You got to pump it up....

NUFC.com reader Mark Allison continues his progress across the USA, leaving behind the city of St. Louis on Monday as he embarked on day 40 of his charity trek.

His next target is the Missouri/Kansas state line which lies over 200 miles away. The man also known as Run Geordie Run aims to reach that point by the end of this week but his progress was hampered by a ruined tyre on his RV.

Mark is following a 3,200 mile coast to coast route from New York to Huntington Beach in California and is nearing £20,000 in donations to St.Benedicts Hospice on this latest charity effort. If you can help, please do so online here

Callum comeback
still a possibility

Friday saw Newcastle confirm their retained and released player lists, Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly the only two confirmed departures - the former becoming a free agent and the latter completing a permanent move to Juventus.

Callum Wilson and John Ruddy remain under contract at Gallowgate until the end of June, United revealing that they "have opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed."

Following announcements regarding contract extensions for Dan Burn, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar, the club confirm that an option has been exercised for back-up goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to remain at SJP for a further 12 months.

Six members of the club's Development squad are also exiting: midfield pair Ellis Stanton and James Huntley, attacking duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Josh Donaldson and the Powell twins Harry and Rory - both defenders.

PS: The lack of any updates concerning goalkeeper Max Thompson and midfielder Joe White looks to confirm that both have contracts running beyond 2025 - something previously undisclosed anywhere we've noticed.

Oliver's (Toon) Army

The Mail report that Newcastle are set to complete a deal for Rangers left back Oliver Goodbrand, with the 16 year-old heading to Tyneside soon for his medical.

The Scottish U16 international debuted for the Rangers B team in a Glasgow Cup game aged 15 and as an academy scholar would be available upon payment of compensation.

PS: reports north of the border have also credited United with interest in a second Ibrox starlet, in the shape of winger Alfie Hutchinson.

The 16 year-old joined Rangers from Hearts in 2024 and like Goodbrand, has played at B team level in the Glasgow Cup.

The latest designs from Magpin extend his Carabao Cup winner special editions to include Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton posing with the silverware.

The badges are sold in a double pack, in stock now online here and we had a pair to give away, asking
which drink became the League Cup's very first sponsor in 1982.

It was of course Milk (referenced in a TV advert about Ian Rush and Accrington Stanley) and rising like cream to the top and bagging the badges was Chris Gunning.

Toon Tone confirmed

Newcastle announced on Thursday that they had reached agreement to sign Spaniard Antonio Cordero when his contract with Spanish side Malaga expires on July 1st.

The 18 year-old right-footed winger made the first of 60 senior appearances for his previous side in September 2023, ending last season with six goals from 39 games as Malaga narrowly avoided relegation from the second tier.

Travelling to Tyneside in recent days to complete the formalities of his transfer, Cordero is now preparing to feature at the U19 European Championship finals.

Defending champions Spain are paired in Group A with Denmark, Romania and Montenegro in the eight team tournament staged in Romania.

Quotes from outgoing Sporting Director Paul Mitchell that Cordero was sought by other clubs in Spain and across Europe back up media claims of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Ajax and Spurs.

A five year contract is claimed in the Spanish press for the player known as Antonito, United confirming that they plan to loan him out next season.

Ajax have been mooted as one possible destination; United successfully placing Yankuba Minteh with Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord following his arrival in July 2023.

Update:
The Spanish
acquisition(s)

Confirmation of Cordero's capture comes 11 years to the day that United unveiled Ayoze Perez at SJP, following his purchase from Spanish second tier side Tenerife.

The 20 year-old forward reportedly rejected offers from both Barcelona and Real Madrid and was immediately integrated with United's first team squad.

Newcastle's next two attempts at bringing Spanish-born prospects to Tyneside proved less successful however, starting with Jesus Nunez Cumbreras in late 2016.

The 17 year-old forward known as Juanito initially came on trial from Spanish Third Division side Recreativo De Huelva but hadn't made a competitive reserve debut when loaned to Deportivo La Coruna in January 2018.

That failed to give him any significant pitch time and Juanito remained a peripheral figure for Newcastle's U23 side the following season before exiting in 2019.

Subsequently playing for several minor league sides in Spain, we lost track of him back in 2023.

Faring slightly better in black and white was winger Victor Fernandez, arriving as an 18 year-old from Cornella on a long-term contract in February 2017.

Some decent displays for the club's U23 side saw him earn a senior call-up for a kickabout against Royal Antwerp staged in Spain during March 2018.

However a hip injury then affected his progress at United and he was eventually released in 2020, playing for clubs in Romania, Greece and Cyprus as well as Cornella again.

Aside from their country of birth, our Spanish quartet all have the common trait of becoming Magpies whilst Steve Nickson was in either a scouting or recruitment role.

2025/26:
£30's still plenty

Tuesday saw the Premier League confirm that the £30 adult away ticket price cap will continue into the 2025/26 season - the tenth successive season this limit has applied.

UEFA announced last year that away ticket prices for 2025/26 Champions League games would be pegged at €50.

Sela Cup (h) update

Spanish side Atletico Madrid are confirmed as United's pre-season friendly opponents at SJP, contesting the Sela Cup over a single match as was the case in 2024.

Finishing third in La Liga last season, Diego Simeone's side visit Gallowgate on Saturday August 9th with a 4pm start, following a game between the respective women's teams that will kick off there at 1pm.

Tickets are now on public sale and cover both games. Prices are £25 for standard areas and £30 for others.

PS: Newcastle lost 1-4 to Atletico in Madrid during a post-season tour of Spain and Germany back in 1956.

Celtic (a) update

Tickets for Newcastle's visit to Parkhead next month are now on public sale to home fans, Celtic season ticket holders having largely voted with their feet during the dedicated sales period for them.

That apathetic response has been explained by Celtic's decision to charge season ticket holders to attend, having previously included a friendly game in their renewals.

United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - almost 40,000 less than were present for our 1999 game.

Initially at least, only the areas opened up to home season ticket holders appear on the seating plan for public sale - the Main Stand and lower tier of opposite North Stand.

The Magpies were allocated and sold 7,200 tickets.

2025/26:
Korea opportunities

From NUFC:

Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the club's history this summer.

Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest summer sporting events.

Eddie Howe's men will head to South Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Venues and fixture dates are set to be announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea as well as those wishing to travel to support us.

This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.

The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near Seoul.

On This Day in History
9th June

Born Or Died:

1948 John Bird born, Rossington,  Doncaster. (1975-80)

Central defender who was with local league side Doncaster United when neighbours Rovers - managed by Lawrie McMenemy - came calling in 1967.

Joining Preston North End four years later, Bird's move to Newcastle caused PNE boss Bobby Charlton to resign in disgust, although the part-exchange deal did bring Alex Bruce to Deepdale - a future Lillywhites cult hero.

Debuting in a 0-4 defeat to Manchester City at Maine Road in August 1975, John missed out on the League Cup Final defeat to the Sky Blues the following February.

Injuries and inconsistency saw him in and out of the starting XI for five seasons, before a free transfer took him to Hartlepool United ahead of the 1980/81 campaign.

Bird remained at the Victoria Ground after retiring, serving as both coach and manager, later taking charge at York City and Halifax - with a coaching return to Donny in between.

Exiting from the Shay in 1996, John focused on his painting career and ran a successful art gallery in Bawtry near Doncaster.

His landscape work was commissioned by English Heritage and the National Trust and some
of his work hung at St. James' Park.

1970 Andy Hunt born, Thurrock, Essex.
(1991-93)

Striker who was brought up in Norfolk and began his career with village side Ashill.

Three trial appearances as substitute for Norwich City reserves failed to lead to a contract offer from the Canaries, but Hunt was spotted and signed up by Kings Lynn - keeping his day job as a pensions administrator for Norwich Union.

1990 saw him move up to Conference level when he joined Kettering Town, where his displays attracted the attention of scouts from both Everton and Newcastle.

Magpies boss Jim Smith watched Hunt in a midweek game at Slough before agreeing that he was worth a £150K bid - which was accepted by the Poppies in January 1991.

Introduced initially at reserve level and finding the net against Nottingham Forest's second string, Andy's league debut came from the bench at Watford in March 1991.

His first touch proved to be a memorable one, setting fellow striker Mick Quinn away to score the winner in a 2-1 success.

Hunt's first senior strike came in a 2-2 home draw with Oxford United a month later, by which time he had a new manager - World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles.

The following season saw Andy get a run in the side and shoulder the scoring burden after a serious injury to Mick Quinn.

Kevin Keegan's arrival though saw Hunt lose out to David Kelly and Gavin Peacock (plus the fit-again Quinn), omitted from the squad for a successful relegation fight and failing to earn a recall despite then scoring seven goals in four reserve games.

A year on and with his only senior action for KK coming in two Anglo Italian Cup ties, Hunt was made available for loan in March 1993.

A reunion with Ardiles - by now at West Bromwich Albion - followed and that soon bore fruit, with a seven minute hat trick on his home debut.

Scoring in the Division Two playoff final victory over Port Vale at Wembley then paved the way for a permanent £100k move.

Hunt made over 200 appearances for the Baggies before joining Charlton Athletic on a free transfer in 1998.

However, he was forced to retire prematurely in 2001; unable to train properly and playing with what was later diagnosed as post-viral fatigue syndrome.

Relocating to Belize, the climate aided Andy's recovery to such an extent that he rejoined Charlton in late 2003 and made a playing comeback for their reserve team.

That was partially successful, but Hunt opted to return to Belize, running the Green Dragon Adventure Travel Centre.

Hunt has said about his time on Tyneside:

"I have very fond memories of Newcastle. I left home to set up a new life there, started a career as a footballer, was introduced regretfully to the nightlife of the Big Market (my head hurts thinking about that place), froze my #$%* off practicing at the old Training Ground (the name eludes me).

"Of all the places to put a training ground, the top of a hill was not one of them. We get hurricane season here in Belize, but Newcastle used to have ice cold wind season for what felt like most of the year.

"Add the rain to this and you get a lot of unhappy faces trudging out onto the practice field every morning. Which brings me back to the hardcore fans.

"I still remember seeing the fans walking down the streets before and after the game, wearing little more than their short sleeved replica shirts protecting them from the biting wind.

"Newcastle was my initiation into the world as an independent person, away from friends and family, a place where my career started and where the generous Geordie spirit and infectious sense of humour always made me laugh.

"They really are the definition of the phrase 'Sleeping Giant'."

What Else?

1862 We went to Blaydon Races....
A version of the song lyrics is here.

Perhaps those who insist on singing "gannin' along the Scotswood Road" instead of "passing the folks along the road" can brush up on the correct version....

1965 Days after his initial two season deal expired, Joe Harvey agreed a new five year contract to manage Newcastle;

The Magpies boss commented:

"All I can say now is that I am very thrilled to be managing Newcastle in Division One and I cannot speak too highly of the services given by coach Jimmy Greenhalgh, the rest of the training and treatment staffs and of course a grand set of players and loyal club men.

"In addition the board have backed us all to the hilt and we all applaud the best supporters in the country."

The Far East tour concluded in Iran after stops in Thailand and Hong Kong, with this game staged in the capital, Tehran.

1979 Kevin Keegan reached number 31 in the UK Pop Charts with a ditty entitled "Head Over Heels in Love" and lost classic B side "Move On Down".

The nation then suffered further punishment when KK appeared on the BBC's "Little and Large Show" for some witty badinage with the hosts before miming to his tune.

HoH... was composed by ex-Smokie members, Chris Norman & Pete Spencer, staying in the charts for six weeks. It was originally penned for pint-sized rocker Suzi Quattro.

Norman & Spencer went on to write "This Time (We'll Get it Right)" - the Official England World Cup song for Spain '82.

"HoH" was KK's second single, a belated follow up to 1972's lost classic "Do I know you" / "It ain't easy"

2000
Peter Lovenkrands spurned SJP for Ibrox as the transfer saga ended with the Dane joining Rangers.

2005 Transfer rumours had Andy O'Brien joining Portsmouth, Darren Ambrose off to Charlton and Steve Harper switching to Celtic.

Meanwhile alleged inbound arrivals included Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker and Blackburn Rovers 'keeper Brad Friedel - the latter on United's books over a decade earlier but unable to secure a work permit.

2005 Aston Villa boss David O'Leary couldn't hide his glee at news that his midfielder Nobby Solano was retiring from international football.

Little did he know that he wouldn't get the benefit of the decision as Solano would return to Tyneside a few months later.

2007 Mike Ashley (in the guise of St. James' Holdings Limited) was homing in on the magical 75% shareholding in the club, with a statement released from the Shepherd camp suggesting the battle had been lost:

"The time since Newcastle's flotation in 1997 has seen a radical transformation in the club and its fortunes, with the club now being one of the 20 wealthiest clubs in Europe with one of the finest stadiums in European football, a Premier League participant and a regular participant in European UEFA competitions with a fantastic fan base.

"The offer from SJHL is at a level which fully reflects both the performance of Newcastle and its prospects and ambitions for the future.

"The board believes that SJHL and Mike Ashley will be excellent custodians of Newcastle United's heritage and will provide the best possible opportunity for the club to flourish in the future, to the benefit of the company and its fans."

A city source close to the deal asserted that Freddy Shepherd would remain in post as chairman, but this subsequently proved to be no more than a brief stay of execution.

2008 Confirmation appeared on the official Lazio website that they had reached agreement with Newcastle for the permanent transfer of David Rozehnal.

The 27 year-old defender, who cost £2.9m when arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in June 2007, had been on loan to the Serie A side since the January transfer window.

2009
From The Chronicle:

A Far Eastern group has officially declared an interest in taking over Newcastle United.

The news comes a day after Toon owner Mike Ashley put the club up for sale for £100m and invited people to e-mail in with bids.

The Singapore-based organisation has already said it intends to keep Alan Shearer on as manager if the move is successful.

Later editions contained confirmation that the potential bidders were the Profitable Group.

However, the "interest" proved to be kite-flying and yet another organisation after what seemed to be a bit of cheap publicity.

2012
United's Tim Krul watched from the bench as Netherlands lost 0-1 to Denmark on the second day of Euro 2012.

2014
Jack Colback became the first senior player to move from wear to Tyne (and play a competitive game, before you email in to say 'Lionel Perez') since Paul Bracewell in 1992.

The midfielder joined on a free transfer having allowed his contract on wearside to expire.

2015 Ahead of the expected announcement of Steve McClaren as Newcastle Manager, the departure of coaches John Carver and Steve Stone from SJP was reported.

2018
The second night of Ed Sheeran's trio of live gigs at SJP saw another 50,000 sellout crowd in attendance. Support came from with from Anne-Marie and Jamie Lawson.
