Espanyol (h) now on sale
Tickets for Newcastle's pre-season friendly fixture at St. James'
Park against Espanyol are now on public sale, priced at £25 and £20 for
adults.
The Magpies face the Spaniards in a 7.30pm kick-off on Friday August 8th
- the night before the sold-out visit of fellow La Liga side Atletico
Madrid to Gallowgate.
This will be the fourth successive season that Eddie Howe's side
have concluded their pre-season preparations with back to back home kickabouts,
splitting the squad across both games and giving pitch time to U21 squad
players.
The two sides last met in a pre-season kickabout staged at Espanyol's former
home at Montjuic Stadium in August 2000, the hosts running out 2-1 winners.
The Magpies did rather better in Spain during May 1960,
securing a 5-2 victory at Espanyol's previous Estadi de Sarria base.

Antonio Cordero (Spain U19s):
Mon 23.06.2025 Germany (n) won 6-5 aet ECF (5pm)
Reigning U19 champions Spain are now just one game away from defending their
title, following a titanic struggle against Germany in Bucharest on Monday.
Recently-acquired
Magpie Cordero was in the starting line-up but saw his penalty
kick saved before going off with 81 minutes played.
At that point the Spanish trailed 1-2 but recovered to lead 3-2 in time
added on before scoring an even later OG to trigger extra time and then go
on to claim victory.
Spain will meet Netherlands in the final on Thursday.

William Osula (Denmark U21s):
Sunday 22.06.2025 France (n) lost 2-3 ECF QF
The Newcastle forward was unable to add to his three goals and two assists
in the tournament in Sunday's quarter final tie. Playing for the opening 60
minutes in Presov, he made little impact and went off with his side 2-1
ahead.
Tino Livramento (England U21s):
Sat 21.06.2025 Spain (n) won 3-1 ECF
With the Newcastle full back restored to the starting line-up, England ran
out winners in Trnava. Livramento completed the full game at right back while ex-Magpie
Elliot Anderson rounded off the scoring with a late penalty.
Thankfully our man avoided serious injury when he jumped out of the way of a
scything tackle late in the contest that sparked confrontations between the
teams on and off the pitch.
England's reward is a semi-final meeting with the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Available
online now is the latest issue of Seen.By. a softback
photography fanzine that covers regional topics captured by a loose
collective of photographers.
Issue 2 documents the events of March 2025, when Newcastle's eternal quest
to win silverware ended in memorable style against Liverpool at Wembley.
Photos of that day from Wembley, Covent Garden and Tyneside are joined in
the 84 pages by other memorable shots from the open top bus parade and
celebrations.
Limited to 250 copies, the fanzine costs £10 plus £3.70 postage (overseas
postage rates available on request) and can be purchased online here
We had copies to give away and asked who the
last English -born Manager
before Eddie Howe to win the League
Cup was, doing so in 2004 with Middlesbrough.
It was of course Steve McClaren and the winning entries came from Graeme
Herberson and Simon Ritter.

Cup Schemes x 3:
sign up by Friday Sign-ups
remain open for the three stand-alone home cup schemes available, allowing
season ticket holders to guarantee entry to Champions League, FA Cup and
Carabao Cup fixtures at Gallowgate this coming season.
Enrolment must be complete by Friday June 27th at 5pm. That is
a hard deadline with no exceptions.
Anyone struggling to opt in can contact NUFC via 0344
372 1892 from 10am until 5pm every weekday, but the ticket office in
the Milburn Stand will only be open for personal callers this coming Wednesday
from 10am to 5pm.
For anyone who doesn't sign up, there's no guarantee of any seat for a home
tie in that competition and their sales window will open alongside that of
club members.
Pricing for the two domestic cup competitions is unchanged from 2024/25 at
£35 & £30 for home FA Cup ties and £25 & £20 for Carabao Cup
games at SJP.
FA Cup and Carabao Cup payments will be taken within seven days of a home
game being confirmed.
Champions League tickets cost £70 & £60, increasing from our last
entrance in 2023/24 when they were £60 & £55.
Regardless of when United's Champions League home games are staged, payments
will be taken for those tickets on the 1st day of July, August, September
and October.

2025/26:
Fixtures announced Newcastle
will begin their 2025/26 season against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday
August 16th, with kick-off confirmed as 12.30pm for live UK TV
(TNT Sports).
The first Tyne-wear derby league fixtures since 2015/16 take United to the
dark place on or around December 13th, with the return at SJP on or around
March 21st - a game that would be rescheduled should Eddie Howe's side make it
to Wembley to defend the Carabao Cup.
The festive season will be played away from Tyneside, with successive trips
to Manchester United and Burnley - note that the only "blackout"
day announced by the PL is December 24th, meaning that fixtures are liable
to be rescheduled to both December 26th and January 1st.
There's a Wednesday night London game
against Spurs in February, but a further trio of midweek home fixtures.
Two Saturday home games are set to be pushed back to Sundays as a result of
European scheduling: the visit of Nottingham Forest to SJP in October moving
to Sunday 5th assuming that the visitors have progressed through their
Conference playoff and are in action on Thursday 2nd.
Similarly, the home game against Aston Villa in January should move to
Sunday 25th as the Villans will be in Europa League action the previous
Thursday.
There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the
semi-finals, with the Quarter Finals on or around Saturday April 4th, which
is the Easter weekend.
That follows an international break, meaning that there's a guaranteed 19
day period with no PL games as it stands.
The final home game against West Ham is scheduled
on Sunday May 17th along with the rest of the PL games that weekend.
Saturday May 16th is clear for the FA Cup Final.
The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to Fulham on Sunday
May 24th, Craven Cottage also the venue for our 38th and final PL game in
2019 and 2021.
United's visit to Everton is scheduled for the final weekend of November, with
the Hill Dickinson Stadium the 61st venue to have staged a
PL fixture involving the Magpies.
This will be the first time since 2020/21 that Newcastle have begun and
ended a season away from home.

The return of Burnley, Leeds United and the mackems at the expense of
Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City means that Newcastle's seasonal
away mileage will reduce by a whopping 1,300* miles from 9,462 to
8,162.

convoy takes to wearside....

Old
boys:
The departed
Former Magpie
Andy Carroll has announced his departure from Bordeaux, after
spending one season with the club who were demoted to the fourth
tier of French football due to financial issues.
It's unclear whether the 36 year-old will extend his playing career
elsewhere, but in a statement confirming the exit, Bordeaux say
Carroll is returning to England in order to be closer to his
children.
Also heading for pastures new is Steven Taylor, who is
standing down as Coach of UAE-based Al Qabila despite leading the
club to promotion last season.
And League of Ireland Shelbourne have confirmed the mid-season
departure of manager Damien Duff, ahead of next month's
Champions League meeting with Linfield.
U21s:
Mariners again
In
a repeat of their 2024/25 pre-season meeting, Newcastle U21s will
travel to South Shields for a friendly fixture on Sunday
August 3rd. Kick-off is at 3pm.
Before that public fixture, the second string host Hull City U21s
behind closed doors on Saturday July 26th (1pm).
2025/26:
Teen trio commit
Newcastle have agreed
contract extensions with three 18 year-old players on the verge of the
senior squad.
Full back Leo Shahar, winger Trevan Sanusi and forward Sean
Neave have all put pen to paper on new deals of unspecified duration.
First professional contracts have been
awarded to forward Joe Brayson and defensive duo Logan Watts
and Luke Craggs, who are all 18 or reach that age imminently.
Elsewhere in the Academy, Sam Alabi, Michael Mills and Sam
Pinnington have accepted scholarships and Thomas Bryant's scholarship
is extended into a third year.
Update:
Coach departure
Newcastle confirm that U21 lead coach Diarmuid O’Carroll
has left Gallowgate in order to join the senior team coaching staff at
Czechs Sparta Prague.
O'Carroll moved from his post as St. Mirren assistant manager in September
2024 to join the Magpies, combining that role with coaching the Northern
Ireland national team.
The U21 lead coach role became vacant in July 2024 when Ben Dawson left to
join Leicester City, Neil Winskill and Jack Ross taking interim charge until
O'Carroll's appointment.
Old
boy:
AA joins Tynesiders
National League side
Gateshead have appointed former Magpie Alun Armstrong as their
new manager.
The 50 year-old came through the ranks at Gallowgate but left without making
a senior competitive debut, appearing for the likes of Stockport County,
Boro and Ipswich Town during his playing career.
Previously taking charge of Blyth Spartans and Darlington, Alan has been out
of management since leaving the latter back in September 2023. More recently
he became head of Elite and Performance Football at Gateshead College.
2025/26:

Born Or Died:
1870 James Logan born, Troon, Scotland. (1895-96)
Centre forward
Jimmy began his playing career with Ayr and had already been capped by Scotland
at senior level when joining the mackems in 1891.
However he failed to settle on wearside and after a second stint with Ayr,
returned to England with Aston Villa in 1892.
Logan's next stop was Notts County and a hat trick in the 1894 FA Cup Final
helped them to a 4-1 win over Bolton.
Another move took Jimmy to Dundee before Newcastle secured his services and he
marked his Magpies debut with a goal in a 3-0 home win over Loughborough Town
in September 1895.
Despite scoring in his first six appearances for the club, Logan fell from
favour at Gallowgate and moved on to Loughborough Town early in 1896.
Tragically, he
passed away at the age of 25, after contracting pneumonia whilst playing for
Loughborough that April.
Facing Newton Heath (later to become Manchester United) at their Bank Street
ground, Logan & Co. played in their own clothes, after Town's kit went
missing.
On a rainy afternoon, The Luffs lost 0-2 and had then to travel home in their
soaking clothes. Logan soon developed pneumonia and although recovering
sufficiently to resume playing, died the following month.
His last resting place is an unmarked grave in Loughborough Cemetery - and a
road in the town is earmarked to be named James Logan Way when redeveloped.

1946 John Tudor born,
Ilkeston, Derbyshire. (1971-76)

While playing local football in
Derbyshire, John appeared in the colours of Chesterfield, Nottingham Forest,
Notts County and Derby County before linking up with Middlesbrough, where he
made it through to their reserves.
Discarded by the Ayresome Park club, he was back at Ilkeston Town when they
faced Coventry City in a charity match in 1964. City boss Jimmy Hill appeared
in that game and offered Tudor a trial at Highfield Road.
Earning a professional contract, John won a Second Division Championship medal
in the 1966/67 season before the cash-strapped club sold him to Sheffield
United for £65K in November 1968.
Scoring twice against Newcastle during a League Cup tie in September 1969
brought him to the attention of Joe Harvey and an exchange deal saw him move to
SJP in January 1971, David Ford and John Hope heading to Bramall Lane.
Initially playing in a forward line with Pop Robson before his departure for
West Ham, Tudor netted five times in 16 outings when operating with Wyn Davies
and Keith Dyson.
However the arrival of Malcolm Macdonald on Tyneside before the following
season proved to be pivotal, with a productive partnership seeing John create
many goals for Supermac and score a fair few himself.
Appearing in the 1974 FA Cup Final defeat to Liverpool, John did win silverware
with United in the shape of the Texaco Cups.
However, it's his FA Cup contributions that are remembered, not least of which
was a diving header against Forest in the riot game expunged from the records,
when the FA ordered the game to be replayed.
Tudor's own personal favourites were both headed goals: at home v Manchester
United and the other at Anfield. "Hallelujah" indeed.
Outlasting Macdonald at SJP by a few months, Tudor made just one appearance
during the 1976/77 season at home to Bristol City, in August of 1976.
Joining Stoke City in a £30K deal two months later, (with West Ham, Spurs and
Southampton also interested), he switched to Belgian side AA Gent the following
year.
A knee injury prompted his retirement in 1978 and he served as coach and later
manager of North Shields, also entering the pub trade in Northumberland.
Later working as a publican back in his hometown of Ilkeston and taxi driving,
John became involved in summer coaching camps for American youngsters in 1991.
1994 saw him emigrate to the USA where he lives in St Paul, Minnesota and
coached at the Tonka United youth side.
Following a heart attack during 2014, Tudor successfully underwent two
operations and within six months was visiting friends and relatives back in the
UK.
Sad news of an Alzheimer's diagnosis - linked to the Jeff Astle
ball-heading case - prompted a rendition of "Hallelujah, John Tudor"
during the Boxing Day 2018 visit to Anfield.
He also appeared on the pitch at St. James' Park, with his
old striking partner Supermac in April 2019, presented with a framed shirt
by Bob Moncur.
Sadly, John died in February 2025 in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

1967 Death of Wilf Innerd, 89

 1976 Death of Harry

(1930-32)
1982 Kevin Nolan born,
Liverpool.
(2009-11)
Midfielder who signed for Bolton
Wanderers as a teenager and made his first team debut in March 2000 at the age
of 17.
Part of the Trotters side who won promotion by beating Preston North End in the
playoff final just over a year later, Nolan went on to score a half century of
goals in almost 350 appearances and became club captain. An England U21 cap
also came his way, against Italy in Pisa February 2003.
Criticised by a section of Bolton fans, Nolan joined United in the January 2009
transfer window in a £4m deal. However, his eleven games that season saw him
fail to score and look sluggish and barely interested.
His two major acts that season had been to miss a penalty against us and earn a
straight red in his third Toon game, for a two-footed lunge on Everton's
Anichebe.
Dropped by Alan Shearer from his matchday 18 for the home game against
Portsmouth, Nolan's departure and return to a top-flight in the summer looked
inevitable.
Instead however, Shearer and his assistant Iain Dowie exited and Chris Hughton
was installed as interim manager once again, with Nolan scoring in pre-season
games at both Darlington and Huddersfield Town.
His increasing influence on the dressing room was evident in the aftermath of
the 6-1 friendly loss at Leyton Orient, when a team meeting is credited as
being a turning point in the club's recent history.
One of a handful of senior players who took on the task of rebuilding team
spirit (and arguably, selection) their efforts almost instantly bore fruit as
United swept all before them in the Championship.
Scoring his first competitive goal in an early season win at Crystal Palace,
Nolan then notched a 21 minute hat trick at Ipswich Town en route to becoming
the club's joint- top league goalscorer with 17 strikes.
The return of Peter Lovenkrands to form and fitness allowed Nolan to move back
from his makeshift striker role to a more orthodox central midfield role.
And as promotion and the title came into sight, Nolan became an increasingly
high profile figure in the media - having taken the captain's armband when
Nicky Butt and Alan Smith weren't in action.
Nolan continued his good form into the Premier League - including the Halloween
hat-trick against the mackems - and after Andy Carroll
departed for Liverpool in January, he was again United's leading goalscorer
with 12.
His "minding" of Carroll, as part of the striker's bail conditions,
thrust him into an unwanted limelight, especially when Carroll's Range Rover
was torched on Nolan's drive.
But despite the successful season back in the top flight, Nolan's contract
extension talks broke down and former boss, Sam Allardyce stepped in to take
the midfielder to West Ham to spearhead the relegated side's promotion
campaign.
Nolan duly captained the side to promotion at the first attempt - albeit via
the playoffs - by beating Blackpool 2-1 at Wembley - missing just four league
games and scoring a total of 13 times for the Hammers.
A return to the top-flight then saw him reunited with Andy Carroll at Upton
Park and marking his return to SJP by scoring in a 1-0 away win - one of ten
strikes that season.
And despite two dismissals in the 2013/14 season and his regular festive
"break" , Nolan finished West Ham's top scorer with seven Premier
League goals.
What proved to be his final Hammers game came in the season-closer at
Gallowgate in May 2015 and after training with Leyton Orient, he was confirmed
as their player/ manager during January 2016.
However, his time in charge at Brisbane Road wasn't a success and he stood down
after barely three months in post.
A second stab at management then came a year later, when Kevin took charge of
Notts County following a change of ownership at Meadow Lane.
Despite registering as a player, Nolan ended up watching from the dugout as a
Magpies side spearheaded by his former Newcastle colleague Shola Ameobi kept
them in League Two with something to spare.
However, the next season he only lasted until the end of August when he was
dismissed after a six-game winless run.
Kevin was appointed first team coach at West Ham United as part of David Moyes'
backroom staff in February 2020, following him out of the door in May 2024.
He became interim assistant head coach of the England U20 side in August and
was took charge of Northampton Town in December 2024.

What Else?

1998 New Newcastle recruit Stephane
Guivarc'h made a brief appearance for France as they
overcame Denmark 2-1 in Lyon in the World Cup.
2002 Freddy Shepherd and Bobby Robson
were seething after former Magpie Glenn Roeder seemed to have poached full back Olivier Bernard for his West Ham side.
Newcastle however forced and won a tribunal that prevented the move and the
Frenchman returned to Tyneside.
2004 England's interest in Euro 2004 ended at the Quarter Final stage, as
they were beaten 6-5 on penalties by Portugal.
Michael Owen had put England ahead after just 3 minutes, but the score was 1-1
at the end of normal time and 2-2 once 30 minutes of extra play had been
completed.
Newcastle's Kieron Dyer watched from the bench as Owen netted his penalty but
ended up on the losing side - Magpies-bound Nicky Butt was also an unused
substitute.
2007 The
Sunday Sun's "insider" claimed that Mike Ashley himself persuaded Freddy
Shepherd to stay on after the Chairman offered his resignation along with the
rest of the board. That claim seemed highly unlikely when Shepherd departed some
weeks later.
2008 Former
Walsall manager Richard Money was confirmed as United's Director of Academy and
Youth operations, with some quotes from the new man as follows:
“It is a wonderful job and I’m relishing the chance to get started. This was too
big a club to turn down. I have enjoyed being a manager for the last four years
but this job at Newcastle is too big a challenge and too big an opportunity to
turn down."
2010 Manager, Chris Hughton addressed three strong transfer rumours:
Steve Harper to Celtic: "I can categorically state that there is nothing in
that. We just won’t sell him. He’s our No 1 goalkeeper, he had a great season
for us and he’s a very important member of our squad."
Rais M'Bohli from Slavia Sofia:
"I actually had a text message from someone about that player, asking if I would
be interested and that is as far as that has gone. I wasn’t even aware of him or
his name, so it’s surprising to hear those reports. We are definitely not
interested."
Jlloyd Samuel from Bolton Wanderers:
"I can’t say there hasn’t been a phone call to see what the situation is. But
has it gone as far as a bid? - definitely not".
2011 In addition
to player recruitment efforts, Newcastle were also in the market for a new
youth team coach, after Frankie Bunn ended his short stay at SJP
and joined Rochdale as Steve Eyre's assistant.
Bunn was named U18 coach in March 2011, having formerly been Coventry's
first team coach
and reserve side boss with Manchester City. His new charges promptly went and
lost six successive games however, before a win and two draws ended the season.
We assume Bunn was lured by the offer of more dough and an expected
rise....
2014 There was disappointment for United's Cheick Tiote, whose error
allowed Greece to open the scoring in a World Cup Final group game staged in
Fortaleza.
Following Tiote's substitution the Ivory Coast levelled, only to see an added
time penalty send the Greeks through to the last 16.

A late concentration lapse denied
United a third
successive Premier League win, after Dwight Gayle had put them ahead
within two minutes of his introduction.
Leading with just seven minutes of normal time left, Jonjo
Shelvey and Martin Dubravka each left Ahmed Elmohamady's near post
header from a corner to each other, gifting Villa a deserved point
as a result.
The identity of the scorer was only too well known to Steve Bruce,
who added the Egyptian to his squad while in charge of the mackems,
Hull City and Villa.

2022 Newcastle's pursuit of Lille
defender Sven Botman was close to succeeding, with reports that a £35m+ fee was
agreed for the 22 year-old Dutchman.
2024 Miggy Almiron started for Paraguay in
their opening group game of the Copa America which they lost 1-2 to Colombia.
