No said Joao, I
don't think so....
The usually-reliable
football writer David Ornstein wrote on Sunday that Brighton and Chelsea
were in advanced talks over the transfer of Albion forward Joao Pedro.
Interest from the West London club in the 23 year-old Brazilian
international emerged this week and it's claimed that the player's preferred
destination is Stamford Bridge.
Earlier: The Times reported
on Thursday that Newcastle's current bids to sign James Trafford, Anthony
Elanga and Joao Pedro had all come up short.
Offers of £25m for the Burnley goalkeeper, £45m for the Nottingham Forest
winger and £50m for the Brighton forward were all rebuffed by their current
clubs - amid uncertainty over whether increased bids will follow.
The Times predicted that improved offers for Trafford and Pedro are
pending but is less certain whether Newcastle's focus will now switch from
Elanga to other claimed targets.
The identity of the other Premier League club chasing Pedro
meanwhile was revealed in the media as Chelsea.
Interest from Gallowgate in those three players is nothing new; Trafford and
Elanga unsuccessfully targeted a year ago and Pedro tracked whilst at
Watford back in 2022.

Another trophy for Tino
England U21s 3 Germany U21s 2
(aet)
England U21s successfully defended their European
U21 Championship title, beating Germany 3-2 after extra-time
on Saturday evening.
An epic contest in Bratislava saw Newcastle full back Tino Livramento
play 120 minutes at right back before picking up a medal to emulate fellow
Mag Anthony Gordon, part of England's cup-winning 2023 squad.
Tino and his
colleagues including SJP old boy Elliot Anderson had gone two up within the
opening 25 minutes through Harvey Elliott and
Omari Hutchinson - only for the Germans to draw level just past the hour
mark and hit the crossbar in the closing seconds of normal
time.
Marseille's Jonathan Rowe then came off the bench to score almost
immediately in the extra 30 minutes - a lead that
The young Lions managed to preserve despite their opponents rattling the
woodwork at the death.
Livramento will now take a well-earned break after a season when he lifted
silverware for both club and country, before a delayed return to pre-season
training with United.

Photos of Newcastle's
2025/26 third shirt have now appeared on Adidas retail websites, although
they cannot be ordered yet. Release date is this Tuesday (tbc).
2025/26:
Celtic (a) more tickets
Following a low take-up
from home fans, Newcastle have now received an undisclosed additional
number* of tickets for next month's pre-season visit to Celtic.
These are now on sale to season ticket holders, with the loyalty point
threshold now at 2 points. Should any remain, that will drop to 1
point at 2pm on Monday.
NB: It looks as if anyone with a greater number of points who didn't buy a
ticket previously when they could have done isn't able to now purchase one.
* Celtic's own publicity has mentioned that 7,900 Toon fans would be
attending - the original allocation was meant to be 7,200; whether that
means that an extra 700 places have now gone on sale is tbc.

Fred the
Red
Former Newcastle goalkeeper
Freddie Woodman will become a Liverpool player next month, following
the expiration of his current deal at Preston North End.
The 28 year-old son of ex-Magpie coach Andy has been at Deepdale for the
last three seasons, following his exit from Gallowgate for an undisclosed
fee in 2022.
Woodman is anticipated to act as third-choice custodian for the Anfield
club, also filling a place in Arne Slot's squad as a home-trained
player.
2025/26:
Familiar foes for U21s
Newcastle
U21s will again play in the EFL Trophy this season - taking
their place in the 64 club competition for a ninth successive season.
Thursday's Group Stage draw placed the Magpies second string in Northern Section
Group F, alongside Harrogate Town, Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town.
Newcastle will play each of those sides away from home, having travelled to
Harrogate in 2021 and Mansfield in both 2021 and 2024. They've not
previously faced Huddersfield in this competition.
Sky Sports will televise all the ties, with round dates tbc.
Games are played over 90 minutes, with a penalty shootout staged if the
scores are tied then and the winners of that receiving a bonus point.
The Magpies were successful last season in a shootout against Bradford City,
but haven't claimed maximum points in this competition since back in 2018.
NUFC confirm that the U21s will enter the Premier League
International Cup for the first time since 2019/20 - pitting them
against European sides. Games are all in the UK.
And the Magpies second string will also take part in the National League Cup
once again, having participated in last season's maiden staging of the
competition.
Draw dates for those two competitions are still tbc.

No glory for Toon
teen
Reigning U19 champions Spain failed to defend their U19 European
Championship title on Thursday, beaten 0-1 by the Netherlands in
the final staged in Bucharest.
Recent Newcastle acquisition Antonio Cordero retained his place in
Spain's starting line-up and came close to breaking the deadlock when firing
against a post from distance six minutes into the second half.
What proved to be the only goal of the tie came shortly after, with the
last touch coming off the Spanish goalkeeper. Cordero was then replaced after
77 minutes.
2025/26:
Espanyol (h) now on sale
Tickets for Newcastle's pre-season friendly fixture at St.
James' Park against Espanyol are now on public sale, priced at £25 and £20 for
adults.
The Magpies face the Spaniards in a 7.30pm kick-off on Friday August 8th
- the night before the sold-out visit of fellow La Liga side Atletico
Madrid to Gallowgate.
This will be the fourth successive season that Eddie Howe's side
have concluded their pre-season preparations with back to back home kickabouts,
splitting the squad across both games and giving pitch time to U21 squad
players.
United's pre-season schedule
consists of these six public matches,
preceded by a behind closed doors friendly:
Sat 19.07.2025 Celtic (Scotland) (a)
Sun 27.07.2025 Arsenal (n) in Singapore
Wed 30.07.2025 Team K League (South Korea) (a)

2025/26:
Fixtures announced
Newcastle
will begin their 2025/26 season against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday
August 16th, with kick-off confirmed as 12.30pm for live UK TV
(TNT Sports).
The first Tyne-wear derby league fixtures since 2015/16 take United to the
dark place on or around December 13th, with the return at SJP on or around
March 21st - a game that would be rescheduled should Eddie Howe's side make it
to Wembley to defend the Carabao Cup.
The festive season will be played away from Tyneside, with successive trips
to Manchester United and Burnley - note that the only "blackout"
day announced by the PL is December 24th, meaning that fixtures are liable
to be rescheduled to both December 26th and January 1st.
There's a Wednesday night London game
against Spurs in February, but a further trio of midweek home fixtures.
Two Saturday home games are set to be pushed back to Sundays as a result of
European scheduling: the visit of Nottingham Forest to SJP in October moving
to Sunday 5th assuming that the visitors have progressed through their
Conference playoff and are in action on Thursday 2nd.
Similarly, the home game against Aston Villa in January should move to
Sunday 25th as the Villans will be in Europa League action the previous
Thursday.
There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the
semi-finals, with the Quarter Finals on or around Saturday April 4th, which
is the Easter weekend.
That follows an international break, meaning that there's a guaranteed 19
day period with no PL games as it stands.
The final home game against West Ham is scheduled
on Sunday May 17th along with the rest of the PL games that weekend.
Saturday May 16th is clear for the FA Cup Final.
The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to Fulham on Sunday
May 24th, Craven Cottage also the venue for our 38th and final PL game in
2019 and 2021.
United's visit to Everton is scheduled for the final weekend of November, with
the Hill Dickinson Stadium the 61st venue to have staged a
PL fixture involving the Magpies.
This will be the first time since 2020/21 that Newcastle have begun and
ended a season away from home.
fixture
list
The return of Burnley, Leeds United and the mackems at the expense of
Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City means that Newcastle's seasonal
away mileage will reduce by a whopping 1,300* miles from 9,462 to
8,162.

29th June |

Born Or Died:
1928 Tommy Cavanagh born, Liverpool. (Trainer 1981-82)

Trainer/coach/assistant
to Arthur Cox during the first full season of his reign at SJP, Tommy played
for Preston North End, Stockport County, Huddersfield Town, Doncaster Rovers,
Bristol City and Carlisle during his career.
After coaching at Cheltenham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Hull City,
Cavanagh moved to Old Trafford and assisted both Tommy Docherty and Ron
Atkinson before making the switch to Tyneside.
Following his departure from Newcastle, Cavanagh managed Norwegians Rosenborg
and also had a stint in charge of Burnley. Working as an FA coach in his latter
years, he passed away in 2007.
1935 Keith
Kettleborough born, Rotherham. (1966)

The lesser
known of the two Yorkshiremen with initials KK to have played for United, Keith
was a talented golfer and cricketer whose batting prowess saw him represent
Yorkshire Schools and North of England.
Joining the RAF to complete his National Service, Kettleborough switched
attentions on football and was invited for a trial with Grimsby Town during
1955.
Nothing came of that but by December of that year Keith had signed for hometown
club Rotherham United, later joining Sheffield United for £15,000 in December
1960.
Helping the Blades to promotion in his first season at Bramall Lane, the
midfielder was also selected to represent the Football League - but continued
to play cricket for both Rotherham Town and Rawmarsh.
Included in Alf Ramsey's initial 40 man selection for the 1966 World Cup squad
(missing out when it was cut to 22), Keith was added to a struggling Newcastle
side at a cost of £22,500 in January 1966.
His influence ensured that United avoided an instant return to the Second
Division - the side's first win in eight games coinciding with his debut at
home to West Ham.
After spending the summer playing cricket for Chester-le-Street, Keith returned
to SJP but unexpectedly joined Doncaster Rovers for £12K as player/boss in
December 1966.
Unable to prevent the side dropping into Division Four, Keith remained at Belle
Vue as a player the following season before signing for Chesterfield and later,
Matlock Town.
Post-football, he worked as a milkman and continued to play cricket for Whiston
Parish Church before becoming janitor/PE teacher of Birkdale independent school
in Sheffield.
Keith died in November 2009 and his passing was marked with a minute's applause
at Bramall Lane the following day, before the Sheffield United v Newcastle
United game.

1937 Chris
Harker born, Shiremoor.
(1955-61)

Goalkeeper who appeared for local
sides Backworth Welfare and West Allotment before joining Newcastle in 1955.
What proved to be his sole senior
outing for the Magpies came in place of Ronnie Simpson for a season-ending 3-1
home loss to Burnley in April 1958.
Called up for national service,
Harker spent time on loan at both Consett and Aberdeen before a £1,000 switch
to Bury in late 1961, shortly after former SJP team mate Bob Stokoe
became Manager at Gigg Lane.
He also finished on the winning side at SJP in February 1965 when Bury ran out
3-2 winners in a fixture where over 10 minutes of time were added in the second
half. That proved to be the only home loss United suffered en route to the
Division Two title.
Later spells at Grimsby Town and Rochdale were followed by a drop into local
league football with Stockton and a stint on the Darlington coaching staff.
Chris remained resident in
Darlington and worked as a mechanical fitter (having given up a similar job in
the shipyards to play football).
A caretaker in later life, Harker died in September 2014, aged 77.

1938 Robert
Gilfillan born, Cowdenbeath, Scotland. (1959-61)

Bobby had been
a prolific scorer for his hometown club when Newcastle paid £4,000 for his
services in October 1959.
Making his debut shortly afterwards in a 0-2 home defeat by Bolton Wanderers,
Gilfillan wore the number nine shirt on four other occasions that season
without scoring.
His only competitive United goals came when he bagged a brace in a 7-2
home win over Fulham earlier the following season but never appeared again
after drawing a blank against Burnley four days later.
Newcastle recouped their outlay in 1961 when Bobby joined St.Johnstone,
later moves taking him to Southend United, Raith Rovers,
Doncaster Rovers and Northwich Victoria
- the latter as player/boss at Drill Field.
Gilfillan was living in the Scottish town of Perth when he sadly succumbed to
prostate cancer during November 2012.

1969
Archibald Murdoch Gourlay born, Greenock, Scotland. (1988-92)

Having
faced him in a friendly at Cappielow during March 1988, Newcastle paid
£50k to Greenock Morton for their teenage midfielder later that month.
Making his reserve team debut in a 3-0 win over Notts County at Gallowgate,
Archie ended the season playing for the U19 side as they won a youth tournament
in Holland.
The only
competitive first team
appearance of his first spell at SJP
was a substitute outing at Luton Town
that
December.
Within 24 hours United moved to replace caretaker boss Colin Suggett with Jim
Smith - and Archie was to play no further part in the club's failed relegation
fight.
Loaned back to Morton for a spell, Gourlay returned to Gallowgate and briefly
featured in the senior side in the 1990/91 season.
A further loan saw him join Gateshead, with one final Magpies appearance coming
in a League Cup defeat at Peterborough under Ossie Ardiles in October 1991.
Following his release by United, Archie joined Motherwell and later played for
Hartlepool United, Linfield, Whitley Bay, Morpeth Town, South Shields and
finally Bedlington Terriers.
Working for a local paper in Northumberland, Gourlay later returned to the
Magpies as an Academy coach.

1979 Andrew
O'Brien born, Harrogate.
(2001-05).

Central
defender with Leeds United as a schoolboy, joining
Bradford City following his release from Elland Road.
Debuting for the Bantams in the Premier League during
1996, Newcastle moved in to complete a £2m move during
the March 2001 transfer window.
Following his unveiling, Andy rushed off to face Cyprus
for Ireland U21s - returning to make his Magpies bow in a
2-2 draw against his former side at Valley Parade.
Following the similarly mundane capture of Wayne
Quinn, O'Brien's arrival was greeted with something
approaching apathy on Tyneside as Bradford continued their
fire sale ahead of an inevitable relegation.
The incident that sealed O'Brien's place in Toon folklore
came in only his fourth game, putting the ball in the
mackem net to
salvage a 1-1 draw at the dark place.
Aside from a memorable photo of a ball hitting his
injury-prone hooter in a game against Manchester United,
his major contribution was equalising at Highbury in December 2001, as United broke their London hoodoo in
considerable style.
A regular starter for Sir Bobby Robson over the following
three seasons, Andy was retained by Graeme Souness in his
first campaign but left as part of a squad clear out
following a fourteenth place league finish and exits in
the latter stages of both the UEFA Cup and FA Cup.
June 2005 saw O'Brien join Portsmouth for £2m, following
former colleagues Lomana LuaLua and Andy Griffin to
Fratton Park. Meanwhile, Souness oversaw the arrival of
Craig Moore to join Jean-Alain Boumsong.
Andy would have a close up view of another moment of
Newcastle history the following February, Alan Shearer eluded
the defender before netting his record -breaking 201st
club goal.
Joining Bolton Wanderers in 2007, Andy was loaned to Leeds United in October
2010,
making
that move permanent in the January transfer window.
However, he only appeared a handful of times in the 2011/12 season and joined
Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps in August 2012, leaving in January 2015.
Andy then
hung up his boots and became a scout for Liverpool.
Alongside fellow ex-Magpie Shaka Hislop and future arrival Lee Bowyer, Andy
played for England U21s at friendly level - earning praise for keeping Thierry
Henry at bay in a 3-2 win over France in 1999.
Ireland hijacked
his affiliations however and after eight U21 outings,
the first of 26 full caps came as a substitute against Estonia in Tallinn
during June 2001 - replacing Damien Duff and joining Shay Given and
Stephen Carr on the field.
