFC, Tuesday:
Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the
club's history this summer.
Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will
take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest
summer sporting events.
Eddie Howe's men will head to South
Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select
XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Venues and fixture dates are set to be
announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea
as well as those wishing to travel to support us.
This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with
four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup
Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.
The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI
will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near
Seoul.

Thanks
to everyone who entered our prediction competition to win copies of the new
book by ex-Magpie Paul Ferris.
We asked you to
predict Newcastle's finishing place in the Premier League which
didn't prevent several readers from submitting score predictions - all of
which were wrong...
The overwhelming majority of
entrants went with a fourth place finish, only a handful correctly
predicting fifth spot.
A random draw of those correct answers then brought the following three
winners:
Mike Hully
Bill Randolph
Tone Smith
Following his well-received memoirs, "The Boy on the Shed"
and "The Magic in the Tin", "Once Upon a Toon"
collects anecdotes and experiences from Paul's three stints working at
St.James' Park across three decades.
A host of scarcely believable stories are retold, featuring a cast of Magpie
characters from Joe Harvey to Alan Shearer via Gazza, Kevin Keegan and Bruce
****ing Springsteen...

Champions League).
Champions League
2025/26:
NUFC are one of 36 clubs qualifying for the League stage.
All 36 clubs play 8 matches against different opponents in a single
league. For the purpose of the draw the clubs are divided into 4 pots. The
CL title-holder is placed in pot 1.
The remaining places of pot 1 and the other pots are filled according to the
club ranking. Each club will be drawn against two opponents from each of the
4 pots, playing one match at home and one match away against them.
Clubs from the same country will not be drawn against each other in the
league phase and each team plays at most against a maximum of two opponents
from any other country (providing a deadlock in the draw can be avoided).
The top 8 clubs of the league stage qualify directly for the round of 16,
while the clubs at rank 9 to 24 go to the play-off round of the knockout
stage. The clubs that finish at rank 25 to 36 are eliminated. In the
knockout stage there is no country protection.

Newcastle
United have confirmed a one year contract extension for Dan Burn, keeping
the England international defender at Gallowgate until 2027.
Burn, who turned 33 earlier this month, has made 148 appearances in all

in January 2022.
Sky Sports report that provision for an additional 12 month deal
exists in Burn's revised contract.

A 2-1 win over Sheffield
United at Wembley on Saturday confirmed that the mackems will return to the
Premier League next season for the first time since 2016/17.
The red and whites will join Burnley and Leeds United in the top flight,
with Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City returning to the
Championship.
That all means that Newcastle's PL mileage in 2025/26 will drop by a
whopping 1,300 miles from 9,462 to 8,162.

28th May |

Born Or Died:
1908 Stan Barber born, Wallsend.
(1925-28)

Left half
whose sole senior appearance for came when promoted from
the reserves to replace Willie Gibson during March 1928.
Sadly the Magpies were beaten 1-5 away
at Burnley in that game and Barber was transferred
to Bristol City that summer.
Later playing for Exeter City, Stan was part of the Grecians side who reached
the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup in the 1930/31 season before losing to the
mackems.
Ending his professional career with Brighton & Hove Albion, Barber
returned to Tyneside and played on for Wallsend.
He passed away in April 1984.

1909
William Birkett Forster born, Walker. (1932-38)

Right back
acquired from Howdon British Legion for £25 during May 1932, initially on
amateur forms before signing professionally in November of that year.
Forster's senior debut came when deputising for Joe Richardson in a 1-1 home
draw with Burnley in March 1936, with two further outings during the following
season.
Joining Southend United in a £150 deal during August 1938, Billy made just
half a dozen appearances for the Shrimpers that season before moving again.
Signing for Bristol Rovers, the outbreak of WW2 quickly curtailed his career
however and by September 1942 he was back on his native Tyneside,
guesting for Gateshead.
Forster's death was recorded in Whitley Bay during February 1975.

1914 Henry
Clifton born, Newburn.
(1938-46)

Another player who lost his best years to World War II, inside
forward "Harry" made an £8,500 switch to Tyneside from Chesterfield
in June 1938, having previously been rejected by the Magpies.
Undergoing an unsuccessful trial at West Bromwich Albion early in his career,
The Spireites signed Harry from Scotswood in 1933 on the advice of their North
East scout Harry Dormand and he first featured at senior level on New Years
Day 1935.
and collected a record transfer fee for him five years later after netting 26
goals in the 1937/38 season. He'd ended that campaign with an England call-up
and infamously gave a Nazi salute in Berlin before a friendly international,
although he didn't play.
Making a scoring debut against Plymouth Argyle at SJP that August, Clifton
then added 16 more that season as United ended up with a mid-table spot in
Division Two.
The onset of World War II however saw his career curtailed and Harry saw
military service in the Middle East, guesting for Chelsea when back in Blighty.
A single England cap came in December 1939, scoring in a 2-1 win over Scotland
in front of 15,000 spectators at SJP.
Returned to SJP, Clifton played in United's two-legged FA Cup tie against
Barnsley in the 1945/46 season but by the time the Football League resumed
fully in 1946 though, he was a Grimsby Town player.
Later appearing for Goole Town and Sutton Town, Clifton then worked in the
steel industry at Sheepbridge near Chesterfield and also for a time at
Arkwright Colliery.
Harry's Spireite connections resurfaced in March 1968, when he was made
Steward of the newly-built Saltergate Club.
He died back on Tyneside in 1998.
1986 Charles N'Zogbia born, Harfleur, France. (2004-09)
Tipped off by a French-based contact, Magpies scout Charlie
Woods arranged a trial during July 2004 for left winger Charles on the
strength of video clips.
Instantly impressing in a training ground game, United signed the 18 year-old
but encountered resistance from N'Zogbia's former club Le Havre - who had
failed to reach agreement on a professional deal.
The dispute ultimately involved FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport,
the former deciding that Le Havre's claim on the player was against European
law and the latter setting an initial compensation amount of £250,000 -
although appeals continued until at least 2007.
Signing in August 2004 and becoming the last arrival of Sir Bobby Robson's
reign, Charles debuted for the reserves in a 1-2 loss to Wolves at Molineux
shortly after.
Amid "Zog on the Tyne" headlines, a senior bow came the following
weekend at home to Blackburn Rovers, handed the briefest of debuts by caretaker
boss John Carver, consisting of ten seconds and no touches.
Incoming manager Graeme Souness didn't turn to N'Zogbia for three months and
it took a year for his first Premier League goal, against Fulham at Gallowgate.
Scoring in the first two games after Glenn Roeder took over, the midfielder delighted and annoyed fans
and team mates equally with sublime dribbles and pinpoint crosses followed by
elementary errors.
Responding poorly when circumstances saw Sam Allardyce forced to play him at left
back in 2007 although having recently put pen to paper on a new five year
deal.
Earning praise from Kevin Keegan for his role in steering the Magpies to
safety, talk of joining Spurs or Arsenal to be nearer to his capital-based relatives
was followed by press claims of interest from the rather less obvious Wigan
Athletic.
Revealing his wish to leave United during late 2008 in the wake of Joe Kinnear
infamously mispronouncing his name as "Insomnia" his final game was
a 0-3 loss at Blackburn Rovers in January - Shay Given also bowing out that
day at Ewood Park.
Charles joined Wigan in a part-exchange deal involving Ryan Taylor and helped
the Latics to a mid-table top-flight finish as his former club suffered
relegation.
2010 saw Charles in the
news for several reasons: rejecting a move to Birmingham City, arrested for getting a stand-in to complete the
theory
section of his driving test and winning a first full French cap.
The latter came after 10 U21 outings, appearing in a 1-2 loss to Norway: the first game
after France's World Cup exit calamity prompted a squad revamp.
In classic style Zog returned to SJP two months later, scoring twice in
quick succession for the Latics in a 2-2 draw.
The final hours of the January 2011 transfer window saw United
supposedly bid for Zog after selling Andy Carroll to Liverpool although
no business was done.
Those same links resurfaced in May 2011, although he eventually joined Aston
Villa, the following two seasons saw him play regularly for a collectively average
side.
Missing the whole of 2013/14 after rupturing his Achilles while on holiday in Miami,
Charles successfully returned to action in 2014/15 but dropped out of the
first team picture following the dismissal of Paul Lambert and a revolving
door of policy of replacement managers.
Leaving Villa Park as a free agent in June 2016 following his side's
relegation, Zog had an unsuccessful trial at the mackems before Nantes offered
him a contract.
However that was withdrawn after medical tests indicated a heart defect,
Charles forced into retirement (reports that he had joined Indian Premier League side Kerala Blasters were
false).

2001 Jacob Ramsey born, Birmingham. (2025-present)
