Update:
Trafford talk resurfaces

Almost a year to the day that reports of interest from Newcastle in James Trafford appeared, identical claims about the Burnley goalkeeper circulated on Tuesday.

Speculation over transfer talks grew as the 22 year-old 6 foot 6 inch tall native of Cockermouth was on the bench for England in their defeat by Senegal, joining Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon in Thomas Tuchel's squad.

Those reports spoke of Trafford moving to Gallowgate to compete with Nick Pope as first-choice custodian, but whether that's a realistic goal remains to be seen.

With Manchester City as a youngster, Trafford's senior competitive debut came while on loan to Accrington Stanley in August 2021; a further temporary switch then taking him to Bolton Wanderers for an 18 month period.

A £19m move from City to Burnley followed in July 2023 ahead of their Premier League return, playing 28 times in the top flight for the Clarets that season.

Tipped to leave Turf Moor as Burnley returned to the Championship, United failed to complete a deal as PSR obligations blighted their summer 2024 transfer activity.

Last season saw James keep 29 clean sheets in 45 league outings as Scott Parker's side mounted a successful promotion bid and finished second to Leeds United.

That included a memorable double penalty save against the mackems; Trafford successfully employing mind games to deny Wilson Isidor twice from 12 yards.

Update:
Bill McKinney RIP

The death of former Magpie Bill McKinney has been announced, at the age of 88.

Wallsend-born Bill served his apprenticeship as a plater at Swan Hunter Shipyard, playing junior football for both Wallsend Rising Sun and Wallsend St. Lukes.

Completing his national service in the army, Bill was selected for their national XI and joined United during May 1956, playing for their "A" team initially.

Losing out to fellow new arrival Dick Keith in his first season at Gallowgate, Bill had to wait until December 1957 for a first team chance, stepping up from the reserves to play in a 3-3 draw away to Spurs.

Finally becoming a first team regular at right back in the 1960/61 relegation campaign, Bill played in both full back positions and at centre half as unsuccessful promotion challenges were mounted over the next three seasons.

Replaced by David Craig late in the 1963/64 season, Bill featured just twice more ahead of a £2,750 switch to Bournemouth in August 1965 - leaving Gallowgate with eight goals in 95 league and cup games.

Reunited with Dick Keith at Dean Court 1966 saw him join Third Division side Mansfield Town and he played on at Field Mill for another two seasons.

A move to Southern Premier League side Wellington Town (who later renamed themselves Telford United) followed, McKinney settling in the Shropshire town of Dawley and remained there after his retirement.

Callum comeback
still a possibility

Friday saw Newcastle confirm their retained and released player lists, Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly the only two confirmed departures - the former becoming a free agent and the latter completing a permanent move to Juventus.

Callum Wilson and John Ruddy remain under contract at Gallowgate until the end of June, United revealing that they "have opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed."

Following announcements regarding contract extensions for Dan Burn, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar, the club confirm that an option has been exercised for back-up goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to remain at SJP for a further 12 months.

Six members of the club's Development squad are also exiting: midfield pair Ellis Stanton and James Huntley, attacking duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Josh Donaldson and the Powell twins Harry and Rory - both defenders.

Incoming:
Oliver's (Toon) Army

The Mail report that Newcastle are set to complete a deal for Rangers left back Oliver Goodbrand, with the 16 year-old heading to Tyneside soon for his medical.

The Scottish U16 international debuted for the Rangers B team in a Glasgow Cup game aged 15 and as an academy scholar would be available upon payment of compensation.

PS: reports north of the border have also credited United with interest in a second Ibrox starlet, in the shape of winger Alfie Hutchinson.

The 16 year-old joined Rangers from Hearts in 2024 and like Goodbrand, has played at B team level in the Glasgow Cup.

Badge winner

The latest designs from Magpin extend his Carabao Cup winner special editions to include Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton posing with the silverware.

The badges are sold in a double pack, in stock now online here and we had a pair to give away, asking
which drink became the League Cup's very first sponsor in 1982.

It was of course Milk (referenced in a TV advert about Ian Rush and Accrington Stanley) and rising like cream to the top and bagging the badges was Chris Gunning.

2025/26:
£30's still plenty

The Premier League confirm that the £30 adult away ticket price cap will continue into the 2025/26 season - the tenth successive season this limit has applied.

UEFA announced last year that away ticket prices for 2025/26 Champions League games would be pegged at €50.

2025/26:
Sela Cup (h) update

Spanish side Atletico Madrid are confirmed as United's pre-season friendly opponents at SJP, contesting the Sela Cup over a single match as was the case in 2024.

Finishing third in La Liga last season, Diego Simeone's side visit Gallowgate on Saturday August 9th with a 4pm start, following a game between the respective women's teams that will kick off there at 1pm.

Tickets are now on public sale and cover both games.

2025/26
:
Celtic (a) update

Tickets for Newcastle's visit to Parkhead next month are now on public sale to home fans, Celtic season ticket holders having largely voted with their feet during the dedicated sales period for them.

That apathetic response has been explained by Celtic's decision to charge season ticket holders to attend, having previously included a friendly game in their renewals.

United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - almost 40,000 less than were present for our 1999 game.

Initially at least, only the areas opened up to home season ticket holders appear on the seating plan for public sale - the Main Stand and lower tier of opposite North Stand.

The Magpies were allocated and sold 7,200 tickets.

2025/26:
Korea opportunities

From NUFC:

Our men's team will play matches in South Korea for the first time in the club's history this summer.

Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, we will take part in the prestigious Coupang Play Series 2025, one of Asia's biggest summer sporting events.

Eddie Howe's men will head to South Korea for two highly anticipated games where we will face a K-League Select XI, followed by an all-Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Venues and fixture dates are set to be announced in coming weeks, along with ticket details for fans in South Korea as well as those wishing to travel to support us.

This will be the fourth staging of the annual Coupang Play event, with four of the six games to date played at the 65,000 capacity World Cup Stadium in Seoul (pictured above), including both 2024 fixtures.

The football-asian.com website claims United's game against the K-League XI will be played at the 42,000 capacity Suwon World Cup Stadium near Seoul.

On This Day in History
12th June

Born Or Died:

1960 Ray Ranson born, St.Helens, Lancashire. (1988-93)

Full back who began his career as an apprentice with Manchester City, debuting for their first team in December 1978.

Appearing for City in both the 1981 FA Cup Final and replay, Ranson moved on to join Birmingham City in 1984 before Jim Smith took him back to the top flight with United in December 1988.

Signed in an attempt to shore up our leaky defence, Ranson made his Magpies bow with fellow new arrival Kenny Sansom in a 2-1 Boxing Day win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Relegation still followed that season however, Ray netting the only goal of his SJP career at the Leazes end against QPR - attempting to scale the fence in his glee.

Remaining with United, Ranson was a regular starter under Smith but overlooked by his successor Ossie Ardiles, returning to the side under Kevin Keegan as demotion to Division Three was avoided in 1992.

Making his final first team appearance in a 2-1 away win against Bristol Rovers early in September 1992, Ray returned to Maine Road the following January and signed for Reading in the summer of 1993.

Working in insurance after injury forced him to retire from playing in 1995, Ranson went on to found his own company and develop a form of insurance-underwritten lease deal that allowed clubs to make new signings and pay for them from future earnings.

His Guernsey-based company  Registered European Football Finance (REFF) was credited with a number of deals at Leeds, notably the Rio Ferdinand transfer.

However, changing circumstances at Elland Road and a drop in fortunes on the field proved costly for Leeds, who ultimately paid the price for living beyond their means.

Ray was also part of a consortium who tried unsuccessfully to buy Aston Villa in 2004 - similar moves to acquire Southampton and Manchester City also failing.

However, Ranson was successful in his bid for Coventry City in 2007, as the Midlands club was set to enter administration.

He installed himself as Chairman at the Ricoh Arena - once the takeover by his SISU Group was concluded - sacking future Magpies assistant boss Iain Dowie and bringing in Chris Coleman, in a successful fight against relegation from the Championship.

However, Ranson stepped down as Chairman in March 2011, with the Sky Blues in financial and footballing strife.

Despite announcing that he was to stay on as the club's football consultant, he had severed all connections with the Sky Blues within days.

By 2015 Ranson was fronting investment bankers London Sport Exchange Ltd, who aimed to "match teams with hedge funds looking for fixed-income returns."

What Else?

1958 Newcastle were interviewing a trio of candidates at Gallowgate for the vacant position of first-team manager.

Durham-born former Portsmouth boss Eddie Lever, ex-Watford manager Len Gouldman and current Mansfield Town Supremo Charlie Mitten were present.

Mitten got the nod.

1975
Blackburn Rovers boss Gordon Lee was unveiled at a press conference in succession to Joe Harvey at Gallowgate - although Rovers were far from happy, having initially denied United permission to approach their Manager.

Lee confirmed that he would retain Harvey's existing staff: Chief Scout Len Richley and coaches Ron Lewin and George Herd.

Among the initial public comments made by him was this telling one:

"I have no problems with players - I make them work hard whoever they are and if they don't I tell them - be it Malcolm Macdonald or anyone else. You can only work with players if you gain their respect and that applies at any level of football."

Although guiding his side to the League Cup Final the following season, the sale of Macdonald to Arsenal would fatally fracture Lee's relationship with the fans and he quit to take charge of Everton in early 1977.

As a measure of his popularity we refer you to a game at SJP in the early 1990s against Leicester City.

Lee was on the Foxes' coaching staff at the time and in the latter stages of the game ventured from the away dugout for the first time, to collect a stray ball.

He was promptly booed from all four corners of the ground. Not forgotten, not forgiven.

1985 United's White Hart Lane- bound winger Chris Waddle won his seventh full England cap in a 3-0 friendly victory over West Germany in Mexico City.

1992 Newcastle's first signing of the summer was confirmed as Paul Bracewell, the midfielder making the short journey from wearside where he had been club captain.

Out of contract and only offered a 12 month extension by the mackems, the 29 year-old defected after a phone call from Kevin Keegan - and the offer of a two year deal.

In pre-Bosman days, a £250,000 transfer fee was imposed by a Football League Tribunal.

1997 Newcastle manager Kenny Dalglish brought in Tommy Burns as his assistant, days after losing his job as Celtic boss.

Burns would only remain at United until the following March, when he was allowed to leave in order take charge of Reading.

1998 Following confirmation that Newcastle had agreed to sign Stephane Guivarc'h from Auxerre, he made the starting line-up for France against South Africa in the World Cup.

However he lasted 20 minutes for France in Marseille before going off injured. Les Bleus went on to win 3-0.

2000 A blank night for Alan Shearer, who collected his 61st cap and captained England as they lost 3-2 in Eindhoven to Portugal in the European Championships.

2003
Nicos Dabizas made his 61st senior appearance for Greece as the Ukraine were defeated 1-0 in Athens

However, the United player was subsequently involved in a car accident when the car he was driving hit a traffic light pillar in Athens before catching fire.

Dabizas made a hasty exit from the car and, according to the Greek football federation website, was treated in hospital for cuts to his forehead and nose and had his broken right arm placed in a cast.

2006 Craig Moore's appearance in the starting XI for Australia against Japan made him the 18th player to have had the honour of appearing in the World Cup finals while a current Newcastle player.

Moore marked the occasion with a 57th minute booking and was replaced on the hour. It ended 3-1 to Australia in Kaiserslautern.
