Update:
Elanga - almost done

Several media outlets reported on Monday night that an
initial £52m fee had been agreed by Newcastle for
the signature of Nottingham Forest's Anthony
Elanga.
A five year contract is in place for the 23 year-old Swedish
international winger, who will undergo his medical in the coming 48 hours
before joining his new colleagues for pre-season training.
What is described as a significant sell-on fee will become due to Elanga's
previous club, Manchester United.
The Mail state that delays in completing the deal had arisen from a
recent change of representation by Elanga.
Latest:
Wilson: 49 and out
Statement from Callum
Wilson, Monday:
To all Magpies
It's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon.
Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and
some lows to help the club experience new heights.
I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a
little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as
special as they say.
All good things come to an end but there's no doubt Newcastle United will
always have a place in mine and my families hearts.
Thank you for the memories.
CW9
Wilson leaves with 49 goals to his name for the Magpies - 47 of which came
in the Premier League, a total bettered only by Alexander Isak and Alan
Shearer.
He made 130 appearances in all competitions,
including 81 starts, United playing a total of 229 matches during his five
years as a Magpie.
Talk of a pay-as-you-play deal to remain at Gallowgate following the
expiration of his contract mercifully came to nothing, leaving
the 33 year-old to leave with his head held high - and his reputation
undiluted.

(Monday), but only until 5pm BST on
Tuesday July 8th.
Eddie Howe's side will take part in the Coupang Play Series against a
local XI and fellow Premier League side Spurs.

They face Team K League on Wednesday July

(above). Adult tickets cost £72.

That's followed by a kickabout against Spurs on

The two venues are around 25 miles from each other.
United's pre-season schedule consists of six public matches,
preceded by a behind closed doors friendly. The Mail claim that a training

programme.

Update:
Sca Toon?
Whilst working to close the
Anthony Elanga deal and continuing dialogue with Burnley over James
Trafford, The Times claim that Newcastle have also contacted Serie A
side Atalanta over defender Giorgio Scalvini.
The 21 year-old centre half is an international colleague of Sandro Tonali
and rated at £30m. Rumours of interest from the Magpies surfaced in the
Italian media last month and now appear more concrete, amid claims that
United have monitored Scalvini for the last two
years.
Update:
Teen trio: one in
Sky Sports
report that Newcastle have completed a move for Alfie Hutchinson from
Rangers, the first of three signings set to boost the club's Academy squad.
The 16 year-old right-sided attacker was spotted on Tyneside earlier in the
week and official confirmation of his arrival is now expected in the
coming days.
Also tipped for a switch from Ibrox to Gallowgate is fellow 16 year-old
Scottish youth international Oliver Goodbrand,
whose favoured position is at left full back.
Updates are also awaited on United's proposed acquisition of Isaac Moran,
following news that the England youth international had rejected a contract
offer from current club Liverpool. The central midfielder is also 16.

The latest addition to the
range of Toon-themed bucket hats by Football Bobbles is this
Lee model, inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 change kit and with a
nod to next season's third shirt.
These are available to purchase here
now and there's a special offer for NUFC.com readers of a half-price
Kelly bucket hat with orders of the Lee bucket only.
To take advantage of that, add a Lee bucket hat to the online shopping
basket and use promo code NUFC.com - that will prompt a Kelly hat to
add at checkout.
We had a Lee bucket hat up for grabs, asking you to identify the ex-Magpie
who was a Wembley scorer for his previous club, an England U21 midfielder, a scoring debutant for Newcastle in
1997 and subsequently loaned to Sheffield United.
It was of course Des Hamilton, which most folks knew - although
Tartan pair Paul Dalglish and Stephen Glass both inexplicably cropped up
among those suggested.
The winning entry came from Ann Richardson.

2025/26:
Familiar foes for U21s
Newcastle
U21s will again play in the EFL Trophy this season - taking
their place in the 64 club competition for a ninth successive season.
Thursday's Group Stage draw placed the Magpies second string in Northern Section
Group F, alongside Harrogate Town, Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town.
Newcastle will play each of those sides away from home, having travelled to
Harrogate in 2021 and Mansfield in both 2021 and 2024. They've not
previously faced Huddersfield in this competition.
Sky Sports will televise all the ties, with round dates tbc.
Games are played over 90 minutes, with a penalty shootout staged if the
scores are tied then and the winners of that receiving a bonus point.
The Magpies were successful last season in a shootout against Bradford City,
but haven't claimed maximum points in this competition since back in 2018.
NUFC confirm that the U21s will enter the Premier League
International Cup for the first time since 2019/20 - pitting them
against European sides. Games are all in the UK.
And the Magpies second string will also take part in the National League Cup
once again, having participated in last season's maiden staging of the
competition.
Draw dates for those two competitions are still tbc.

Born Or Died:
1887 Bob Pailor
born, Stockton-on-Tees.
(1914-15)

Centre forward who worked as a miner
and had played for local sides St.Oswalds and West Hartlepool before signing
for West Bromwich Albion in 1908.
Helping Albion win promotion to Division One in 1911, Bob finished on the
losing side in the 1912 FA Cup Final after a replay.
May 1914 saw Newcastle pay £1,550 for his services and Pailor made his
competitive debut against former club West Brom in a 1-2 defeat at SJP the
following September.
By the end of that season though, he'd been forced into retirement through
illness and later took employment as bookmaker in Hartlepool. He died in
January 1976.

1907 Jesse Carver born, Aigburth, Liverpool. (1936-39)

Centre half who began his career with Blackburn Rovers, moving
on to SJP at a cost of £2,000 in June 1936.
Making his debut in a season-opening home defeat by Barnsley, Jesse made 36
league appearances in his first season as United finished fourth in Division
Two.
27 games in the 1937/38 season followed, but with the club avoiding relegation
only on goal average a further overhaul of the squad saw him lose his starting
place.
After a handful of games deputising for first- choice Jimmy Denmark, Carver
joined Bury in April 1939 for £850.
The suspension of fixtures in September of that year due to the outbreak of
war put an end to Jesse's playing career and he joined the police force for
the duration.
Post-war he made his name as much- travelled and innovative coach,
credited with placing greater reliance on ball skills than the usual general
fitness drills.
Starting with assistant trainer duties at Huddersfield Town in 1945, Carver
went on to coach at Xerves (Holland), the Dutch FA, Millwall, Juventus
(Italy), Marzotto (Italy), and Valdagno (Italy).
A brief return to England in 1952 saw him become West Bromwich Albion manager
but within months he'd exited, turning down the England manager's job (a
decision never publicised until decades later).
Coaching Torino and then AC Roma, Jesse became Coventry City boss in 1955 but
once more failed to make an impact in his homeland and returned abroad again,
to coach Inter Milan.
Later moves saw him coach Lazio, Sampdoria,
Genoa, the Swedish national team and Tottenham Hotspur - although his time at
White Hart Lane was brief.
Information is then sketchy about Jesse's moves, coaching Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia
during 1963 and embarking on an FA-sponsored USA tour the following
year.
There's also mention of jobs in Portugal and with the Nigerian national team.
Carver returned to live in England and his death was recorded in November
2003, when living in Bournemouth.

What Else?
1932 24 hours after sustaining a knee injury in pre-season
training, Newcastle goalkeeper Albert McInroy underwent surgery to repair a torn
cartilage.
He recovered sufficiently to take his place in the side for the
season-opener against Bolton Wanderers in late August.
1960 The Chronicle reported on ground
improvements at SJP, with dressing room refurbishment including the installation
of new circular communal baths.
Even more thrillingly, home players would benefit from having their own
individual lockers rather than just a coat peg.
1969 Following his goalscoring heroics in the Fairs Cup Final second leg,
Alan Foggon signed a new and improved contract at Gallowgate.
Fellow 19 year-old Keith Dyson rejected his offer but was persuaded to
stay.
1989
Former Magpie Chris Waddle joined Olympique Marseilles from Tottenham Hotspur in
a record transfer worth £4.5m.
By the time he departed in July 1992, he'd become a cult hero with fans of the
French club and helping them win three titles.
Waddle also played in the 1991 European Cup Final against Red Star Belgrade, but
wasn't one of OM's penalty takers as they were beaten 3-5 following a 0-0 draw.
1996 Future
Gallowgate team mates faced each other internationally,
as Nolberto Solano's Peru were held to a 0-0 in Lima by an Argentina side
including fellow midfielder Christian Bassedas.
1997 Newcastle announced the signing of
attacking midfielder Temuri Ketsbaia on a free transfer from Greek side AEK
Athens.

Ketsbaia had caught the eye in April 1996
playing for his native Georgia in a World Cup Qualifier at Wembley against
England.
Also joining us for nowt this summer would be the "Dads Army" trio of
Ian Rush, Stuart Pearce and John Barnes.
1997 Chris Waddle became Burnley player Manager, fellow ex-Magpie Glenn
Roeder following him to Turf Moor as coach.
57 games later though, with 17 wins, 16 draws and 24 defeats, he was out on his
ear as the Clarets slid out of Division One.
1998 Carl Serrant, a left sided defender
arrived on Tyneside in a £500,000 deal, with another £100,000 due to his club
Oldham Athletic based on appearances. Serrant was reputedly watched by 21 clubs
in the previous season, but only West Bromwich Albion had made a bid, which was
rejected.
United also signed out-of-contract Spurs
youngster Garry Brady on a free transfer. Midfielder Brady had made a handful of
appearances for the London club but was to end up costing us £650,000 at a
tribunal.
2004 Latest quotes from Patrick Kluivert
about claims of a move to Tyneside:
"There have been stories in the press
today claiming I am close to signing for Newcastle United and I would like to
set the record straight.
"It is true that Newcastle have contacted my agent by phone and shown an
interest in me, but I have not yet opened talks with the club. However, I am
very interested in speaking to Sir Bobby Robson about a possible move.
"I can confirm that there are some other clubs interested in me, but we
have agreed not to reveal the names of the clubs. We are looking for a deal to
be sorted out in the next 10 days."
2005 Disgruntled striker Craig Bellamy
joined Blackburn Rovers for a fee thought to be well below the £5m speculated
in the press.
It was something of a surprise move with his former loan club Celtic and Everton
seemingly ahead of Rovers in the queue, although the player himself had
dismissed interest from Birmingham City.
Meanwhile, midfielder Darren Ambrose was
allowed to talk to Charlton Athletic.
2008 Players reported back for training
although Geremi, Amdy Faye and new signing Jonas Gutierrez were allowed extra
time off after international games.
Joey Barton was also missing, still being detained at her majesty's pleasure....
Meanwhile, MD Derek Llambias assured fans that
there were no intentions to sell the club:
"By putting a new management structure
in place this year, by investing in new signings at first team and academy
level, and by introducing cheaper tickets for our younger fans, the long-term
commitment and vision for Newcastle United is there for all to see."
2009 Meanwhile, press reports speculated that a rerun of the club's
"player power" episode of the 1970s beckoned as a discontented squad
continued pre-season training at Carton House near Dublin.
Captain Nicky Butt said:
"We’ve got to get a manager on board – we don’t even know who to
speak to any more.
"Alan Shearer is the favourite with a lot of the people trying to buy the
club – at least that’s what we hear – but until something happens we
don’t know who is in charge.
"The players are completely fed up and when that happens some will try to
go somewhere more stable.
"It’s so frustrating – a (takeover) deal is always happening in
a week’s time but this has been going on since last season. It’s like a
scratched record going over and over. It’s getting on everyone’s nerves.”
2011 United boss Alan Pardew appointed Fabricio Coloccini as club captain
in succession to the previous season's armband wearers, Alan Smith and Kevin
Nolan.
Colo was preferred to Joey Barton, seen as the natural candidate by many but in
the final year of his contract and not always "on message" enough for
his employers....
2015 24 hours after his sister leaked the news on social media, it was
confirmed that Sammy Ameobi had signed a two year contract extension with
Newcastle and agreed a season-long loan move to Championship side Cardiff City.
2015 United U18s began pre-season with a 2-3 defeat by Corby Town at
Little Benton.
Home scorers were Mackenzie Heaney and Jamie Holmes, while trialists Dani Koks,
Callum Douglas and Brandon Williams featured.
2016 Moussa Sissoko and France made it to the final
of Euro 2016, beating Germany 2-0 in Marseille. The Newcastle midfielder won his
43rd senior cap and completed 90 minutes.
2021 England progressed to the final of the Euros thanks to a 2-1
win over Denmark at Wembley.
Future Magpie Kieran Trippier appeared from the bench in extra time while
current Newcastle coach Graeme Jones was pitchside as part of Gareth
Southgate's England backroom staff.
2023 Media speculation credited United with interest in left winger
Harvey Barnes, an expected departure from Leicester City following demotion to
the Championship.
2024 Newcastle's interest in the Copa America ended with Brazil's exit to Uruguay at the
quarter-final stage.
90 minutes failed to produce a goal in Las
Vegas, with Bruno Guimaraes in the starting line-up but withdrawn in the 87th
minute.
With no extra time, the tie went straight to penalties and
Uruguay triumphed 4-2.
