Trafford talk resurfaces

Almost a year to the day that reports of interest from Newcastle in James Trafford appeared, identical claims about the Burnley goalkeeper circulated on Tuesday.

Speculation over transfer talks and a £30m fee grew as the 22 year-old 6 foot 6 inch tall native of Cockermouth was on the bench for England in their defeat by Senegal, joining Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon in Thomas Tuchel's squad.

Those reports spoke of Trafford moving to Gallowgate to compete with Nick Pope as first-choice custodian, but whether that's a realistic goal remains to be seen.

With Manchester City as a youngster, Trafford's senior competitive debut came while on loan to Accrington Stanley in August 2021; a further temporary switch then taking him to Bolton Wanderers for an 18 month period.

A £19m switch from City to Burnley followed in July 2023 ahead of their Premier League return, playing 28 times in the top flight for the Clarets that season.

Tipped to leave Turf Moor as Burnley returned to the Championship, United failed to complete a deal as PSR obligations blighted their summer 2024 transfer activity.

Last season saw James keep 29 clean sheets in 45 league outings as Scott Parker's side mounted a successful promotion bid and finished second to Leeds United.

Callum comeback
still a possibility

Friday saw Newcastle confirm their retained and released player lists, Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly the only two confirmed departures - the former becoming a free agent and the latter completing a permanent move to Juventus.

Callum Wilson and John Ruddy remain under contract at Gallowgate until the end of June, United revealing that they "have opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed."

Following announcements regarding contract extensions for Dan Burn, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar, the club confirm that an option has been exercised for back-up goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to remain at SJP for a further 12 months.

Six members of the club's Development squad are also exiting: midfield pair Ellis Stanton and James Huntley, attacking duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Josh Donaldson and the Powell twins Harry and Rory - both defenders.

PS: The lack of any updates concerning goalkeeper Max Thompson and midfielder Joe White looks to confirm that both have contracts running beyond 2025 - something previously undisclosed anywhere we've noticed.

Oliver's (Toon) Army

The Mail report that Newcastle are set to complete a deal for Rangers left back Oliver Goodbrand, with the 16 year-old heading to Tyneside soon for his medical.

The Scottish U16 international debuted for the Rangers B team in a Glasgow Cup game aged 15 and as an academy scholar would be available upon payment of compensation.

PS: reports north of the border have also credited United with interest in a second Ibrox starlet, in the shape of winger Alfie Hutchinson.

The 16 year-old joined Rangers from Hearts in 2024 and like Goodbrand, has played at B team level in the Glasgow Cup.

The badges are sold in a double pack, in stock now online here and we had a pair to give away, asking
which drink became the League Cup's very first sponsor in 1982.

It was of course Milk (referenced in a TV advert about Ian Rush and Accrington Stanley) and rising like cream to the top and bagging the badges was Chris Gunning.

Toon Tone confirmed

Newcastle announced on Thursday that they had reached agreement to sign Spaniard Antonio Cordero when his contract with Spanish side Malaga expires on July 1st.

The 18 year-old right-footed winger made the first of 60 senior appearances for his previous side in September 2023, ending last season with six goals from 39 games as Malaga narrowly avoided relegation from the second tier.

Travelling to Tyneside in recent days to complete the formalities of his transfer, Cordero is now preparing to feature at the U19 European Championship finals.

Defending champions Spain are paired in Group A with Denmark, Romania and Montenegro in the eight team tournament staged in Romania.

Quotes from outgoing Sporting Director Paul Mitchell that Cordero was sought by other clubs in Spain and across Europe back up media claims of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Ajax and Spurs.

A five year contract is claimed in the Spanish press for the player known as Antonito, United confirming that they plan to loan him out next season.

Ajax have been mooted as one possible destination; United successfully placing Yankuba Minteh with Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord following his arrival in July 2023.

Update:
The Spanish
acquisition(s)

Confirmation of Cordero's capture comes 11 years to the day that United unveiled Ayoze Perez at SJP, following his purchase from Spanish second tier side Tenerife.

The 20 year-old forward reportedly rejected offers from both Barcelona and Real Madrid and was immediately integrated with United's first team squad.

Newcastle's next two attempts at bringing Spanish-born prospects to Tyneside proved less successful however, starting with Jesus Nunez Cumbreras in late 2016.

The 17 year-old forward known as Juanito initially came on trial from Spanish Third Division side Recreativo De Huelva but hadn't made a competitive reserve debut when loaned to Deportivo La Coruna in January 2018.

That failed to give him any significant pitch time and Juanito remained a peripheral figure for Newcastle's U23 side the following season before exiting in 2019.

Subsequently playing for several minor league sides in Spain, we lost track of him back in 2023.

Faring slightly better in black and white was winger Victor Fernandez, arriving as an 18 year-old from Cornella on a long-term contract in February 2017.

Some decent displays for the club's U23 side saw him earn a senior call-up for a kickabout against Royal Antwerp staged in Spain during March 2018.

However a hip injury then affected his progress at United and he was eventually released in 2020, playing for clubs in Romania, Greece and Cyprus as well as Cornella again.

Aside from their country of birth, our Spanish quartet all have the common trait of becoming Magpies whilst Steve Nickson was in either a scouting or recruitment role.

2025/26:
£30's still plenty

Sela Cup (h) update

Spanish side Atletico Madrid are confirmed as United's pre-season friendly opponents at SJP, contesting the Sela Cup over a single match as was the case in 2024.

Finishing third in La Liga last season, Diego Simeone's side visit Gallowgate on Saturday August 9th with a 4pm start, following a game between the respective women's teams that will kick off there at 1pm.

Tickets are now on public sale and cover both games.

:
Celtic (a) update

Tickets for Newcastle's visit to Parkhead next month are now on public sale to home fans, Celtic season ticket holders having largely voted with their feet during the dedicated sales period for them.

That apathetic response has been explained by Celtic's decision to charge season ticket holders to attend, having previously included a friendly game in their renewals.

United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - almost 40,000 less than were present for our 1999 game.

Initially at least, only the areas opened up to home season ticket holders appear on the seating plan for public sale - the Main Stand and lower tier of opposite North Stand.

The Magpies were allocated and sold 7,200 tickets.

2025/26:
Korea opportunities

From NUFC:

Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the club's history this summer.

Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest summer sporting events.

Eddie Howe's men will head to South Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Venues and fixture dates are set to be announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea as well as those wishing to travel to support us.

This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.

The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near Seoul.

On This Day in History
10th June

Born Or Died:

1927 William Harry McGarry born, Stoke.
(Manager, 1977-80)

With the honeymoon period of Richard Dinnis replaced by a steady slump, United turned to an old school disciplinarian manager in an attempt to end the days of "player power" within the SJP dressing room.

Playing for Port Vale and Huddersfield Town as well as winning four full England caps, Bill began his managerial career in 1961 when becoming Bournemouth player/boss.

He later managed Watford, Ipswich Town, Wolves and the Saudi Arabian national side before moving to SJP in November 1977.

Avoiding relegation proved to be impossible, but McGarry's appointment had been with one eye on rebuilding the club once in the second tier, before gaining promotion.

The 1978/79 season saw his side finish well off the pace in eighth but after a good start to the following campaign, a post-Christmas slump ended in a ninth place finish - as the mackems went up after a late surge.

With no wins from his first three league games of the 1980/81 season, McGarry was then sacked and Arthur Cox appointed - after former boss Joe Harvey had briefly assumed a caretaker role.

McGarry later scouted for Brighton before another overseas post saw him coach Zambian side Power Dynamo, before moving on to take charge of their national team.

After working in South Africa he returned to Wolves in 1985, but lasted barely two months at Molineux before resigning.

What proved to be his final active role saw him coach Bophuthatswana. McGarry spent his final years living in South Africa and died in March 2005.

PS: Chumbawamba's 1997 Tubthumper album contains evidence of McGarry's unpleasantness, with a foul-mouthed exchange sampled for Creepy Crawling.

1959 Billy Whitehurst born, Thurnscoe, Yorkshire. (1985-86)

Burly forward signed from Hull City during December 1985 for £232,000 to replace Watford-bound George Reilly, debuting soon after in a 0-2 loss at Luton Town.

A cult hero at Boothferry Park after earlier playing for Retford Town, Bridlington Town and Mexborough, former bricklayer Billy took a sadistic delight in demolishing anything in his path, sheer brute force compensating for a lack of finesse.

To anyone who never saw him in action, think of fellow Tigers hero Dean Windass, only with a few rougher edges...

Installed in a Jesmond hotel by United, Billy teamed up with fellow resident and Magpie John Bailey, who between them had a collective thirst of legendary proportions.

When recalling his on-field displays in a black and white shirt, two games against Everton come to the fore.

One was a 2-2 home draw on New Years Day when Paul Bracewell limped off after being flattened by Billy, who also left various other visiting players nursing a variety of injuries.

The other one was at Goodison, when Billy went up for a challenge with three Toffees, and was the only one left standing, in a scene akin to something out of WWE....

An abrupt departure came after making "V" signs at home fans when substituted during a League Cup tie against Bradford City at St.James' Park in October 1986.

Whitehurst swiftly apologised, but boss Willie McFaul had seen enough and put him on the transfer list, with Oxford United quickly shelling out £187,500 for him.

Subsequent moves took Billy on to Reading, the mackems, Hull City (again), Sheffield United, Stoke City (loan), Doncaster Rovers, Crewe Alexandra (loan), Hatfield Main, Kettering Town, Goole Town, Stafford Rangers, Mossley, South China (Hong Kong), Glentoran (Northern Ireland) and finally non-league Frickley Athletic.

Hanging up his boots at the latter when he took over as manager in 1994, Billy also had spells running The Cricketers Arms near Bramall Lane and also The Butchers Arms in his home village of Thurnscoe.

While working on a building site in Nottingham, he received a probation order following a 2005 conviction for making fraudulent benefit claims.

That wasn't the first time that Billy ended up in the dock, but an earlier assault charge arising from a dispute with a pub customer saw him found not guilty.

And more recently he was reported to be living in Doncaster and working at a power station in the area.

An autobiography entitled "Alan Shearer's got my shirt" aka "The Hardest Man in Football" was advertised in 2005 but seems to have never actually made it into print.

Hopefully that book will one day appear, lifting the lid on the urban legend of Billy's bare knuckle fighting with gypsies....

1969 Ronny Johnsen born, Sandefjord, Norway (2004-05)

The first signing made by Graeme Souness, Johnsen arrived to boost our defence after the transfer window had closed, but was available as he was a free agent.

Five appearances followed for the much- decorated former Manchester United defender and Norwegian international, who had left Aston Villa earlier that year.

After three reserve warm-ups, Johnsen made his debut in a home League Cup win over Norwich City, aged 35 years & four months.

That was first of five appearances, the last of which came in a 0-4 reverse at Chelsea in December 2004.

Following his release from SJP, Johnsen announced his retirement from playing, only to then reverse that decision later in 2005 and sign for Oslo-based side Valerenga.

Amazingly Johnsen was then handed an international recall in 2007, his 62nd cap coming over three years after the 61st.

Ronny played on for Valerenga past his 39th birthday, eventually calling time on his career in November 2008.

A return to Old Trafford later followed, when appointed as a Manchester United Ambassador, based in Norway.

1989 Glenn Reay born, Durham.
(2000-07)

Midfielder who graduated from the Academy to the reserves, with a competitive second string debut coming in a 2-2 draw with Everton at Kingston Park in August 2006.

However, that proved to be the high point in Glenn's time at SJP and he departed the following summer after failing to win a full professional contract.

Later appearing for Northern League sides Washington, Chester-le-Street, Ryton and South Shields, Glenn joined Northumbria Police.

What Else?

1931 United signed outside right William Gallantree from local side Harton Colliery.

Initially with the Magpies as an amateur, the 17 year-old agreed professional terms early the following season and made his senior debut against Liverpool days after turning 18 on Christmas Day.

That would be his sole top-flight outing; eight further games and two goals coming after Newcastle's relegation.

Newcastle's South African Tour moved on to Portuguese East Africa (later Maputo, the capital of Mozambique), with a young Eusebio an eager spectator.

1973 Nearly a year after his last call-up, Malcolm Macdonald made an appearance for England as a substitute in their 2-1 victory over Russia in the Moscow's Lenin Stadium.

1984 Future United veteran John Barnes scored a Brazilian type goal in the Maracana Stadium, Rio De Janeiro as England overcame Brazil in a 2-0 to record their first defeat of their hosts in that stadium for quarter of a century.

1996 Euro '96 came to SJP, as France beat Romania 1-0 in the first of three Group B fixtures to be played there.

AC Milan-bound Christophe Dugarry scored the vital goal after 25 minutes, front of a crowd of 26,323.

The Toon fans in the crowd jeered French coach Aimé Jacquet for omitting local favourite David Ginola from the squad.

1999 Celtic revealed the "dream pairing" of former Magpies King Kenny & Queen Barnesy as joint Managers.

However the latter lasted less than eight months, forced out in the aftermath of Celtic's infamous home loss to minnows Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

2006 Newcastle's Michael Owen played for 55 minutes of England's opening World Cup group game against Paraguay in Frankurt.

Former United midfielder Diego Gavilan was among the substitutes for Paraguay, but wasn't used as England won 1-0.

2007 It seemed like the way was being paved for Michael Owen's departure from SJP:

Sam Allardyce said: "If Michael wants to go there's nothing I can do, if another club triggers his release clause. We're benefiting from a release clause to get Joey Barton, but we could also suffer because of Michael's."

Of course that's the same release clause that didn't exist when the Chairman was quizzed some months earlier....

2011 Newcastle completed the signing of Lille midfielder Yohan Cabaye,
The French international signed a five year deal, the undisclosed fee estimated at £5m.

2015
United confirmed Steve McClaren as their new Head Coach, less than a month after his dismissal by Derby County.

In a statement that contained too many painful quotes, this one stood out:

"Managing director Lee Charnley said: 'From my first meeting with Steve I knew he was the perfect fit for Newcastle United.'"

McClaren's unveiling at SJP was with only the club website and their media partners present (Sky and The Mirror).

In 2021, he reflected on that inauspicious introduction:

"Meeting the press, and trying to influence the press, was difficult, because for my first press conference, one member of the press was allowed to interview me and one person from Sky, so there were 26 other people from the media outside the stadium not allowed in. This is my first day.

"I knew a few of them, and a few of them phoned me up and said 'Steve, you've just made the biggest mistake ever on your first day of the job by excluding the press’.

"I apologised....but there was no way I could get round them after that first day so, therefore, I was on a downer already, and I couldn't be honest with my messages to the press."

2022 United's Miguel Almiron scored twice for Paraguay, as they drew 2-2 with South Korea in a kickabout in Suwon.

2023 Sam Fender's second sold-out show in as many nights at Gallowgate saw him joined on stage for two songs by heavy metal shouter Brian Johnson.

Support came from Holly Humberstone, Wunderhorse and Ernie.
