Toon Tone confirmed

Newcastle announced on Thursday that they had reached agreement to sign Spaniard Antonio Cordero when his contract with Spanish side Malaga expires on July 1st.

The 18 year-old right-footed winger made the first of 60 senior appearances for his previous side in September 2023, ending last season with six goals from 39 games as Malaga narrowly avoided relegation from the second tier.

Travelling to Tyneside in recent days to complete the formalities of his transfer, Cordero is now preparing to feature at the U19 European Championship finals.

Defending champions Spain are paired in Group A with Denmark, Romania and Montenegro in the eight team tournament staged in Romania.

Quotes from outgoing Sporting Director Paul Mitchell that Cordero was sought by other clubs in Spain and across Europe back up media claims of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Ajax and Spurs.

A five year contract is claimed in the Spanish press for the player known as Antonito, United confirming that they plan to loan him out next season.

Ajax have been mooted as one possible destination; United successfully placing Yankuba Minteh with Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord following his arrival in July 2023.

Update:
The Spanish
acquisition(s)

Confirmation of Cordero's capture comes 11 years to the day that United unveiled Ayoze Perez at SJP, following his purchase from Spanish second tier side Tenerife.

The 20 year-old forward reportedly rejected offers from both Barcelona and Real Madrid and was immediately integrated with United's first team squad.

Newcastle's next two attempts at bringing Spanish-born prospects to Tyneside proved less successful however, starting with Jesus Nunez Cumbreras in late 2016.

The 17 year-old forward known as Juanito initially came on trial from Spanish Third Division side Recreativo De Huelva but hadn't made a competitive reserve debut when loaned to Deportivo La Coruna in January 2018.

That failed to give him any significant pitch time and Juanito remained a peripheral figure for Newcastle's U23 side the following season before exiting in 2019.

Subsequently playing for several minor league sides in Spain, we lost track of him back in 2023.

Faring slightly better in black and white was winger Victor Fernandez, arriving as an 18 year-old from Cornella on a long-term contract in February 2017.

Some decent displays for the club's U23 side saw him earn a senior call-up for a kickabout against Royal Antwerp staged in Spain during March 2018.

However a hip injury then affected his progress at United and he was eventually released in 2020, playing for clubs in Romania, Greece and Cyprus as well as Cornella again.

Aside from their country of birth, our Spanish quartet all have the common trait of becoming Magpies whilst Steve Nickson was in either a scouting or recruitment role.

2025/26:
Moving on up

The 2025/26 season Magpie Mover is now on sale via NUFC, with the price fixed at £25 (no concessions).

The ticket covers competitive men's first team games at SJP, allowing one direct return trip via specified public transport within Tyne and wear up to three hours before kick-off to the end of daily service post-match.

NUFC's launch announcement reveals that Magpie Movers now come as a digital mobile download, although lacking the capability to open ticket barriers. There's no mention of continued availability in an alternative card format.

For the first time, Magpie Movers can be purchased by Mags+ members in addition to season ticket holders.

2025/26:
£30's still plenty

Tuesday saw the Premier League confirm that the £30 adult away ticket price cap will continue into the 2025/26 season - the tenth successive season this limit has applied.

UEFA announced last year that away ticket prices for 2025/26 Champions League games would be pegged at €50.

2025/26:
Sela Cup (h) update

Spanish side Atletico Madrid are confirmed as United's pre-season friendly opponents at SJP, contesting the Sela Cup over a single match as was the case in 2024.

Finishing third in La Liga last season, Diego Simeone's side visit Gallowgate on Saturday August 9th with a 4pm start, following a game between the respective women's teams that will kick off there at 1pm.

Tickets are on sale now to season ticket holders and members, with public sale from 10am this Friday.

Tickets will include access to both games and are £25 for standard areas and £30 for others.

PS: Newcastle lost 1-4 to Atletico in Madrid during a post-season tour of Spain and Germany back in 1956.

2025/26
:
Celtic (a) update

Tickets for Newcastle's visit to Parkhead next month are now on public sale to home fans, Celtic season ticket holders having largely voted with their feet during the dedicated sales period for them that ended on Monday.

That apathetic response has been explained by Celtic's decision to charge season ticket holders to attend, having previously included a friendly game in their renewals.

United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - almost 40,000 less than were present for our 1999 game.

Initially at least, only the areas opened up to home season ticket holders appear on the seating plan for public sale - the Main Stand and lower tier of opposite North Stand.

The Magpies were allocated and sold 7,200 tickets.

Update:
CEO: new name linked

Following confirmation that current Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales is to stand down this month on medical grounds, speculation over his successor has intensified.

Links with Collette Roche - formerly of Manchester United - were followed by mentions of Donna-Maria Cullen after news of her departure from Spurs was confirmed, before more substantial claims of a different candidate emerged.

According to the Mail that is David Hopkinson, who they reported on Monday had been interviewed by the Magpies regarding the soon-to-be-vacant role at Gallowgate.

The 54 year-old Canadian had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real Madrid between 2018 and 2020.

Hopkinson also had an earlier involvement with sports teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

2025/26:
Korea opportunities

From NUFC:

Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the club's history this summer.

Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest summer sporting events.

Eddie Howe's men will head to South Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Venues and fixture dates are set to be announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea as well as those wishing to travel to support us.

This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.

The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near Seoul.

2025/26
:
Champions League dates

Next season's CL timetable is as follows:

Champions League 2025/26:

NUFC are one of 36 clubs qualifying for the League stage.

All 36 clubs play 8 matches against different opponents in a single league. For the purpose of the draw the clubs are divided into 4 pots. The CL title-holder is placed in pot 1.

The remaining places of pot 1 and the other pots are filled according to the club ranking. Each club will be drawn against two opponents from each of the 4 pots, playing one match at home and one match away against them.

Clubs from the same country will not be drawn against each other in the league phase and each team plays at most against a maximum of two opponents from any other country (providing a deadlock in the draw can be avoided).

The top 8 clubs of the league stage qualify directly for the round of 16, while the clubs at rank 9 to 24 go to the play-off round of the knockout stage. The clubs that finish at rank 25 to 36 are eliminated. In the knockout stage there is no country protection.

On This Day in History
5th June

Born Or Died:

2001 Ryan Barrett born, Wrexham, Wales (2017-22)

The son of former Magpie reserve midfielder Paul, Ryan was born while his father was playing for Wrexham - benefiting from that by representing Wales at youth level.

With United's Academy from the age of 12, the right back made his U18 bow in a 0-7 loss at Everton in March 2018 - enjoying a rather happier home debut soon after with a 3-1 win against Liverpool.

Graduating to the U23s for a 4-2 home victory over West Bromwich Albion in early 2019, injury sidelined Ryan for much of the following COVID-truncated season.

Agreeing a contract extension in July 2020, Barrett was a regular starter for the club's U23 side during the following campaign.

However, he was selected less during the following season and exited from SJP in June 2022.

Next was a short-term deal at Scottish Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Ryan playing three game before signing for Blyth Spartans in early 2023.

However, that was also short-lived and his next port of call was Cornish non-league side Mousehole.

2017 Death of Cheick Tiote 30. (2010-17)

Cheick collapsed during training with Chinese club Beijing Enterprises following a suspected cardiac arrest.

The Ivorian midfielder had left United just four months earlier - his final appearance in our colours coming during January 2017.

United's four match post-season tour of Germany ended with a Sunday game against the German FA Cup holders, who were better known as Karlsruhe.

1974 Striker Malcolm Macdonald was hoping for better things as the Joe Mercer era came to an end and his final England team drew 2-2 with Yugoslavia in Belgrade.

Kevin Keegan and Mick Channon scored the goals, while Supermac appeared as a sub.

1985 Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band played the second of their two nights at SJP, as part of the "Born in the USA" tour.

1995
Warren Barton joined United from Wimbledon in a £4m move - a British record fee for a defender at the time

1998 Germany warmed up for the World Cup Finals with a 7-0 friendly victory over Luxembourg in Mannheim.

The home midfield included Dietmar Hamann, who was to join Newcastle from Bayern Munich within weeks.

1999 United's Gary Speed appeared for the Welsh as they lost 0-4 to Italy in a European Championship qualifier staged in Bologna.

1999 A training ground mishap left Shay Given with knee ligament damage ahead of Ireland's European Championship home qualifier against Macedonia.

He was to be absent from the Newcastle side until October of that year, with Steve Harper, Tommy Wright and Jon Karelse all deputising.

2002 Game Two of Ireland's World Cup Final campaign saw a fighting 1-1 draw with Germany in the Kashami Stadium, Ibraki.

An on-form Shay Given was between the posts while former and future Magpies faced each other in the midfield, in the shape of Dietmar Hamann & Damien Duff.

2003 While United's pursuit of Feyenoord's Brett Emerton continued, Nicos Dabizas, Clarence Acuna, Robbie Elliott, Jamie McClen and Wayne Quinn were all put up for sale.

2004 Cap number 22 for Newcastle's Kieron Dyer as he appeared for the second half of England's crushing 6-1 victory in what nobody was calling the Cod War derby against Iceland, at the City of Manchester Stadium

Clad in their new red and white kit, Sven's men were 3-1 up at the interval thanks to a goal from Lampard and a Rooney double.

And second half goals from Darius Vassell (two) and Wayne Bridge completed an emphatic success over Iceland, for whom former Toon junior Bjarni Gudjonsson was a 68th minute substitute.

2004 United midfielder Hugo Viana was a second half substitute for Portugal U21s in their European Championship semi final tie.

However they lost 1-3 to the eventual tournament winners Italy in the German city of Bochum.

2004 A 1-0 friendly win for Ireland in the Amsterdam ArenA, Magpies duo Andy O'Brien and Shay Given stonewalling a Dutch side featuring future Magpie Patrick Kluivert.

2007 Toon pair Steven Taylor and James Milner lined up at Carrow Road for England's U21s against Slovakia ahead of the European Championship finals.

Milner provided the cross from which England went ahead from the penalty spot before being subbed at the interval.

Taylor played the full game, marking his 15th appearance at this level with his fourth goal, connecting with a cross from future Magpie Wayne Routledge to put England three up.

Despite the convincing victory the game ended with a pre-arranged penalty shootout to give England some practice ahead of possible spot kick tests in the Netherlands: neither Toon man took part.

2009 "Make or break" talks over the identity of Newcastle United's next manager ended with no word from either the Alan Shearer or Mike Ashley camps. And with United also up for sale, the club were left severely in limbo.

2014
Striker Ayoze Perez became United's first permanent signing since January 2013, joining from Tenerife for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £1m.

2019
Much cyber excitement came with the appearance of a newly-registered company at Companies House - fuelling speculation that it was related to a rumoured NUFC takeover.

Monochrome Acquisition Limited was registered via London-based law firm Pinsent Masons LLP who operate in the area of sports finance with two officers listed - the man behind a claimed bid for NUFC and the other his lawyer; Khaled Zayed Saquer Zayed Alnahyan and Sheikh Midhat Kamil Kidwai.

2022 Newcastle's Santiago Munoz netted from the penalty spot for Mexico U21s, as they defeated Indonesia 2-0 in the Tournoi Maurice Revello staged in France.

2024 Newcastle duo Alexander Isak and Emil Krafth were in the Swedish side that lost 1-2 to Denmark in a friendly.

Isak scored once but couldn't prevent an unhappy return to his home city of Copenhagen for Swedish coach (and former Magpie) Jon Dahl Tomasson.
