2025/26:
Cup Schemes x 3 -
sign up by June 27th

NUFC have confirmed the pricing and time frame for season ticket holders to join Cup Schemes for each of the three cup competitions the Magpies will enter in 2025/26.

As was the case in previous seasons, enrolment for the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup Schemes must be done separately and ST holders can opt for 0,1,2 or 3.

For anyone who doesn't sign up, there's no guarantee of any seat for a home tie in that competition and their sales window will open alongside that of club members.

Enrolment must be complete by Friday week, June 27th at 5pm. That is a hard deadline with no exceptions.

Pricing for the two domestic cup competitions is unchanged from 2024/25 at £35 & £30 for home FA Cup ties and £25 & £20 for Carabao Cup games at Gallowgate.

FA Cup and Carabao Cup payments will be taken within seven days of a home game being confirmed.

Champions League tickets cost £70 & £60, increasing from our last entrance in 2023/24 when they were £60 & £55.

Regardless of when United's Champions League home games are staged, payments will be taken for those tickets on the 1st day of July, August, September and October.

Update:
Coach departure

From NUFC, Monday:

Newcastle United Under-21s lead coach Diarmuid O’Carroll has joined Czech First League side Sparta Prague as a first team coach.

The 38-year-old led the Magpies’ U21 side from September 2024 and secured a ninth-place finish in Premier League 2 last season.

He follows in the footsteps of Ben Dawson and Graeme Carrick, who have recently progressed from roles with Newcastle United’s Academy to secure senior first team coaching positions.

Newcastle United Academy Director, Steve Harper, said: “I’d like to thank Diarmuid for his time with us leading the under-21 group.

“The opportunity to work in Europe is an exciting one for him and we wish him the best of luck as his coaching career continues.

“He is the third professional development phase coach to be headhunted from our Academy for a first team senior football role in the last 12 months, which demonstrates that our Academy development pathway works not just for players but for staff too.

“The process of recruiting a new Under-21s lead coach is underway.”

Messrs Dawson and Carrick are both currently without a club; the former leaving Leicester City in February and the latter following his brother Michael out of Boro earlier this month.

AA joins Tynesiders

National League side Gateshead confirm that former Magpie Alun Armstrong has become their new manager.

The 50 year-old came through the ranks at Gallowgate but left without making a senior competitive debut, appearing for the likes of Stockport County, Boro and Ipswich Town during his playing career.

Previously taking charge of Blyth Spartans and Darlington, Alan has been out of management since leaving the latter back in September 2023. More recently he became head of Elite and Performance Football at Gateshead College.

Theatre
compo winner

Returning to Newcastle's Theatre Royal later this month for three performances is "Carrying David", Ed Waugh's stage adaptation of boxer Glenn McCrory's autobiography.

The play recounts Durham-born McCrory's rise to fame in the ring and the inspiration he took from caring for his terminally ill brother, David.

"Carrying David" is on Saturday June 21st at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and Sunday June 22nd at 4pm. Tickets are available now online here

We had a pair of seats up for grabs for one of the shows and asked weight class Glenn McCrory was boxing in when he became World Champion during 1989.

Most folks knew that it was Cruiserweight and the winning entry came from Steve McKenna.

Bill McKinney RIP

The death of former Magpie Bill McKinney has been announced, at the age of 88.

Wallsend-born Bill served his apprenticeship as a plater at Swan Hunter Shipyard, playing junior football for both Wallsend Rising Sun and Wallsend St. Lukes.

Completing his national service in the army, Bill was selected for their national XI and joined United during May 1956, playing for their "A" team initially.

Losing out to fellow new arrival Dick Keith in his first season at Gallowgate, Bill had to wait until December 1957 for a first team chance, stepping up from the reserves to play in a 3-3 draw away to Spurs.

Finally becoming a first team regular at right back in the 1960/61 relegation campaign, Bill played in both full back positions and at centre half as unsuccessful promotion challenges were mounted over the next three seasons.

Replaced by David Craig late in the 1963/64 season, Bill featured just twice more ahead of a £2,750 switch to Bournemouth in August 1965 - leaving Gallowgate with eight goals in 95 league and cup games.

Reunited with Dick Keith at Dean Court 1966 saw him join Third Division side Mansfield Town and he played on at Field Mill for another two seasons.

A move to Southern Premier League side Wellington Town (who later renamed themselves Telford United) followed, McKinney settling in the Shropshire town of Dawley and remained there after his retirement.

Released/retained:
Callum comeback
still a possibility

Newcastle have confirmed their retained and released player lists, with Jamal Lewis and Lloyd Kelly the only two confirmed departures - the former becoming a free agent and the latter completing a permanent move to Juventus.

Callum Wilson and John Ruddy remain under contract at Gallowgate until the end of June, United revealing that they "have opened discussions with both players about their futures and new contracts could still be agreed."

Following announcements regarding contract extensions for Dan Burn, Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar, the club confirm that an option has been exercised for back-up goalkeeper Mark Gillespie to remain at SJP for a further 12 months.

Six members of the club's Development squad are also exiting: midfield pair Ellis Stanton and James Huntley, attacking duo Jay Turner-Cooke and Josh Donaldson and the Powell twins Harry and Rory - both defenders.

2025/26:
Moving on up

The 2025/26 season Magpie Mover is now on sale via NUFC, with the price fixed at £25 (no concessions).

The ticket covers competitive men's first team games at SJP, allowing one direct return trip via specified public transport within Tyne and wear up to three hours before kick-off to the end of daily service post-match.

NUFC's launch announcement reveals that Magpie Movers now come as a digital mobile download, although lacking the capability to open ticket barriers. There's no mention of continued availability in an alternative card format.

For the first time, Magpie Movers can be purchased by Mags+ members in addition to season ticket holders.

On This Day in History
16th June

Born Or Died:

1896 Edward Ward born, Whitehaven. (1920-22)

Inside right signed for £300 from Blyth Spartans in May 1920, shortly after scoring for them in a local Cup Final success against Newcastle Reserves at SJP.

Debuting in a 1-1 home draw against West Bromwich Albion that August, Ted appeared regularly that season but failed to feature the following campaign and joined Crystal Palace in June 1922.

A knee injury limited his impact at the South London club though and he was handed a free transfer a year later, signing for Lancashire side Nelson during their brief stay in the Football League.

By November 1924 Ward was on trial at Darlington and completed the season with them before moving to Ashington (then a Football League club).

Two seasons at the Colliers were followed by spells at Workington and West Stanley before a second spell at Blyth Spartans in 1930.

Initially player/trainer, Ted concentrated on the latter and was at Croft Park in an off-field capacity until 1939 - going in goal for the reserves at the age of 41 on Christmas Day 1937!

His death was recorded in 1971.

1911 Robert Francis Dudgeon Ancell born, Dumfries. (1936-44)

Defender signed from St.Mirren for £2,750 during August 1936, making his debut in a 0-1 home loss to Barnsley soon after.

Capped twice by Scotland in his first season on Tyneside, Bobby shared left back duty with Dave Fairhurst for two seasons before making the position his own in 1938/39.

An ever-present that season, Ancell had played in all three games of the 1939/40 campaign before the outbreak of World War II saw league football suspended.

Continuing to play for Newcastle, he guested for Aberdeen during his RAF service before signing for Dundee in 1944, taking on a player/coach role at Dens Park.

Later working on the same basis at both Aberdeen and Berwick, Bobby took over at Dunfermline in 1952 and after three years moved on to manage Motherwell.

After a decade in charge at Fir Park, Ancell returned to Dundee as manager and then coach before leaving in 1969.

Remaining on Tayside, he covered Scotland as a scout for Nottingham Forest and passed away in July 1987.

1963 Wayne Fereday born, Warley, West Midlands. (1989-90)

Forward who was handed his QPR debut by Tommy Docherty and scored twice against Bristol Rovers in 1980.

Remaining at Loftus Road for almost a decade. Fereday was used sparingly by Terry Venables, but became a first team regular under Jim Smith - by now playing as a winger (and occasionally in defence).

The ex-England U21 player followed Smith to SJP in the summer 1989 at a cost of £400K, signed with fellow wide man John Gallacher to provide service for a
new front pairing of Mark McGhee and Mickey Quinn.

Debuting in a 5-2 home rout of Leeds United, Fereday went to play 41 times for us and almost without exception was utterly terrible - even less effective and more erratic than fellow misfit winger Franz Carr.

Seen for the last time in a 0-0 home draw with Barnsley in November 1990, Fereday was then permanently packed off to Division Three side AFC Bournemouth - proving to be equally inept and disposed of by the time we faced them in the FA Cup in January 1992.

Enjoying something of a resurgence at West Bromwich Albion at full back (although he wasn't involved in their Third Division playoff final victory at Wembley in 1993), Wayne's last league club was Cardiff City.

A short stay at Telford United followed before his retirement and a notion to join the PFA-sponsored referee conversion was later discounted.

Employed as a furniture removal man in the Dorset town of Christchurch, Fereday also worked as a Press Association analyst, compiling match stats. He also appeared for the Baggies in the Masters veteran's series.

Asked about his time at United in a 2003 interview with a QPR fanzine, Fereday commented that moving to SJP was:

"...the biggest mistake I could have ever made and my career was never the same after that.

"The Newcastle fans either love you or hate you, there’s no in-between and I think I let them get to me. In the end Jim (Smith) pulled me in and said it wasn’t working out and that was that."

What Else?

1924 At Newcastle Police Court, George Claxton was found guilty of stealing 46 metal treads and risers from the press box stairway inside Saint James' Park.

The 19 year-old was sentenced to a one month's imprisonment with hard labour.

1985
Cap number six for Newcastle's Chris Waddle as England beat USA 5-0 in a friendly at LA's Coliseum Stadium.

Other participants with a Magpies connection included Kenny Sansom, Paul Bracewell and John Barnes.

1990 A 2-1 World Cup success for Scotland against Sweden in Genoa featured United's Roy Aitken.

1995 Peter Beardsley was awarded the MBE for services to football, obviously.

2002 Shay Given put in another outstanding display for his country, but couldn't write himself into Irish folklore with the penalty saves needed to stay in the World Cup.

A 1-1 draw with Spain in Suwon was followed by a 3-2 defeat in a penalty shootout as Ireland missed three of their kicks.

Whether Shay would have been next up isn't known - future Magpie Damien Duff skulking in the centre circle and unwilling to try his luck.

Andy O'Brien once more failed to kick a ball, meaning his 2002 World Cup participation was purely as a spectator from the bench.

Given throws in the towel

2003 Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd denied all knowledge of a move to bring Tottenham right back Stephen Carr to SJP.

Press reports had suggested a £4.5m transfer was virtually a done deal - which it was, at a cost of £2m over 12 months later....

2008 The fixtures for the 2008/09 season were released, United starting and ended their programme with away games for a second successive season.

The planners also ensured another Boxing Day visit to Wigan Athletic - our seventh consecutive 26.12 away game.

However, no-one could have predicted the 38-game pantomime that was to follow....

2011 Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan left SJP to be reunited with former manager Sam Allardyce at West Ham, as they attempted a Premier League return.

2013 The staggering news started to break that Joe Kinnear had returned to Newcastle as Director of Football.

In a farcical few months it soon became evident that Kinnear was in fact Director of F***all....

2014 Recently-departed Magpie Shola Ameobi appeared as a substitute for Nigeria in the World Cup Finals.

However, he failed to prevent a disappointing 0-0 draw for the Super Eagles against Iran in Group F in the Brazilian city of Curitiba.

2021 Switzerland's second group game of the delayed Euro2020 tournament saw them concede three goals without reply to Italy at Rome's Olympic Stadium.

Newcastle's Fabian Schar kept his place in the starting line-up.

2023 Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson featured for England in a 4-0 European Championship qualifying win in Malta.

The full back played 90 minutes with the striker arriving from the bench on the hour and completing the scoring with a late penalty conversion -  his first competitive goal for England and first in our colours.
