Callum comeback
still a possibility

Friday saw Newcastle confirm their retained and released player lists, Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly the only two confirmed departures - the former becoming a free agent and the latter completing a permanent move to Juventus.

Callum Wilson and John Ruddy remain under contract at Gallowgate until the end of June, United revealing that they "have opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed."

Following announcements regarding contract extensions for Dan Burn, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar, the club confirm that an option has been exercised for back-up goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to remain at SJP for a further 12 months.

Six members of the club's Development squad are also exiting: midfield pair Ellis Stanton and James Huntley, attacking duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Josh Donaldson and the Powell twins Harry and Rory - both defenders.

PS: The lack of any updates concerning goalkeeper Max Thompson and midfielder Joe White looks to confirm that both have contracts running beyond 2025 - something previously undisclosed anywhere we've noticed.

Oliver's (Toon) Army

The Mail report that Newcastle are set to complete a deal for Rangers left back Oliver Goodbrand, with the 16 year-old heading to Tyneside soon for his medical.

The Scottish U16 international debuted for the Rangers B team in a Glasgow Cup game aged 15 and as an academy scholar would be available upon payment of compensation.

PS: reports north of the border have also credited United with interest in a second Ibrox starlet, in the shape of winger Alfie Hutchinson.

The 16 year-old joined Rangers from Hearts in 2024 and like Goodbrand, has played at B team level in the Glasgow Cup.

Toon Tone confirmed

Newcastle announced on Thursday that they had reached agreement to sign Spaniard Antonio Cordero when his contract with Spanish side Malaga expires on July 1st.

The 18 year-old right-footed winger made the first of 60 senior appearances for his previous side in September 2023, ending last season with six goals from 39 games as Malaga narrowly avoided relegation from the second tier.

Travelling to Tyneside in recent days to complete the formalities of his transfer, Cordero is now preparing to feature at the U19 European Championship finals.

Defending champions Spain are paired in Group A with Denmark, Romania and Montenegro in the eight team tournament staged in Romania.

Quotes from outgoing Sporting Director Paul Mitchell that Cordero was sought by other clubs in Spain and across Europe back up media claims of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Ajax and Spurs.

A five year contract is claimed in the Spanish press for the player known as Antonito, United confirming that they plan to loan him out next season.

Ajax have been mooted as one possible destination; United successfully placing Yankuba Minteh with Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord following his arrival in July 2023.

Update:
The Spanish
acquisition(s)

Confirmation of Cordero's capture comes 11 years to the day that United unveiled Ayoze Perez at SJP, following his purchase from Spanish second tier side Tenerife.

The 20 year-old forward reportedly rejected offers from both Barcelona and Real Madrid and was immediately integrated with United's first team squad.

Newcastle's next two attempts at bringing Spanish-born prospects to Tyneside proved less successful however, starting with Jesus Nunez Cumbreras in late 2016.

The 17 year-old forward known as Juanito initially came on trial from Spanish Third Division side Recreativo De Huelva but hadn't made a competitive reserve debut when loaned to Deportivo La Coruna in January 2018.

That failed to give him any significant pitch time and Juanito remained a peripheral figure for Newcastle's U23 side the following season before exiting in 2019.

Subsequently playing for several minor league sides in Spain, we lost track of him back in 2023.

Faring slightly better in black and white was winger Victor Fernandez, arriving as an 18 year-old from Cornella on a long-term contract in February 2017.

Some decent displays for the club's U23 side saw him earn a senior call-up for a kickabout against Royal Antwerp staged in Spain during March 2018.

However a hip injury then affected his progress at United and he was eventually released in 2020, playing for clubs in Romania, Greece and Cyprus as well as Cornella again.

Aside from their country of birth, our Spanish quartet all have the common trait of becoming Magpies whilst Steve Nickson was in either a scouting or recruitment role.

2025/26:
Moving on up

The 2025/26 season Magpie Mover is now on sale via NUFC, with the price fixed at £25 (no concessions).

The ticket covers competitive men's first team games at SJP, allowing one direct return trip via specified public transport within Tyne and wear up to three hours before kick-off to the end of daily service post-match.

NUFC's launch announcement reveals that Magpie Movers now come as a digital mobile download, although lacking the capability to open ticket barriers. There's no mention of continued availability in an alternative card format.

For the first time, Magpie Movers can be purchased by Mags+ members in addition to season ticket holders.

2025/26:
£30's still plenty

Tuesday saw the Premier League confirm that the £30 adult away ticket price cap will continue into the 2025/26 season - the tenth successive season this limit has applied.

UEFA announced last year that away ticket prices for 2025/26 Champions League games would be pegged at €50.

2025/26:
Sela Cup (h) update

Spanish side Atletico Madrid are confirmed as United's pre-season friendly opponents at SJP, contesting the Sela Cup over a single match as was the case in 2024.

Finishing third in La Liga last season, Diego Simeone's side visit Gallowgate on Saturday August 9th with a 4pm start, following a game between the respective women's teams that will kick off there at 1pm.

Tickets are now on public sale and cover both games. Prices are £25 for standard areas and £30 for others.

PS: Newcastle lost 1-4 to Atletico in Madrid during a post-season tour of Spain and Germany back in 1956.

2025/26
:
Celtic (a) update

Tickets for Newcastle's visit to Parkhead next month are now on public sale to home fans, Celtic season ticket holders having largely voted with their feet during the dedicated sales period for them.

That apathetic response has been explained by Celtic's decision to charge season ticket holders to attend, having previously included a friendly game in their renewals.

United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - almost 40,000 less than were present for our 1999 game.

Initially at least, only the areas opened up to home season ticket holders appear on the seating plan for public sale - the Main Stand and lower tier of opposite North Stand.

The Magpies were allocated and sold 7,200 tickets.

Update:
CEO: new name linked

Following confirmation that current Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales is to stand down this month on medical grounds, speculation over his successor has intensified.

Links with Collette Roche - formerly of Manchester United - were followed by mentions of Donna-Maria Cullen after news of her departure from Spurs was confirmed, before more substantial claims of a different candidate emerged.

According to the Mail that is David Hopkinson, who they reported on Monday had been interviewed by the Magpies regarding the soon-to-be-vacant role at Gallowgate.

The 54 year-old Canadian had been in charge of the US-based Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation and was Global Head of Partnerships for Real Madrid between 2018 and 2020.

Hopkinson also had an earlier involvement with sports teams in Toronto, which included MLS side Toronto FC.

Update:

2025/26:
Korea opportunities

From NUFC:

Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the club's history this summer.

Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest summer sporting events.

Eddie Howe's men will head to South Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Venues and fixture dates are set to be announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea as well as those wishing to travel to support us.

This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.

The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near Seoul.

On This Day in History
7th June

Born Or Died:

1885 John McTavish born, Govan, Scotland. (1912-13)

Scottish international inside right who had appeared for Falkirk, Oldham Athletic and Spurs before moving to SJP in April 1912.

Debuting in a season-closing 1-1 draw at newly-crowned Division One champions Blackburn Rovers, Jock became a regular starter during the following season.

However, United declined from a third place finish to fourteenth and McTavish was one of a number of players to depart at the end of that season, Partick Thistle paying £500 to take him back to Scotland.

Later moves saw Jock feature for York City, Goole Town, East Fife, East Stirlingshire and finally Dumbarton. He died in 1926, just two years after playing his final game.

1908 Mick Burns born, Leeholme, Durham. (1927-36)

Signed from Chilton Colliery Welfare for £100 as a goalkeeper, Mick had once been pushed into the forward line following some inconsistent displays between the posts.

However, by the time he became a Magpie Burns had recovered enough of his skill to complete a century of senior appearances, debuting in a 0-1 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers in October 1927.

Moving on to Preston North End in 1936, Burns was in goal for the Lillywhites at Wembley Stadium the following year as they were beaten 1-3 by the mackems in the FA Cup Final.

joined Ipswich Town two years later and remained with them until 1951 - making his final appearance against Gateshead.

Serving as a Lance Bombardier in the army during WW2, Mick also featured for local rivals Norwich City as a wartime guest.

Later working as a school caretaker in Newcastle, Mick died in September 1982.

1910 William Pearson McPhillips born, Musselburgh, Scotland. (1930-38)

Goalkeeper Bill came to SJP in the summer of 1930 to understudy first-choice custodian Albert McInroy, United paying Musselburgh Bruntonians the princely sum of £30 for him.

Appearing for the club's reserve side, it took until New Years Day 1934 for a senior callup to arrive, after McInroy was unfit to play.

A fairly remarkable 90 minutes against Liverpool at Gallowgate followed: United taking an early lead before McPhillips was beaten on 24 minutes, only for the Magpies to instantly restore their one goal advantage.

Bill was then beaten again - by his own team mate Alec Betton - leaving the interval score at 2-2.

By full time though, McPhillips hadn't conceded again and his colleagues had scored another seven times to win 9-2.

"Scots Wullie" remained at SJP following United's relegation the season, making occasional first time starts until his longest run in the side during April and May 1938.

Released that summer and joining Guildford City, Bill appeared briefly in wartime football for Bradford City and Hartlepool. His death was recorded in 1992.

1988 Wimbledon 'keeper Dave Beasant was persuaded to move to Tyneside, less than a month after a decisive penalty save in the FA Cup Final. At the time, his £850,000 fee was a British record for a goalkeeper.

1995 Les Ferdinand agreed to join United after Queens Park Rangers accepted a slighter lower bid than Aston Villa had made - the striker having refused to sign for the Villans.

1997 England beat Tournoi hosts France 1-0 in Montpellier thanks to Alan Shearer's goal.

The four team event was a dry run for the World Cup held the following summer and also involved Brazil and Italy.

2000 Didier Domi and Gary Speed were both rumoured to be leaving United as Rangers made a last minute bid to secure Toon target Peter Lovenkrands from Akademisk Boldklub in his native Denmark.

2001 United's planned pre-season tour to Hong Kong and China was abandoned after the organisers failed to provide the promised financial guarantees.

2003 Following the SARS virus scare, the FA finally announced that the Asia Cup involving Birmingham City, Chelsea and Newcastle in Malaysia would go ahead as planned.

2007 With Joey Barton's transfer from Manchester City agreed but still not formally concluded, Mark Viduka became Sam Allardyce's first Newcastle signing,

Following the expiration of his Boro contract, free agent Viduka agreed a two-year deal with an option for a further season.

2009
Newspapers linked Alan Shearer to managerial posts at West Bromwich Albion and Southampton, as the deadlock at Newcastle over his permanent appointment continued.

2011 Premier League newcomers Swansea City confirmed that Newcastle had made an undisclosed offer for Welsh international left back Neil Taylor.

2012 Newcastle confirmed that they had agreed a new eight-year contract with chief scout Graham Carr.

2018 Massadio Haidara left SJP to join Racing Club Lens after the expiration of his contract. Also departing as a free agent was fellow full back Jesus Gamez.

2022 Championship side Norwich City struck a loan deal for midfielder Isaac Hayden. The 27 year-old was under contract at SJP until 2026 but had been out of action since December 2021 due to a knee injury.

2022 Newcastle full back Kieran Trippier was in the England side for a 1-1 Nations League draw against Germany in Munich.

Trippier's 36th cap was his first since moving to SJP, becoming the 37th then-current Magpie to play for
England.

2024 The England squad for the Euro 2024 Finals in Germany was confirmed, including Toon duo Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon.
