2025/26:
Two games, two moves

Wednesday saw the Premier League adhere to their own timetable for once, publishing live TV alterations for the second and third weekends of the season.

Both Newcastle games move as follows:

Mon 25.08.2025 Liverpool (h) 8pm Sky
Sat 30.08.2025 Leeds United (a) 5.30pm Sky

The PL had also listed today (Wednesday) as the earliest time that September TV changes would be communicated, but nothing appeared. The scheduling of those games will be affected by when European club fixtures are played - something that won't be known until late August.

Update:
Longstaff
bid rejected

The Times reported on Wednesday that the anticipated transfer of Sean Longstaff to Leeds United was off, after they refused to increase their latest £12m bid.

The Premier League newcomers had seen two previous offers for the 27 year-old rejected and are now said to be assessing other transfer options. It's unclear what price Newcastle are willing to accept.

Longstaff is now into the final 12 months of his contract, having made 214 league and cup appearances since 2018, scoring 16 times.

25 Premier League outings last season included just eight starts, the last of which came at Brentford in December.

2025/26:

2025/26:
Austrian return

Following a successful visit back in July 2022, Eddie Howe and his squad will return to Austria later this month for a pre-season training camp.

Their destination for a five day stay is the Tyrol village of Seefeld, previously used by Manchester City and Liverpool and currently hosting Turks Istanbul Basaksehir.

Confirming Newcastle's visit, Austrian-based websites make no mention of them playing any matches during their visit.

This will be the third time that United have included Austria in their schedule, Sam Allardyce leading a training camp in 2007 at Stegersbach (no matches) and Howe overseeing a stint at Saalfelden three years ago (two matches).

United have announced six public friendlies, with a training ground kickabout predicted before heading to Austria:

Wed 30.07.2025 Team K League (South Korea) (a)

Update:
Trent end for Elanga

Having reached agreement with Nottingham Forest to sign winger Anthony Elanga for a claimed £52m, the 23 year-old flew into Newcastle from Portugal on Tuesday.

Swedish international Elanga is set to sign a five year contract and join pre-season training at Darsley Park after completing the formalities of his medical.

What is described as a significant sell-on fee will become due to Elanga's previous club, Manchester United.

The Mail state that delays in completing the deal had arisen from a recent change of representation by Elanga.

Latest:
Wilson: 49 and out

Statement from Callum Wilson, Monday:

To all Magpies

It's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon.

Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.

All good things come to an end but there's no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my family's hearts.

Thank you for the memories.
CW9

Wilson leaves with 49 goals to his name for the Magpies - 47 of which came in the Premier League, a total bettered only by Alexander Isak and Alan Shearer.

He made 130 appearances in all competitions, including 81 starts, United playing a total of 229 matches during his five years as a Magpie.

Talk of a pay-as-you-play deal to remain at Gallowgate following the expiration of his contract mercifully came to nothing, leaving the 33 year-old to leave with his head held high - and his reputation undiluted.

Update:
Teen trio: one in

Sky Sports report that Newcastle have completed a move for Alfie Hutchinson from Rangers, the first of three signings set to boost the club's Academy squad.

The 16 year-old right-sided attacker was spotted on Tyneside earlier in the week and official confirmation of his arrival is now expected in the coming days.

Also tipped for a switch from Ibrox to Gallowgate is fellow 16 year-old Scottish youth international
Oliver Goodbrand, whose favoured position is at left full back.

Updates are also awaited on United's proposed acquisition of Isaac Moran, following news that the England youth international had rejected a contract offer from current club Liverpool. The central midfielder is also 16.

The latest addition to the range of Toon-themed bucket hats by Football Bobbles is this Lee model, inspired by United's distinctive 1997/98 change kit and with a nod to next season's third shirt.

These are available to purchase
here now and there's a special offer for NUFC.com readers of a half-price Kelly bucket hat with orders of the Lee bucket only.

To take advantage of that, add a Lee bucket hat to the online shopping basket and use promo code NUFC.com - that will prompt a Kelly hat to add at checkout.

We had a Lee bucket hat up for grabs, asking you to identify the ex-Magpie who was a Wembley scorer for his previous club, an England U21 midfielder, a scoring debutant for Newcastle in 1997 and subsequently loaned to Sheffield United.

It was of course Des Hamilton, which most folks knew - although Tartan pair Paul Dalglish and Stephen Glass both inexplicably cropped up among those suggested.

The winning entry came from Ann Richardson

On This Day in History
9th July

Born Or Died:

1951 Mick Martin born, Dublin, Ireland. (1978-83)

Midfielder who played for Home Farm and Bohemians in his native city and had made his full international debut before a £25K move to Old Trafford in 1973.

Going on loan to West Bromwich Albion in 1975, a permanent deal followed to keep Mick at the Hawthorns, although he had spent time on loan at Preston North End when the Magpies made their move.

Bill McGarry spent £100K bringing him to SJP in November 1978 and he debuted at Crystal Palace the following month - finding the net for the first time in a home win over Charlton the following March.

Affectionately known as "Zico", Mick came through a sticky patch and was a favourite of the Gallowgate crowd - a fine goal at home to Bolton cementing that reputation.

And a measure of Martin's importance to the side could be measured by the drop in form that followed his injury in December 1979.

Having captained United, Mick eventually bowed out at the end of the 1982/83 season. Later moves took him to Wolves, Vancouver Whitecaps, local side Willington, Cardiff City, Peterborough and Rotherham.

End his playing career with a second stint at Preston, Mick coached at Deepdale before returning to SJP in 1987 as a scout.

Within months however, he was part of the coaching staff, serving as reserve team manager and first team coach during 1988 when Colin Suggett became caretaker boss.

After a period coaching at Celtic with Liam Brady, Mick ended his active football career - although he was involved with sports and betting shop ventures on Tyneside.

Running a workwear clothing business in the area and working as a local radio pundit covering United, more recently Mick has represented the FAI in the North East.

1997 Death of Ivor Allchurch, 67.
(1958-62)

1986 Sebastien Bassong born, Paris, France. (2008-09)

Newcastle fans attending the pre-season kickabout at Doncaster in August 2008 saw the unheralded appearance of this central defender on trial from French side Metz.

With no mention in the programme or on the stadium PA of who was clad in the number 46 shirt, the episode was reminiscent of a pre-season game at Birmingham City in 1997.

That day the unknown Magpie was Dutch winger Brian Pinas - promptly christened "Whatsie" by Toon fans - and similar chants were audible at the Keepmoat Stadium.

While Pinas quickly faded from view though and never played competitively for the first team, Bassong impressed and signed permanently within days.

A competitive Magpies debut for the French U21 international came in the Carling Cup at Coventry City, closely followed by a Premier League bow off the bench in a 0-3 defeat at Arsenal.

A second red card of the season in the vital home game against Fulham (the first coming at Wigan on Boxing Day) meant that Seb was suspended for the final game of the season, at Aston Villa.

Bassong always looked likely to be one of the squad who departed following United's relegation and although he appeared in a pre-season game against Leeds, his eyes were obviously elsewhere.

The player was fined two week's wages after refusing to travel to a pre-season fixture at Dundee United and an £8m move to White Hart Lane was agreed:

An epic 2009/10 season for Spurs then saw Bassong score the winner against Liverpool on his debut, finish on the losing side in an FA Cup Semi Final at Wembley and help his new club qualify for the Champions League.

Having accepted a call-up by Cameroon within days of joining Spurs (qualifying by virtue of his parents' nationality), Bassong started games against both Japan and Denmark at the World Cup Finals.

However, he was unable to prevent them from exiting in the first round and a difficult season with Spurs saw him frequently named as an unused substitute.

Reported to be seeking a transfer in the summer of 2011, the player said, "I feel that I have gone backwards, like I have gone from heaven to hell." Sympathy was in noticeably short supply around NE1....

Loaned to Premier League strugglers Wolves during January 2012, Bassong was unable to prevent their relegation and he returned to White Hart Lane.

Joining Norwich City in a £5.5m deal that summer, Bassong was voted player of the year in his first season at Carrow Road, despite posing for photographs with a firearm and publishing them online.

Adding another relegation to his CV, a loan to fellow Championship side Watford came in October 2014 before returning to Carrow Road and regaining his place, playing in their Wembley playoff final win over Boro.

Playing at the top level again, Bassong endured his fourth demotion when the Canaries were relegated again in 2015/16.

Staying at City for another season, his final appearance for them came in March 2017 and he was released that summer.

Following unsuccessful trials at Birmingham City, Roda JC (Holland) and QPR, Bassong belatedly signed for Peterborough United during October 2018.

However, he made just a solitary appearance for the Posh before leaving in early 2019.

Following a brief spell with Greek side Volos, Bassong returned to the UK and appeared for Isthmian League side Haringey Borough.

1993 DeAndre Yedlin born, Seattle, USA.
(2016-21)

Having lost Daryl Janmaat to Watford during August 2016, United acted quickly by paying Spurs £5m for their 23 year-old right back.

The US international arrived at White Hart Lane from Seattle Sounders in 2014 but played just once - a cameo substitute outing against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Loaned to the mackems in the 2015/16 season, Yedlin had made 25 appearances  - including both derby matches.

His Magpies debut came late on in a home win over Brighton and he arrived from the bench a week later to grab a vital second goal in a victory at Derby County.

However, injury halted his progress during early March, a thigh injury sidelining him following crucial wins at Brighton and Huddersfield but he returned in mid-April to help his side to the Championship title.

He made 34 appearances - three from the bench - in the 2017/18 season, helping United secure Premier League status and also reach a half century of international caps.

Yedlin then appeared in all but four of the club's Premier League games in the following campaign, netting his maiden Premier League goal at Manchester City.

The replacement of Rafa Benitez by Steve Bruce saw Javier Manquillo restored to the side in preference to DeAndre; with the arrival of Emil Krafth signalling further competition for the right back position.

Entering the final year of his deal at SJP, DeAndre went public about a lack of contract negotiations and was restricted to League Cup appearances for several months.

What proved to be his final senior game came in the 0-1 defeat at Sheffield United in January 2021, amid claims that an expired work permit precluded him from any further involvement.

With a reshaped Magpies side by then regularly deploying Jacob Murphy at right wing back, Yedlin secured his release from United and signed for Galatasaray.

He left the Turks in January 2022 and joined MLS side Inter Miami on a four-year deal.

Yedlin left Miami and moved to FC Cincinnati in March 2024.

1994 Nathan Evans born, Middlesbrough
(2007-11)

Academy forward who made four substitute appearances for the U18s without finding the net in the 2010/11 campaign. Nathan was released by United in summer 2011.

Efforts at finding a new club took him as far afield as Preston North End, Crawley Town, Norwich City, Motherwell and even Romanian side Dinamo Bucharest.

Featuring more as a wide midfielder, stints at non-league Whitby Town, Norton & Stockon Ancients
, Guisborough Town and Billingham Town then followed, before a major development during March 2014.

One of 5,700 entrants in the Samsung Win A Pro Contract talent contest, Evans made it through to the last 22 and then scored twice in the final of the event.

League Two Wycombe Wanderers
invited Nathan to train with them and he signed a one year deal at Adams Park.

F
acing Chelsea in pre-season, he didn't make a competitive appearance for the Chairboys and by that October was on loan at Scarborough Athletic.

Returning to Wycombe due to injury, he was released in June 2015 and
later played for Darlington, Corby Town, Team Northumbria, Thornaby and Billingham Synthonia.

What Else?

1986 Queen and Status Quo upset the Gallowgate pigeons when they appeared on a double bill at St. James' Park.

Freddy Mercury & Co. donated the proceeds of that night's concert to Tyneside children's charities.

Queen set list: One Vision, Tie Your Mother Down, In The Lap Of The Gods, Seven Seas Of Rhye, Tear It Up, A Kind Of Magic, Under Pressure, Another One Bites The Dust, Who Wants To Live Forever, I Want To Break Free, Now I'm Here, Love Of My Life, Is This The World We Created? You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care), Hello Mary Lou, Tutti Frutti, Bohemian Rhapsody, Hammer To Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Radio Ga Ga, We Will Rock You, Friends Will Be Friends, We Are The Champions, God Save The Queen.

2002 In a remarkable U-turn, Newcastle's Olivier Bernard signed a new three year contract at SJP, after previously declaring that he didn't want to play for us again.

2006 4-1 up after the first leg, Norwegian side Lillestrøm wrapped up their Intertoto Second Round tie in Iceland against IBK Keflavik with two early goals.

However, their unassailable 6-1 aggregate advantage at the interval was eroded after the break as the Icelandics hit back.

Final score in the Keflavíkurvöllur Stadium was 2-2, giving the visitors a 6-3 aggregate victory and setting up a Third Round meeting with Newcastle United.
