Update:
CEO: new name linked
Following confirmation that current Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales is to
stand down this month on medical grounds, speculation over his successor has
intensified.
Links with Collette Roche - formerly of Manchester United - were followed by
mentions of Donna-Maria Cullen after news of her departure from Spurs was
confirmed, before more substantial claims of a different candidate emerged.
According to the Mail that is David Hopkinson, who they reported on
Monday had been interviewed by the Magpies regarding the soon-to-be-vacant
role at Gallowgate.
The 54 year-old Canadian had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square
Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real
Madrid between 2018 and 2020.
Hopkinson also had an earlier involvement with sports
teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

Born to run
Mark Allison aka Run
Geordie Run has now reached Illinois, the seventh different
state that he's run through on his 3,200 mile charity route from New York to California.
Mark is raising funds for St.Benedicts Hospice and his total for this
challenge stands at £18K. That means over £360K has gone to worthy causes
as a result of his charity efforts - a decent chunk coming from NUFC.com
readers.

Comings & goings
Former Newcastle defender Jean-Alain
Boumsong has returned to one of his former clubs, rejoining Auxerre as
defensive coach.
Now 45, the former French international centre half played for the Ligue 1
side between 2000 and 2004, ending up on Tyneside a year later following a
stint at Rangers.
Fellow SJP old boy Steven Taylor meanwhile has guided UAE side Al-Qaliba
to promotion in their maiden season - a goal from a certain Papiss Cisse earning
a 1-1 draw and a place in next season's Second Division.
Ex-Magpies leaving

Paul Dummett Carlisle United
Fraser Forster Spurs
Dwight

Jeff Hendrick Derby County
Tim Krul Luton Town
Oisin McEntee Walsall
James Milner Brighton & Hove Albion

Jonjo Shelvey Burnley

Update:
Howe award confirmed
Wednesday
saw City councillors approve the motion awarding Eddie Howe the
Honorary Freedom of the City of Newcastle, in recognition of winning the
Carabao Cup.
Howe is the latest Magpie-related addition to the list of those afforded
this honour, which now consists of:
2025 Eddie Howe
2022 Shaka Hislop
2017 Freddy Shepherd (Chairman)
2017 Bruce Shepherd (Director)
2005 Bobby Robson
2000 Alan Shearer
1993 NUFC*
1980 Jackie Milburn
1966 William McKeag (Chairman)
1909 William Sanderson (Director)
* the club itself was collectively honoured, "in recognition of over
100 years' sporting achievement in the Football League and FA Cup and
European competitions and of the Club's contribution to the reputation of
the City and its place in the hearts of Geordies everywhere."
PS: It was Dan Burn's turn on Friday, receiving the Freedom of
Northumberland in a ceremony at County Hall in Morpeth.
That gives the England international defender access to benefits including a
guaranteed parking space in Bamburgh, sea coal collection rights at
Lynemouth and queue jumper status at Delaval Ices. Allegedly.
Update:
Mitchell bombshell
From NUFC, Tuesday:
Paul Mitchell, Newcastle United’s Sporting Director, will leave the
club by mutual consent at the end of June 2025.
Paul joined the club in July 2024,
reuniting him with Magpies CEO Darren Eales, who had previously recruited
Paul to Tottenham Hotspur in 2014.
Due to health reasons, Darren will be
stepping down as CEO in the near future.
During Paul’s tenure as Sporting
Director, the club won its first major domestic trophy in 70 years by
lifting the Carabao Cup in March 2025 and has secured Champions League
football for the 2025/26 campaign.
Paul Mitchell said: "I'd like to
thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year,
including Eddie Howe, Becky Langley, the players, staff, owners and fans. It
has been an honour to be part of the club and to work with some incredible
people.
"I'm leaving at a time that is
right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales - someone who I
have worked so closely with in my career - moving on soon.
"The club is in great hands on and
off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building.
"I'd like to wish everyone
connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future."
Paul leaves with the club’s best
wishes and the Board would like to express its sincere thanks to him for his
professionalism and diligent service.
This unexpected development looks to have caught the media on the hop,
following reports that Eddie Howe was meeting Mitchell to discuss transfers
on Sunday night. Both men had earlier featured in the post-game
celebrations.
There seemed to be an assumption that the pair had developed a working
relationship since an apparent power struggle following Mitchell's
installation last July. That version of events now seems flawed.
Mitchell departs having failed to oversee any meaningful acquisitions since
belatedly succeeding Dan Ashworth and speculation over the next Sporting
Director has already included current Head of recruitment Steve Nickson.
The 60 year-old who has been at United for over a decade was linked with the
post following Ashworth's departure, but remained at SJP to work under
Mitchell in a diluted role. Messrs Tonali, Isak, Gordon, Joelinton, Bruno
and Botman were all recruited under his guidance.
Andy Howe remains in post at United as assistant head of first team
recruitment, assuming that role in February 2024 after two years in a
scouting position. He's Eddie's nephew.
There's no confirmation as yet whether club Performance Director James Bunce
will remain in post, having previously worked alongside Mitchell at
Southampton and Monaco.
2025/26:
Korea opportunities

From NUFC, Tuesday:
Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the
club's history this summer.
Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will
take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest
summer sporting events.
Eddie Howe's men will head to South
Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select
XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Venues and fixture dates are set to be
announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea
as well as those wishing to travel to support us.
This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with
four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup
Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.
The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI
will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near
Seoul.

(UEFA have agreed an away ticket price cap of €50 for the 2025/26

Champions League
2025/26:
NUFC are one of 36 clubs qualifying for the League stage.
All 36 clubs play 8 matches against different opponents in a single
league. For the purpose of the draw the clubs are divided into 4 pots. The
CL title-holder is placed in pot 1.
The remaining places of pot 1 and the other pots are filled according to the
club ranking. Each club will be drawn against two opponents from each of the
4 pots, playing one match at home and one match away against them.
Clubs from the same country will not be drawn against each other in the
league phase and each team plays at most against a maximum of two opponents
from any other country (providing a deadlock in the draw can be avoided).
The top 8 clubs of the league stage qualify directly for the round of 16,
while the clubs at rank 9 to 24 go to the play-off round of the knockout
stage. The clubs that finish at rank 25 to 36 are eliminated. In the
knockout stage there is no country protection.

Loan lads
Miodrag Pivas
(Willem II):
A 1-3 loss at home to Telstar on Sunday meant that Willem II were
beaten 3-5 in their relegation playoff on aggregate and will be
playing in the Eerste Divisie next season.
Miodrag remained on the bench, meaning that his time in Holland ends with
five league substitute outings totalling 30 minutes and two cup
starts.
Vakhtang Salia
(Dinamo Tblisi):
A 1-2 defeat at second-placed Dila on Wednesday saw Dinamo drop one place to
fourth in the Erovnuli Liga - missing out on a European place by a single
point.
Vakhtang wasn't in the squad as the Georgian League pauses at the halfway
point before resuming in August.
Salia's transfer to Newcastle will be activated when he turns 18 on August
30th. It's unclear whether he'll play competitively for Dinamo again ahead
of that date.

Born Or Died:
1908 Hugh Bulloch born, Larkhall, Scotland. (1935-36)

Centre-half
Hugh was playing in
Ireland for Portadown when United paid out £1,325 to sign him in November
1935, as backup for Tony Leach and Dave Davidson.
Making his debut in a 5-1 home win over Nottingham Forest soon after arriving,
Hugh played four more games but struggled with various injuries and was
released early the following season without playing again.
Joining Third Division North side New Brighton on a free transfer, Bulloch
later returned to Portadown as player-manager, before a further stint with New
Brighton.
Appearing for Portadown between 1939 and 1941, he served as both trainer and
groundsman from 1947, taking over as manager from 1949 until 1950 when he
resigned.

1957 Mark
Lawrenson born, Preston.
(1996-97)

Former
Preston, Brighton, Liverpool and Republic of Ireland defender who joined
United's coaching staff in October 1996.
His brief was to tutor our players in the mysteries of defence, although Lawro
claimed never to have taken a first team training session until after KK's
departure.
Lawrenson remained to work for a time under his former Anfield team mate Kenny
Dalglish, but after less than a year at Gallowgate returned to media punditry.
Since then he seems to have harboured something of a grudge against the
Magpies - although he was slightly more supportive when BBC couch partner Alan
Shearer took over at SJP in April 2009.
Perhaps Lawro found echoes of his own personal situation when (briefly) Oxford
United boss - trying to satisfy the demands of a non-footballing owner (Mr
R.Maxwell)...
If nothing else though, Mark's time in Toon saw him gain an unrivalled
knowledge of Tyneside nightspots....
1958 Steve
Doyle born, Neath.
(1982)

Midfielder
who joined United on trial in the summer of 1982 at the same time as John
Anderson, having both exited Preston North End at the end of the previous
season.
Featuring in a trio of friendlies in Scotland, Doyle also appeared for
United as they played in Madeira - but while Ando won a deal, Arthur Cox chose
to release him.
Signing for Huddersfield Town, Welsh U21 international Doyle also played
for the mackems, Hull City and Rochdale.
He later played for non-league Chorley and took over as manager at Victory
Park for a
short spell during
1997.
1960 Death of George Wilson, 75.

Aidan McCaffery had an effort ruled out for handball
before Ray Xuereb levelled to cap an impressive display
that caused Newcastle manager Richard Dinnis to invite the
player to SJP for a trial.
Team:
Hardwick, D.Craig, Kennedy, Nulty, Bird, McCaffery,
Barrowclough, Cannell, Burns, Gowling, T.Craig.
1996
Future Magpie Shay Given won his fourth cap for the
Republic of Ireland, as they were held 2-2 in Dublin by
Croatia.
Also appearing for the home side was former Newcastle
favourite Liam O'Brien, at that time a Tranmere Rovers
player.
1997 Lee Clark
joined the unmentionables at a cost of £2.5m and his
soul, becoming their record transfer at the time.
1999 Referee Graham Poll revealed that he had been
verbally abused by Newcastle fans when attending the FA
Cup Final, saying:
"I
can only assume that before the match they remembered that
I had taken charge of four Newcastle defeats over the past
season and apportioned some blame to me.
"Following
the match I was threatened and severely abused verbally
which left me feeling unsure as to my safety."
2001 Shay Given was in World Cup Qualifying
action as Portugal forced a 1-1 draw at Lansdowne Road,
thanks to a Luis Figo goal.
2002 England were
held 1-1 in their opening World Cup Final game against
Sweden in the Japanese city of Saitama.
Kieron Dyer appeared from the bench for the final 27
minutes in place of David Beckham.
2003 Nobby Solano
was linked with a £3.5m move to Celtic. The Peruvian's
absences due to international commitments had reportedly
frustrated Bobby Robson.
2006 Michael
Chopra was on the verge of a move to Cardiff City after
turning down Newcastle's one year contract offer.
Meanwhile, Livingston confirmed the free transfer signing
of reserve midfielder Daryl Smylie.
2009 media speculation linked Sultan
Qaboos bin Said of Oman with a bid for United, just hours
after owner Mike Ashley admitted that the "for
sale" signs were back up at SJP.
However, the Monarch of the oil-rich Gulf state since 1970
failed to emerge as a serious bidder and the story soon
faded.
2010
Striker Andy Carroll was back in court for a plea and case
management hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.
Carroll was landed with an assault charge the previous
February, following an investigation into an incident in a
Tyneside night club in December.
A "not guilty" plea was entered by Carroll and
his trial was scheduled for October 2010.
2012 Two
Magpies were in competitive action, as a clutch of African
nations were on World Cup qualifying duty.
Papiss Cisse retained the captain's armband after leading
Senegal for the first time a week earlier, as they faced
Liberia in Dakar.
Cisse missed a first half penalty but his side ran out 3-1
winners against ten men - with our man not on the
scoresheet.
In Abidjan meanwhile, there was a 29th senior cap for
Cheick Tiote as Ivory Coast beat Tanzania 2-0.
2018
Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin finished on the losing
side as the USA surrendered a one goal lead to be beaten
1-2 by Ireland in a kickabout staged in Dublin.
2022 Among the recipients of honours in the Queen's
Platinum Jubilee list was Liverpool's former Magpie, James
Milner.

2023 Reports in Denmark linked Newcastle with 18

A fee of around £6m was speculated upon for the Gambian
international.
