2025/26:
Villa (a) Newcastle
will begin their 2025/26 season against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday
August 16th, with kick-off confirmed as 12.30pm for live UK TV
(TNT Sports).
The first Tyne-wear derby league fixtures since 2015/16 take United to the
dark place on or around December 13th, with the return at SJP on or around
March 21st - a game that would be rescheduled should Eddie Howe's side make it
to Wembley to defend the Carabao Cup.
The festive season will be played away from Tyneside, with successive trips
to Manchester United and Burnley - note that the only "blackout"
day announced by the PL is December 24th, meaning that fixtures are liable
to be rescheduled to both December 26th and January 1st.
There's a Wednesday night London game
against Spurs in February, but a further trio of midweek home fixtures.
Two Saturday home games are set to be pushed back to Sundays as a result of
European scheduling: the visit of Nottingham Forest to SJP in October moving
to Sunday 5th assuming that the visitors have progressed through their
Conference playoff and are in action on Thursday 2nd.
Similarly, the home game against Aston Villa in January should move to
Sunday 25th as the Villans will be in Europa League action the previous
Thursday.
There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the
semi-finals, with the Quarter Finals on or around Saturday April 4th, which
is the Easter weekend.
That follows an international break, meaning that there's a guaranteed 19
day period with no PL games as it stands.
The final home game against West Ham is scheduled
on Sunday May 17th along with the rest of the PL games that weekend.
Saturday May 16th is clear for the FA Cup Final.
The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to Fulham on Sunday
May 24th, Craven Cottage also the venue for our 38th and final PL game in
2019 and 2021.
United's visit to Everton is scheduled for the final weekend of November, with
the Hill Dickinson Stadium the 61st venue to have staged a
PL fixture involving the Magpies.
This will be the first time since 2020/21 that Newcastle have begun and
ended a season away from home.

Update:
Coach departure
Newcastle confirmed on Monday that U21 lead coach Diarmuid O’Carroll
had left Gallowgate in order to join the senior team coaching staff at
Czechs Sparta Prague.
O'Carroll moved from his post as St. Mirren assistant manager in September
2024 to join the Magpies, combining that role with coaching the Northern
Ireland national team.
The U21 lead coach role became vacant in July 2024 when Ben Dawson left to
join Leicester City, Neil Winskill and Jack Ross taking interim charge until
O'Carroll's appointment.

Gateshead confirm that former Magpie Alun Armstrong has become their
new manager.
The 50 year-old came through the ranks at Gallowgate but left without making
a senior competitive debut, appearing for the likes of Stockport County,
Boro and Ipswich Town during his playing career.
Previously taking charge of Blyth Spartans and Darlington, Alan has been out
of management since leaving the latter back in September 2023. More recently
he became head of Elite and Performance Football at Gateshead College.

Update:
Bill McKinney RIP
The death of former Magpie Bill
McKinney has been announced, at the age of 88.
Wallsend-born Bill served his apprenticeship as a plater at Swan Hunter
Shipyard, playing junior football for both Wallsend Rising Sun and Wallsend
St. Lukes.
Completing his national
service in the army, Bill was selected for their national XI and joined
United during May 1956, playing for their "A" team initially.
Losing out to fellow new
arrival Dick Keith in his first season at Gallowgate, Bill had to wait until
December 1957 for a first team chance, stepping up from the reserves to play
in a 3-3 draw away to Spurs.
Finally becoming a first
team regular at right back in the 1960/61 relegation campaign, Bill played
in both full back positions and at centre half as unsuccessful promotion
challenges were mounted over the next three seasons.
Replaced by David Craig late in the 1963/64 season, Bill featured just twice
more ahead of a £2,750 switch to Bournemouth in August 1965 - leaving
Gallowgate with eight goals in 95 league and cup games.
Reunited with Dick Keith at Dean Court 1966 saw him join Third Division side
Mansfield Town and he played on at Field Mill for another two seasons.
A move to Southern Premier League side Wellington Town (who later renamed
themselves Telford United) followed, McKinney settling in the Shropshire
town of Dawley and remained there after his retirement.

Born Or Died:
1931
Neville Black born, Ashington.
(1949-53)

Inside forward recruited
from Pegswood
in September 1949 who failed to make a league
appearance during his time at United.
However, Neville was part of the Magpies side
beaten 4-2 in the 1952 Charity Shield game by Manchester United at Old
Trafford.
Joining Exeter City the following January, he moved on to Rochdale ahead of the
1953/54 season.
Returning to his native Northumberland after three seasons at Spotland, Black
signed for his hometown club Ashington.
His death was recorded during 2004.
1936
Gordon Hughes born, Washington. (1956-63)

Right winger who played for Fatfield Juniors before joining Easington Lane,
where he was rejected by both Boro and the mackems after trials due to his
diminutive size.
Moving on to Tow Law Town and scoring a hat trick for Durham on his county
debut, Gordon was set to sign professionally for Workington Town when Newcastle
scout George Jobling offered a trial at SJP.
A part-time professional contract was offered and accepted, with Hughes still working at Harraton Colliery when
his United first team debut came in September
1956.
5 foot 6 inches tall by then, Gordon made an instant impression in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at SJP
despite having played just five reserve games previously.
However, his ascent to the first team was abruptly halted just two days later,
when playing for United in a testimonial match against Morton at Cappielow
Park.
An ankle fracture put him out of action for three months and Hughes managed
just one more first team appearance that season.
The following four campaigns saw him play regularly - especially following the
arrival of manager Charlie Mitten - although his best return of 34 starts and
11 goals came in the relegation season of 1960/61.
The replacement of Mitten by Norman Smith in October 1961 saw Hughes feature
more sporadically, before injury kept him out of the first team picture until
March 1963.
Making half a dozen late season starts for Joe Harvey, Gordon was then sold to
Derby County for £12K as part of a clearout - not a bad return for a player
bought for £30!
In five seasons at the Baseball Ground, Hughes made over 200 appearances for
the Rams, later playing for both Lincoln City and Boston United before retiring
in March 1972.
He later returned to live

1949
Vivian Dennis Busby born, Slough. (1971-72)

Striker who had a three
month loan spell with United from Luton Town
during the 1971/72 season, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 victory at West
Bromwich Albion.
Viv's final game came in the infamous FA Cup defeat at Hereford, a result which
wrecked hopes of a permanent transfer to SJP as he later recollected:
"If we had won that game Newcastle
would have made enough from the next tie, at home to West Ham, to pay the £60,000
asking price. After we lost, Joe Harvey asked me to come and see him the next
day and he told me he couldn't be seen to be spending money. I was straight in
my car and back down the road to Luton.
"It
was a real destroyer for me, because I'd had such a good partnership with
Malcolm Macdonald at Luton and we started off so well when I came to join him
at Newcastle.
"They
never show you the goal we scored at Hereford: me crossing from the right and
Malcolm heading it in. We thought that was it: 1-0, just a few minutes to go,
game over. But then Ronnie Radford hit that screamer and Ricky George finished
us off.
Beginning his playing career at non-league Wycombe Wanderers in 1966, Busby became a
Hatter in 1969.
Returning to Kenilworth Road after his stint in Toon, he made a £25K switch to
Fulham in August 1973 and played for the Cottagers in their 1975 FA Cup Final
defeat.
September 1976 saw Viv on the move again, joining Norwich City for a £50K fee.
After just over a year in Norfolk though he signed for Stoke City - appearing
in another FA Cup giant-killing, when the Potters lost at home to Blyth
Spartans.
Later loaned to Sheffield United, Busby then played in the USA for Tulsa Roughnecks
and returned to the UK for spells with both Blackburn
Rovers and York City.
Beginning his coaching career at Bootham Crescent under boss Denis Smith, he
later followed him to the mackems and also worked as a Manchester City scout.
A first foray into management came in 1993 at Hartlepool United but he lasted
less than a year before being ousted.
Scouting for Southampton and West Brom and working as a local radio pundit in
the North East, Busby got back into football in 1995 when appointed as
assistant to Howard Kendall at Sheffield United - a former playing colleague at
Stoke City.
Following Kendall as he returned to Everton in 1997 for a third stint as
Toffees boss, later becoming
reserve team boss at Fulham.
Working as assistant to Colin Todd at Swindon Town, Viv was diagnosed with
leukaemia in September 2000 and spent 10 months in hospital as he underwent
what was a successful course of chemotherapy.
Returning to coaching with Sheffield Wednesday in 2004, Busby worked with the
Owls female
sides as part of their Football in the
Community programme.
A return to York City as caretaker boss came a year later, before being
appointed as Gretna's Director of Football.
Viv join
the backroom staff at non-league Workington in 2007, living in Carlisle. He announced
his retirement in 2011.
His death was announced in May 2024 at the age of 74.

1975
Bernard Allou born,
Cocody, Ivory Coast.
(1997)

Newcastle took
this Paris St Germain midfielder on trial during September 1997 and he netted
in a friendly at Morpeth Town.
However no deal was forthcoming and Allou returned to France before agreeing a
move to Japanese side Nagoya Grampus 8.
By 1999 he had made it to England, signing for Nottingham Forest but making
only a handful of appearances before exiting from the City Ground during 2001.
Continuing his career in Belgium, Allou played for RWD
Molenbeek, White Star Woluwe, Leopold Uccle and RCS Braine.
By 2012 he was an agent and player boss of Belgian minnows Trabzon Schaerbeek,
later serving as coach of FC Saint-Josse.
He then reappeared in 2020 as Sporting Director of Brussels-based FC
Suryoyes.

1968 A momentous day for the Magpies, as a meeting of
the Fairs Cup Executive in Copenhagen confirmed the
expansion of the competition to 64 clubs.
That was enough to give Newcastle a spot in the First Round draw, which saw
them paired with Dutch side Feyenoord.
1998 Newcastle
recouped the £2.5m they had paid Heerenveen for Jon Dahl Tomasson
when he returned to Holland with Feyenoord.
A player
who looked a world-beater in pre- season lacked a
good first touch and needed too long to settle on the ball
- time that just wasn't available in England.
JDT was played out of position as a centre forward in many
of his Newcastle games, but few tears were shed on his
departure.
Almost inevitably though, he went on to blossom and
collect domestic titles while playing in Holland, Italy
and Germany. UEFA Cup and Champions League winners medals
would also follow, in addition to a century of
international appearances for Denmark.
1998 Newcastle
completed the signing of Stephane Guivarc'h from
Auxerre for £3.5m.
A World Cup winner arriving
on Tyneside - surely fans licked their lips in anticipation? Err, well, certainly not those who had watched his
'performances' in France.
2001 Steve Harper became the latest Magpie to sign an
extended contract, following team mates Andy Griffin
and Nolberto Solano.
2014
Another full game for Cheick Tiote, but his Ivory Coast
side slipped to a 1-2 defeat against Colombia in Brasilia
- a scoreline that jeopardised their chances of making it
past the World Cup Final Group Stage.
2020 72 hours before the Premier League resumed after a 15 week
layoff due to COVID,
Steve Bruce faced the press online.
He confirmed that squad members whose permanent contracts and
loans would expire before the end of the extended season
had verbally agreed to continue playing: Nabil Bentaleb,
Valentino Lazaro, Danny Rose, Andy Carroll, Javier
Manquillo and Matty Longstaff.
2020 It was a different story at fellow PL side Bournemouth, Ryan Fraser rejecting a short-term deal extension in order
to become a free agent at the end of June.
By September the Scottish international had signed a
five year contract at Gallowgate.
2024
In Euro
2024,
Fabian Schar looked to have got on the score
sheet in Cologne... for the Scots.
The goal was officially credited to Scott McTominay,
although goalkeeper Yann Sommer would undoubtedly have saved the shot without the big deflection. It finished 1-1.
