Howe award confirmed
Wednesday
saw City councillors approve the motion awarding Eddie Howe the
Honorary Freedom of the City of Newcastle, in recognition of winning the
Carabao Cup.
Howe is the latest Magpie-related addition to the list of those afforded
this honour, which now consists of:
2025 Eddie Howe
2022 Shaka Hislop
2017 Freddy Shepherd (Chairman)
2017 Bruce Shepherd (Director)
2005 Bobby Robson
2000 Alan Shearer
1993 NUFC*
1980 Jackie Milburn
1966 William McKeag (Chairman)
1909 William Sanderson (Director)
* the club itself was collectively honoured, "in recognition of over
100 years' sporting achievement in the Football League and FA Cup and
European competitions and of the Club's contribution to the reputation of
the City and its place in the hearts of Geordies everywhere."
Update:
Isak pulls out To
nobody's great shock, the Swedish FA confirmed on Tuesday that Alexander Isak
had withdrawn from the national squad ahead of two games next month.
An unspecified minor injury was given as the reason for pulling out, media
outlets closer to home claiming that the striker has a groin issue - which
would explain his unremarkable club performances in recent weeks.
It's unclear whether a period of rest or surgery will follow.
Update:
Mitchell bombshell
From NUFC, Tuesday:
Paul Mitchell, Newcastle United’s Sporting Director, will leave the
club by mutual consent at the end of June 2025.
Paul joined the club in July 2024,
reuniting him with Magpies CEO Darren Eales, who had previously recruited
Paul to Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.
Due to health reasons, Darren will be
stepping down as CEO in the near future.
During Paul’s tenure as Sporting
Director, the club won its first major domestic trophy in 70 years by
lifting the Carabao Cup in March 2025 and has secured Champions League
football for the 2025/26 campaign.
Paul Mitchell said: "I'd like to
thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year,
including Eddie Howe, Becky Langley, the players, staff, owners and fans. It
has been an honour to be part of the club and to work with some incredible
people.
"I'm leaving at a time that is
right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales - someone who I
have worked so closely with in my career - moving on soon.
"The club is in great hands on and
off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building.
"I'd like to wish everyone
connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future."
Paul leaves with the club’s best
wishes and the Board would like to express its sincere thanks to him for his
professionalism and diligent service.
This unexpected development looks to have caught the media on the hop,
following reports that Eddie Howe was meeting Mitchell to discuss transfers
on Sunday night. Both men had earlier featured in the post-game
celebrations.
There seemed to be an assumption that the pair had developed a working
relationship since an apparent power struggle following Mitchell's
installation last July. That version of events now seems flawed.
Mitchell departs having failed to oversee any meaningful acquisitions since
belatedly succeeding Dan Ashworth and speculation over the next Sporting
Director has already included current Head of recruitment Steve Nickson.
The 60 year-old who has been at United for over a decade was linked with the
post following Ashworth's departure, but remained at SJP to work under
Mitchell in a diluted role. Messrs Tonali, Isak, Gordon, Joelinton, Bruno
and Botman were all recruited under his guidance.
Andy Howe remains in post at United as assistant head of first team
recruitment, assuming that role in February 2024 after two years in a
scouting position. He's Eddie's nephew.
There's no confirmation as yet whether club Performance Director James Bunce
will remain in post, having previously worked alongside Mitchell at
Southampton and Monaco.

Korea opportunities

From NUFC, Tuesday:
Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the
club's history this summer.
Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will
take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest
summer sporting events.
Eddie Howe's men will head to South
Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select
XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Venues and fixture dates are set to be
announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea
as well as those wishing to travel to support us.
This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with
four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup
Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.
The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI
will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near
Seoul.
United's pre-season itinerary is shaping up as follows:

We asked you to
predict Newcastle's finishing place in the Premier League which
didn't prevent several readers from submitting score predictions - all of
which were wrong...
The overwhelming majority of
entrants went with a fourth place finish, only a handful correctly
predicting fifth spot.

Following his well-received memoirs, "The Boy on the Shed"

Champions League).
Champions League
2025/26:
NUFC are one of 36 clubs qualifying for the League stage.
All 36 clubs play 8 matches against different opponents in a single
league. For the purpose of the draw the clubs are divided into 4 pots. The
CL title-holder is placed in pot 1.
The remaining places of pot 1 and the other pots are filled according to the
club ranking. Each club will be drawn against two opponents from each of the
4 pots, playing one match at home and one match away against them.
Clubs from the same country will not be drawn against each other in the
league phase and each team plays at most against a maximum of two opponents
from any other country (providing a deadlock in the draw can be avoided).
The top 8 clubs of the league stage qualify directly for the round of 16,
while the clubs at rank 9 to 24 go to the play-off round of the knockout
stage. The clubs that finish at rank 25 to 36 are eliminated. In the
knockout stage there is no country protection.

Dan deal done
Newcastle
United have confirmed a one year contract extension for Dan Burn, keeping
the England international defender at Gallowgate until 2027.
Burn, who turned 33 earlier this month, has made 148 appearances in all
competitions since completing a £13m switch from Brighton and Hove Albion
in January 2022.
Sky Sports report that provision for an additional 12 month deal
exists in Burn's revised contract.

A 2-1 win over Sheffield
United at Wembley on Saturday confirmed that the mackems will return to the
Premier League next season for the first time since 2016/17.
The red and whites will join Burnley and Leeds United in the top flight,
with Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City returning to the
Championship.
That all means that Newcastle's PL mileage in 2025/26 will drop by a
whopping 1,300 miles from 9,462 to 8,162.

Born Or Died:
1926 William Isaiah
Foulkes born,
Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. (1951-54)

Forward who arrived from Chester City at a cost of £11,500 in
October 1951 and made his debut in a 4-2 win at Huddersfield Town.
Previously on amateur forms with Cardiff City, Bill won his first Welsh cap
just days after moving to United and scored with his first touch in a 1-1 draw
with England.
The scorer of United's opener in the 4-2 Third Round win against Aston Villa,
Bill played in every round of the competition in 1951/52 including the final
victory.
Moving to Southampton during 1954 in a joint deal with Tom Mulgrew, Bill later returned to Winsford United and Chester
City, ending his career at Hyde United.
Living in Chester, he passed away in 1979.
1976 Claudio Roberto da Silva (aka Cacapa) born, Lavras,
Brazil.
(2007-09)
The arrival of Sam Allardyce as Newcastle manager in the
summer of 2007 saw an overhaul of the club's defence, with over £13m spent on
David Rozehnal, Jose Enrique, Abdoulaye Faye and Habib Beye.
Also arriving was former Brazilian international central defender Cacapa, who
joined on a Bosman free following the expiration of his contract with Lyon.
Beginning his professional career in Brazil with Atletico Mineiro, he won the
first of four international caps before making the switch to OL in 2001.
Five domestic title successes in as many seasons followed, during which time
Claudio also acquired French citizenship.
His competitive debut came in the final seconds of a 0-0 home draw with Aston Villa,
becoming the third
Brazilian to play for United, after Mirandinha and Fumaca.
Paired with Faye, Rozehnal or Steven Taylor, Cacapa made 22 appearances that season
netting twice - both headers from corners at SJP - against Spurs and Stoke City,
the latter in the FA Cup.
That second goal came on the night that Kevin Keegan returned, but he lost his
place within weeks and didn't feature again until the season closer at
Everton.
Claudio will be remembered for a frail display in a 1-4 home rout by Pompey in
November 2007, substituted after just 18 minutes with his side already
trailing 1-3.
Featuring sporadically the following season under Chris Hughton and JFK,
Cacapa's final outing was a substitute appearance against Stoke in
December 2008.
Never selected for any squads by Alan Shearer, Claudio's last appearance at
SJP came for the reserves against Manchester United during March 2009.
Unsurprisingly Newcastle failed to exercise the one year option on his deal
and he departed in that summer, returning to his native Brazil and joining
Cruzeiro.
Cacapa made a comeback with French side Evian, helping them to promotion
in 2011 before returning to Brazil with Avai.
Following their relegation though he retired from playing and coached the
Brazilian U15 National Team between 2013 and 2015.
Claudio then returned to Lyon in 2015 as assistant coach to Bruno Genesio. He
also founded his own soccer school (ALCCA) in Sao Joao del Rey with fellow
Brazilian defender Andre Luiz.
Remaining with Lyon after the arrival of Rudi Garcia in 2019, Cacapa's future
was in doubt two years later after Garcia's exit but he remained as a coach
and spoke to Bruno Guimaraes ahead of the midfielder's move from Lyon to
Tyneside.
2003 Jude Smith born, Coatbridge, Scotland. (2022-24)

Newcastle added goalkeeper Jude to their
development squad ahead of the 2022/23 season, the 19 year-old having made 30 senior appearances
East Fife.
United paid an undisclosed fee following a successful trial for
the player on Celtic's books before joining the Fifers in 2021.
Signing a two year deal, Smith found himself training with the senior squad
before debuting for the U21s in a 2-4 PL loss away to Norwich in August 2022.
A maiden call-up to Scotland's U21s that November then led to a first cap in a
1-2 loss to Iceland at Motherwell's Fir Park.
Featuring regularly for the reserves, a
broken wrist sustained in early 2023 ended Jude's first season on Tyneside.
Belatedly returning to action the following season, Smith made just ten league
and cup starts and announced that he'd been released by United in May 2024.
Next came a move to Carlisle United, but although failing to make a
competitive senior appearance, Jude remained at Brunton Park after the
Cumbrians were relegated to the National League in May 2025.

1965 Over a month after they had been
crowned as Second Division champions, Newcastle belatedly
took possession of the trophy in slightly bizarre
circumstances.
A 0-0 home draw with Manchester City in their final game
on a Saturday afternoon put United two points clear of
second placed Northampton Town and with a vastly (+20)
superior goal difference over the Cobblers.
However no trophy presentation could be made as Town's
final game was an evening kick-off at Portsmouth later the
same day.
That ended 1-1 and gave Newcastle the title - but not the
silverware, which was finally handed over at the Football
League AGM in London to chairman Lord Westwood, manager
Joe Harvey and captain Stan Anderson.
The trio then returned to Newcastle by rail.

59,234
Eight days after winning a stormy semi-final against
Rangers, United were back at SJP to face the highly-rated
Magyars in the first leg of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup
Final.
After a tight first half, United skipper Bob Moncur chose
his 143rd game for United to grab his first senior goal,
pouncing to net after Wyn Davies saw his shot rebound
after latching on to Tommy Gibb's free kick.
Within minutes Moncur had done it again, the right-footer
shooting past visiting goalkeeper Antal Szentimihalyi
after playing a neat two with Benny Arentoft. Like his
first, it also came courtesy of his left foot.
The United captain also got another shot on target that
night, inadvertantly fracturing the cheekbone of Wyn
Davies - who played on.
Jim Scott then grabbed a third goal at the Gallowgate End
after another Arentoft assist, to give the Magpies a
healthy advantage going in to the second leg in Budapest.
