Update:
Wyn Davies RIP
We're desperately sorry to
report that former Newcastle centre forward Wyn Davies has died at
the age of 83.
The man known as the "Mighty
Wyn" is forever associated with United's Fairs Cup adventures,
helping secure trophy success in 1969 and scoring ten goals across the
club's three seasons of participation.
Wyn's early playing career came as a part-timer with the Deiniiolen and
Llanberis clubs, while working as a slate miner.
Joining Caernarfon Town, Davies then signed for Wrexham in 1960. A £20,000
move to Bolton Wanderers followed two years later and the first of 34 full
Welsh caps came in 1964 - against England at Wembley Stadium.
Having proved a dangerous opponent in games against the Trotters, Joe Harvey
convinced Davies to join Newcastle in October 1966, his £80,000 fee an NUFC
club record.
(It later transpired that United had failed to complete a deal 12 months
earlier when wage demands couldn't be met).
Making his bow in a 0-3 home derby defeat that month, it took Wyn five games
to get off the mark, doing so in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at
Gallowgate.
And the following January saw him plunder his only treble in our colours, in
an FA Cup tie against Coventry City at Highfield Road.
The following season saw Wyn improve his scoring prowess as United rose from
a perilous 20th place finish to 10th - and ended up with a Fairs Cup place.
His aerial prowess saw 1968's Manfred Mann cover of Bob Dylan's "Mighty
Quinn" re-worded by the Leazes End into "Mighty Wyn."
The 1970/71 season was Wyn's last as a Magpie: netting against Inter
Milan both home and away but scoring just twice in the league as injuries
took their toll.
Amid interest from Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday, the 29 year-old
joined Manchester City that summer for £60,000.
Just a year later though he was sold on to Manchester United, having
previously turned down a move to Old Trafford in order to join Newcastle.
Later spells with Blackpool, Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra followed
before a knee problem curtailed Wyn's career.
His time on Tyneside between 1966 and 1971 brought 53 goals in 216
appearances. Internationally, he scored six time for Wales and won 34 caps
in a decade from 1963.
Playing his final games for Bangor City in 1979, Davies later famously
became a baker for Warburtons in Bolton and remained in the North West
following his retirement.
2018 saw a plaque unveiled outside his childhood home in Caernarfon, Wyn
commenting that day: “Newcastle was the best club I played for. Humble
people and fanatical."
Update:
Celtic (a) extra train
Rail operator Avanti
West Coast have announced an additional service from Glasgow
Central to Carlisle after Saturday's game at Celtic, departing at
7.30pm, calling at Lockerbie and arriving into Carlisle at 8.43pm.
That connects with Northern Rail services via Hexham to Newcastle departing
at 9.07pm and 10.04pm.
This new 7.30pm service doesn't appear to have been loaded on to any rail
booking website as yet, but should appear in due course.
Update:
Striker search resumes
Having dropped out of the running for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo
Ekitike - at least in public - Newcastle have found themselves credited with
interest in two further forwards.
Brentford's DR Congo international Yoane Wissa was linked to both the
Magpies and Spurs earlier this summer and is under contract until 2026 with
a further 12 month option. Spurs are now managed by his ex-boss Thomas
Frank.
Turning 29 this September, Wissa has 45 Premier League goals to his name
since arriving from Lorient in 2021. That total includes 19 last season and
he's netted against United in our last two visits to West London.
He's set to be absent for at least six Premier League games in December and
January, assuming that he's selected to play for DR Congo at the African Cup
of Nations Finals.
Elsewhere, the name of Benjamin Sesko has also cropped up again
following reports that United scouts had watched the RB Leipzig forward back
in March.
Now 22, the Slovenian international was linked with a host of Premier League
clubs in 2024 but chose to extend his current deal until 2029. He's rated at
over £70m.
Sesko has scored 27 goals in 70 Bundesliga appearances over the last two
seasons since arriving from RB Salzburg.
Update:
Isak,
Ekitike etc.
Latest: The Mail reported on Thursday that
Newcastle had ended their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. It
remains to be seen whether Liverpool follow up their alleged interest in the
striker with a firm bid.
Earlier: after another day of media claims regarding Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike,
it appears that:
Newcastle made a club record bid for Ekitike that Eintracht Frankfurt
rejected. It's claimed that a second bid has gone in, the size and current
status of that isn't known.
Liverpool are said to have contacted Frankfurt over the same player, but
it's unclear whether they have actually placed a bid or the contact was with
his agent only.
Liverpool are said to have contacted Newcastle over Isak, but don't appear
to have actually placed what would be a Premier League record bid. It
appears that following contact with Liverpool, Isak's agent met with Eddie
Howe earlier this month. It's disputed whether Isak himself favours
remaining at Gallowgate or moving to Anfield.
There have been no updates on whether discussions over an extension to
Isak's current deal that expires in 2028 began, are ongoing or have ended
without a resolution.
2025/26:
Austria again
Update: Eddie Howe quotes,
Thursday:
"Quite a difficult summer with
everything that was going on behind the scenes. Obviously losing Paul (Mitchell)
and all of the dynamics changing.
The Sporting Director is such a
pivotal role at the club so there was a lot to pick up. There's been a lot
of work transfer wise for very little incoming action although we're
delighted to get Anthony Elanga in of course, who has done really well in
the first couple of days training.
"We're delighted to get him in but
a lot more work behind the scenes for preparation for the new season (is
needed)."
The Magpies squad continue their Austrian training camp in the Tyrol village of Seefeld - their
third such trip after visiting Stegersbach in 2007 and Saalfelden
in 2022.
The Seefeld Tourist Board website that initially publicised United's visit
confirms that there will be no public training sessions or matches.
Among those joining up with the squad were Dan Burn,
Martin Dubravka, Emil Krafth Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Sandro
Tonali. It's unclear when Tino Livramento will join up with the squad,
having ended his season with England U21s on June 28th.
Aside from the main senior team group, Harrison Ashby, Mark Gillespie,
Travis Hernes, Alex Murphy, John Ruddy, Leo Shahar, Max Thompson and Joe
White all travelled.
Sean Neave, Ben Parkinson and Trevan Sanusi were all involved against
Carlisle United last Saturday but we're yet to spot them in footage or
photos from Austria.
Sean Longstaff travelled to Seefeld but is set to return after terms of his
move to Leeds United were agreed.
2025/26:
Celtic (a)
Saturday sees
Newcastle play their first public advertised pre-season game, facing
reigning the SPL champions at Celtic Park for the Adidas Cup.
It's a 3pm kick-off and the Magpies have sold their full allocation
of 10,000 places. The club's online ticket transfer option won't operate for
this game.
Given the size of the away support, both the usual away corner and sections
of home seating will be occupied by Toon followers.
All away supporters must enter the away
section via London Road. On entry from London Road you will be directed to
the correct location based on your turnstile number, which are detailed
below:
Turnstiles 48–61 via Lisbon Lions Car
Park on Dalriada St.
Turnstiles 62–65 via the right hand side of Kinloch St.
Turnstiles 66–67 via the left hand side of Kinloch St.
Newcastle United Box Office
staff will be at South East Reception, next to Turnstiles 62 - 65, from 1pm.
A significant number of home season ticket
holders are boycotting this game in protest at Celtic's decision to charge
them to attend, having previously included one friendly game in their
renewals.
United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same
situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - compared to the 60,000
present for the 1999 game. This time round a 40,000 turnout has been
predicted.
(Live streaming details for this and the remainder of the pre-season
fixtures is in the next news piece below).
A match programme will be on sale, priced at £4.
Team: Lewis
Hall isn't expected to feature, as he continues his recovery from foot
surgery back in March.
The Magpies are set to debut their new blue third kit.
CFC: To follow
Following a trio of low-key kickabouts (two wins and one loss), Brendan
Rodgers will see his side in home action for the first time in pre-season.
Ahead of our visit, they beat Sporting Lisbon 2-0 in the Algarve on Wednesday.

Update:
Lobby for Leeds
After submitting
an improved bid totaling £15m, Leeds United reached agreement with
Newcastle on Tuesday evening for the transfer of midfielder Sean Longstaff.
The 27 year-old has left the Magpies' training camp in Austria to undergo
his medical with the Elland Road side, having previously reached agreement
on personal terms.
Depending on how quickly the deal is concluded, he could make his Leeds
debut against Manchester United in Stockholm this Saturday.
Longstaff was into the final 12 months of his contract at Gallowgate, having made 214
league and cup appearances since 2018, scoring 16 times.
25 Premier League outings last season included just eight starts, the last
of which came at Brentford in December.

Update:
At last, Elanga
The elongated acquisition
by Newcastle United of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga was
finally confirmed by both clubs on Friday night.
The 23 year-old Swedish international had flown into Tyneside on Tuesday for
his medical before signing a long-term contract of undisclosed duration for
a claimed £55m fee (£52m plus £3m add-ons).
Elanga is yet to be issued with a squad number and joins fellow countrymen
Alexander Isak and Emil Krafth in Eddie Howe's squad.
His signing marks the end of a protracted chase by United, with a failed bid
first reported a year ago, firm interest during the January 2024 window and
a player who was on the radar of club staff as far
back as September 2018.
That came when scoring for Manchester United U18s against their Magpie
counterparts - Elanga then repeating the feat on Tyneside six months later; both goals coming before his
17th birthday.
Fast forward to August 2019 and the winger came off the bench for the
closing stages of a 4-0 U21 away win at SJP for his side.
Back in the region with Manchester United U18s a month later, the Swede netted twice in as many
minutes for the Red Devils at Little Benton - prompting us to describe him
at that time as "unplayable".
Handed a Premier League debut in a 1-2 defeat to Leicester City at Old
Trafford in May 2021, the first of Anthony's 14 goals in that competition
came a week later at Wolves.
A senior international bow arrived during March 2022, replacing Isak late on
against the Czechs in Stockholm - Elanga's first Sweden goal following
against Norway three months later, again after coming on for Isak.
The 2023/24 season began with Anthony making a £15m switch to Nottingham
Forest, starting in their 3-1 win at Gallowgate on Boxing Day and teeing up
the first two goals of Chris Wood's hat-trick.
Firing an equaliser past Martin Dubravka as Newcastle won 3-2 in the return at the City
Ground, Elanga played no part in last season's Carabao Cup
penalty shootout at the same venue but did chip in with an assist as United
won the PL meeting 3-1 there last November.
Most recently, Elanga left Tyneside empty-handed despite playing a part in
two of his side's three goals during a 4-3 PL success for the Magpies back
in February.
He ended the season with six goals and another 11 assists for Nuno Espirito
Santo's side, also playing 45 minutes of an FA Cup semi-final loss to
Manchester City at Wembley.
Swapping a place in the Europa League with Forest for a Champions League
spot with Newcastle, Elanga does have experience in both competitions from
his Manchester United days - netting at Atletico Madrid in the Champions
League.

Magpies learn National League Cup
opposition
Groups for this season's 32
team National League Cup have been announced, with Newcastle
U21s paired with three of last season's four opponents, namely Boston
United, Gateshead and FC Halifax Town.
The only new group stage opponents will be Scunthorpe United
rather than Tamworth, with Group D completed by the U21s of Leeds
United, Boro and the mackems.
As was the case last season, the U21 sides each play all four
National League clubs away from home but don't meet each other, with
the top two teams in each of the four groups advancing to the
knockout stages.
Fixtures:
G1: w/c Mon 11.08.2025 Gateshead (a)
G2: w/c Mon 15.09.2025 Halifax Town (a)
G3: w/c Mon 20.10.2025 Boston Utd (a)
G4: w/c Mon 24.11.2025 Scunthorpe Utd (a)
Six National League sides turned down a place in this season's
competition; Altrincham, Carlisle United, Eastleigh, Hartlepool United,
Yeovil
Town and York City.
The Magpies exited at the knockout stage last season on penalties at
Altrincham.
Update:
Coach arrival
Monday saw the Magpies announce that a newly-created
Head of Football Strategy position would be filled from within the club by
the appointment of Jack Ross.
It's a third permanent role in as many years for the
49 year-old native of Falkirk, who arrived as Head of Coach Development at
the academy in 2023 before switching to Head of Strategic Technical Football
Partnerships.
The former defender began his managerial career a decade ago at Alloa
Athletic, later taking charge of St Mirren, the mackems, Hibernian and
Dundee United.
PS: NUFC confirmed on Friday that they had added Martin Mark to the Gallowgate backroom
staff, arriving as a specialist set-piece coach.
The 31 year-old was previously with FC Midtjylland in his native Denmark,
helping them to Superliga title success.
2025/26:

Born Or Died:
1937 Alan Hopper born, Newcastle.
(1959-60)
Full back who appeared at reserve level for United but failed to make it
through to the first team before leaving SJP.
Signing for South Shields before switching to Barnsley in 1961, Alan made over 130 appearances during four years
at Oakwell.
After a brief stint with Bradford City in the 1965/66 season, he hung up
his boots.
In later years he was a regular player at Rothbury Golf Club.
1959 Victor Nogueira born, Maputo, Mozambique. (1978)
 Newcastle
took this goalkeeper on trial from South African side Rangers in July 1978 as
cover for first-choice Kevin Carr; with Mick Mahoney on the transfer list and
Steve Hardwick on loan to a club in the USA.
Featuring in the club's pre-season tour of Sweden, Victor then took a back seat
after Manager Bill McGarry recalled Mahoney for the remainder of the friendly
matches.
An unused substitute in a kickabout at Arbroath, Nogueira then left Tyneside
and subsequently found his way to the USA.
He'd then enjoy a lengthy career playing both indoor and outdoor variants of
the game for Atlanta Chiefs, Montreal Manic, Chicago Sting, Cleveland Force,
San Diego Sockers and Milwaukee Wave.
Playing for a total of 25 years until his 45th birthday, Victor subsequently
coached various clubs including Concordia Eagles University at Irvine,
California.

What Else?

1998 United took
18 year-old Argentinean midfielder Luciano Filomeno on
trial from Nueva Chicago club in his homeland.

The Buenos-Aires born
player had made a scoring debut for Nueva's first team the
age of just 15 and was capped by his country at youth
international level.
Filomeno appeared in pre-season reserve fixtures at
Whitley Bay (where he scored), Scarborough and Spennymoor,
but wasn't offered a contract at United.
That then began a global tour of clubs that included
Udinese (Italy), Inter Milan (Italy),
San Lorenzo (Argentina) Jaguares de Chiapas (Mexico),
Busan (South Korea), DC United (USA) and then back to
Nueva Chicago.
Later moves saw Lucio join Greek sides Asteras Tripolis
and PAOK Salonika.

2000 Rumours were rife that
defender Steve Howey could leave United after eleven
years of service, with Aston Villa, Liverpool and the
mackems all credited with an interest. He would ultimately
join Manchester City.
2000 Midfielder Rob Lee was
reunited with his no.7 shirt when the
squad numbers were announced. He had initially been given
no.37 by caretaker boss Steve Clarke, after Ruud Gullit
handed his old shirt to Kieron Dyer -
infamously giving Lee no number at all.
Lee's subsequent autobiography was titled "Come
in number 37".
2001
Newcastle Reserves began their season with a 4-1 friendly
win at Ashington.
Colin McMenamin scored twice and James Coppinger also put
a penalty wide, but went on to score United's
fourth - Richard Offiong getting the other on
his stiffs' debut.
Bobby Robson was present at
Portland Park and would have noted an impressive
performance from left back Olivier Bernard.

Tuesday evening at Victoria

deserved victory.
New signings Joey Barton and David Rozehnal both
featured, while Michael Owen returned from injury
with his first Newcastle goal since December 2005 -

2009
In a summer of turmoil and uncertainty, an official club
statement delivered a rare but welcome piece of good news:
"Reports
in the press this morning that Joe Kinnear is to be
appointed as Newcastle United manager are not true.
"The position remains that the Club is still in the
market to be sold and is still negotiating with
prospective buyers."

After a goalless first period, Newcastle made eleven
half time changes and within two minutes went ahead when
Leon Best hit his first Toon goal since moving
from Coventry six months before.
Haris Vuckic got in on the scoring act
shortly afterwards, beating ex-Mag Tony Caig with
a low left footer after good work from Best.
James Perch debuted at centre half following his arrival
from Nottingham Forest, while Chris Hughton blooded
rookies Jeff Henderson and Shane Ferguson at senior team
level.
The Magpies were clad in their third-choice white strip
for the first time, as Puma began their stint as official
kit providers.

2014 United belatedly confirmed the arrival of
Feyenoord right back Daryl Janmaat for an estimated £5m,
as Arsenal welcomed new signing Mathieu Debuchy for a fee
reported to be between £10m and £12m.
The Dutch defender became Newcastle's sixth close season
capture, 24 hours after striker Emmanuel Riviere was
unveiled.
2014
Newcastle fans John Alder and Liam Sweeney
and 296 other innocent people were murdered on a flight from Amsterdam to
Kuala Lumpur.
John and Liam were on their way out to watch United play
in New Zealand when their flight was downed by a
land-to-air missile fired from an area of Eastern
Ukraine.
2017
The U23s began pre-season with a 2-1 win at non-league Darlington AFC.
All the goals came in the opening half hour - Sean Longstaff and Ivan Toney netting,
Toney then missing a penalty and trialist Scott Fenwick
scoring for the Quakers.
The game was staged at Darlington's former Northern Echo
Arena home rather than their new Blackwell Meadows ground.

negotiations to secure Steve Bruce were concluding.
There were first senior outings
