Update:
Trafford talk resurfaces
Almost a year to the
day that reports of interest from Newcastle in James Trafford
appeared, identical claims about the Burnley goalkeeper circulated on
Tuesday.
Speculation over transfer talks grew as the 22 year-old 6
foot 6 inch tall native of Cockermouth was on the bench for England in their
defeat by Senegal, joining Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon in Thomas Tuchel's
squad.
Those reports spoke of Trafford moving to Gallowgate to compete with Nick
Pope as first-choice custodian, but whether that's a realistic goal remains
to be seen.
With Manchester City as a youngster, Trafford's senior competitive debut
came while on loan to Accrington Stanley in August 2021; a further temporary
switch then taking him to Bolton Wanderers for an 18 month period.
A £19m move from City to Burnley followed in July 2023 ahead of their
Premier League return, playing 28 times in the top flight for the Clarets
that season.
Tipped to leave Turf Moor as Burnley returned to the Championship, United
failed to complete a deal as PSR obligations blighted their summer 2024
transfer activity.
Last season saw James keep 29 clean sheets in 45 league outings as Scott
Parker's side mounted a successful promotion bid and finished second to
Leeds United.
That included a memorable double penalty save against the mackems; Trafford successfully
employing mind games to deny Wilson Isidor twice from 12 yards.

Update:
Bill McKinney RIP

The death of former Magpie Bill
McKinney has been announced, at the age of 88.
Wallsend-born Bill served his apprenticeship as a plater at Swan Hunter
Shipyard, playing junior football for both Wallsend Rising Sun and Wallsend
St. Lukes.
Completing his national
service in the army, Bill was selected for their national XI and joined
United during May 1956, playing for their "A" team initially.
Losing out to fellow new
arrival Dick Keith in his first season at Gallowgate, Bill had to wait until
December 1957 for a first team chance, stepping up from the reserves to play
in a 3-3 draw away to Spurs.
Finally becoming a first
team regular at right back in the 1960/61 relegation campaign, Bill played
in both full back positions and at centre half as unsuccessful promotion
challenges were mounted over the next three seasons.
Replaced by David Craig late in the 1963/64 season, Bill featured just twice
more ahead of a £2,750 switch to Bournemouth in August 1965 - leaving
Gallowgate with eight goals in 95 league and cup games.
Reunited with Dick Keith at Dean Court 1966 saw him join Third Division side
Mansfield Town and he played on at Field Mill for another two seasons.
A move to Southern Premier League side Wellington Town (who later renamed
themselves Telford United) followed, McKinney settling in the Shropshire
town of Dawley and remained there after his retirement.

Callum comeback
still a possibility
Friday saw Newcastle confirm their retained and
released player lists, Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly the only
two confirmed departures - the former becoming a free agent and the latter
completing a permanent move to Juventus.
Callum Wilson and John Ruddy remain under contract at
Gallowgate until the end of June, United revealing that they "have
opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts
could still be agreed."
Following announcements regarding contract extensions for Dan Burn, Emil
Krafth and Fabian Schar, the club confirm that an option has been exercised
for back-up goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to remain at SJP for a further
12 months.
Six members of the club's Development squad are also exiting: midfield pair
Ellis Stanton and James Huntley, attacking duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Josh
Donaldson and the Powell twins Harry and Rory - both defenders.

Oliver's (Toon) Army
The
Mail report that Newcastle are set to complete a deal for Rangers left
back Oliver Goodbrand, with the 16 year-old heading to Tyneside soon
for his medical.
The Scottish U16 international debuted for the Rangers B team in a Glasgow
Cup game aged 15 and as an academy scholar would be available upon payment
of compensation.
PS: reports north of the border have also credited United with interest in a
second Ibrox starlet, in the shape of winger Alfie Hutchinson.
The 16 year-old joined Rangers from Hearts in 2024 and like Goodbrand, has
played at B team level in the Glasgow Cup.

It was of course Milk (referenced in a TV

Toon Tone confirmed
Newcastle
announced on Thursday that they had reached agreement to sign Spaniard Antonio
Cordero when his contract with Spanish side Malaga expires on July 1st.
The 18 year-old right-footed winger made the first of 60 senior appearances
for his previous side in September 2023, ending last season with six goals
from 39 games as Malaga narrowly avoided relegation from the second tier.
Travelling to Tyneside in recent days to complete the formalities of his
transfer, Cordero is now preparing to feature at the U19 European
Championship finals.
Defending champions Spain are paired in Group A with Denmark, Romania
and Montenegro in the eight team tournament staged in Romania.
Quotes from outgoing Sporting Director Paul Mitchell that Cordero was sought
by other clubs in Spain and across Europe back up media claims of interest
from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Ajax and Spurs.
A five year contract is claimed in the Spanish press for the player known as
Antonito, United confirming that they plan to loan him out next
season.
Ajax have been mooted as one possible destination; United successfully
placing Yankuba Minteh with Eredivisie rivals Feyenoord following his
arrival in July 2023.
Update:
The Spanish
acquisition(s)
Confirmation
of Cordero's capture comes 11 years to the day that United unveiled Ayoze
Perez at SJP, following his purchase from Spanish second tier side
Tenerife.
The 20 year-old forward reportedly rejected offers from both Barcelona and
Real Madrid and was immediately integrated with United's first team squad.
Newcastle's next two attempts at bringing Spanish-born prospects to Tyneside
proved less successful however, starting with Jesus Nunez Cumbreras
in late 2016.
The 17 year-old forward known as Juanito initially came on trial from
Spanish Third Division side Recreativo De Huelva but hadn't made a
competitive reserve debut when loaned to Deportivo La Coruna in January
2018.
That failed to give him any significant
pitch time and Juanito remained a peripheral figure for Newcastle's U23 side
the following season before exiting in 2019.
Subsequently playing for several minor league sides in Spain, we lost track
of him back in 2023.
Faring slightly better in black and white was winger Victor Fernandez,
arriving as an 18 year-old from Cornella on a long-term contract in February
2017.
Some decent displays for the club's U23 side saw him earn a senior call-up
for a kickabout against Royal Antwerp staged in Spain during March 2018.
However a hip injury then affected his progress at United and he was
eventually released in 2020, playing for clubs in Romania, Greece and Cyprus
as well as Cornella again.
Aside from their country of birth, our Spanish quartet all have the common
trait of becoming Magpies whilst Steve Nickson was in either a
scouting or recruitment role.

£30's still plenty
The Premier League confirm that the £30 adult away
ticket price cap will continue into the 2025/26 season - the tenth
successive season this limit has applied.
UEFA announced last year that away ticket prices for 2025/26 Champions
League games would be pegged at €50.
2025/26:
Sela Cup (h) update
Spanish side Atletico Madrid are
confirmed as United's pre-season friendly opponents at SJP, contesting the Sela Cup over a single match as was the case in 2024.
Finishing third in La Liga last season, Diego Simeone's side visit
Gallowgate on Saturday August 9th with a 4pm start, following
a game between the respective women's teams that will kick off there at 1pm.
Tickets are now on public sale and cover both games.
2025/26:
Celtic (a) update
Tickets for Newcastle's visit
to Parkhead next month are now on public sale to home fans, Celtic season
ticket holders having largely voted with their feet during the dedicated
sales period for them.
That apathetic response has been explained by Celtic's decision to charge
season ticket holders to attend, having previously included a friendly game
in their renewals.
United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same
situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - almost 40,000 less than
were present for our 1999 game.
Initially at least, only the areas opened up to home season ticket holders
appear on the seating plan for public sale - the Main Stand and lower tier
of opposite North Stand.
The Magpies were allocated and sold 7,200 tickets.
Update:
Box office hours
NUFC have announced a
reduction in box office opening hours, in recognition that the majority of

Telephone lines will be open as follows:

Korea opportunities
From NUFC:
Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the
club's history this summer.
Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will
take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest
summer sporting events.
Eddie Howe's men will head to South
Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select
XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Venues and fixture dates are set to be
announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea
as well as those wishing to travel to support us.
This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with
four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup
Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.
The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI
will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near

Born Or Died:
1918
Joe Harvey born, Edlington, Yorkshire. (pl 1945-55) (Mgr/Coach/Employee
1962-89)
An
inspiration as both Captain and Manager and an honorary Geordie, Joe led
United to promotion in 1948, FA Cup success in 1951 and 1952, was trainer in
the 1955 victory and returned as the Second Division title was collected in
1965 and the Fairs Cup four years later under his stewardship.
Beginning his playing career with home town side Edlington Rangers, Harvey
joined Bradford Park Avenue in May 1936 and after stints at both Wolves and
Bournemouth signed for Bradford City two years later.
Serving as Company Sergeant Major in the Royal Army Physical Training Corps
during WWII, Joe guested for Bradford PA, Watford, Aldershot, York City,
Hartlepools, Aberdeen and Dundee United.
Brought to SJP by Stan Seymour at a cost of £4,250 in October 1945, Harvey
was to become a rock of United's defence and a regular in the number 4 shirt
until 1953.
Leaving United in 1955, Joe had a brief spell as Consett trainer before taking
charge of Barrow and later Workington.

Persuaded by
Seymour to return to SJP as manager in June 1962 in succession to Norman Smith
and remained at the helm until the tail end of the 1974/75 season.
By then, the disappointment of losing in the 1974 FA Cup Final had been
followed by demoralising cup exits at the hands of Walsall and Chester City,
plus a second successive fifteenth place finish in Division One that had fans
calling for his head.
Uncle Joe celebrated his 51st birthday in some style (see below) and made a
belated return to management at the age of 62, taking caretaker charge at SJP
following the jettisoning of Bill McGarry.
Harvey passed
away in February 1989 and although his funeral was less high profile than
Jackie Milburn (both players making their competitive United debut on the same
day in an FA Cup tie against Barnsley in 1946) his contribution was no less
vital.

1931 Raymond Ernest Wood born, Hebburn (1948-49)

Goalkeeper who was an amateur with Newcastle, but didn't
feature for the first team before moving to Darlington in 1949.
Just three months later though, Ray joined Manchester United, making his first
team debut against Newcastle in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in December
1949.
Making over 200 appearances for the Busby Babes, Wood won a full cap for
England and also played in the 1957 FA Cup Final.
That ended in a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, with Wood fracturing a cheekbone in
the opening minutes and being led off the field.
However he recovered enough to return as an outfield player, before belatedly
going back in goal in those pre-substitute days.
Wood was travelling as a reserve on the ill -fated flight from Munich in 1958,
but although surviving the crash, failed to regain his place from first-choice
Harry Gregg.
Moving on to Huddersfield Town, he later appeared for Bradford City and
Barnsley.
After completing his coaching badges Wood held various posts with clubs and
national sides in Canada, Zambia, USA, Ireland, Cyprus, Greece, Kuwait, Kenya
and the United Arab Emirates.
Settling in the Sussex town of Bexhill, his death was recorded in July 2002.
1941 John McNamee born,
Coatbridge, Scotland. (1966-71)

A no-nonsense
centre half who had the nerve to rebuff an approach from Matt Busby to move to
Manchester United in 1958, John began his playing career with Bellshill
Athletic in Glasgow while serving his apprenticeship in the Clyde shipyards.
Joining Celtic for £50 in August 1959, John was in the Hoops side beaten by
Rangers in the 1963 Scottish Cup Final replay and capped at "B" level by his
country.
Tempted away to Hibernian by Jock Stein in 1963, United paid £26,000 for
McNamee in December 1966 after
four dismissals had made him something of a marked man in Scotland.
Debuting in a 0-4 loss at Spurs on the last day of 1966, McNamee and fellow
new arrivals Tommy Robson and Dave Elliott would help United pull clear of
relegation.
The following season saw John etch his name in Magpie folklore, scoring a
late equaliser at Roker Park in a 3-3 draw and swinging on the net in
celebration (not the crossbar as some sources report).
John spent his 28th birthday on the bench in Budapest - an unused substitute
as United claimed the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
He had played against Feyenoord and Rangers in earlier rounds, facing the latter at Ibrox
despite a hamstring pull.
Moving on to Blackburn Rovers at a cost of £15,000 in November 1971, later
spells at Hartlepool United, Greenock Morton and Lancaster City followed.
John also took charge of Workington and had a brief stint on the coaching
staff at Carlisle United.
Post-football he lived in Cockermouth and worked for the Royal Mail raising
his four children single-handedly following the death of his wife in 1983.
2009 saw McNamee
back in the news when his home in Cockermouth was one of many
that fell victim to the floods.
Revealed
to be suffering with Alzheimer's in 2017,
a diagnosis of Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) followed - repeated head
trauma now tragically associated with many footballers of his era.
Spending his final days in a care home, John died in November 2024

of Hughie Gallacher.
(1925-30)
The former Magpie striker sadly threw himself in front of a northbound express
train at Low Fell, shortly before a court appearance in Gateshead to answer
charges of mistreating his son. He was 54.

What a night. Two nil down at half time on a "balmy night" as
skipper Bob Moncur called it, then an inspirational half-time speech from
birthday boy boss Joe Harvey about scoring a goal and "foreigners folding
up like a pack of cards".
Within minutes of the restart Moncur volleyed a
goal to make it 4-2 on aggregate, then Dane Benny Arentoft (obviously unaffected
by Harvey's theory) grabbed a third. Finally Alan Foggon scored from his own
rebounded shot to clinch the trophy.
Both goalposts in the Megyeri Stadium were painted with stripes, Alan Weeks
presented highlights on BBC, hardly any Toon fans were there and the whole thing
was nothing short of bloody magnificent...

1986 World Cup Finals action as England registered a 3-0 win over Poland
in Monterrey thanks to Gary Lineker's hat trick - United's Peter Beardsley won
cap number seven.
1990 Bobby Robson's England and Jack Charlton's Republic of Ireland met
in a World Cup Final group game in Cagliari on Sardinia.
Future Magpie Kevin Sheedy equalised Gary Lineker's early opener, while the
Three Lions fielded a trio of former Newcastle players - Waddle, Gascoigne and
Beardsley - plus Barnes and Pearce, who later moved to SJP.
1990 Meanwhile in Genoa, United's Roy Aitken captained Scotland as they
were beaten 1-0 by minnows Costa Rica.
1995 Having moved to SJP just days earlier, defender Warren Barton won
his third and final England cap when appearing as a substitute at Wembley in a
1-3 loss to Brazil.
1998 Free agent defender Darren Peacock
left SJP to join Blackburn Rovers.
2000 Informed sources at the Chronicle
seemed to think that Fernando Meira was on his way from Vitoria Guimaraes to SJP.
Those same sources had reported that Peter
Lovenkrands was a done deal the week before. Neither ended up on Tyneside.
2000 Another Republic of Ireland cap for Shay Given, between the posts
for a 2-1 win in the Nike Cup over South Africa at Giants Stadium in New Jersey,
USA.
2002 Ireland breezed past Saudi Arabia in Yokohama, Damien Duff among the
scorers in a 3-0 World Cup Finals group stage success.
Shay Given had one of his quieter nights.
2003 Michael Owen won his 50th England cap in the gloomy surroundings of
smogside, scoring twice in a 2-1 Euro Championship qualifying win over Slovakia.
2005 Not quite "Sir Les" but it
was confirmed that Les Ferdinand MBE would get a gong after Toon fan Tony Blair
obviously doctored the usual list of rowers and tennis players.
The popular ex-Mag commented:
"I'm very honoured but it hasn't really sunk in. I suppose it won't
until it all happens and I collect my award."
2007 England
U21s were held 0-0 by the Czech Republic in the opening game of their European
Championship finals campaign.
With Newcastle's Steven Taylor suspended, James Milner started for Stuart
Pearce's side.
2008 Speaking at
half time in the Euro 2008 game between Switzerland & Turkey, Alan Shearer
confirmed that he had politely declined an approach from Blackburn Rovers to be
added to their managerial shortlist.
Instead they turned to
Paul Ince who would be replaced by Sam Allardyce halfway through the season.
2010 After what seemed like an interminable build-up, The World Cup
Finals finally got underway with tournament hosts South Africa drawing 1-1 with
Mexico.
In the
other game, Uruguay and France shared a goalless draw with the South Americans
including ex-Magpie flop, Nacho Gonzalez, in the starting XI.
2017 Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie
Woodman saved a penalty to help England win the U20s World Cup in South Korea.
Ex-Magpie coach Paul Simpson's side beat Venezuela 1-0 thanks to a goal
from Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin, before Woodman's big moment when despite
diving the wrong way, he stuck out a hand to deny Penaranda.
2019 Former
Magpie Mike Williamson became the new manager of Gateshead, having joined them
as a player in 2018.
2022 Newcastle reserve defender Lewis Cass made a permanent move to League
One Port Vale, having turned down the offer of a 12 month contract extension to
stay at SJP.
The 22
year-old had spent
part of the previous season on loan at the Valiants but an ankle injury
sidelined him as they won promotion rom League Two.
2024 There was a second
international goal in four days for Newcastle prospect Yankuba Minteh; on target for Gambia as they
lost their World Cup qualifier to Gabon 2-3 in Franceville.
