Hoops run rings
round Magpies
Celtic 4 Newcastle 0
Newcastle's public
pre-season got off to a sticky start at Celtic Park, as the reigning SPL champions
put four past United to claim the Adidas Cup.
There wasn't much to shout about for the 10,000 visiting fans as the hosts
took full advantage of their more advanced preparations and a howler from
Nick Pope.
United were already trailing to a 28th minute penalty conceded by Joe
Willock and converted by Arne Engels, when a long ball forward by Kasper
Schmeichel was completely missed by Pope and slotted into the empty net by
Johnny Kenny just before half-time.
Howe made nine changes at the break and Joe White went close before Celtic
broke forward and Yang Hyun-Jun converted past Martin Dubravka which
prompted no fewer than ten changes by Brendan Rogers.
The fourth came in the 75th minute when Liam Scales headed home a cross from
Kieran Tierney and thankfully that concluded the scoring.
Sean Neave came closest for the Magpies in the 91st minute but his close
range header was saved by Viljami Sinisalo.
Schmeichel had denied William Osula in the first half when he tipped over a
deflected shot from the Danish forward.
A miserable afternoon then for Howe and - who was offered the Celtic job
before joining Newcastle - ahead of the trip to the far east to play Arsenal
and Tottenham Hotspur.
The Magpies looked ragged and disjointed although the two Anthonys - Gordon
and Elanga - provided some rare moments of promise in the second half.
Joelinton attended but wasn't involved while Alexander Isak wasn't present.
The club said of the pair that their pre-season minutes on the pitch were
being managed.
Full match report to follow.

Subs n/u: Clarke, Doohan, Montgomery, Osmand, Summers, Ure.
Booked: Trusty.
Goals: Engels (pen), Kenny, Yang Hyun-Jun, Scales.
Following a trio of low-key kickabouts (two wins and one loss), Brendan
Rodgers saw his side in home action for the first time in pre-season.
Ahead of our visit, they beat Sporting Lisbon 2-0 in the Algarve on Wednesday.
Crowd:
TBC. The Magpies sold
their full allocation of 10,000 places housed in both the usual away corner
and sections of home seating.
A significant number of home season ticket
holders boycotted the game in protest at Celtic's decision to charge
them to attend, having previously included one friendly game in their
renewals.
United's last visit to the east end of Glasgow in 2004 saw the same
situation unfold, resulting in a crowd of 20,000 - compared to the 60,000
present for the 1999 game.
After the game Eddie Howe said:
On whether Isak will travel to Asia next week:
"Yeah, absolutely. He's part of our squad. At this moment in time, I
expect him to come."
On Isak rumours:
"I don't think it's easy for any player to be under that scrutiny and
that's part - ten per cent - of the reason why he wasn't here today. I just
want him to focus on himself and his training and being ready for next week.
"For any player that's not an easy thing to deal with and not an easy thing
to understand when you're fielding calls and messages from players and
people asking you all sorts, because the media now is so strong and the
media message goes far and wide.
"I'd never give a guarantee about anybody (staying) because I've
been in football long enough to know I could end up looking silly. But, the
desire from everybody to keep him is as strong as it could be. Fingers
crossed that will happen for us.
"We love him as a player and a person and want him to stay - and that is
right through the club. He's an outstanding talent and a player we cherish."
On transfers:
"It's been a really frustrating summer. We've been very close to signing
several players and for different reasons - there's not one theme why we
haven't signed more - we've ended up missing out on a few who would have
made a difference.
"The one most important factor in any transfer is the player has to want to
come to Newcastle. We're a very proud club and are proud of what we do...
any player has to feel that. If they don't... I don't think it's a healthy
transfer.
"I'd say I'm hopeful rather than confident because we're not in control of
the market or agents, players and other clubs. I can assure everybody we are
a hundred per cent on it and trying to do things quickly."
Referee:
Nick Walsh.

Away the lad
Sean Longstaff was unveiled as a Leeds United
player on Friday, having completed his switch to Elland Road after an
improved bid totaling £15m was accepted.
The 27 year-old left the Magpies' training camp in Austria to undergo
his medical having previously reached agreement
on personal terms. He's signed a four year contract.
Sean was into the final 12 months of his contract at SJP, having made 214
league and cup appearances since 2018, scoring 16 times.
25 Premier League outings last season included just eight starts, the last
of which came at Brentford in December.
He leaves with the good wishes of most fans of the club
he's supported since childhood; given an opportunity by Rafa Benitez after
loan spells at Kilmarnock and Blackpool, surviving the Steve Bruce era and
making a tangible contribution to the club's resurgence under Eddie Howe.
Longstaff is part of an exclusive group to have scored in the Premier
League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League for the
Magpies.
A semi-final brace against Southampton sent United to Wembley in the 2023
Carabao Cup Final and his penalty shootout conversion at Forest set his side
on the road to cup glory in the same competition last season.
Sean's golden moment though will remain the strike at the Gallowgate End
against PSG in the Champions League - a memorable episode during what will
remain one of the greatest ever nights in the history of the club.
There's sometimes a doubt over what sort of reception a former player will
receive when he returns. Not so with him - and he'll deserve every last
cheer. One of our own.

Renumbering
NUFC confirm that recent signing Anthony Elanga
has taken squad number 20, worn by Lewis Hall for the last two seasons.
Hall meanwhile moves on to number 3, vacant since Paul Dummett left
the club in 2024.
Making the announcement, the club reminded supporters that all squad numbers
for the new season remain subject to change. The departure of Callum Wilson
left number 9 available and prompted speculation that Alexander Isak could
switch to that from his current number of 14.

Update:
Wyn Davies RIP
We're desperately sorry to
report that former Newcastle centre forward Wyn Davies died on
Wednesday at
the age of 83.
The man known as the "Mighty
Wyn" is forever associated with United's Fairs Cup adventures,
helping secure trophy success in 1969 and scoring ten goals across the
club's three seasons of participation.
Wyn's early playing career came as a part-timer with the Deiniiolen and
Llanberis clubs, while working as a slate miner.
Joining Caernarfon Town, Davies then signed for Wrexham in 1960. A £20,000
move to Bolton Wanderers followed two years later and the first of 34 full
Welsh caps came in 1964 - against England at Wembley Stadium.
Having proved a dangerous opponent in games against the Trotters, Joe Harvey
convinced Davies to join Newcastle in October 1966, his £80,000 fee an NUFC
club record.
(It later transpired that United had failed to complete a deal 12 months
earlier when wage demands couldn't be met).
Making his bow in a 0-3 home derby defeat that month, it took Wyn five games
to get off the mark, doing so in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at
Gallowgate.
And the following January saw him plunder his only treble in our colours, in
an FA Cup tie against Coventry City at Highfield Road.
The following season saw Wyn improve his scoring prowess as United rose from
a perilous 20th place finish to 10th - and ended up with a Fairs Cup place.
His aerial prowess saw 1968's Manfred Mann cover of Bob Dylan's "Mighty
Quinn" re-worded by the Leazes End into "Mighty Wyn."
The 1970/71 season was Wyn's last as a Magpie: netting against Inter
Milan both home and away but scoring just twice in the league as injuries
took their toll.
Amid interest from Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday, the 29 year-old
joined Manchester City that summer for £60,000.
Just a year later though he was sold on to Manchester United, having
previously turned down a move to Old Trafford in order to join Newcastle.
Later spells with Blackpool, Stockport County and Crewe Alexandra followed
before a knee problem curtailed Wyn's career.
His time on Tyneside between 1966 and 1971 brought 53 goals in 216
appearances. Internationally, he scored six time for Wales and won 34 caps
in a decade from 1963.
Playing his final games for Bangor City in 1979, Davies later famously
became a baker for Warburtons in Bolton and remained in the North West
following his retirement.
2018 saw a plaque unveiled outside his childhood home in Caernarfon, Wyn
commenting that day; "Newcastle was the best club I played for. Humble
people and fanatical."
Update:
Striker search resumes
Having dropped out of the running for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo
Ekitike - at least in public - Newcastle have found themselves credited with
interest in two further forwards.
Brentford's DR Congo international Yoane Wissa was linked to both the
Magpies and Spurs earlier this summer and is under contract until 2026 with
a further 12 month option. Spurs are now managed by his ex-boss Thomas
Frank.
Turning 29 this September, Wissa has 45 Premier League goals to his name
since arriving from Lorient in 2021. That total includes 19 last season and
he's netted against United in our last two visits to West London.
He's set to be absent for at least six Premier League games in December and
January, assuming that he's selected to play for DR Congo at the African Cup
of Nations Finals.
Elsewhere, the name of Benjamin Sesko has also cropped up again
following reports that United scouts had watched the RB Leipzig forward back
in March.
Now 22, the Slovenian international was linked with a host of Premier League
clubs in 2024 but chose to extend his current deal until 2029. He's rated at
over £70m.
Sesko has scored 27 goals in 70 Bundesliga appearances over the last two
seasons since arriving from RB Salzburg.
Update:
Isak,
Ekitike etc.
Latest: The Mail reported on Thursday that
Newcastle had ended their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. It
remains to be seen whether Liverpool follow up their alleged interest in the
striker with a firm bid.
Earlier: after another day of media claims regarding Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike,
it appears that:
Newcastle made a club record bid for Ekitike that Eintracht Frankfurt
rejected. It's claimed that a second bid has gone in, the size and current
status of that isn't known.
Liverpool are said to have contacted Frankfurt over the same player, but
it's unclear whether they have actually placed a bid or the contact was with
his agent only.
Liverpool are said to have contacted Newcastle over Isak, but don't appear
to have actually placed what would be a Premier League record bid. It
appears that following contact with Liverpool, Isak's agent met with Eddie
Howe earlier this month. It's disputed whether Isak himself favours
remaining at Gallowgate or moving to Anfield.
There have been no updates on whether discussions over an extension to
Isak's current deal that expires in 2028 began, are ongoing or have ended
without a resolution.

Unlikely
lads:
Movement
Tracking transfers involving
ex-Magpie reserves, the fate of this midfield quartet are worth a
mention:
Beginning with
Lucas De Bolle, whose decision to quit South Shields midway through
last season and move to Portugal has paid dividends.
The 22 year-old joined Portimonense and after impressing for their U23 side
has agreed a three year deal with the second-tier side based in the Algarve
city of Portimao. Appropriately, they play in black and white shirts.
One of De Bolle's former South Shields colleagues has also found a new club,
Mackenzie Heaney signing for fellow National League North outfit
Spennymoor Town.
Into the National League meanwhile and following his exit from Gateshead
after an injury-hit 2024/25 season, Greg Olley has put pen to paper
with rivals York City.
Finally, the nomadic career of Kyle Scott has brought him back to
his native England after a spell in the USA.
Now 27, Scott has left USL side Orange County in order to sign for League
Two Crawley Town.
2025/26:
Magpies learn National League Cup
opposition
Groups for this season's 32
team National League Cup have been announced, with Newcastle
U21s paired with three of last season's four opponents, namely Boston
United, Gateshead and FC Halifax Town.
The only new group stage opponents will be Scunthorpe United
rather than Tamworth, with Group D completed by the U21s of Leeds
United, Boro and the mackems.
As was the case last season, the U21 sides each play all four
National League clubs away from home but don't meet each other, with
the top two teams in each of the four groups advancing to the
knockout stages.
Fixtures:
G1: w/c Mon 11.08.2025 Gateshead (a)
G2: w/c Mon 15.09.2025 Halifax Town (a)
G3: w/c Mon 20.10.2025 Boston Utd (a)
G4: w/c Mon 24.11.2025 Scunthorpe Utd (a)
Six National League sides turned down a place in this season's
competition; Altrincham, Carlisle United, Eastleigh, Hartlepool United,
Yeovil
Town and York City.
The Magpies exited at the knockout stage last season on penalties at
Altrincham.
Update:
Coach arrival
Monday saw the Magpies announce that a newly-created
Head of Football Strategy position would be filled from within the club by
the appointment of Jack Ross.
It's a third permanent role in as many years for the
49 year-old native of Falkirk, who arrived as Head of Coach Development at
the academy in 2023 before switching to Head of Strategic Technical Football
Partnerships.
The former defender began his managerial career a decade ago at Alloa
Athletic, later taking charge of St Mirren, the mackems, Hibernian and
Dundee United.
PS: NUFC confirmed on Friday that they had added Martin Mark to the Gallowgate backroom
staff, arriving as a specialist set-piece coach.
The 31 year-old was previously with FC Midtjylland in his native Denmark,
helping them to Superliga title success.

Born Or Died:
1962
Paul Bracewell born, Heswall, Cheshire.
(1992-95)

Midfielder whose career was hampered
by a number of long-term injuries, but who gave
the Magpies good service in both Division One
and the Premier League.
Beginning his professional career at Stoke
City, a brief spell at the mackems was followed
by a move to Everton in 1984.
Two league Championship medals came Paul's
way
in six seasons at Goodison, along with three
England caps.
A return to wearside in 1989 saw him make a fourth FA Cup Final appearance, but
like the three for Everton, he lost.
Eyebrows were raised when he moved to SJP in
the summer of 1992 for a tribuna l-set £250K
fee. However a screamer on his debut against Southend
United at the Leazes End soon silenced the
doubters.
Helping the club to promotion, Bracewell
played 32 times in United's
maiden Premier League campaign, finding the
net with another decent effort, this time
against Aston Villa at home.
However his availability became limited by
groin and ankle problems and his first
outing in the 1994/95 season didn't come
until shortly before Christmas.
The appointment of his former Toffees team
mate Peytar Reid as mackem boss in March
1995 saw Brace become a red & white for
the third time that summer in a £50K move.
He then ended his playing career at Fulham
recruited by Kevin Keegan along with Toon
old boys Peter Beardsley & Philippe
Albert.
However, a first foray into management in
succession to KK at Craven Cottage lasted
less than a year, with a later stint in
charge of Halifax Town also ending
prematurely.
Paul then became Technical Director for Complete Football,
overseeing their facility at Gosforth
Park in 2007. By 2013 though, he'd
severed connections with them and later
joined the mackem coaching staff.
Following the resignation of manager Dick
Advocaat in October 2015, Bracewell was
made interim boss of the red and whites.
Promoted to Assistant Manager by incoming
boss Sam Allardyce in October 2015, Paul
survived to work with David Moyes but
departed once again in June 2017.
Bracewell
subsequently worked as a
freelance youth coach and scout, with Spurs among his
clients before working at their academy. He
left in April 2025.

1978
Death of Harry Wake, 77.
(1919-23)
2000
Lewis Gibson
born, Durham.
(2016-17)
 The
younger brother of fellow Magpie full back Liam, Lewis debuted for the U18s at
Blackburn Rovers in January 2016.
Capped by England U17s later that year, some impressive displays
in the European Championship finals prompted rumours of interest from
Manchester City, Spurs and Southampton in the central
defender.
The Liverpool Echo claimed on his 17th birthday that a £6m bid from
Everton had been accepted and the transfer was soon
announced - although the fee involved
remained undisclosed.
An U23 regular at Goodison, Lewis was
called up by England U18s but missed much of
the 2018/19 season due to injury.
A first team debut for the Toffees arrived during pre-season before
a loan spell at
League One side Fleetwood Town in 2020.
September of that year saw Gibson farmed out to Championship
side Reading but they narrowly missed out on a play-off
place.
Next came a loan to Sheffield Wednesday in August 2021, although injury
restricted him to just five appearances.
Lewis joined Bristol Rovers on loan for the 2022/23 season, scoring his first senior goal against
former club Fleetwood Town.
A contract extension was offered by Everton but he left and
signed for Plymouth Argyle in July 2023.
He left Home Park in January 2025 and joined Preston
North End for a reported £1.5m fee.

2000 Croatian
carthorse Silvio Maric shifted his lazy Balkan backside from Tyneside amid scenes of
great celebration.
Having forked out £3.65m for him in early 1999, to rake
back £2m from Porto ranked as a decent bit of business -
especially when they allowed Maric to return to Zagreb
within a year, after failing to make anything of him.
2001
A strong reserve side won 5-2 at Berwick with Lomana
LuaLua netting twice before the interval - only for
Rangers to equalise within minutes on each occasion.
Half-time substitute Richard Offiong then gave United the
lead again, with further efforts from Colin McMenamin and
young Portuguese winger Pedro Dimas wrapping up the
victory in front of a 1,000 strong crowd.
The quote of the night came from Shielfield's PA announcer
at kick-off:
"The man in the middle is Tom Brown, the man in the fur is Bradley
Bear, and the man starting his first night behind bars is Jeffrey
Archer."

Reserve coach Tommy Craig supplied the usual
"good workout" line after his side
won 2-0 at Berwick Rangers.
Both
Caldwell brothers featured, with Gary playing
in a Newcastle shirt for the first time since a
season-long loan with Coventry (and a previous six
month stint at Hibernian).

Clarence @ Shielfield Clarence Acuna
was also in the United side, following his omission from
the first team squad that were en route to Malaysia.

match report 2004
After a summer of speculation that Patrick Kluivert
was coming to SJP, it was finally confirmed that the Dutch
striker was expected
on Tyneside for his medical.
Meanwhile, Gary Speed's Newcastle
career looked to be over, with Fulham and Bolton
poised to offer the
midfielder a contract.
2006 Having been postponed from the
original afternoon start on what was the hottest July day in 95 years,
United's U18s continued their pre-season with a 3-1 friendly
success against Carlisle U18s.
2007 The long-running Charles N'Zogbia saga ended with FIFA
ordering Newcastle to
pay Le Havre compensation.The ir
Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled that Newcastle could
keep Zog, but the player would pay his former club
€650K (£440K) and Newcastle would
contribute €300K (£200K).

Leading the way with a hat trick was a slimline Damien

2011 Yohan Cabaye became the third player
(after Joey Barton and Nile Ranger)
to be denied an entry visa
to the USA for Newcastle's pre-season
tour.
Rather than a criminal record though, his transgression
was a disputed and unpaid dental bill from a
previous Stateside trip.
2012 United reserves began pre-season behind closed doors at Darsley Park, beating
Hamilton Academical 3-1.
The opening two goals came from trialist Anthony Koura, a 19 year-old
forward from French League Two
side Le Mans.
Marcus Maddison then converted a spot kick before Accie's Ali Crawford reduced the
arrears.
2019 The Final of the African Nations Cup took
place in the Egyptian city of Cairo, with Algeria
defeating Senegal 1-0.
Newcastle's Henri Saviet was in the Senegal starting
XI beaten by an Algeria side featuring ex-Magpie loanee Islam Slimani
as an 89th minute substitute.
2019 West Bromwich Albion confirmed that Salomon
Rondon had joined Chinese Super League side Dalian
Yifang.
The fee was officially undisclosed, but widely
claimed to be a £16.5m release fee from the final 12
months of his deal.
The 29-year old Venezuelan striker had spent the
previous season on loan at Newcastle, but they made no
attempt to retain him on a permanent basis.
Rondon was reunited in China with his former Magpies
boss Rafa Benitez, installed as Dalian boss
two weeks earlier.
2019 Speculation intensified that United were
about to pay a club record fee for Hoffenheim's
Brazilian forward Joelinton.
2021
A statement about the proposed sale of the club to PIF
was issued:
"The parties attended a
hearing today in the case between Newcastle United and the Premier League.
"The main hearing of the arbitration has
regrettably now been adjourned until early 2022 due to issues with the
disclosure of evidence.
"The parties will be making no further
comment at this time."
2024 Quotes from Eddie Howe seemed to indicate
issues behind the scenes at SJP, even without throwing the England job into
the mix.
“I absolutely want to stay but it has
to be right for me and the football club. There’s
absolutely no point in me saying I’m happy staying at Newcastle if the
dynamic isn’t right. I’m certainly not serving Newcastle well if I do
that.
“So, as long as I am happy, feel
supported, feel free to work in the way that I want to work, I have not
thought of anything else other than Newcastle.
“I absolutely love the club. I love
the supporters. I love where I am at in my career. There is no better place
for me to be. That is how I feel.”
